• Working with packed dates in SSIS

  One of the challenges recently thrown my way was to read an EBCDIC flat file, decode packed dates, and insert the dates into a SQL table.  For those unfamiliar with packed data, it is a way to store data at the nibble level (half a byte), and was often used by mainframe programmers to conserve storage space.  In the case of my input file, the dates were 2 bytes long and  represented the number of days that have past since 01/01/1950.  My first thought was, in the words of Scooby, Hmmmmph?  But, I love a good challenge, so I dove in. Reading in the flat file was rather simple.  The only difference between reading an EBCDIC and an ASCII file is the Code Page option in the connection manager.  In my case, I needed to use Code Page 1140 for EBCDIC (I could have also used Code Page 37).       Once the code page is set correctly, SSIS can understand what it is reading and it will convert the output to the default code page, 1252.  However, packed data is either unreadable or produces non-alphabetic characters, as we can see in the preview window.   Column 1 is actually the packed date, columns 0 and 2 are the values in the rest of the file.  We are only interested in Column 1, which is a 2 byte field representing a packed date.  We know that 2 bytes of packed data can be stored in 1 byte of character data, so we are working with 4 packed digits in 2 character bytes.  If you are confused, stay tuned….this will make sense in a minute.   Right-click on your Flat File Source shape and select “Show Advanced Editor”. Here is where the magic begins. By changing the properties of the output columns, we can access the packed digits from each byte. By default, the Output Column data type is DT_STR. Since we want to look at the bytes individually and not the entire string, change the data type to DT_BYTES. Next, and most important, set UseBinaryFormat to TRUE. This will write the HEX VALUES of the output string instead of writing the character values.  Now we are getting somewhere!   This is my domain : http://yon.ir and it mainly should be shown in search results with the keyword "????? ????? ????" in country of Iran it is shown in google search results with rank 13 (with that keyword) which is logical but with IPs of other countries , it's not shown even in 10 first google result pages. (but the domain is indexed and when I search the whole domain title, it shows up my site at first) it's about 10 days with this manner and the domain is not new .(it was working with its previous owner before) So , what's the problem here?

  I've just tried to install Ubuntu, but the installation progress bar hasn't progressed for a long time. When trying to install Ubuntu 10, the installation did finish. It said that Ubuntu needed to be restarted. After clicking OK, a list of errors popped up. I restarted the computer, and because i didn't remember that the boot loader is on flash, it didn't load. So now I'm installing ubuntu, but similar to 10 that couldn't restart it, I can't end the install; it says "installing the system". What should I do?

• Cannot get Virtualbox to install properly on Ubuntu 12.04

  I cannot get Virtualbox to install properly on my 12.04. I first went with a manual install for the .deb from the old builds section of the Virtualbox page. That .deb opened up the Software Center and installed. Then I got the error coming up of VT-x/AMD-V hardware acceleration is not available on your system. Your 64-bit guest will fail to detect a 64-bit CPU and will not be able to boot. which I can only assume was due to my Ubuntu version being 32-bit (System Details - Overview - OC type: 32-bit, right?) So I followed these instructions to remove the .deb manually, restarted my laptop, and then FOUND the actual Virtualbox install in the Software Center and installed from that (assuming it would give me the correct version I need for my system) So after all that (and then some), I'm still getting the same error when I connect to my new job's project in Virtualbox. Can anyone point me in the right direction of what to do here? This is the first time I've ever worked with Virtualbox, and no one at this company is using Ubuntu, so I'm on my own here.   Since my SO thread was closed i guess i can ask it here. What practice or practices are good 90% of the time when working with threading with multiple cores? Personally all i have done was share immutable classes and pass (copy) data to a queue to the destine thread. Note: This is for research and when i say 90% of the time i dont mean it is allowed to fail 10% of the time (thats ridiculous!) i mean 90% it is a good solution while the other 10% it is not so desirable due to implementation or efficiently reasons (or plainly another technique fits the problem domain a lot better).

