• Does Team Foundation Server supports Checkpoints?

  My dev team used in the past MKS Source Integrity source control and we are not evaluating to migrate to TFS 2010. Some concepts and meaning are a bit different and we need sometime to learn how to do the same things we do before in TFS or how to change our approach. First of all, we used to do Checkpoints for each software release. MKS in this case does a snapshot of all source code files. You can later compare different checkpoints to see the code differences, or extract a whole checkpoint as a build. Does TFS have a similar feature? Do you know where can I read something about it?   If you were to self-fund a software project which tools, frameworks, components would you employ to ensure maximum productivity for the dev team and that the "real" problem is being worked on. What I'm looking for are low friction tools which get the job done with a minimum of fuss. Tools I'd characterize as such are SVN/TortioseSVN, ReSharper, VS itself. I'm looking for frameworks which solve the problems inherient in all software projects like ORM, logging, UI frameworks/components. An example on the UI side would be ASP.NET MVC vs WebForms vs MonoRail.

• Development team collaboration via Google Wave

  I hope I am not repeating any previously asked question. Anyway, so Google Wave is nice and shiny and sounds like a lot of folks(at least at Google I/O :) used it in a useful for work(!) way. I've been beta-testing Google Wave for sometime now, but can't quite grasp how to improve our workflow using it. We have a medium size team of developers that are spread out around US and Europe and naturally most of communication is happening via IM and Skype and email of course. So what are specific things that could be offloaded to Google Wave to improve collaboration by leaps and bounds(meaning not just replacing IM with nicer IM)?

  Hi, I'm trying to display the page title (html title) on the default.aspx page of a custom site template. The template is based on a MOSS team site template. All that displays is the URL of the page as the page title. Can I change the code in the default.aspx and/or the sites master page to define the title myself? • pro*C in oracle XE

  I downloaded the free express edition of oracle, Oracle XE. I couldn't find the pro*c compiler in this edition. I read somewhere that oracle 9i client has pro*C, So I presumed that oracle client for 10g XE should have it too and downloaded it. But to my disappointment, I can't find it there too. :(. Is there a way to download the older oracle 9i and use it connect to 10g XE without any compatibility problems?. Or is it possible to download the pro*C compiler alone?. I don't want to download the standard editions as they are too large(2 GB). Thanks.

  The team explorer for my project looks like this: mytfsserver\mycollection -- Project 1 solution -- Project 2 solution -- Project 3 solution When I right click on one of the solutions and do a "Show Project Portal", I see the following hierarchy: mycollection - WSS site Project 1 site with dashboard (appears to be a MOSS site) Project 2 site with dashboard (appears to be a MOSS site) Project 3 site with dashboard (appears to be a MOSS site) Are the dashboard sites MOSS sites? If I want to create a wiki, do I have to create a subsite with the wiki template under each of the Project sites? Can someone point me to a document/video that talks about the sites that area created by TFS by default?

• Looking for Team Development type Software like SVN

  I am in need of a software that is PHP-Based, or similar that can be installed on my server that doesn't offer SVN Perks. It should be somewhat similar to an SVN, however, since the server doesn't support SVN, we'll need another means of doing sort of the same thing. We have a team of Developers and need to accomplish progress in the same way that an SVN does, but without that type of server support. Is there any software that could be installed via webhosting that would be somewhat, if not exactly, similar to an SVN? Please help, Thanks :) P.S. - This is related to development AFAIK, but not exactly code-related.

• TFS 2008 ignores team project check-in settings

  I'm trying to set up our TFS 2008 instance to require that projects build before they can be checked in. I have created a check-in policy using the out of the box "Builds" policy, but I'm still able to check broken projects in after mangling the code and attempting to build the project. We're a small shop, and TFS was originally set up with our team's Active Directory group listed as TFS admins. Is this the problem? Do check-in policies apply to TFS admins? Any other suggestions?

• Code reviews for larger ASP.NET MVC team using TFS

  I'm trying to find a good code review workflow for my team. Most questions similar to this on SO revolve around using shelved changes for the review, however I'm curious about how this works for people with larger teams. We usually have 2-3 people working a story (UI person, Domain/Repository person, sometimes DB person). I've recommended the shelf idea but we're all concerned about how to manage that with multiple people working the same feature. How could you share a shelf between multiple programmers at that point? We worry it would be clunky and we might easily have unintended consequences moving to this workflow. Of course moving to shelfs for each feature avoids having 10 or so checkins per feature (as developers need to share code) making seeing the diffs at code review time painful. Has anyone else been able to successfully deal with this? Are there any tools out there people have found useful aside from shelfs in TFS (preferably open-source)?

