• Warming up an IIS Application Pool automatically?

  So IIS likes to shut down app pools that aren't in use. While this makes sense, I would like to have certain app pools conterminously running, but I don't want to just disable the automatic app pool restart as some of the settings (e.g., maximum memory limit) are good to have. I know that Microsoft announced the IIS Application Warmup module as an IIS 7.5 feature only then to do a Bait & Switch and pull it again so that they can put it in IIS 8 instead, so I wonder if something exists to run on IIS 7.5/Windows 2008 R2?

• Outlook 2010 search stopped working with Exchange 2007

  The quick search feature in Outlook 2010 used to work fine. We switched the computers over from a workgroup so that they are on the domain with our new server. We then copied all the email from the old PST file into the new Exchange based folders. Since we did that 3 of the 4 computers can't search email using Outlook's awesome search boxes. One of them works perfectly fine. Any idea what might have happened? There are only 5 users on the network and it's a pretty burly server for such a small network, I can't imagine the server is still indexing their mail. Is the quick search something that has to be turned on or might it be related to the permissions change from a non-domain user to a standard domain user?

• Rsync like windows backup tool

  I need to backup some windows machines and have been unable to find the proper tool. What I need is a tool that does efficient copying of changed files to a windows network location, like Rsync does. In turn, the server will then back that up using rdiff-backup, a tool which does very clever incremental backups. Right now I'm using windows' 7 included backup feature, but I really don't get that. It's too much off-topic, but it doesn't suffice (seems buggy as well). I looked into Amanda, but as soon as it wanted to install MySQL, I aborted. I also tried Deltacopy, but unfortunately, I don't remember what the problem with that was... Any advice for an rsync like tool that just does daily syncs to a network location?

• Limit number of concurrent user logins in Windows Server 2008 Active Directory

  Is there the possibility to limit Active Directory users' max concurrent login sessions? I've read many articles and discussions about the solution, but none of them seem to be working. Many had suggested UserLogin script that doesn't work in Windows Server 2008. Some other suggested CConnect that is not good enough. It's also very complicated. Some others have introduced UserLock that should be paid for. It's wondering that Windows Server 2003 DOES have the feature (wile as a third-party), but Windows Server 2008 doesn't have! • Issue with Windows Server backup

  I have windows server 2008 r2 installed, Only service running on it is hyper-v. I am trying to take backup using windows server backup feature and it fails with following error in eventlog The backup operation that started at '?2009?-?08?-?22T18:42:14.123000000Z' has failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up failed with following error code '2155348129'. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved. • System Lags/Freezes when under high usgage

  I am not sure if its my GPU / Memory or Hard drive thats failing. For example if I'm runnning more than one instance of chrome and running an application that takes up a lot of resources, my system will start to lag and freeze. When I launch Photoshop the GPU feature disables automatically, this also lags when I click on menus and when working on documents in Photoshop. I really dont know where to start, if i should buy a new graphics card or test the memory or could it be my OS drive? • Cannot set audio input volume (internal microphone) on mac

  On a macbook air (MacOS X 10.6.5), when doing skype calls people are complaining they hear me very low - so I had a look to the system preferences under audio and noticed the input volume was 54%. I am now trying to set the input volume to 100%. To my surprise the volume is gradually set back as I speak. I tried deselecting 'use ambient noise reduction' but it doesn't help.' Is there any way to avoid this volume auto-setting feature? Any help appreciated!

• PHP Requests Being Blocked After Making About 25 in Ten Minutes

  We have an administrative portal where we run PHP functions through a Javascript portal using ajax for administrative purposes. For example, we might have a function called updateAllDatabaseEntries() which would call AJAX functions in rapid succession, with those functions each executing numerous SQL queries. The problem is after making several successive requests from the same computer (not an excessive amount, maybe 30 in ten minutes) the system will stop responding to any PHP, HTTP requests ETC ONLY from my computer. From other computers in the office the panel can still be accessed, and access is restored to this computer after about 15 minutes. We believe this is not a glitch but some kind of security feature built into our server, possibly relating to Suhosin and likely well-intentioned but currently preventing us from running our system administration. • Trying to install PHP 5.2 on IIS/Win 2008 - Error 500

  I have a fresh install of IIS 7 - I just added Web Platform Installer, and PHP 5.2 thru that. However, when trying to access to a simple test.php file (just has phpinfo() in it), I get the following list of errors: • IIS was not able to access the web.config file for the Web site or application. This can occur if the NTFS permissions are set incorrectly. • IIS was not able to process configuration for the Web site or application. • The authenticated user does not have permission to use this DLL. • The request is mapped to a managed handler but the .NET Extensibility Feature is not installed. The domain was created with dot net panel, but I don't think that has to do with this problem, unless maybe it uses a specific user? Maybe I need to add php thruough dot net panel? Any idea of what I'm doing wrong here?

