• Reduce the file size of Excel

  Hi, I'm working in an excel application and providing a menu to the user to add a new worksheet in that excel application (Excel Workbook). The worksheet will be added once the user clicks the "OK" button and I'm using a template to add this worksheet (The template has lot of formatting and formulas in it) Lets say the file size is 10 MB after adding a worksheet if the workbook is saved. Then I close the Excel application and reopen it and save the file then the file size is getting reduced to 8 MB. Can anybody let me know what could be the reason for the same? Thanks, Ram

  I figured out that in order to turn [some name] into [some_name] I need to use the following expression: s/\(\[[^ ]*\) /\1_/ i.e. create a backreference capture for anything that starts with a literal '[' that contains any number of non space characters, followed by a space, to be replaced with the non space characters followed by an underscore. What I don't know yet though is how to alter this expression so it works for ALL underscores within the braces e.g. [a few words] into [a_few_words]. I sense that I'm close, but am just missing a chunk of knowledge that will unlock the key to making this thing work an infinite number of times within the constraints of the first set of []s contained in a line (of SQL Server DDL in this case). Any suggestions gratefully received....

• c# .net framework subtracting time-span from date

  I want to subtract a time-span from a date-time object. Date is 1983/5/1 13:0:0 (y/m/d-h:m:s) Time span is 2/4/28-2:51:0 (y/m/d-h:m:s) I can use the native DateTime and TimeSpan objects to do this, after converting years and months of the time-span to days (assuming a 30 day month and a ~364 day year). new DateTime(1981,5,1,13,0,0).Subtract(new TimeSpan(878,13,51,0)); With this i get the result: {12/4/1978 11:09:00 PM} But this is not exactly what i expected. If i do this manually (assuming a 30 day month) i get 1981/0/3-10:9:0 This is pretty close to what i'm after except i shouldn't get 0 for month and year should be 1980. So can someone please show me how i can do this manually and avoid getting a 0 month value? Also why do i get a completely different value when i use native classes?

  What's the best way of reading only the specific lines (based on matching text) from a file? • design function: underlying structure to store list of results for print to file

  is this a good approach to print a list of items to csv file with a sublist attached to each item. The gist of the function is when an item is found that does not exactly macth then a list of close matches is generated - this works now writing out one list at a time to a command window. For export to a csv file I think all the lists must be generated, stored and then written at once. Right now I use a struct to store the attributes printed, each struct is an item on the list - these structs are then added to a sorted stack and when printed they pop off into write out. Is a stack of stacks of structs a good design?

• Using methods on 2 input files - 2nd is printing multiple times - Java

  I have the following code to read in text, store in a hashmap as bigrams (with other methods to sort them by frequency and do v. v. basic additive smoothing. I had it working great for one language input file (english) and then I want to expand it for the second language input file (japanese - doens;t matter what it is I suppose) using the same methods but the Japanese bigram hashmap is printing out 3 times in a row with diff. values. I've tried using diff text in the input file, making sure there are no gaps in text etc. I've also put print statements at certain places in the Japanese part of the code to see if I can get any clues but all the print statements are printing each time so I can't work out if it is looping at a certain place.   I have a table of cities that all share the same area code: 367 01451 Harvard Worcester Massachusetts MA 978 Eastern 368 01452 Hubbardston Worcester Massachusetts MA 978 Eastern 369 01453 Leominster Worcester Massachusetts MA 978 Eastern The table has multiple area codes, all with multiple cities. What I'd like to do is only select one city from each area code and delete any extra cities from duplicate area codes. What would be the best query to accomplish this?   Hello, I have searched a lot to find a solution for my problem, but I can't find any specific solution. I need to change a value which is stored under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\APP_NAME. It is not possible to use .NET's registry functions, since they have drastic restrictions.   I am developing a Phonegap app with JQuery mobile with their latest stable versinos (Phonegap 3 and JQM 1.3.2) for Android platform. My app downloads feeds from Google Feeds API and saves in a SQLite database. But whenever it starts fetching and saving data from the web (the no of feeds that download at a time can be many), the other functionality such as button events halt and freeze. To be precise the a button that opens and closes a panel does not either open or close the panel until the data fetching stops. How am I supposed to solve this issue? The performance has dropped drastically due to this issue in my app.

  I'm learning C++. For me, my programming style is just what looks the best; it doesn't seem to follow the rules of any one particular style. • App crashes on back button / Activities & Intents

  I have an android application which starts a new activity Intent startAuthorization = new Intent(AndroidActivity, AuthorizeUser.class); startActivityForResult(startAuthorization,4711); When that new activity is done (a ok button is clicked) I call setResult(RESULT_OK, returnResult); finish(); Which works fine. In case the user doesn't click the okay button but uses the return button of the phone (this arrow pointing around to the left) the application has a force close. I have set a breakpoint on the first line of my method onActivityResult but the debugger never stops there. I have no idea where the issue comes up - how can I find out? Is there a method I have to overwrite to handle this back button?

• Adding on touch event to images inside gridview

  I have a gridview where each item has a image and a textview (an app), i added the onItemClick to the gridview in order to launch the app, i also removed the orange selection and made selector in xml so when pressed the text would change to grey and on release it would return to white. My problem is that i need the image to apply an alpha value when pressed and restore the previous alpha on release i tested a lot of ways and none did worked correctly. I came close with the updated answer from the autor of the question: How to set alpha value for drawable in a StateListDrawable?, but some how the state pressed never gets called, i don´t know if this is because i am using the onitemClick to launch the app or not. Also i since i can´t define the alpha on imageview xml i don´t know what else to do Any help will be appreciated

• dirtyFields with itemview

  I have a master/detail application that I'm building with backbone marionette. as the user clicks the master rows, the detail will show the row details. users need to be able to edit the row. I'd like the notify them if they try to 'leave' the row before saving. I was thinking that I'd use the dirtyFields plugin for this functionality. Has anyone else used these together? when I swap out my itemview, how do I initialize the plugin? when I close the view, is there anything I should think about to clean up the view? any thoughts would be appreciated. thx

• Can my thread help the OS decide when to context switch it out?

  I am working on a threaded application on Linux in C++ which attempts to be real time, doing an action on a heartbeat, or as close to it as possible. In practice, I find the OS is swapping out my thread and causing delays of up to a tenth of a second while it is switched out, causing the heartbeat to be irregular. Is there a way my thread can hint to the OS that now is a good time to context switch it out? I could make this call right after doing a heartbeat, and thus minimize the delay due to an ill timed context switch.

• IDisposable, does it really matter

  Coming from C/C++ a long time ago I still have a habit of ensuring that all resources are cleaned up correctly. I always ensure Dispose is called on IDisposable classes and implement Dispose patterns in my classes containing disposable objects. However, in my environment I'm more or less the only one doing this. Others just don't understand what I'm doing and think my code is more difficult to understand. They just create database connections, open streams etc without calling Close or Dispose. Sometimes they set a local or member variable to "Nothing" at the end of a method (guess their background). My problem is that their code works just as well as mine. Code that over time creates thousands of database connection objects just works. So, ignoring any arguments about code correctness, following guidelines etc, does IDiposable really matter? Has anyone actually ran out of resources from not Disposing objects?
