    What are the bcdedit commands necessary to setup dual boot between different installations of Windows?5 Background i recently installed Windows 8 onto a separate hard drive1. Now that Windows 8 in installed i want to dual-boot back to Windows 7. i have my two2 hard drives: So you can see that i have my two disks, with the partitions containing Windows: Windows 7: \\PhysicalDisk0 (partition 03) Windows 8: \\PhysicalDisk2 (partition 1) What i'm trying to figure out how is how to use bcdedit to instruct the thing that boots Windows that there is another Windows installation out there. Documentation There is some documentation on Bcdedit: Technet: Command Line Reference - Bcdedit Technet: Windows Automated Installation Kit - BCDEdit Command Line Options Whitepaper - BCDEdit Commands for Boot Environment (Word Document) But they don't explain how edit the binary boot configuration data If i had to guess, i would think that a Windows Boot Manager instructs the BIOS what program it should run. That program would give the user a set of boot choices. That leaves Windows Boot Loader do be a particular boot choice, that represents a particular installation of Windows. If that is the case i would need to create a new Windows Boot Loader entry. This means i might want to use the /create parameter: /create Creates a new boot entry: bcdedit [/store filename] /create [id] /d description [/application apptype | /inherit [apptype] | /inherit DEVICE | /device] So i assume a syntax of: >bcdedit /create /d "The old Windows 7" /application osloader Where application can be one of the following types: Apptype Description BOOTSECTOR The boot sector application OSLOADER The Windows boot loader RESUME A resume application Unfortunately, the only documentation about osloader is "The Windows boot loader". i don't see how that can differentiate between Windows 8 on one hard drive, and Windows 7 on another. The other possible parameter when /create a boot loader is >bcdedit /create /D "Windows Vista" /device "The Quick Brown Fox" Unfortunately the documentation is missing for /device: /device Optional. If id is not set to a well-known identifier, the option that is used to specify the new boot entry as an additional device options entry. Since i did not set id to a well-known identifier, i must set /device to "the option that is used to specify the new boot entry as an additional device options entry". i know all those words; they're all English. But i have on idea what it is saying; those words in that order seem nonsensical. So i'm somewhat stymied. i don't want to be like Dan Stolts from Microsoft: I found no content that was particularly helpful when I hosed my machine by playing with BCDEdit. This post would have been ok if there was much more detail especially on the /set command OSDevice, etc. So once I got my machine fixed, I documented the solution and the information is here.... i mean, if a Microsoft guy can't even figure out how to use BCDEdit to edit his BCD, then what chance to i have? Which is a long-winded explanation of why the Windows 8 installer didn't detect the existing Windows 7 install. Normally the installer would have automatically created the required entries for dual-boot. Not that the reason i'm asking the question is important. 2 Really there's three drives, but the third is just bulk storage. The existence of a 3rd hard drive is irrelevant to the question. i only mention it in case someone wants to know why the screenshot has 3 hard drives when i only mention two. 3 i arbitrarily started numbering partitions at "zero"; not to imply that partitions are numbered starting at zero. i only mention partitions because i don't see how any boot-loader could do its job without knowing which partition, and which folder, an installation of Windows is located in. 4 i'm asking about BCDEdit. i tried Visual BCD Editor. It seems to be a visual BCD editor. That is to say that it's a GUI, but still uses the same terminology as BCDEdit, and requires the same knowledge that BCD doesn't document. 5 For simplicity sake we'll assume that all installation of Windows i want to dual-boot between are Windows Vista or later, making them all compatible with the BCDEdit and the binary boot loader. The alternative would require delving into the intricacies of the old ntloader. Nor am i asking about dual booting to Linux; or how to boot to a Virtual Hard Drive (vhd) image. Just modern versions of Windows on existing hard drives in the same machine. Note: You can ignore everything after the word Background. It's all pointless exposition to satisfy some people's need for "research effort" before they'll consider being helpful. Some people have even been known to summarily close questions unless there is research effort. Some people have been know to close questions if there is too much research effort. Some people close questions when i put the note saying that they can ignore everything after the Background out of spite. Some people are just grumpy.