• Split a table in Word without losing row title

  Word has the feature to repeat title row of a table when a table is so long that it spans a bunch of pages. I need to categorize my data into several pages, and I did that by splitting the table and insert page split to put them all in a page of itself. So now I got several page of data, but only the first page has title row. Is there anyway else to do this beside manually adding the title row to all the other pages? • Reset All My Passwords

  I know there are some great apps out there for keeping track of passwords (see how-do-you-keep-track-of-all-your-passwords if you aren't familiar). I'm interested in additional features for managing my passwords, particularly to reset all my passwords. I can imagine that this feature would be pretty complicated to implement, considering: websites have different methods for resetting a password client applications most likely don't have a means to change a password except for through a graphical user interface (as opposed to providing a command line command) So, I'm curious if there is a solution out there and I just haven't found it. If not, perhaps I will have to start another side project.

• Can I disable OS X Lion Autosave and Versions?

  OK I'm going there: I want to turn off a new feature in OS X that's so infuriating I could swear it was designed by Microsoft, namely, Autosave / Versions. I just don't want it. I have a workflow that involves my trigger finger on cmd-S, I use my own VCS when necessary, I save as compulsively and I open applications like TextEdit and Preview as temporary notepads without wanting any changes saved automatically and without a stupid unlock dialog that then records my changes when I only want to see the changes and not record them. So: please tell me how I can turn off Versions without rolling back to 10.6, and you will be my new personal hero. Thanks! PS: Just asking how to disable, not for a discussion of the pros and cons of the features.

• Windows 7: Use VirtualStore as user for own benefit?

  I've researched a bit and came to the understanding that VirtualStore is part of the new UAC feature in Vista/W7 which is the file system part of the transparent data redirection and redirects write access to folders like program files to C:\User\<username>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\ in lack of applications respecting the LUA principles. Now I'm interested if that kind of transparent redirection can also be used as a power to the user. Here's an example which comes to my mind: I install any kind of software to e.g. D:\Whatever\ThisAndThisApp\ and I set up things that, after initial installation, any write access to this folder is transparently redirected to e.g. D:\MyOwnVirtualStore\Whatever\ThisAndThisApp\file_only_writable_here.txt. Is this thinking too far or can I actually use that power of VirtualStore as a user on Windows 7? I'm using the Professional version of that matters.

• Partition table damaged

  Hello, I'm currently in a terrible situation with my hdd: I was trying to install an OS side by side with my windows 7 x64 and I used the Paragon Partition Manager feature made for that. It disabled/hid/(damaged?) one of my partitions and now I can no longer access it. The partition, unfortunately, contains data I need to access urgently and I've got no backup. To complicate things even further I don't have another PC (I'm writing this msg from my iphone) and all I can rely on is a backtrac 4 disk (wkn't connect to my wifi, gets stuck obtaining IP address) and. Windows 7 x64 disk. Booting into windows fails with the pc hanging on the starting windows screen. Safe mode won't work either. Is there anything I can do? Here's the layout of the disk: Recovery partition Win partition Unallocated space (it's supposed to be my data partition) Other os partition (don't care about that, the installation of the other OS failed) Please help me, I'm desperate.

• Jumbo Frames on DIR-655

  I am trying to set up jumbo frames on my gigabit home LAN but no luck so far. My setup is: D-Link DIR-655 router, HW Revision A3, Firmware 1.21 EU Synology DS107+, Firmware 3.0-1337 Laptop w/ Win7 x64, external PCIx NIC managed by "Generic Marvel Yukon 88E8053 based Ethernet Controller" The router is supposed to support jumbo frames but doesn't feature any relevant setting. I set the Jumbo Packet value to 9000 on both the NIC and the Synobox but it doesn't work, ping -f -l 8972 says "Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set". Is there any other setting I overlooked, the DIR-655 doesn't actually support jumbo frames, or what else could be the problem?

