• Next step for Python app using Sqlite db

  I want to write a db program in Python using Sqlite. I have the db table structure planned, and am ready to move to the next step, which I think is to work any bugs out of the db structure. I am totally inexperienced in development except for writing the original db (written in MS Access), and an Intro to C++ class (OOP concepts and console C++ programs). Is it time to test the db structure? If so, what's the best way, and what tool(s) should I use? Thank you.

  I have been trying to get a simple spider to run with scrapy, but keep getting the error: Could not find spider for domain:stackexchange.com when I run the code with the expression scrapy-ctl.py crawl stackexchange.com. • How to prevent traffic to/from a slow Cassandra node using Python

  Intro: I have a Python application using a Cassandra 1.2.4 cluster with a replication factor of 3, all reads and writes are done with a consistency level of 2. To access the cluster I use the CQL library. The Cassandra cluster is running on rackspace's virtual servers. The problem: From time to time one of the nodes can become slower than usual, in this case I want to be able to detect this situation and prevent making requests to the slow node and if possible to stop using it at all (this should theoretically be possible since the RF is 3 and the CL is 2 for every single request). The questions: What's the best way of detecting the slow node from a Python application? Is there a way to stop using one of the Cassandra nodes from Python in this scenario without human intervention? Thanks in advance!

  I'm interested in learning Clojure. The Getting Started page on Clojure.net is pretty minimal. Is there a good language introduction or tutorial out there? Which would you recommend? Answer: I have watched the videos on youtube called Intro to Clojure. I don't recommend those. They are a little too brief and don't give a lot of background. The talks by Clojure creater Rich Hickey. I am finding the "for Java developers" version very useful.

  When i put an NSOpenglView in NSSplitView, a problem occurs while dragging splitter. The openGLView and SplitView are resizing asynchronously. i found a solution in apple mail list thread http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/samplecode/GLChildWindowDemo/Introduction/Intro.html and i found a solution with some carbon calls. but now i get link error (only in release mode). so i'v got two questions - is there any cocoa way to fix the splitter - gl problem? if no - how can i fix carbon linker errors in release mode?

• UISplitViewController: how to get toolbar if details controller is UITableView?

  Hi, I checked out Apple's example on how to exchange detail views in the UISplitViewController (http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#samplecode/MultipleDetailViews/Introduction/Intro.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/DTS40009775) and it seems that they put the UIToolbar in every detail controller. Then, if the device is rotated, they hide the toolbar or show it and add a popover button which will show the root controller. I'd like to adopt this pattern to show my root controller in a popover using a button in the toolbar, but unfortunately, my detail controllers are all UITableViewControllers and they do not allow adding other UI elements than a table view. So how do I deal with that? Is there an example around? René

• emacsclient -eval "(insert \"something\")" is not working for me

  I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 which comes with Emacs 23. I need Jabref to push citations to Emacs. However, despite I installed the Jabref plugin to push citations through emacsclient, it's not working. I did my testing, and read some of the Emacs Lisp Intro. Some commands do work, for instance if I type (in the console): emacsclient --eval "(switch-to-buffer \"*sratch*\")" the emacs windows switches to that buffer. However if I issue an insert command: emacsclient --eval "(insert \"do you see me?\")" no text is inserted in the current buffer. Does Emacs 23 changed something about insert?

• iPhone game audio and background music

  Have a few questions related to adding sounds to my game, specifically intro music (for splash), background music (loop) and button event sounds. Hope you can share your knowledge on this. 1) Should I use compressed sounds or uncompressed sounds? Or perhaps a combination of the two? Are there any limitations on the iPhone hardware that I should be aware of -- for example, the ability to play multiple compressed sounds? 2) What's the best audio format for my purpose? 3) For background music, I am thinking of using AVAudioPlayer. For button event sounds, I am thinking of using AudioServicesPlaySystemSound, what do you think? 4) Any other issues I should be aware of? Thank you!

• Django says the "id may not be NULL" but why is it?

  I'm going crazy today. I just tried to insert a new record and it threw back a "post_blogpost.id may not be NULL" error. Here's my model: class BlogPost(models.Model): title = models.CharField(max_length=100) slug = models.SlugField(max_length=100) who = models.ForeignKey(User, default=1) when = models.DateTimeField() intro = models.TextField(blank=True, null=True) content = models.TextField(blank=True, null=True) counter = models.PositiveIntegerField(default=0) published = models.BooleanField(default=False) css = models.TextField(blank=True, null=True) class Meta: ordering = ('-when', 'id') There are a number of functions beneath the model too but I won't include them in full here. Their names are: content_cache_key, clear_cache, __unicode__, reads, read, processed_content. I'm adding through the admin... And I'm running out of hair.