  • Getting this CSS to work in IE6

    Hi folks, Working on this page: http://www.karlsenner.dreamhosters.com/about.php and having trouble with the navigation in IE6. It validates as XHTML 1.0 Transitional. Works great in FF, IE 8, Chrome, and Windows Safari. In IE6 and Opera 10 the drop menus appear too high. I tried adding in the different versions of http://code.google.com/p/ie7-js/ but it did not solve the issue in IE. Since the menu is coming out of PHP and IE was not respecting the widths I just use PHP to get the nav image widths and write them to styles on the fly. Solved the width issue as IE acted like they should inherit their width from the wrapper.   • FOSUserBundle override mapping to remove need for username

    I want to remove the need for a username in the FOSUserBundle. My users will login using an email address only and I've added real name fields as part of the user entity. I realised that I needed to redo the entire mapping as described here. I think I've done it correctly but when I try to submit the registration form I get the error: "Only field names mapped by Doctrine can be validated for uniqueness." The strange thing is that I haven't tried to assert a unique constraint to anything in the user entity.     Server: Poweredge r620 OS: RHEL 6.4 Kernel: 2.6.32-358.18.1.el6.x86_64 I'm experiencing application alarms in my production environment. Critical CPU hungry processes are being starved of resources and causing a processing backlog. The problem is happening on all the 12th Generation Dell servers (r620s) in a recently deployed cluster. As near as I can tell, instances of this happening are matching up to peak CPU utilization, accompanied by massive amounts of "power limit notification" spam in dmesg. I don't think that's what is happening though. Dell suggested that the author try using the Performance profile, but that didn't help. He ended up applying some settings in Dell's guide for configuring a server for low latency environments and one of those settings (or a combination thereof) seems to have fixed the problem. Kernel.org bug #36182 notes that power-limit interrupt debugging was enabled by default, which is causing performance degradation in scenarios where CPU voltage regulation is kicking in. A RHN KB article (RHN login required) mentions a problem impacting PE r620 and r720 servers not running the Performance profile, and recommends an update to a kernel released two weeks ago. ...Except we are running the Performance profile... Everything I can find online is running me in circles here. What's the heck is going on?

  • IE6 iframe anchor links moves iframe up

    Hi, Having a real head scratching moment... I have a site where there is a footer div that always sits at the bottom of the screen (26px high), and above that I have an iFrame which sizes to 100% of the remaining height. This works well. Even clicking on anchor links inside the iframe works as it should in all browsers (apart from IE6). Unfortunately I still have to support IE6. What is happening in IE6 is that the footer jumps up the page with the iframe still above it when I click on an anchor link. The top part of the iframe is cut off. Even the iframe's scroll bars disappear under the top of the browser. I have created some screen shots to show you what I mean. I have blurred out the actual data for now.     Hello, I am using Seam with JBoss AS. In my application I have a SLSB which is also declared as a seam component using the @Name annotation. I am trying to inject and use this SLSB in another seam component using the @In annotation. My problem is that sometimes Seam injects the local interface (then the code runs fine) and sometimes seam injects the remote interface (then there is an error in execution of the code). I have tried doing all the things specified on this link: http://docs.jboss.org/seam/2.2.0.GA/reference/en-US/html/configuration.html#config.integration.ejb.container The SeamInterceptor is configured, I have specified the jndi pattern in components.xml file ( < core:init debug="true" jndi-pattern="earName/#{ejbName}/local"/ ), I have also tried using the @JndiName("earName/ejbName/local") annotation for every SLSB, I have tried setting this property ( org.jboss.seam.core.init.jndiPattern=earName/#{ejbName}/local ) in the seam.properties file. I have also tried putting the text below in web.xml file <context-param> <param-name>org.jboss.seam.core.init.jndiPattern</param-name> <param-value>earName/#{ejbName}/local</param-value> </context-param> Even after doing all the above mentioned things, the seam still injects the remote interface sometimes. Am I missing something here? Can anyone tell me how to resolve this issue and tell seam to always inject the local interface?   • Openswan + xl2tpd connections time out after a while

