• Looking for a good Dynamic Imaging Solution

  I work for a small E-Commerce shop and we are looking for a process that will handle resizing our product images dynamically. Currently our designers take high resolution photos, either provided by the manufactures or created in house, and alter them to fit various pages on our site. The designers are constantly resizing, cropping, altering compression levels, etc., of each product photo to fit the needs of the business. Being that our product line is updated frequently, this becomes a monotonous task. Abobe Scene7 does exactly what we are looking to do and the images are served up from a CDN. Unfortunately we found it to be too expensive. I'm curious to learn how others handle this process at their organizations. Does anyone know of any good 3rd party tools or other SAAS providers that can handle performing some basic image manipulation and serving them on the fly?

  I have code which could be executed using a Provider that doesn't support transactions, or doesn't support nested transactions. How would I programmatically determine such support? E.g. • Put logic behind generated LinqToSql fields

  In a database I use throughout several projects, there is a field that should actually be a boolean but is for reasons nobody can explain to me a field duplicated over two tables where one time it is a char ('Y'/'N') and one time an int (1/0). When I generate a datacontext with LinqToSql the fields off course gets these datatypes. It would be nice if I don't have to drag this stupid choice of datatype throughout the rest of my application. Is there a way to give the generated classes a little bit of logic that just return me return this.equals('Y'); and return this==1; Preferably without having to make an EXTRA field in my partial class. It would be a solution to give the generated field a totally different name that can only be accessed through the partial class and then generate the extra field with the original name with my custom logic in the partial class. I don't know how to alter the accesibility level in my generated class though.. Any suggestions?

  Hi, In Ror or Django or web2py you can "describe" a database (as a set of classes that remaps to tables) and the framework (having being provided with a connection string to the desired database) generates the tables, fields, relations and in the case of RoR and web2py it also keeps it up-to-date (eg, removing a class drops the table, adding a property to the class triggers an "alter table add" etc). Is there any perl module that does the same? Eg, it takes the YAML / XML / JSON description of a database as input and modifies / generates the database accordingly? Thanks in advance.

  Which is the better practice? Add CSS during web designing you can see the result (or close) as early as possible and make required changes. You also know how many divs or spans you might need (eg to make curved cross-browser hover background). But as you add more and more components to the page sometimes things get hack-ish as you need to patch here and there to get the exact design required. Add CSS after finishing page design you can see the page overall structure as it is well, without styles. You get to see how accessible your site is, and modify it right away if it's not good enough (unlike the former case where you may break multiple CSS rules). Plus after you finished it, you only need to spend most of the time to alter only the CSS file, which is good to get the momentum going. Granted I have never tried the latter approach, but am seriously considering it for my next project if I can see convincing reasons -- or if it's no good at all. Thanks.

  What is the best way to handle mysql database users connection in PHP? I have a web server running a PHP application on MySQL. I have created a database user for the application: dbuser1 with limited access - only for query, insert and update tables. No alter table. Now the question is, should i use the same dbuser1 widely in my scripts, so if there are 100 current people using my system and hence 100 scripts running parallel they all connect to the database with the same dbuser1? or should i create a few users and assign each script a different user or load-balance between the dbusers ?

• Making all links inside of a div call the same function?

If the user clicks the X then it will call dismiss() which will mark it as being read in the database. The thing is, if the message itself contains a link to another page or external site, I also want to call dismiss() before the user leaves the page. Is there anyway to alter this javascript to take all a elements (the X and any links that would appear in the message) and change the onclick to call the function?

• Matching First Alphanumeric Character skipping (The |An? )

  I have a list of artists, albums and tracks that I want to sort using the first letter of their respective name. The issue arrives when I want to ignore "The ", "A ", "An " and other various non-alphanumeric characters (Talking to you "Weird Al" Yankovic and [dialog]). Django has a nice start '^(An?|The) +' but I want to ignore those and a few others of my choice. I am doing this in Django, using a MySQL db with utf8_bin collation. EDIT Well my fault for not mentioning this but the database I am accessing is pretty much ready only. It's created and maintained by Amarok and I can't alter it without a whole mess of issues. That being said the artist table has The Chemical Brothers listed as The Chemical Brothers so I think I am stuck here. It probably will be slow but that's not so much of a concern for me as it's a personal project.

