• Assigning resources to MS Project 2007

  Hi, I'm planning a redesign of a site in Project 2007. I have three developers to hand, all with the same skills. There are about 80 templates to be rendered as part of the redesign, and each template has been added as a project task. Each of these tasks can be done by any of the 3 devs, and each will take a day (with a few exceptions). There is no order in which the tasks must be completed, so there are no predecessor rules. I'd like to be able to assign tasks to a 'Developer' resource group, and for Project to see that three tasks can be done at once (as the group has three resources members) and queue the tasks as such. Googling leads me to Team Assignment, but that appears to be part of Project Server. Surely I can do this in standalone Project? Thanks, Adam

• Windows: Running an AutoIt script to launch a GUI app - on a server, when no one is logged in

  I want to run an AutoIt script every day at 1:00 AM on a Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition. Since this is a server, obviously there is rarely someone sitting there logged in at the console, so the procedure needs to account for this. The AutoIt script in question launches and sends keypresses to a GUI app, so the process needs to include creating some sort of session for the user running the schedule task. Is there a way to do this? I can't just use scheduled tasks run the AutoIt script when no one is logged in - if I do, it fails to launch at all. I thought that I might be able to create an RDP session and run the scheduled task as that user, inside that session, but I haven't found a way to create an RDP session without launching mstsc.exe -- which is itself a GUI app, and I have the same problem again.

• Can't reconnect to my RDP session

  I use a VM through RDP. When I'm done for the day, I just disconnect the session and reconnect in the morning. That allows me to pick up what I was doing and not close all the applications. As I'm the only user, this generally works well. Today, I can't reconnect to my session from yesterday. When I RDP, I get a new session. When I run query user, I can see my other session: USERNAME SESSIONNAME ID STATE IDLE TIME LOGON TIME me rdp-tcp#82 1 Active 15:00 4/22/2010 9:00 AM me rdp-tcp#91 2 Active . 4/30/2010 9:00 AM If I try to use Terminal Services Manager to remote control the other session, I get this error: Session (ID 1) remote control failed (Error 7044 - The request to control another session remotely was denied. ) Is there any way to reconnect to this session, or do I need to just kill it?

  Our company has grown quite quickly and I am facing new tasks which I did not think I'd need to deal with. Recently we've come ot a point where we have 100+ Devices (Routers, Bridges, Computers, Laptops, VOIP Phones etc). The other day I was quite frightened when I asked for an inventory and no one had one. I want to start tagging all equipment and recording serials to begin tracking our inventory and ensuring we have a proper record of what equipment we have. Does anyone have advice as to how to go about 1. Convincing the higher ups why we need to do this and 2. What software or strategies might work? Keep in mind this is not for furniture, office equipment etc but IT specific equipment. I'm concerned over people 1. Stealing the physical devices and 2. Losing track of configuration data etc in case we'd need to do a wipe and restore

• If fiber runs 1gig fine, are there any concerns when considering upgrading to 10gig transceivers?

  We had fiber installed (connecting ~10 buildings) around 5 years ago and it has been working great. The initial setup involved Procurve 2848 and 2824 switches w/ 1gig transceivers. However, lately we have been considering upgrading our network both to increase bandwidth and possibly add VOIP. However, a lot of this is assuming that we can just use pop the existing fiber into 10gig XFP transceivers in better switches and call it a day. If the fiber works fine at 1G does that mean it should be fine for 10gig? If not, how can we confirm that our existing fiber trunks will work, preferably in an affordable fashion?

• Meinberg ntp for Windows - force more frequent updates?

  I have a Windows VM that has time drift problems, and left to its own devices will drift by minutes per day. I know there are issues with time on VMs, but I was hoping using the Meinberg NTP service would be successful. It works, generally, in that the time gets corrected in one big step about once every 70mins when it's at about 10mins offset. This has totally confused me as I thought NTP was meant to drift gently back towards the right time, and panic and die if the offset was more than 3 minutes. So (a) what is happening and (b) how do I make it update more regularly?