• IIS and PHP restrict IO permissions

  I have php installed trough a fastCGI module. Is there a way to restrict the module (php.exe) read / write permissions to only the directory (+ subdirs) of the IIS site that is calling it? I need this to prevent one IIS PHP site from having access to files outside its own directory. How to do this? Is there a setting in php.ini or in the IIS configuration? I believe such a feature could exist, because when a file on the server is requested the root path of the site is also known, all it would take is that IIS passes this path to the php module, and the php module should on its end allow only IO operations within this path. PS: I know it is possible to achieve this by using a different windows account for each website, this is not an option.

  I am getting the following error when attempting to activate the Sharepoint Server Publishing Infrastructure. There are only about 140 columns defined in the entire site collection. I had previously activated and subsequently deactivated this feature. I don't know whether this might be causing the problem. But I really have no idea. I am a developer and this is my first question on serverFault. Please be gentle. Error Message: Column Limit Exceeded. There are too many columns of the specified data type. • Can't Remote into Windows Server

  Hello, I have a Dell server wired into the router. I was able to connect to it with my laptop (laptop is wireless) before my router died. My verizon router went kaput, and I got everything else back up and running on the wireless network other than the remoting in feature, even though I can access the server through windows explorer just fine. Any ideas why? What do I need to check? UPDATE: Interesting scenario, Network Discovery is off; I turn it on and save, but for some reason, even after that, network discovery is turning itself off... no idea why that is happening? Thanks.

• Google Chrome Automatically Save Passwords

  I have seen, and at one point implemented, methods of modifying firefox's password manager popup such that it would automatically save usernames and passwords without prompt. I was wondering if there is a similar feature for Chrome. I just recently switched to chrome and it is one of a few features/modifications that didnt survive the transition, and while I am moderately capable in programming in certain languages (C+, visual etc) I don't really feel confident enough to muck around unguided. For anyone that is particularly interested, the other features I miss are things such as the slash based 'quick search' in firefox... and I am currently annoyed by a different right click menu order for opening in new tabs and new windows (the reverse of firefox). Any help would be greatly appreciated!

• How can I can delete a project in Aperture, but not in Flickr?

  I have a Macbook Air as my only computer ; I store my shots on Flickr. The size of the SSD doesn't allow me to keep all my RAW files on my laptop. So I publish the photographs I like in their final state on Flickr with the built-in feature of Aperture. When I hit delete on a project (in Aperture) the message clearly indicates that all photos synched to any service like Facebook, Flickr or any other will be deleted. How can I can around this without the hacky way of unlinking Aperture from Flickr before deleting the project?

  Does Exchange Server adequately protect against backdating items in a mailbox folder? I want to determine from an auditing perspective what level of risk exists/what trust can be put into Exchange database records. Is there a (mis)feature that allows end point users to modify the sent/recieved date fields on their own messages? Is there a reasonable way short of hand editing the files for an Exchange Server admin to make such a change? And most importantly: Is there any kind of "sequence number" that we could use to audit Exchange records for evidence of date manipulation (ex. msg100 = Dec 15, msg101 = Dec 10, msg102 = Dec 16)

• Blocking facebook's Like button in firefox

  Many sites today use widgets from facebook such as the Like button, list of friends who are fans of that site and so on. While it may be a nice feature, I perceive it to be a serious privacy intrusion, because facebook most likely stores information about which sites you visit. I also heard that when you are not logged into facebook, it still tracks the sites you visit (probably with a cookie) and once you log in attaches the data to your real account. For now, I want to keep using facebook, but I would like to block just these widgets so it can't track me. Is there any Firefox extension which could do that?

  I've internet TV at home, it works via special modem which connects to router via Lan interface. I'd like to move Tv to a room which has no router. so i'd like to use wifi for internet TV. My plan is this, buy another wifi router, set it to repeat sygnal of primary router and attach this TV modem to repeater router via Lan interface. Will this work? The good thing was I could select which content to play; using the click-to-play feature in Firefox and Chrome. But now that HTML5 video is getting popular, I see a lot of ads popping into view again. They are not only a distraction, they hog resources on my computer and make the fans spin full speed. • Tabbed terminal that connects to a GNU Screen session?

  I use the session feature of screen extensively. For example, I'll start a screen session for "project1" as "screen -S project1", and then when I need to reconnect I use "screen -d -r project1". This makes it easy to manage multiple projects, each with their own set of shell sessions. What I would love to do now is that when running on Windows and Linux, to be able to use a tabbed terminal program (such as gnome-terminal) to connect to a screen session and have all of the screen windows split out to separate tabs. This way I get all the usual power of screen, but with the convenience of a richer GUI experience. Is there any such terminal program available on Windows and/or Linux?