RECOVERY is not a recognized SET option. incorrect syntax near _5_log'. i am using visual studio 2010 (also have SQL Server Express installed locally, SQL Server 2008 proper installed at provider (shared)) thnx a lot

• Any good GUI tool to easily create stored procs SQL server 2008 ?

  The templates for stored-procs in SSMS do not auto-populate all input columns, again there is manual work involved. I am looking for something like right-click on table and say CREATE stored-proc, and then it allows to pick a template, based on which it can populate the parameters etc. and give check-box in GUI (like table designer, you can easily add/remove a column). Some support for change management with table undergoing alter or otherwise would also be helpful. Currently we manually write all stored-procs, which i think we should be able to save time and labor with automation. Any suggestion on other free 3rd party tools ?

• Change connection on the fly

  Hello, I have a SQL server with 50 databases. Each one has the exact same schema. I used the awesome Subsonic 2.2 create the DAL based on one of them. I need to loop though a list of database names and connect to each one and perform an update one at a time. If there a way to alter how subsonic uses the connection string. I believe I would need to store the connection string in memory that way it can keep changing. Is this possible? I tried doing a ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["theConnStrName"].ConnectionString = updated-connection-string-here; .. but that did not work thanks!

  I am being asked to alter a system to include the ability to have pay differentials based on hours worked. The old method included a stored procedure (MSSQL2000 db) that did the basics, but simply knows the start and end of every shift. When adding a versioning trigger I however get the error this id generator generates Int64, Int32, Int16 of type IdentifierGenerationException.   Hi ! In Sql Server 2005 I have a column with a "DEFAULT" constraint. I'd like to create a script that drops that column. The problem is that is returns me that error : Msg 5074, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 The object 'DF__PeriodSce__IsClo__4BCC3ABA' is dependent on column 'IsClosed'. Msg 4922, Level 16, State 9, Line 1 ALTER TABLE DROP COLUMN IsClosed failed because one or more objects access this column. I couldn't find an easy way to drop a column and all its associated constraints (only found big scripts that look into system table... there MUST (!!) be a "nice" way to do that !). And as the DEFAULT constraint's name has been randomly generated, I can't drop it by name. Thanks for your help.

• Bulletproof way to DROP and CREATE a database under Continuous Integration.

  I am attempting to drop and recreate a database from my CI setup. But I'm finding it difficult to automate the dropping and creation of the database, which is to be expected given the complexities of the db being in use. Sometimes the process hangs, errors out with "db is currently in use" or just takes too long. I don't care if the db is in use, I want to kill it and create it again. Does some one have a straight shot method to do this? alternatively does anyone have experience dropping all objects in the db instead of dropping the db itself?   I've been reading the cookbook for a while now and still don't get how I'm supposed to do this: My original problem was this: A related Model isn't being validated From RabidFire's commment: If you want to count the number of Category models that a new Post is associated with (on save), then you need to do this in the beforeSave function as I've mentioned. As you've currently set up your models, you don't need to use the multiple rule anywhere. If you really, really want to validate against a list of Category IDs for some reason, then create a join model, and validate category_id with the multiple rule there. Now, I have these models and are now validating.   Is there a simple way to get the default thumbnail from a youtube entry object gdata.youtube.YouTubeVideoEntry? I tried entry.media.thumbnail, but that gives me four thumbnail objects. Can I always trust that there are four? Can I know which is the default thumbnail that would also appears on the youtube search page? And how would I get that one? Or do I have to alter one of the other ones? When I know the video_id I use: http://i4.ytimg.com/vi/{{video_id}}/default.jpg so, it would also be helpful to get the video_id. Do I really have to parse one of the url's to get at the video_id ? It seems strange that they don't provide this information directly.

  Let's suppose I have the following line in a CSV file (I removed the header row in this example): "500,000",2,50,2,90000 I have a PHP script read the CSV file, break the file into individual lines, and store each line in an array called $linearray. Then, I use a foreach loop to look at each line individually. Within the foreach loop, I break the line into separate variables using the following function: $line = str_replace("'","\'",$line); From here, I insert the values into separate columns within a MySQL database. The script works. The values are inserted into a database, but I run into a problem. I want: "500,000" | 2 | 50 | 2 | 90000 But I get this: "500 | 000" | 2 | 50 | 2 | 90000 The script isn't smart enough to understand it should skip commas within quotation marks. Do you know how I can alter my script to make sure I get the output I'm looking for? Thanks.