  Consider a small-medium business' deployment of Exchange 2003. The question is around migrating to Exchange 2010. Here's a bit about the landscape: Current state is 50-100 users/mailboxes with the majority using Outlook 2007 OWA enabled desktop users are NOT running in Cached Exchange Mode laptops users ARE running in Cached Exchange Mode a single Exchange server with modest or reasonable specs for the day (3gz, multi-core, 4gb, Win 2003 32-bit) Questions Do you have any suggestions for the admin team regarding the upgrade path/steps from Exchange 2003 to 2010? Considering the requirement of a 64 bit OS, consider a new separate machine as ready to go with Win 2008. Have I missed any details? Where might virtualization help in this project? Any lessons learned in previous upgrades (2007 or 2010) would be appreciated!

• How many users are "many users"?

  I need to find a solution for a website which is struggling under load. The site gets ~500 simultaneous connections during peak time, and counts around 42k hits per day. It's a wordpress based site bridged with a vbulletin forum with a lot of contents and a fairly complex structure which makes intensive use of the database. I already implemented code level full page caching (without this the server just crashes), and configured all other caching directives as well as combining css files and the like to limit http requests as much as possible. I need to understand if there is more that can be done via software or if the load is just too much for the server to handle and it needs to be upgraded, because the server goes down occasionally during peak times. Can't access the server now, but it's a dedicated CentOS machine (I think 4GB ram, can't say what CPU) running apache/mysql. So back to the main question: how can I know when the users are just too many?

• Is there a way I can use $PATH as defined by my bash profile?

  I spend most of my day ssh'd into servers. I have a series of aliases/functions/scripts that allow me to type p hostname from the terminal and execute GNU screen(1) on the remote side, using the following command: exec ssh hostname -t 'screen -RD'` I've only recently noticed that ssh -t does not get my custom $PATH. Here's some terminal output: adam@workstation:~:0$ sh server 'echo $PATH' /home/adam/bin:/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin:/opt/git/bin:/opt/git/libexec/git-core adam@workstation:~:0$ ssh server -t 'echo $PATH' /usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin Connection to uranus.plymouth.edu closed. My biggest problem is my custom aliases only try to execute screen, since I can't guarantee an absolute path, and my $PATH is structured so the shell should find the correct one. If my $PATH settings aren't honored, my scripts don't work. Is there a way I can use $PATH as defined by my .bashrc/.bash_profile? I believe PermitUserEnvironment is disabled.

What is your way to find software? Do you first go to a forum or google? Which torrent site? which P2P program, website or server? For example: "I need a software that have functions as a remote desktop and also lets you copy and paste (drag and drop - file manager). And after few hours searching on Google I downloaded LOGMEIN Pro2, but than I see that is just trial. So if I need to find alternative I will spend another whole day. Where to go?   I know that most people don't bother with things like screen anymore, but I happen to really like it, even in this GUI day and age. I still do most of my development from a BASH prompt, so it's extremely useful to me. What I'm wondering is what the easiest way is to start an instance of screen (stored in a shell script or .screenrc or somewhere else) so that it starts up with set commands already running in set windows. For example, I use a django test server, so I'd like one window to come up running "python manage.py runserver" and another blank, waiting for commands. The man page is wholly indecipherable. These old unix utilities can do quite nearly everything, so I'm sure this is possible, but I can't for the life of me figure out how. I

• Best wireless mouse/keyboard for conference room computer?

  What would be the best wireless mouse and keyboard for a conference room computer that is used by multiple employees throughout the day? We have one in there right now that is really cheap that doesn't work half the time. This is due to the fact that the batteries run down when left on... and it seems to have problems losing its pairing with the computer dongle. Any ideas on something that won't have battery problems, is very reliable and somewhat tough? Price isn't too much of an issue, but I'd still prefer to get something for less than $100 just in case someone walks away with it.

• Excel: ROUND & MOD giving me strange DATE results

  This is sort of related to a previous question. My formula, which seemed to work fine yesterday now gives strange results. Today is the 30th of March (30/03/10). It's 10:11am on the clock that the computer is using for the time stamp in the NOW() part of my worksheet. Below is the formula and a screen shot of the results/columns. QUESTION: Why ddoes it show 1/2 day, and also where does 23 1/2 come from? My config is as follows: service tftp { protocol = udp port = 69 socket_type = dgram wait = yes user = nobody server = /usr/sbin/in.tftpd server_args = -s /svr/tftp disable = no } the directory /svr/tftp permissions are 777: drwxrwxrwx 3 nobody nobody 4096 Nov 14 10:32 svr This thing should have full permissions as would anyone who wanted to write or read from that directory. I see nothing in the logs im really stumped on this. If the file is already in the directory I can read it all day long, I just cant make NEW files, can not put them, but I can do get's, I can only put to an existing file with permissions @777. Thanks

