• Windows 8 BIOS - Boot Ubuntu from External HDD

  My laptop came pre-loaded with Windows 8 64-bit (only storage device is a 128 GB SSD). Since it is my school laptop/I've heard creating a Linux partition alongside Windows 8 is not very wise I installed Ubuntu onto my external hard drive. I have a 500GB external HDD with the following partitions: Main Partition - NFTS - ~400 GB Extension Partition / - ext2 - ~25gb /home - ext2 - ~30gb swap - ext2 - 10gb /boot - ? - 10gb ? = not sure of partition Using the PenDriveLinux installer, I created a LiveUSB version of Ubuntu 12.04 (LTS) on a 4GB USB drive. Using that, I installed Ubuntu onto the external hard-drive, without any errors (or at least none that I was notified of). Using the BIOS settings, I changed the OS-loading order so that it is in this order: My External USB HDD Windows Boot Loader Some other things Therefore, Ubuntu should load from my hard drive first, but it doesn't. Also, my hard drive is in working condition, and it turns on when BIOS starts (there is a light indicator). When I start my laptop, it goes directly to Windows 8 (I have the fast startup setting disabled as well). So, is there any way for me to set it up so that when my HDD is connected, it will automatically load Ubuntu? Thanks in advance!

  J-ISIS, which is the newly developed Java version of the UNESCO generalized information storage and retrieval system for bibliographic information, continues to be under heavy development and code refactoring in its open source repository. Read more about J-ISIS and its NetBeans Platform basis here. Currently, it looks as follows, though note that the menu bar is under development and many menus you see there will be replaced or removed soon: About one aspect of the application, the browser, which you can see above, Jean-Claude Dauphin, its project lead, wrote me the following: The DJ-Native Swing JWebBrowser has been a nice solution for getting a Java Web Browser for most popular platforms. But the Java integration has always produced from time to time some strange behavior (like losing the focus on the other components after clicking on the Browser window, overlapping of windows, etc.), most probably because of mixing heavyweight and lightweight components and also because of our incompetency in solving the issues. Thus, recently we changed for the JavaFX 2.2 WebWiew. The integration with Java is fine and we have got rid of all the DJ-Native Swing problems. However, we have lost some features which were given for free with the native browsers such as downloading resources in different formats and opening them in the right application. This is a pretty cool step forward, i.e., the JavaFX integration. It also confirms for me something I've heard other people saying too: the JavaFX WebView component is a perfect low threshold entry point for Swing developers feeling their way into the world of JavaFX.

• Apache DVB http video Streaming bandwidth or priority problem

  I'm streaming few precompressed DVB videos from cloud. The streams are generated from VLC on "impossible" ports (such as 64085, 64086 etc) reverse proxed by Apache on port 80 and 8080. All the generated streams are listed in "http://95.110.164.61/indexv.html". From an ADSL connection with enough downlink bandwidth, recalling the stream generated by VLC (such as "http://95.110.164.61:64087/mpg2_6.4") it flows fluently. Recalling the same stream proxed by Apache ("http://95.110.164.61/mpg2_6.4") the stream stops and goes. The only situation in which the Apache proxed streams flow regularly is from a site connected through 64 Mbps warranted bandwith with RTT to the server less than 10 mseconds. Please note that streams below 2 Mbps are fluently proxed. The system is a single core xeon with windows 2008 R2 on 4 GB of RAM with 1 Gbps of network bandwidth. The drain of computational and bandwidth resources is negligeable, the RAM usage always lower than 50%. On the system I run many VLC streamers. Any of them drains a variable amount of RAM (from about 25 to 70 MB). On the contrary the couple of httpd.exe processes drain no more than 7 MB. Using Wireshark (on the server) I see that VLC directy send to the client much more packets than Apache, and the stream is framgmented on many frames. I'm not a programmer, a newby of Apache. Can anyone please address me to a specific portion of the Apache's huge documentation? Thank you. igino

This should be a great learning experience--plus it's a chance to meet up with some of the top Solaris security people, including Glenn Faden and Darren Moffat. • Creating, using and managing XML component dictionaries quick tutorials

