• Modifying JSF Component Tree in PhaseListener

  Hi all, I'm having an issue. I've implemented a PhaseListener, which is meant to add a style class to any UIInput components in the tree that have messages attached to them, and removes the style class if it doesn't have any messages attached to them. The PhaseListener runs in the RENDER_RESPONSE phase, and does it's work in both the beforePhase and afterPhase methods while debugging. While debugging, I found that beforePhase doesn't have access to the full component tree, but afterPhase does. Any changes done in afterPhase aren't rendered though. How do I go about this? I want this to be completely server side. Thanks, James

• Ruby Socket Inheritance

  I'm writing a Ruby class that extends TCPSocket. Assume it looks something like this: class FooSocket < TCPSocket def hello puts 'hello' end end I have a TCPServer listening for incoming connections server = TCPServer.new 1234 socket = server.accept When my server finally accepts a connection, it will return a TCPSocket. However, I want a FooSocket so that I can call socket.hello. How can I change TCPSocket into a FooSocket? I could duck-punch the methods and attributes I want directly onto the TCPSocket class, but I'm using it elsewhere and so I don't want to do that. Probably the easiest solution is to write a class that encapsulates a TCPSocket, and just pass the socket returned by accept as a param. However, I'm interested to know how to do it through inheritance—I've been trying to bend my mind around it but can't figure it out. Thanks in advance.

• Dynamically load .asmx web-service

  I have an .aspx page that can perform a number of functions. The type of function is determined at run-time depending on which button the user clicks. This makes makes a web-service call to an .asmx method. The web-service call returns html and javascript which then become part of the original page. This new content has javascript events attached to button clicks, data validation etc. In turn these events then call their own web-service methods in another .asmx file. The main page does not know about these other .asmx files when the page loads. So, is there any way of dynamically loading these .asmx files on demand?

  Hello all, I have one doubt concerning c# method overloading call resolution. Let's suppose I have the following C# code: enum MyEnum { Value1, Value2 } public void test() { method(0); // this calls method(MyEnum) method(1); // this calls method(object) } public void method(object o) { } public void method(MyEnum e) { } Note that I know how to make it work but I would like to know why for one value of int (0) it calls one method and for another (1) it calls another. It sounds awkward since both values have the same type (int) but they are "linked" for different methods. Ps.: This is my first question here, i'm sorry if I made something wrong. =P

• GWT RPC - Does it do enough to protect against CSRF ?

  GWT's RPC mechanism does the following things on every HTTP Request - Sets two custom request headers - X-GWT-Permutation and X-GWT-Module-Base Sets the content-type as text/x-gwt-rpc; charset=utf-8 The HTTP request is always a POST, and on server side GET methods throw an exception (method not supported). Also, if these headers are not set or have the wrong value, the server fails processing with an exception "possibly CSRF?" or something to that effect. Question is : Is this sufficient to prevent CSRF? Is there a way to set custom headers and change content type in a pure cross-site request forgery method?

• Alternative to COM blind aggregation in .NET for class with private interface

  When extending a COM class in unmanaged C++ where the original class has private interfaces, one way to do this is through the concept of blind aggregation. The idea is that any interface not explicitly implemented on the outer aggregating class is 'blindly' forwarded to the inner aggregated class. Now .NET as far as I can figure out does not support COM aggregation natively. A somewhat tedious workaround is to create a .NET class where you implement all the required COM interfaces directly on the .NET class and simply forward to an instance of the actual COM class for any methods you don't want to override. The problem I have is when the original COM object has one or more private interfaces, i.e. undocumented interfaces that are nonetheless used by some consumers of the original class. Using blind aggregation in unmanaged C++ this is a non-issue as the calls to the private interfaces are automatically forwarded to the original class, however I can't find any way of doing the same thing in .NET. Are there any other ways of accomplishing this with .NET?

• UI Controls layer on top of operating system.

  I'm kind of curious about what layer writing a UI platform to the level of Win32 or the X Windowing System would fall in the grand scheme of an operating system. What layers below do they primarily make use of, is it heavily based on direct communication with the graphics card driver (I can't imagine going though a rendering pipeline like OpenGL for this), or is there a graphical platform as part of the operating system which extracts this out a little more. I'm also interested in the creation of shells and the like, and I"m particularly curious as to how people go about creating alternative shells for windows, what do people look for when figuring out what methods to call or what to hook into, etc? I guess I'm fairly lost at these concepts and finding it difficult to find documentation on them. • How can you calculate the X/Y coordinate to zoom to

  Im writing a WPF application that has a zoom and pan ability, but what I want to also implement is the ability to zoom and pan "automatically" (via a button click). I have the methods all defined to zoom and pan, but Im having trouble telling the app the desired X/Y coordinates for the panning. Basically, I know that I want the control to be centered at a desired zoom level (say zoomed in 6X times), but the panning destination point is NOT the center point of the control because after the zooming, its been scaled. Does anyone know a way of calculating the desired X/Y position to pan to, taking into account the zooming as well? Do I just scale the desired destination Point? It doesnt seem to work for me...   I'm currently working on a website in PHP, and I'm wondering what the best practices/methods are to reduce the time requests take. I've build the site in a modular way, so a page would consist of a number of modules, and each of these would need to request information. For example, I have a cart module, that (if a cart is set) will fetch the cart with the id (stored in a session variable) from the database and return its contents. I have another module that lists categories and this needs to fetch the categories from the database. My system is built with models, and each model might also make a request, for example a category model will make a request to get products in that category.

