• Python and database

  hello.. Am working on a personal project, where i need to manipulate values in a database-like format.. Up until now, am using dictionaries, tuples, and list to store and consult those values. Am thinking about starting to use SQL to manipulate those values, but I dont know if its worth the effort, because I dont know anything about SQL, and I dont want to use something that wont bring me any benefits (if I can do it in a simpler way, i dont want to complicate things) if am only storing and consulting values, what would be the benefit of using SQL? PS: the numbers of row goes between 3 and 100 and the number of columns is around 10 (some may have 5 some may have 10 etc)

  Hi I don't know the correct words for what I'm trying to find out about and as such having a hard time googling. I want to know whether its possible with databases (technology independent but would be interested to hear whether its possible with Oracle, MySQL and Postgres) to point to specific rows instead of executing my query again. So I might initially execute a query find some rows of interest and then wish to avoid searching for them again by having a list of pointers or some other metadata which indicates the location on a database which I can go to straight away the next time I want those results. I realise there is caching on databases, but I want to keep these "pointers" else where and as such caching doesn't ultimately solve this problem. Is this just an index and I store the index and look up by this? most of my current tables don't have indexes and I don't want the speed decrease that sometimes comes with indexes. So whats the magic term I've been trying to put into google? Cheers

  Here's the basic schema for my database Table user{ userid numeber primary key, count number } Table player{ pid number primary key, } Table user-player{ userid number primary key foreign key(user), pid number primary key foreign key(player) } Table temp{ pid number primary key, points number } Here's what I intend to do... After every match the temp table is updated which holds the id of players that played the last match and the points they earned. Next run a procedure that will match the pid from temp table with every uid of user-player table having the same pid. add the points from temp table to the count of user table for every matching uid. empty temp table. My questions is considering 200 players and 10000 users,Will this method be efficient? I am going to be using mysql for this.

• Why can't I share a folder on Vista?

  On Windows Vista, I right-click on a folder, Properties, Sharing tab, and either "Advanced Sharing" or "Share"-"Share" causes an error: Windows File Sharing This program will not run Access is denied. Close My user account is an "administrator" on this machine. I think this behavior changed since my computer was added to the new domain recently. I have other folders shared (from long ago), and they continue to be shared just fine.

• "Use windows xp style dpi scaling" disables automatic auto-hide of taskbar on W7. Workaround?

  We noticed that on W7 with DPI set to 125% or to 100% with ("Use windows xp style dpi scaling") turned off, our fullscreen mode (which sets the client rect of our window = desktop rect of the main monitor) no longer hides the task bar like it does for other settings. (The setting can be found in the Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Display section after clicking on the "Set custom text size (DPI)" link) I found the following interesting article: http://www.mathies.com/weblog/?p=908 So I set out to try to work around the bug in other means than manually hiding/restoring the taskbar visibility but so far I've failed and currently believe it's a bug in W7 (and possibly vista). The following applications also fail to work properly in fullscreen mode (the taskbar is still visible): * Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 * Microsoft Word 2007 * Adobe Reader 9.1.3 These apps work (probably by hiding the task bar through the WIN32 API): * Powerpoint Slide Show I also tried creating a brand new MFC-based app and use its "SetFullScreenMode()" functionality but it fails in the same way as all other apps on the list. • Database permissions and ORMs

  I've been using .NET's Entity Framework a lot lately and have absolutely no wish to go back to using Stored Procedures. Been shocked though that the company I'm building this project for had a policy where applications were only given accounts that only had permissions to access stored procedures! Apparently, they believe that there's a security risk involved in allowing applications to access the tables/views directly. I don't get this. My first question is, can someone enlighten me as to what kind of security risk applications having direct access to the database may pose? AND If that's the case, are there any other ORM solutions that can provide a workaround to this (I can't think of any logical possibility atm) that would allow me to circumvent the restrictions on the user account to be assigned to me? OR is my understanding that I'd need direct permissions for the tables and views wrong?

• Sleep uses more power than I expect

  When my new Dell laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium and 4GB RAM sleeps (not when it hibernates), it will drain the battery overnight. My old Dell laptop with XP Pro (2 GB RAM) could sleep for days without running out of battery. Is it normal that Windows 7 sleep is this power-hungry or should I troubleshoot my new machine? Edit: I know how to set the different sleep/hibernate settings. That is not what I'm asking.

• How can I tell which "explorer.exe" process is the main one?

  I have a batch file that changes a few registry files, and then restarts explorer.exe so that they take effect. I'm using the command taskkill /f /im explorer.exe and then explorer.exe which of course kills all the explorer.exe processes, including the explorer windows I have open. Obviously, I am using the option to Launch folder windows in a separate process. Is there any way I can determine which instance of explorer.exe is the main one, and just kill that?