  I've been quite impressed with dynamic data and how easy and quick it is to get a simple site up and running. I'm planning on using it for a simple internal HR admin site for registering people's skills/degrees/etc. I've been watching the intro videos at www.asp.net/dynamicdata and one thing they never mention is how to handle concurrency control. It seems that DD does not handle it right out of the box (unless there is some setting I haven't seen) as I manually generated a change conflict exception and the app failed without any user friendly message. Anybody know if DD handles it out of the box? Or do you have to somehow build it into the site?

• Is Android AVD's firewall somehow more restricted to real Android firewall?

  I have a TCP server running in AVD and a TCP client running in AVD. AVD client dies because the connection refused so we are doubting some restricted firewall settings. I turned off the firewall in my Debian -laptop with this here but it did not fix the problem so some issue with Android -emulator, intro here. How can I make a TCP connection from one AVD to another AVD in the same laptop in Android? Then "Run as Configuration" and you should see this bug. I don't have a physical Android -phone to test the code so I cannot comment whether it works with real Androids.

• Overlapping two divs and 'clearing' their parent div

  My CSS-fu is letting me down here: What I'd like to do is position two child divs to be overlapping: Using position: absolute; top: 0px; left: 0px; is the only way I know how, with the parent set to position: relative. The problem with this is that the child divs are taken out of the layout as per the CSS spec, shrinking the parent div to height: 0px, so that I can't clear that div and put any content below. My amazing ASCII art below details what I'm going for... any ideas? As an aside, I need these divs to be overlapping exactly for jQuery fades, and maybe trying out some of the new Webkit transforms, a la Apple's cardflip demo: http://developer.apple.com/safari/library/samplecode/CardFlip/Introduction/Intro.html If there's another way to get them overlapped exactly in CSS, I'm all ears.   Hi all, There are these 2 frameworks out there in the same "cloud application" space as GWT: Sproutcore and Cappuccino. Cappuccino is Cocoa for the web, Sproutcore is Cocoa-like and one very central idea in both is Key Value Observation where the framework itself provides the glue to change all dependencies of an object when it changes, and you only have to declare those dependencies. If that was too poorly expressed please see this presentation: http://www.infoq.com/presentations/subelsky-sproutcore-intro Since the pattern reduces the amount of code you type it reduces the number of bugs. Maybe it's too much to ask but I would like to have that and all the benefits of Eclipse/compiler that come with GWT. Is there support for this in GWT, or a library already developed? The code below works fine until I want to create choices, where for some reason I always get this error message: line 22, in unicode return self.question AttributeError: 'Choice' object has no attribute 'question' Unfortunatley, I dont understand where I made an error.   Intro There's a lot of advice out there for dealing with return codes in batch files (using the ERROLEVEL mechanism), e.g. Get error code from within a batch file ERRORLEVEL inside IF Some of the advice is to do if errorlevel 1 goto somethingbad, while others recommend using the %ERRORLEVEL% variable and using ==, EQU, LSS, etc. There seem to be issues within IF statements and such, so then delayedexpansion is encouraged, but it seems to come with quirks of its own. Question What is a foolproof (i.e. robust, so it will work on nearly any system with nearly any return code) way to know if a bad (nonzero) code has been returned? My attempt For basic usage, the following seems to work ok to catch any nonzero return code: if not errorlevel 0 ( echo error level was nonzero )

  I am learning Django and got it to work with wsgi. I'm following the tutorial here: http://docs.djangoproject.com/en/1.1/intro/tutorial01/ My question is: how can I customize the look and feel of Django? Is there a repository of templates that "look good", kind of like there are for Wordpress, that I can start from? I find the tutorial counterintuitive in that it goes immediately toward customizing the admin page of Django, rather than the main pages visible to users of the site. Is there an example of a "typical" Django site, with a decent template, that I can look at and built on/modify? The polls application is again not very representative since it's so specialized. any references on this would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

  Intro I am working on an e-commerce website. And we want to add a feature where a user can refer others via a custom link e.g.: http://mysite.com/a1t2312 or http://mysite.com/?ref=a1t2312 (a1t231 being the referral code). A user following such a link, will navigate a few pages on the site. And if he reached the 'buy' page and purchases something - the original referrer will get a discount. The question is: What is the best method to track the referral code ? Put it in the user's cookies ? Stick it somehow into the session ? Other method ? Thanks

What is each part doing? Functionally, the animation makes visible a series of pictures, then the whole site. I want to skip the animation and just make the whole site visible(if cookies='visited'). I'd like to do this without rewriting the animation script. here's a link. What happens now is if you have the cookie the animation doesn't run and everything is hidden.