  I have a list of Students that I should display to user on a web page in tabular format. The items are stored in DB along with SortOrder information. On the web page, user can rearrange the list order by dragging and dropping the items to their desired sort order, similar to this post. Below is a screenshot of my test page. In the above example, each row has sort order info attached to it. When I drop John Doe (Student Id 10) above the Student Id 1 row, the list order should now be: 2, 10, 1, 8, 11. What's the optimistic (less resource hungry) way to store and update Sort Order information? My only idea for now is, for every change in the list's sort order, every object's SortOrder value should be updated, which in my opinion is very resource hungry. Just FYI: I might have at most 25 rows in my table.

• How can I play a DVD-A (DVD-Audio) disc?

  I was able to play such a disc using VLC, but I am wondering if any music player supports the DVD-A format. UPDATE: I checked Rhythmbox and Banshee - I found no option like Play Disc or Open Disc, so I have no idea how I could even try to start playing a DVD-A disc. This has also nothing to do with missing plug-ins or codecs - the packages gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly, gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad and ubuntu-restricted-extras were installed on my machine before. I guess I am stuck with VLC (Totem shows a DVD menu, but then hangs). However, I am missing the regular music player experience - ability to change order of tracks, adding tracks to a playlist, listening only to selected tracks, etc. I found Idea #22415: Please add full support for DVD-Audio and LPCM at Ubuntu Brainstorm.

  Hi , I have been frequently asked questions like "Rate yourself in java" It goes like interviewer : Rate yourself in java on the scale of 10 me: 9 interviewer : Rate yourself in J2EE me : 8 .... But really I just come up with arbitrary numbers. Sure I know Java well , but what does it mean to say "9 out of 10" . I think it is a very subjective question, that does not make sense overall. The problem is ,if I say 9 , If I am not able to answer any question , the interviewer might think , "this guy just said 9" . On the other hand If I said 6 , there is a good chance the interviewer might think "He rates himself this low...not good" How do you respond to such questions ?

• Is it normal for a company to have programmers on such a rigid schedule?

  So I've been working at this job for a couple of months. I'm a little frustrated because I do my best work from 2 to 7. In previous jobs, I've come in at 9:30-10:00 and leave at 7. Some companies have been okay with this, others have not. But my current company insists on my being there at 8:30. Any deviation from this is a big deal. Is this typical? I have colleagues who are more 9:30 to 6:30, 10:00-7:00 guys...but maybe that is just startup culture? I don't see why, given that I don't meet clients, etc. what the advantage to having things be so rigid could be. I also don't see why if there is 15 to 20 minute variation sometimes in coming in, why people don't just assume that I will adjust when I leave... Are these unreasonable expectations as a developer or am I missing something?

  I've just been hired to be part of a group that is developing in C++. Before, I've been coding on and off at my job for the past 11 years (some C, some Fortran, some C++). The coding I've done was mostly maintaining and adding new features to one of our systems. The code, being 10 years old, did not contain all the modern C++ stuff. Lo and behold, my new job is filled with programmers with 5-10 years experience of pure coding and they all use the most modern aspects of C++ (C++11, template, lambda, etc, etc). They are expecting someone with that same experience... Well, I've been working for 15 years total but when I looked at their code, I couldn't understand half of it! :-| Anyone been in that situation? What would you recommend?

  I have several videos on my PC that I would like to shorten. For instance I have a 30 sec video where I want to have the section from sec 15 to 20 (a 5sec video). To cut this, I use avconv. avconv -i input.mp4 -ss 15 -acodec copy -vcodec copy -t 5 output.mp4 This command works pretty well. I have many videos I want to cut the same way. This is why I created a textfile containing the information: input-name, start of cut, length of cut, output-name. Those are written into in.txt that looks like this: input.mp4 15 5 output.mp4 input1.mp4 32 10 output1.mp4 input2.mp4 10 7 output2.mp4 ... My question is: How do I have to modify the avconv-command to cut my videos automatically? What I tried was this, but it didn't work at all: avconv -i $1 -ss $2 -acodec copy -vcodec copy -t $3 $4 < in.txt Any idea?