• Database Engine not appearing in SQL Server listing

  I don't know if I'm searching for the wrong queries in google but I can't seem to find an answer to this. I have SQL Server 2008 installed in my pc and according to services.msc, I've got 2 database engines running: SQLEXPRESS (probably one that came along with Visual Studio) and MSSQLSERVER. When I try to connect only SQLEXPRESS is visible in the Server Name drop down list. I tried to explicitly state MSSQLSERVER by typing in MYPCNAME\MSSQLSERVER Didn't work. The best solution I could find in the internet was to enable stuff at Configuration Manager. Didn't work either (although I did find that TCP/VIA and all other options were disabled for MSSQLSERVER). Anyone have any other ideas on what I should try next or probably something that I overlooked?

I have a service running on a combination of Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 Desktops that I need to set as 'Automatic (delayed)' using a GPO setting, but from what I can see in the GPO editor, the delayed option is missing: Have I missed something obvious, or is this a rather basic omission from Microsoft?

  Microsoft offers the standalone Hyper-V server for free. I'm wondering if I can install roles other than the Hyper-V role on this? I know installing other roles alongside Hyper-V is a bad practice, but what I'm trying to ask is if the Hyper-V Server edition of Windows Server allows installation of other roles, like DNS server, File Server etc. Infact I'm not interested in running Hyper-V, just looking for a free windows server to install some roles on.   I was trying to put the Windows 8 Consumer Preview onto a thumb drive, when I was asked if I was OK with wiping it (I said yes I as it was blank). I had to sleep my computer during the wiping, and now I can't do anything with my dive. When I put it into my computer: When I click format disk: In short, the disk never reformats (I get an error message letting me know that Windows was unable to format the drive).   Consider a Parent / Child / GrandChild structure in a database table schema, or even a deeper hierarchy. These being in the same aggregate. One table DAYS keeps a single row per day, and has a "Date" field. This is the root table, or maybe a child of the root. No row can ever be deleted in this table. In this case, however complex my table schema looks like, however far away in the hierarchy any other table is, is there any reason why any other table would hold a Date value? Can't it instead just have a FK to the DAYS table. I obviously assume that the creation of these date fields happen not before such datefield exist in the DAYS table. I'm now thinking just about the date part to be relevant, not the time part. Not sure if all databases can store these individually. That's maybe relevant, but not really the focus of the question.

• I am attempting to pull all years and terms from database except the last term

  I have a logic problem: We have a database that has a donations table with name, address, last donation year, and last donation term (Spring and Fall). We want to pull all donors unless they donated in the last term (Spring or Fall). I have been trying to figure out the logic of pulling all years up to the current year while omitting the last term. So for example this year is 2012 and we are in the Spring term (I defined the spring term between 1/1 and 6/30) so I only want to display donors before and including spring 2011 (we will exclude the current term which is spring 12 and the last term which is fall 2011). The problem is I want to pull sprig 2011, fall 2010, spring 2010 etc, but only omit the current term and last term donated.

• Is there a way to transfer windows license to a different machine?

  I purchased a license and used Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit OS for a while. But recently I bought a 64 bit version to take advantage of the larger RAM the machine had and hence reinstalled the OS and activated a new license for the 64-bit version. Now, I am in a need to install the 32 bit version on another machine. How do I go about reactivating a license on another machine? (again the license currently is not used) Am I going to have issues with Microsoft not letting me reactivate that license on a different machine? Thank you.

  I have one Dropbox (I suppose) shared between my business account / PC and my wife's account / PC running Windows XP and a laptop with Windows 7. I created a folder and shared this one with both (or three) accounts. I created an underlying folder (no need to share, says the help) but it is not visible on the other PCs, so I've shared it to both accounts. Is this sharing necessary for every simple new folder?

• Magento module - database not initialized?

  Hello, So I've installed an extension in my Magento Enterprise. I've been able to configure new options in the admin interface after installing the module. However in the frontend it complains "table not found". Checking the database that is indeed true. Seems the mysql4-*.php scripts have not been run or failed. Is there a log or something I can look at to see what goes wrong? From what I've read (difficult to find documentation on this) the modules db should've been initialized on the first request after it was installed and activated. Any other suggestions to what I can check to find out why it's not initialized properly?

  How did stackOverFlow, excuse me if it wasn't the first implementation of this system. Decide what its initial tags where? I want to provide users with the best experience on my site and am implementing a tags system. I don't care about search engines or any of that. I just care about my users. Does any one have any advice about things that have failed or succeeded when they allowed users to tag things? Does any one know some good resources about the methodologies of user tagging? Does any one know some good resources about implementing a tags system from a programming perspective, database structures, theories, etc ? I'll give my check to who ever I feel points me in the best direction on the subject.