  XML Component Dictionary capabilities are provided in conjunction with the CAM Editor toolset.  These dictionaries accelerate the development of consistent XML information exchanges using standard sets of dictionary components. The quick tutorials are aimed at showing the 'how to' of the basic capabilities to jump start use of XML dictionaries with the CAM Editor. The collection of dictionary tutorials videos run for a total of approximately 20 minutes.  Each video can be reviewed individually also. Learn how to use the dictionary functions to create dictionaries by harvesting data model components from existing XSD schema, SQL database table schema, or simple Excel / Open Office spreadsheets with tables of components listed.Also included are tips and functions relating to use of NIEM exchange development, IEPD and EIEM techniques.These videos should be viewed in conjunction with reviewing the overall concepts and techniques described in the companion video on the CAM Editor and Dictionaries overview.  The approach is aligned with OASIS and Core Components Technical Specification (CCTS) standards specifications for XML components and dictionaries.Dictionary collections can be stored locally on the file system, or local network, or collaboratively on the web or cloud deployment, or can be shared and managed securely using the Oracle Enterprise Repository (OER) tool. Also included are techniques relating to the use of the NIEM approach for developing XML exchange schema and IEPD packages.  This includes generating reuse scores, wantlist, and cross reference spreadsheets. Included in the latest release of the CAM Editor is the ability to use the analyse dictionary tool to determine duplicate components, conflicting component definitions, missing component descriptions and so on.  This ensures high quality dictionary component specifications.  Using the CAM Editor you can also create MindMap models and UML physical models of your dictionary components sets. • Monitoring Baseline

  Knowing what's happening on your servers is important, that's monitoring. Knowing what happened on your server is establishing a baseline. You need to do both. I really enjoyed this blog post by Ted Krueger (blog|twitter). It's not enough to know what happened in the last hour or yesterday, you need to compare today to last week, especially if you released software this weekend. You need to compare today to 30 days ago in order to begin to establish future projections. How your data has changed over 30 days is a great indicator how it's going to change for the next 30. No, it's not perfect, but predicting the future is not exactly a science, just ask your local weatherman. Red Gate's SQL Monitor can show you the last week, the last 30 days, the last year, or all data you've collected (if you choose to keep a year's worth of data or more, please have PLENTY of storage standing by). You have a lot of choice and control here over how much data you store. Here's the configuration window showing how you can set this up: This is for version 2.3 of SQL Monitor, so if you're running an older version, you might want to update. The key point is, a baseline simply represents a moment in time in your server. The ability to compare now to then is what you're looking for in order to really have a useful baseline as Ted lays out so well in his post.

• Enterprise Manager Extensibility Exchange – Version 1.1 Now Available!

  Since its announcement at Oracle OpenWorld 2012, the Enterprise Manager Extensibility Exchange is becoming the source to access Enterprise Manager entities, including plug-ins, connectors, deployment procedures, assemblies, templates, and more.  Based on feedback, the Exchange has recently been updated so Enterprise Manager administrators can find and access Oracle and partner-built plug-ins and connectors easier. The Exchange enables anyone to contribute an Enterprise Manager entity through the “Contribute” tab, where information about the entity is captured and placed on the Exchange once it is approved.  The Exchange encourages comment through the Enterprise Manager Forum.  An Oracle partner can build a plug-in by accessing the Extensibility Development Kit (EDK) found at the Development Resources tab.  Oracle partners and customers can can also engage a partner that has built its practice specializing in plug-in development and deployment.  One of those partners is Blue Medora, which has effectively used the EDK to build plug-ins to manage non-Oracle targets.  Next week Blue Medora will be a "Guest Blogger" and tell a great story about heterogeneous datacenter management.Partners can also have their plug-ins validated through the Oracle Validated Integration (OVI) program.  NetApp is an example of a partner that recently built an Enterprise Manager plug-in and has validated it through the program.  Check back here in two weeks for their blog post describing the value of an Enterprise Manager "OVI" plug-in as well as discuss specifics the NetApp storage plug-in.  Check out the NetApp Enterprise Manager Validated Integration datasheet in the meantime. • Fiction that includes BASIC programs [closed]

  Back in what must've been the mid-80s, when every microcomputer included BASIC and Choose Your Own Adventure Books were really popular, there were some novels that had BASIC programs listed in the text, for you to type in and further enjoy. For example, as I recall, in one of these books, the adventurers were infiltrating an undersea base (and eventually wiped the bad guy's data storage [I do believe it was a hard drive, even though they were uncommon then]). One of the programs involved a game were you piloted a submarine and had to avoid or shoot sharks. The code was in BASIC; minor changes (such as 'CLS' - 'HOME') had to be made for your specific computer, and it used good old 40-column text-mode to display the action. IIRC, the plot never depended upon the programs. My question is, does anyone else recall these sorts of books? Do you know any titles that I could look for, or of any online? I am toying with the idea of writing a story like this (no, not in BASIC!), and would really like to see how it was done, back in the day.