    I have a non-NATed Openswan+xl2tpd server (Ubuntu 12.04), to which I connect with a Windows 8 behind NAT. The client loses its connection after a while of doing nothing (between 30 and 60 minutes, but I didn't time it). The client doesn't have enabled that it should kill inactive connections. Nor does it ever go into sleep mode. I also tried setting the kill-after-time to 24 hours, but that didn't help. The NAT router behind which the client located is Debian Linux, and its router is a Cisco which connects us directly to the data center where the server is. None of our other connections, like SSH, get dropped with inactivity (because of cheap routers). I did however try turning on the keepalives in /etc/ipsec.conf: config setup (...snip...) nat_traversal=yes force_keepalive=yes keep_alive=10 but that didn't help. As you can see in the config later, dead peer detection's action is clear. That would be a first suggestion to fix, but I need clear, because people will be connecting from everwhere but the kitchen sink. Besides, as I said, in the test setup I have now, I can't see any device killing its connection.   • How to prevent jQuery FancyBox from closing immediately after submit?

    Hi! I'm loading an inline registration form in a FancyBox from jQuery. However after submitting the form, the box immediately closes while there is some feedback that I want to show the user in the FancyBox itself. This feedback is generated on the server side and is printed in the FancyBox. How can I make the box only closing when their is no feedback anymore? I was thinking about using ajax to just refresh the FancyBox itself and not the whole page after refreshing. But I just can't figure out how this ajax $.ajax({type, cache, url, data, success}); works... Also it seems like there's no reaction from the 'submit bind' in the javascript.   • DIV is picking max-width value as width value for DIV.

  • Heroku Problem During Database Pull of Rails App: Mysql::Error MySQL server has gone away

    Attempting to pull my database from Heroku gives an error partway through the process (below). Using: Snow Leopard; heroku-1.8.2; taps-0.2.26; rails-2.3.5; mysql-5.1.42. Database is smallish, as you can see from the error message. Heroku tech support says it's a problem on my system, but offers nothing in the way of how to solve it. I've seen the issue reported before - for example here. How can I get around this problem?   • MySQL is hogging my server resources

    Does anyone have any idea of what can cause this weird behaviour and how I go about fixing it? This is all coming from MySQL only (both RAM and CPU usage), for about 10 minutes after I reboot my Java game server (that has a pool of 256 connections). There are not that many queries and I think it may be more of a MySQL misconfiguration problem. My server: 3.20 GHz * 6 core / 24 GB RAM / 64 bit Windows Server 2003. My game server: Java server, with 256 MySQL connections pool (MyISAM engine), about 500,000 accounts, and 9 million rows of game items in database and about 3,000 players are connected. After about 15 minutes of the game server reboot, the server resumes its stability and CPU usage drop down to 1% ~ 5% and memory to 6 GB. Here is a copy of my MySQL configuration.   • Cannot get UISearchBar Scope Bar to appear in Toolbar (or anywhere) on iPad

    This is really causing me fits. I see a lot of info on putting a UISearchBar in the top row of a UITableView -- but I am putting the UISearchBar into the Toolbar at the top of my screen (on the iPad). I cannot find ANYTHING regarding how to handle UISearchBar and UISearchDisplayController using a UIPopoverController on the iPad. Any more info about the UISearchDisplayController using a UIPopoverController would be greatly appreciated. Please help with this as I am at my wit's end. Using IB, I put a toolbar on the IUView on the iPad. I added the following: Search Bar (not Search Bar and Search Display) to the toolbar. I set the options to be as follows: Show Cancel Button, Show Scope Bar, Scope Button Titles are: "Title1" and "Title2" (with Title2's radio button selected). Opaque, Clear Context and Auto Resize are checked. I hooked up the delegate of Search Bar to the "File's Owner" and linked it to IBOutlet theSearchBar. Just so you know I DO see the log of the characters I type, so the delegate is working. In the toolbar to the right of the search area? Where?