• Is it possible to set properties on a Mock Object in Simpletest

  I normally use getter and setter methods on my objects and I am fine with testing them as mock objects in SimpleTest by manipulating them with code like: Mock::generate('MyObj'); $MockMyObj->setReturnValue('getPropName', 'value') However, I have recently started to use magic interceptors (__set() __get()) and access properties like so: $MyObj->propName = 'blah'; But I am having difficulty making a mock object have a particular property accessed by using that technique. So is there some special way of setting properties on MockObjects. I have tried doing: $MockMyObj->propName = 'test Value'; but this does not seem to work. Not sure if it is my test Subject, Mock, magic Interceptors, or SimpleTest that is causing the property to be unaccessable. Any advice welcome.

  As you may know we have got a new ActionResult called FileResult in RC1 version of ASP.NET MVC. Using that, your action methods can return image to browser dynamically. Something like this: public ActionResult DisplayPhoto(int id) { Photo photo = GetPhotoFromDatabase(id); return File(photo.Content, photo.ContentType); } In the HTML code, we can use something like this: <img src="http://mysite.com/controller/DisplayPhoto/657"> Since the image is returned dynamically, we need a way to cache the returned stream so that we don't need to read the image again from database. I guess we can do it with something like this, I'm not sure: Response.StatusCode = 304; This tells the browser that you already have the image in your cache. I just don't know what to return in my action method after setting StatusCode to 304. Should I return null or something?

  I have a route defined with several hardcoded (non-parameter) segments: routes.MapRoute(null, "suggestion/list/by/{tag}", new { controller = "Suggestion", action = "List", tag = UrlParameter.Optional }); Suppose I'm in the Index view of SuggestionController, which has a Suggestion object for Model, how can I create a link that matches that route? I'd rather use one of the provided helpers and keep the route name as null in order to avoid hard-coding to much on my views, but I can't figure out how to user these non-parameter segments in Html.ActionLink or RouteLink methods. I've even tried to render the link using plain ol' html <a href="/suggestion/list/by/<%=Model.Tag %>"><%=Model.Tag %></a> but this somehow didn't match the route either. There's probably a very simple solution and I might be over-complicating things in mi mind, but I'm at a loss. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

  Hi, How to create & access static string in iPhone (objective c)? I declare static NSString *str = @"OldValue" in class A. If i assign some value to this in class B as str = @"NewValue". This value persists for all methods in class B. But if I access it in class C (after assignment in B) I am getting it as OldValue. Am I missing something? Should i use extern in other classes?   Hey there, I'm trying to get the name for an iPhone/iPod device that the user entered in their iTunes. This is not, I repeat, not, necessarily what [[UIDevice currentDevice] name] returns (or any of its other methods). For instance, my iPhone is bound in iTunes to "iPhone 3G de Christophe…", to differentiate it from my wife's and other similar devices. That's the name I'd love to be able to grab. • Converting app to MVC and running it in both console and gui

  I have a simple java gui calculator, with 3 number systems (there are some bugs but that doesn't matter now). Currently all code is in one file. My task is to rewrite it as MVC, and add possibility to run it in either gui or console mode. How should I divide this program to organise it as M-V-C ? Is it written properly enough to add console functionality to it? (guess I'll have to change all methods invoking to JLabel Output to something simply storing an output String as a model argument and then having View to get it).   Hi I have a problem with a WCF Service I've just created. This was working yesterday but for some reason it's just stopped working. Now I'm getting a "The underlying connection was closed: The connection was closed unexpectedly." I've hunted all over the web but no-one seems to know the answer. • XCode Syntax Coloring Broken

  XCode frequently seems to lose it's mind, and doesn't color code system classes or provide correct "code sense" suggestions. This is endlessly frustrating. I have rebuilt the code sense indexes and completely restarted XCode with no change. I have built my project to make sure there are no errors and restarted. I have copied my files (sans .svn files) to a different location - same problem. I've already completely disabled the argument "placeholders" because they screw up my documents when i type too fast... all I'm asking for is for the "esc" key to display the correct list of properties and methods.