  Much data is unstructured, such as text documents, images, and videos. This unstructured data is often stored outside the database, separate from its structured data. This separation can cause data management complexities. Or, if the data is associated with structured storage, the file streaming capabilities and performance can be limited. FILESTREAM integrates the SQL Server Database Engine with an NTFS file system by storing varbinary(max) binary large object (BLOB) data as files on the file system. Transact-SQL statements can insert, update, query, search, and back up FILESTREAM data. Win32 file system interfaces provide streaming access to the data. FILESTREAM uses the NT system cache for caching file data. This helps reduce any effect that FILESTREAM data might have on Database Engine performance. The SQL Server buffer pool is not used; therefore, this memory is available for query processing. FILESTREAM data is not encrypted even when transparent data encryption is enabled. Subscriber may have different attribute : email phone fax .... For each list, their setting is different , so a require_attribute table is introduced. It is a bridge between subscriber and List That store Listid ,subid , attribute, datatype That means the system have a lot of list, each user have their own list, and the list have different attribute, some list have email , phone , some may have phone, address, name mail.. And the datatype is different, some may use 'name' as integer , some may use 'name' as varchar attribute means email phone, it is to define for which list have which subscriber attribute datatype means for each attribute, what is its datatype Table :subscriber : Field :subid , name,email Table :Require Attribute: Field : Listid ,subid , attribute, datatype The attribute here is {name, email} So a simple data is Subscriber: 1 , MYname, Myemail Require Attribute : Listid , 1 , 'email', 'intger' Listid , 1 , 'name', 'varchar' I found that this kind of storage is too complex too handle with, Since the subscriber is share to every body, so if a person want to change the datatype of name, it will also affect the data of the other user. Simple error situation: Subscriber: list1, Subscriber 1 , name1, email1 list2, Subscriber 2 , name2 , email2 Require Attribute : List1 , Subscriber 1 , 'email', 'varchar', List1 , Subscriber 1 , 'name', 'varchar', Listid , Subscriber 2 , 'email', 'varchar', Listid , Subscriber 2, 'name', 'integer', if user B change the data type of name in require attribute from varchar to integer, it cause a problem. becasue list 1 is own by user A , he want the datatype is varchar, but list 2 is won by user B , he want the datatype to be integer So how can i redesign the structure?

  I'm trying to figure out how to do validation of domain objects that need external resources, such as data mappers/dao Firstly here's my code class User { const INVALID_ID = 1; const INVALID_NAME = 2; const INVALID_EMAIL = 4; int getID(); void setID(Int i); string getName(); void setName(String s); string getEmail(); void setEmail(String s); int getErrorsForInsert(); // returns a bitmask for INVALID_* constants int getErrorsForUpdate(); } My worries are about the uniqueness of the email, checking it would require the storage layer. Reading others' code seems that two solutions are equally accepted: both perform the unique validation in data mapper but some set an error state to the DO user.addError(User.INVALID_EMAIL) while others prefer to throw a totally different type of exception that covers only persistence, like: UserStorageException { const INVALID_EMAIL = 1; const INVALID_CITY = 2; } What are the pros and cons of these solutions?

• Problems syncing photos and strange effects of uploaded files from other devices