  • Help with SVN+SSH permissions with CentOS/WHM setup

    Hi Folks, I'll try my best to explain how I'm trying to set up this system. Imagine a production server running WHM with various sites. We'll call these sites... site1, site2, site2 Now, with the WHM setup, each site has a user/group defined for them, we'll keep these users/groups called site1,site2 for simplicity reasons. Now, updating these sites is accomplished using SVN, and through the use of a post commit script to auto update these sites (With .svn blocked through the apache configuration). There are two regular maintainers of these sites, we'll call them Joe and Bob. Joe and Bob both have commandline access to the server through thier respective limited accounts. So I've done the easy bit, managed to get SVN working with these "maintainers" so that when an SVN commit occurs, the changes are checked out and go live perfectly. Here's the cavet, and ultimately my problem. User permissions. Through my testing of this setup, I've only managed to get it working by giving what is being updated permissions of 777, so that Joe and Bob can both read and write access to webfront directories for each of the sites. So, an example of how it's set up now: Joe and Bob both belong to a group called "Dev". I have the master /svn folders set up for both read and write access to this group, and it works great. Post commit triggers, updates the site, and then sets 777 on each file within the webfront. I then changed this to try and factor in group permission updates, instead of straight 777. Each folder in /home/site1/public_html intially gets given a chmod of 664, and each folder 775 Which looks a little something like this drwxrwxr-x . drwxrwxr-x .. drwxrwxr-x site1 site1 my_test_folder -rw-rw-r-- site1 site1 my_test_file So site1 is sthe owner and group owner of those files and folders. So I then added site1 to Joe and Bobs secondary groups so that the SVN update will correctly allow access to these files. Herein lies the problem now. When I wish to add a file or folder to /home/site1, say Bobs_file, it then looks like this drwxrwxr-x . drwxrwxr-x .. drwxr-xr-x Bob dev bobs_folder drwxrwxr-x site1 site1 my_test_folder -rw-rw-r-- Bob dev bobs_file -rw-rw-r-- site1 site1 my_test_file How can I get it so that with the set of user permissions Bob has available, to change the owner and group owner of that file to reflect "site1" "site1". As Bob belongs to Dev I can set the permissions correctly with CHMOd, but It appears CHGRP is throwing back operation errors. Now this was long winded enough to give an overview of exactly what I'm trying to accomplish, just incase I'm going about this arse-over-tit and there's a far easier solution. Here's my goals 2 people to update multiple user accounts specified given the structure of WHM Trying to maintain master user/group permissions of file and folders to the original user account, and not the account of the updatee. I like the security of SVN+SSH over just SVN. Don't want to run all this over root. I hope this made sense, and thanks in advance :)

  • Why does my performance increase when touching the screen?

    For some reason my FPS jumps up considerably when I move my mouse around on the screen (on the emulator) while holding the left mouse button. Normally my game is very laggy, but if I touch the screen (and as long as I am moving the mouse around while touching) it goes perfectly smooth. I have tried sleeping for 20ms in the onTouchEvent, but it doesn't appear to make any difference.   • Diagramming Software for a Developer/Designer

