  • Application of LGPL license on a simple algorithm

    The "scope" of the GNU license is troubling me : I know it has been answered many times ( here, here, ... ) but shouldn't we take into consideration the complexity and originality of a code before using GPL license ? I explain : I'm working on a pet project using the DTW algorithm that I have written in C using the pseudo-code given on the wikipedia page . At one point I decided to change it for a C++ implementation ( just for hone my c++ skill ) . After doing so, I've looked for an existing implementation on the web, to compare the "cleanliness" of it, and I found this one : Vectored DTW implementation, which is part of limproved, a C++ library licensed under GPL v3 . Personnally, I don't mind the GNU license because it is a personnal project, which will never led to any kind of commercial purpose, but I wonder if this implementation can abide a company using it to open their code ( and other FOSS permissions ). Theoretically, I think it can ( I may be wrong :p ), but the algorithm in question is so simple (and old) that it should not.

    Alright here is the problem: the creators of a quite popular flash-based game have asked me to port their game to Android. They are not interested in any other platforms so we don't need to be worrying about iOS or PC. They want the best performance on just Android (I guess that's the point of porting a flash-based game. They could have just went with it) They found Unity 'slow'. How would the performance (on android) of other engines compare? Are they expecting too much i.e. finding Unity slow? I am in favor of Unity since development is a little easier with more things being visual (I am not experienced as you might have guessed). How can you identify someone at which level based on his knowledge? I do not tend to compare languages, I do tend to know what indicate a master or a newbie in a language and its (language's) based technology. Yeah, I know there aren't on earth a language stand alone, it always come with a technology with it. Let say in Java, you can memorize all of its keyword and syntax in just few days, but to know it (I mean do something with it effectively), you must read the Oracle (Sun) javadoc many many times (I'm not mention the 3rd party product yet).

    What i am trying to accomplish is have a randomly created number move around the screen but it is touchable. I am planning to have lots of numbers on the screen, so my question is what class is appropriate to use, so I could set a number randomly at run time and display it while it moves around the screen? I was planning the use a TextView, since I want to use a custom font of mine but I think creating a bunch at a time could cause a memory problem and to my understanding they cant move around the screen at runtime.

    There is this pattern that trades performance of array access against the need to iterate it when clearing it. You keep a generation counter with each entry, and also a global generation counter. The "clear" operation increases the generation counter. On each access, you compare local vs. global generation counters; if they differ, the array has been reset. This has come up in StackOverflow recently, but I don't remember if this trick has an official name. Does it? One use case is Dijkstra's algorithm if only a tiny subset of the nodes has to be relaxed, and if this has to be done repeatedly.