  I have a Galaxy Spica (GT-i5700) Android v2.1, rooted with Leshak dev 7 #123. But never mind the root info, the problem would be the same unrooted. The photos from this phone is stored in "sdcard/images", nevertheless the phone also creates a "sdcard/DCIM" but only stores some thumbnails there. Problem nr 1: U1 only reads the DCIM-folder for automatic photo-upload. So photos stored in this phone is not uploaded. If I move photos to "DCIM" folder, U1 recognises the photos and start uploading them. Possible solution: Could there be an option in the settings, to set preferred photo folder? Problem nr 2: Out of 74 pictures, 12 did not get uploaded. Pressing "Retry failed transfers" in Settings does nothing. Pressing the files where status is "Upload failed, tap to retry" only changes the status to "Uploading..." but nothing gets uploaded. If I upload another file to U1, it is uploaded directly without any problem. It has nothing to do with file size, 1,1 MB files has been uploaded fine whilst some failed are 0,8 MB. Problem nr 3: The photos from DCIM are in my case uploaded to a folder called "Pictures - GT-I5700" in U1. If I log in to the homepage and from there upload another photo in "Pictures - GT-I5700", it shows up in U1 on my phone fine. But when I tap it, U1 downloads the photo to "sdcard/U1/Pictures - GT-I5700". If it sync photos from "sdcard/DCIM" to a specific folder, why not also download files to the same folder from which it is synced? After a while of usage, syncing and uploading files from different clients it would be a mishmash of folders and places files are stored and considering that I see no use of U1 at all. Another question: If my SD card in some way breaks down/some folders cannot be read/card temporarly changed and U1 is running, does U1 consider that as files deleted and also delete from the cloud?

• Notification framework for object lifecycle

  I am looking for an application, framework, or library that would help us with "object life-cycle management". There are many things that are created for users, departments, and services that, all too often, are left unmanaged. Some examples: user accounts groups SSL certificates access rights databases software license provisionings storage list-serve accounts These objects are created and managed by a wide variety of applications and systems. Typically, a user (person) requests (either explicitly or implicitly) one of these objects. A centralized management tool would help us manage such administration chores as: What objects does user X currently own/manage? Move the ownership of object P to user X; move all objects owned by user X (who was just been fired) to user Y. For all objects of type T that have expired be sure the objects have been disabled or deleted by their provider. How many active (expired, about-to-expire) objects of type P are there? Send periodic notifications to all users who own active objects of type P reminding them of what they own. There is a security alert for objects of type P; send a notification to all users who own these types of objects to take a specific remedial action. Delete or disable a set of objects based on expiration (or some other criteria). These objects are directly managed through their own applications (Active Directory, MySql, file systems, etc.) and may even have their own notification systems, but I want to centralize this into an "object management system". The OMS should allow the association with an external identity provider that defines who the users and groups are (e.g., LDAP, Active Directory) creation of objects association of an object to a specific user and/or group association with an expiration date creation of flexible reporting including letting users know what objects they currently own and their expiration dates integration with an external object "provider" via a plug-in We could write something from scratch, but I am hoping there is something already out there that will help, either an entire application or a set of libraries that provide much of what is needed. Any ideas?

Image available as wallpaper here. By far the most popular method of photo sharing was to upload the pictures to cloud-based storage. Many readers took advantage of sizable SkyDrive accounts. Dragonbite writes: I used to use PicasaWeb (uploaded from Shotwell) until I got the SkyDrive w/25 GB available. My imported pictures are automatically synchronized with SkyDrive and I then send out a link to whomever I want. I have another (desktop) computer where all of the pictures are stored from mine and my wife’s camera’s imports so if I need to free up some space on SkyDrive or my Windows 7 laptop, I double-check they are in the desktop computer before deleting them from my laptop (and thus from SkyDrive as well). • How to store bitmaps in memory?

  I'm working with general purpose image rendering, and high-performance image processing, and so I need to know how to store bitmaps in-memory. (24bpp/32bpp, compressed/raw, etc) I'm not working with 3D graphics or DirectX / OpenGL rendering and so I don't need to use graphics card compatible bitmap formats. My questions: What is the "usual" or "normal" way to store bitmaps in memory? (in C++ engines/projects?) How to store bitmaps for high-performance algorithms, such that read/write times are the fastest? (fixed array? with/without padding? 24-bpp or 32-bpp?) How to store bitmaps for applications handling a lot of bitmap data, to minimize memory usage? (JPEG? or a faster [de]compression algorithm?) Some possible methods: Use a fixed packed 24-bpp or 32-bpp int[] array and simply access pixels using pointer access, all pixels are allocated in one continuous memory chunk (could be 1-10 MB) Use a form of "sparse" data storage so each line of the bitmap is allocated separately, reusing more memory and requiring smaller contiguous memory segments Store bitmaps in its compressed form (PNG, JPG, GIF, etc) and unpack only when its needed, reducing the amount of memory used. Delete the unpacked data if its not used for 10 secs.