    For a long time I've been looking for a good diagramming/vector-based drawing program that meets my needs as a developer. I'd like to: Draw database diagrams Draw flow charts Draw object-modeling diagrams (UML being the standard) Draw other free-form diagrams (basically boxes & arrows with the occasional clipart) Draw mockups of user interfaces and web pages EDIT: I want good-looking electronic-format diagrams that I can show to 3rd parties, not just something for my own internal use. EDIT 2: I'm also looking for Windows software, although I'm toying with the idea of switching to Mac, so a really good Mac-only product might get me to switch. Basically I need a good vector graphic program (with decent grouping, connecting lines, and ideally auto-routing). I'd prefer a diagramming tool that can also be used for drawing (for the UI mockups) rather than a drawing tool that can also be used for diagrams. I've tried Visio on several occasions, and every time I've been disappointed. The interface always seems to get in my way at some point. It's pretty close to what I want, and the latest version (I got the trail from MS) seems to be better than previous ones in terms of usability, but I really don't want to plunk down that sort of cash for a mediocre product. I've tried Dia and Inkscape, and while initially promising and with the right price tag, I found both of them to be lacking in several ways (including some recurring bugs). I've toyed with getting Adobe Illustrator, but I've never used it before, and I have a feeling that it wouldn't handle the diagramming aspect very well, and I don't want to buy a copy just to find out it doesn't meet my needs. So far, the product that I've had the most success with is, sadly, OpenOffice Draw. It's free of course (which lowers my expectations and thus improves my view of it) and its usability is pretty good, but in the end I'd like something more suited to diagramming. I'm willing to spend real money (in the $500-$1K range) for a really good piece of software if it does everything I want it to. The front runner is of course Visio but I'm hoping for more. Does anybody have any recommendations? CONCLUSION: @dlamblin had the most informative post, but the part I gained the most from was his/her (and others) mention of OmniGraffle, not Gliffy. I gave Gliffy a try, and it seemed neet for occational use, but since it's a Flash app (note: not AJAX as dlamblin mentioned) it's still a bit of a pain to use (no keyboard shortcuts for copy/paste was pretty much a deal breaker for me). I also tried SmartDraw, but it had 3-strikes-you're-out against it: The trial period was only 7 days long. It used some nonstandard (and visually jarring) GUI widget toolkit for its UI. At the very least it makes me suspicious (how do I know it will actually work & support the standard Windows features?) It crashed on me early into my trial. OmniGraffle looks like exactly what I want... except that it's Mac-only (so I couldn't give it a try). However, it got good reviews from my Mac-owning coworker, and I hope to try it on a friend's Mac soon. If it's good enough then I might spring for a new MacBook.

  • Perf4j Not Logging Correctly

    I setup some stop watch calls in my code to measure some code blocks and all the messages are going into my primary log and not into the timing log. The perfStats.log file gets created just fine but all the messages go to the root log which I didn't think was supposed to happen according to the docs I've read.   • mootools slideshow not working with JQuery. Need help !

    I am working on a site http://tapasya.co.in where i just impemented mootools slideshow. But I noticed that menubar that i was using stopped working, it was supposed to drop horizontaly but it is not being displayed now. I have used jquery for it. Please see the source of the web page. What can be the problem ? Mootools conflicting with javascript or some other problem.   • How do you automap List<float> or float[] with Fluent NHibernate?

    Having successfully gotten a sample program working, I'm now starting to do Real Work with Fluent NHibernate - trying to use Automapping on my project's class heirarchy. It's a scientific instrumentation application, and the classes I'm mapping have several properties that are arrays of floats e.g. private float[] _rawY; public virtual float[] RawY { get { return _rawY; } set { _rawY = value; } } These arrays can contain a maximum of 500 values. I didn't expect Automapping to work on arrays, but tried it anyway, with some success at first. Each array was auto mapped to a BLOB (using SQLite), which seemed like a viable solution. The first problem came when I tried to call SaveOrUpdate on the objects containing the arrays - I got "No persister for float[]" exceptions. So my next thought was to convert all my arrays into ILists e.g. public virtual IList<float> RawY { get; set; } But now I get: NHibernate.MappingException: Association references unmapped class: System.Single Since Automapping can deal with lists of complex objects, it never occured to me it would not be able to map lists of basic types. But after doing some Googling for a solution, this seems to be the case. Some people seem to have solved the problem, but the sample code I saw requires more knowledge of NHibernate than I have right now - I didn't understand it. Questions: 1. How can I make this work with Automapping? 2. Also, is it better to use arrays or lists for this application? I can modify my app to use either if necessary (though I prefer lists). Edit: I've studied the code in Mapping Collection of Strings, and I see there is test code in the source that sets up an IList of strings, e.g. public virtual IList<string> ListOfSimpleChildren { get; set; } [Test] public void CanSetAsElement() { new MappingTester<OneToManyTarget>() .ForMapping(m => m.HasMany(x => x.ListOfSimpleChildren).Element("columnName")) .Element("class/bag/element").Exists(); } so this must be possible using pure Automapping, but I've had zero luck getting anything to work, probably because I don't have the requisite knowlege of manually mapping with NHibernate. Starting to think I'm going to have to hack this (by encoding the array of floats as a single string, or creating a class that contains a single float which I then aggregate into my lists), unless someone can tell me how to do it properly.   • Bind9 as a caching resolver fails with mismatch ID on localhost but not external IP