• Server 2008 blue screen after login - no desktop

  I came into work today to find that our Windows Server 2008 used as a terminal server for the Thin Clients was not loading the users desktops. What I have found out is that when I login via Remote Desktop, after applying user settings, it gets to the stage of 'Preaparing your desktop', but then the screen just goes blue. I have tried rebooting several times with no luck, and logging in locally at the server with no luck. Does anyone have any suggestions? I do not think that it could be a virus attack as we run antivirus on the server with OpenDNS filtering. Yesterday a software restriction policy was set up to only allow programs in the following directories to run if that could be the problem, although it was working fine all day yesterday. • Making Google Talk messages appear on all logged in clients.

  We're using Google Talk as our unofficial-official chat client around the office at work. One thing that poses a big problem almost every day is the fact that Google Talk only sends a message to the clients that you last used. Even though you may be logged into GTalk on 3 different machines, if you start talking on one machine, that becomes your "active" machine, and if you go to another machine, you will still only get messages on the last active machine. Is there a way that you can force Google Talk to send messages to ALL logged in clients, regardless of which client you are actively using? That way, you don't miss any messages during the time between when you get up from the active machine and then make the new client "active".

• Mac Screenshot of a Specific Window without Using the Mouse/Click

  Hello, I've been researching for a day or two but can't find a method to take a screenshot of a specific window (possibly the only window) open at a specific time using an Apple script. Currently I have the script execute screencapture -T1 ~/Desktop/screenshot.png But what I want is really screencapture -wx -T1 ~/Desktop/screenshot.png But when I use -wx, it waits for a mouse click on the window. Are there any utilities, built in or not, that will allow me to do this? Thank you so much! (I'm sorry if this belongs on Stack Overflow, can someone move it if it does. • ntpstat response fine but server time out of sync

  Hi, I found out that the ntpd service that I've set up a few weeks ago on a Centos5 machine doesn't correctly synchronize the server time. I detected an offset of more than 5 minutes (by stopping ntpd and executing ntpdate). After setting up the service I checked the setup via ntpstat: [xxxx@xxx ~]$ ntpstat -q synchronised to local net at stratum 11 time correct to within 10 ms polling server every 1024 s I repeated this check every day and it always showed this output. Doesn't this output tell me that the server time is sane?

  I have a file explorer shell extension called "Copy File Path" or "Copy Folder Path", depending on which pane I am in in file explorer, which copies the full path of a file or a folder to the clipboard. Because it's very handy for me, I use it many times during the day. To make it more productive, I would like to assign a function key to it instead of using the right mouse click context menu, looking for it in the menu (big menu because of many extensions) and selecting it. As demands change you're just reallocating logical resources, maybe the 2 computer client now requires a third physical system. You just add it to the cloud, and don't worry about sharding the database, or migrating data over to a new server. Can it work this way? If yes, why would anyone ever do things like partition their database servers anymore? Just add more computing resources. You scale horizontally with the hardware, but your server appears to scale vertically. There's no need to modify your application's infrastructure to support multiple databases etc.

  I am running a Linux server from 2000, I have Fedora12 installed as the OS. I know you can virtualize Windows XP on the system to be able to run Windows programs, but the problem is I My server has only one 1333Mhz Pentium 3 processor and 1G of Ram. granted this is a pretty kick ass computer for the day, but lacking the second processor I'm afraid that I will not be able to run Windows virtualization to support Photoshop CS3. Is there any program out there that runs similar to Photoshop, like windows Digital Image suite 10, that will run smoothly in my Linux Fedora 12 environment? or can I virtualize windows and run the Windows digital image suite 10, without slowing or corrupting my system?

• ubuntu server slowly filling up

  We had our samba server (ubuntu 8.04 ltr) share fill up the other day but when I went to look at it I cant see any of the shares have to much on them we have 5 group shares and then each users has an individual share one users has 22gigs of stuff a few others have 10-20mb of stuff and everyone else is empty so maybe like 26gigs total I deleted a few files yesterday and freed up about 250mb of space today when i checked it it was completely full again and i deleted some older files and freed up about 170mb of stuff but i can watch it slowly creep down in free space.