To complete the work fast we have created a macro that has been updated on all the machines. This macro corrects the font, size and formatting. How can I ensure and implement that nobody can change/replace or delete this macro from their system? In case this happens I should get an alert. Known Issues/Limitations Customizing the generated report by changing the template, adding comments, including attachments etc… is not supported While opening a test plan summary document in  Office 2007, if you get the warning: “The file Test Plan Summary cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents” (with Details: ‘The file is corrupt and cannot be opened’), click ‘OK’. Then, click ‘Yes’ to recover the contents of the document. This will then open the document in Office 2007. The same problem is not found in Office 2010. Generated documents are stored by default in the “My documents” folder. The output path of the generated report cannot be modified. Exporting word documents for individual test suites or test cases in a test plan is not supported. JMS Module A JMS module is a definition which contains JMS resources such as queues and topics. A JMS module is required in order to create a JMS queue. Subdeployment JMS modules are targeted to one or more WLS instances or a cluster. Resources within a JMS module, such as queues and topics are also targeted to a JMS server or WLS server instances. A subdeployment is a grouping of targets. It is also known as advanced targeting. Connection Factory A connection factory is a resource that enables JMS clients to create connections to JMS destinations. JMS Queue A JMS queue (as opposed to a JMS topic) is a point-to-point destination type. A message is written to a specific queue or received from a specific queue. The objects used in this example are: Object Name Type JNDI Name TestJMSServer JMS Server TestJMSModule JMS Module TestSubDeployment Subdeployment TestConnectionFactory Connection Factory jms/TestConnectionFactory TestJMSQueue JMS Queue jms/TestJMSQueue 2. Configuration Steps The following steps are done in the WebLogic Server Console, beginning with the left-hand navigation menu. 2.1 Create a JMS Server Services > Messaging > JMS Servers Select New Name: TestJMSServer Persistent Store: (none) Target: soa_server1  (or choose an available server) Finish The JMS server should now be visible in the list with Health OK. 2.2 Create a JMS Module Services > Messaging > JMS Modules Select New Name: TestJMSModule Leave the other options empty Targets: soa_server1  (or choose the same one as the JMS server)Press Next Leave “Would you like to add resources to this JMS system module” unchecked and  press Finish . 2.3 Create a SubDeployment A subdeployment is not necessary for the JMS queue to work, but it allows you to easily target subcomponents of the JMS module to a single target or group of targets. We will use the subdeployment in this example to target the following connection factory and JMS queue to the JMS server we created earlier. Services > Messaging > JMS Modules Select TestJMSModule Select the Subdeployments  tab and New Subdeployment Name: TestSubdeployment Press Next Here you can select the target(s) for the subdeployment. You can choose either Servers (i.e. WebLogic managed servers, such as the soa_server1) or JMS Servers such as the JMS Server created earlier. As the purpose of our subdeployment in this example is to target a specific JMS server, we will choose the JMS Server option. Select the TestJMSServer created earlier Press Finish 2.4  Create a Connection Factory Services > Messaging > JMS Modules Select TestJMSModule  and press New Select Connection Factory  and Next Name: TestConnectionFactory JNDI Name: jms/TestConnectionFactory Leave the other values at default On the Targets page, select the Advanced Targeting  button and select TestSubdeployment Press Finish The connection factory should be listed on the following page with TestSubdeployment and TestJMSServer as the target. 2.5 Create a JMS Queue Services > Messaging > JMS Modules Select TestJMSModule  and press New Select Queue and Next Name: TestJMSQueueJNDI Name: jms/TestJMSQueueTemplate: NonePress Next Subdeployments: TestSubdeployment Finish The TestJMSQueue should be listed on the following page with TestSubdeployment and TestJMSServer. I hope to have more tips, best practices - but here is a quick thing that people seem to trip up on..."How to Run OWSM related WLST commands" The most common issue people seem to run into is trying to run the OWSM WLST commands from the wrong location. You need to run the WLST commands from "oracle_common/common/bin/wlst.sh" (ex: /home/Oracle/Middleware/oracle_common/common/bin/wlst.sh) This is documented in the OWSM doc (Security And Administrator's Guide) under the section "Accessing the Web Services Custom WLST Commands". Note: This location is different from the location from where you run the SOA WLST commands. If you try to run the OWSM WLST command from the wrong location - you will see errors like the following: "The MBean ,@ oracle.wsm:*,name=WSMDocumentManager,type=Repository was not found"

  ADVISOR WEBCAST: “Supporting References” In Release 12 - SLAPRODUCT FAMILY: Receivables, Payables, General Ledger April 18, 2012 at 14:00 UK / 15:00 CET / 06:00 am Pacific / 7:00 am Mountain / 9:00 am Eastern "Supporting References” enables users to enter additional information for the “Journal Entry Header” and “Journal Entry Lines” that can be used for analytical purposes. This functionality was earlier known as “Analytical Criteria”. In 11i, additional data was interfaced to GL on the journals using “Descriptive Flexfields” whereas using this feature in R12, customers can create customized sources as ‘Supporting References’ and pass values into those sources from Subledgers like AP / AR / PA, etc. TOPICS WILL INCLUDE: Supporting References Business information about a subledger journal entry at the header or line level Establishing a subledger balance for a particular source value or combination of source values for a particular account To assist with reconciliation of account balances Financial and managerial analysis A short, live demonstration (only if applicable) and question and answer period will be included.