    I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on a machine on my private network. I have bind9 installed (v9.8.1-P1) via aptitude, so it appears to have put all the bits in the right places and the service starts automatically. I plan on adding some zones later, but first I'm just trying to get it working as a caching resolver. I installed bind, configured it, and starting using it. Initially I thought it was working ok, but then I found some sites weren't being resolved. I've pinned it down to being linked to the size of the result and bind failing-over to TCP mode. So: I'm trying to find out why bind is failing when I query for domain info and the result is 512 bytes (causing a truncation and retry on TCP). Specifically it fails with ID mismatches if I point dig at localhost, but works when I query the machine's own IP (192.168.0.2). This appears to be backwards to the problem that most people have when using bind (fails on external ip, works on localhost). If I do dig @localhost google.com (which has a response of <512 bytes) then it works; I get no warnings, and plenty of output. $ dig @localhost google.com ; <<>> DiG 9.8.1-P1 <<>> @localhost google.com [snip lots of output] ;; Query time: 39 msec ;; SERVER: 127.0.0.1#53(127.0.0.1) ;; WHEN: Thu Oct 17 23:08:34 2013 ;; MSG SIZE rcvd: 495 If I do dig @localhost play.google.com (which has a larger response) then I get back something like: $ dig @localhost play.google.com ;; Truncated, retrying in TCP mode. ;; ERROR: ID mismatch: expected ID 3696, got 27130 This seems to be standard, documented behaviour - when the UDP response is large (here 'large' == 512 bytes) it falls back to TCP. The ID mismatch is not expected though. If I do dig @192.168.0.2 play.google.com then I still get the warning about using TCP mode, but it otherwise works $ dig @192.168.0.2 play.google.com ;; Truncated, retrying in TCP mode. ; <<>> DiG 9.8.1-P1 <<>> @192.168.0.2 play.google.com [snip most of the output] ;; Query time: 5 msec ;; SERVER: 192.168.0.2#53(192.168.0.2) ;; WHEN: Thu Oct 17 23:05:55 2013 ;; MSG SIZE rcvd: 521 At the moment I've not set up any zones in my local instance, so it's just acting as a caching resolver. My options config is pretty much unchanged from standard, I've got the following set: options { directory "/var/cache/bind"; allow-query { 192.168/16; 127.0.0.1; }; forwarders { 8.8.8.8; 8.8.4.4; }; dnssec-validation auto; edns-udp-size 4096 ; allow-transfer { any; }; auth-nxdomain no; # conform to RFC1035 listen-on-v6 { any; }; }; And my /etc/resolv.conf is just nameserver 127.0.0.1 search .local The problem definitely seems linked to the failover to TCP mode: if I do dig +bufsize=4096 @localhost play.google.com then it works; no warning about failover to TCP, no ID mismatch, and a standard looking result. To be honest, if there was a way to force bind to use a much larger UDP buffer, that'd probably be good enough for me, but all I've been able to find mention of is max-udp-size 4096 and that doesn't change the behaviour in any way. I've also tried setting edns-udp-size 512 in case the problem is some weird EDNS issue with my router (which seems unlikely since the +bufsize=4096 flag works fine). I've also tried dig +trace @localhost play.google.com; this works. No truncation/TCP warning, and a full result. I've also tried changing the servers used in the forwarder (e.g. to OpenDNS), but that makes no difference. There's one last data point: if I repetitively do dig @localhost play.google.com I don't always get an ID mismatch, but sometimes a REFUSED error.