• Cant get the catch statement to catch the custom exception

• Logging with log4j on tomcat jruby-rack for a Rails 3 application

  I just spent the better part of 3 hours trying to get my Rails application logging with Log4j. I've finally got it working, but I'm not sure if what I did is correct. I tried various methods to no avail until my various last attempt. So I'm really looking for some validation here, perhaps some pointers and tips as well -- anything would be appreciated to be honest. I've summarized all my feeble methods into three attempts below. I'm hoping for some enlightenment on where I went wrong with each attempt -- even if it means I get ripped up. Thanks for the help in advance! System Specs Rails 3.0 Windows Server 2008 Log4j 1.2 Tomact 6.0.29 Java 6 Attempt 1 - Configured Tomcat to Use Log4J I basically followed the guide on the Apache Tomcat website here. The steps are: Create a log4j.properties file in $CATALINA_HOME/lib Download and copy the log4j-x.y.z.jar into $CATALINA_HOME/lib Replace $CATALINA_HOME/bin/tomcat-juli.jar with the tomcat-juli.jar from the Apache Tomcat Extras folder Copy tomcat-juli-adapters.jar from the Apache Tomcat Extras folder into $CATALINA_HOME/lib Delete $CATALINA_BASE/conf/logging.properties Start Tomcat (as a service) Expected Results According to the Guide I should have seen a tomcat.log file in my $CATALINA_BASE/logs folder. Actual Results No tomcat.log Saw three of the standard logs instead jakarta_service_20101231.log stderr_20101231.log stdout_20101231.log Question Shouldn't I have at least seen a tomcat.log file? Attempt 2 - Use default Tomcat logging (commons-logging) Reverted all the changes from the previous setup Modified $CATALINA_BASE/conf/logging.properties by doing the following: Adding a setting for my application in the handlers line: 5rails3.org.apache.juli.FileHandler Adding Handler specific properties 5rails3.org.apache.juli.FileHandler.level = FINE 5rails3.org.apache.juli.FileHandler.directory = ${catalina.base}/logs 5rails3.org.apache.juli.FileHandler.prefix = rails3. Adding Facility specific properties org.apache.catalina.core.ContainerBase.[Catalina].[localhost].[/rails3].level = INFO org.apache.catalina.core.ContainerBase.[Catalina].[localhost].[/rails3].handlers = 4host-manager.org.apache.juli.FileHandler Modified my web.xml by adding the following context parameter as per the Logging section of the jruby-rack readme (I also modified my warbler.rb accordingly, but I did opted to change the web.xml directly to test things faster). <context-param> <param-name>jruby.rack.logging</param-name> <param-value>commons_logging</param-value> </context-param> Restarted Tomcat Results A log file was created (rails3.log), however there was no log information in the file. Attempt 2A - Use Log4j with existing set up I decided to go Log4j another whirl with this new web.xml setting. Copied the log4j.jar into my WEB-INF/lib folder Created a log4j.properties file and put it into WEB-INF/classes log4j.rootLogger=INFO, R log4j.logger.javax.servlet=DEBUG log4j.appender.R=org.apache.log4j.RollingFileAppender log4j.appender.R.File=${catalina.base}/logs/rails3.log log4j.appender.R.MaxFileSize=5036KB log4j.appender.R.MaxBackupIndex=4 log4j.appender.R.layout=org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout log4j.appender.R.layout.ConversionPattern=%d{dd MMM yyyy HH:mm:ss} [%t] %-5p %c %x - %m%n Restarted Tomcat Results Same as Attempt 2 NOTE: I used log4j.logger.javax.servlet=DEBUG because I read in the jruby-rack README that all logging output is automatically redirected to the javax.servlet.ServletContext#log method. So I though this would capture it. I was obviously wrong. Question Why didn't this work? Isn't Log4J using the commons_logging API? Attempt 3 - Tried out slf4j (WORKED) A bit uncertain as to why Attempt 2A didn't work, I thought to myself, maybe I can't use commons_logging for the jruby.rack.logging parameter because it's probably not using commons_logging API... (but I was still not sure). I saw slf4j as an option. I have never heard of it and by stroke of luck, I decided to look up what it is. After reading briefly about what it does, I thought it was good of a shot as any and decided to try it out following the instructions here. Continuing from the setup of Attempt 2A: Copied slf4j-api-1.6.1.jar and slf4j-simple-1.6.1.jar into my WEB-INF/lib folder I also copied slf4j-log4j12-1.6.1.jar into my WEB-INF/lib folder Restarted Tomcat And VIOLA! I now have logging information going into my rails3.log file. So the big question is: WTF? Even though logging seems to be working now, I'm really not sure if I did this right. So like I said earlier, I'm really looking for some validation more or less. I'd also appreciate any pointers/tips/advice if you have any. Thanks!

  I have a db, that stores dates in OleDateTime format, in GMT timezone. I've implemented a class, extending Date in java to represent that in classic date format. But my class is locale-dependent (I'm in GMT+2). Therefore, it converts the date in the db as date - 2 hours. How do I make it convert the date correctly? I want my class to be locale-independent, always using GMT timezone.
