• I need some help creating a non-binary tree (or some other data structure that will better solve my problem)

  I have about ten lists of numbers and some strings. Each list has about <= 30K lines. Each line on a list has a distinct number. I need to build an efficient way of finding all the lines in each list that has the same 'control' number (or key for dB guys) and comparing what is in their string parts. I am writing this in Java. I have thought about using trees but my brain cells are about burnt now. I need some help.

I'm looking for a store to buy a suitable adaptor in locally and I can't find that particular adaptor - but I can see a Belkin F7D4101az. I think this is simply a newer model - but a Google search for "ubuntu belkin f7d4101az" brings no results - not even people trying to get it to work. Nothing. So I didn't want to purchase it without being sure. • Keeping application backend and UI synchronised

  Hi all. I have an app that works with a list of objects so has one central keyed list. The main window has a tree containing these object with some information, which is easy enough to populate as a one off event after loading. Now, the complicated part, any part of the application can add, remove, and more importantly change the details of those objects at any time (all in the same process) and I'd like the tree to update to suit. I have a few options including passing events back down from the object to the list to the form which seems to be the most flexible way. I can also do it lazily and repopulate the tree each time or periodically (very hackish). Does anyone have any better thoughts on how to structure this? This is being done in C# 2.0 but the concepts apply to any environment. Thanks

• GUI stops responding after a few seconds

  I'm dual-booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04. When I boot Ubuntu, the interface doesn't respond to my requests. I can launch applications from the unity launcher, but when I try to close them it doesn't respond; even when I try to maximize it does nothing. I tried restarting the GUI, but after a few seconds it happens again. I had the same issue with older versions of Ubuntu and never figured it out.

• Is Running programs by address common?

  I have read some of the things posted here and I keep reading about people running stuff like /foldername/executable -cmd NAME (was reading about a programmer using Eclipse, so he was testing something he made) I don't see things like that when I run things here (Ubuntu 12.04) because of the launcher and the Ubuntu button at the very top. That and Eclipse indigo has a button for running and testing things it makes. Just asking how and why it's common? (assuming it's the Terminal[Ctrl+alt+T] but I'm not sure)

  I thought I'd share my experiences here. I work for a small business with only ~20 users. I wanted the ability to use managed client preferences to assign things like the software update server. Basically the ability to manage my Macs easily and in a native way. At first I tried the magic triangle solution, but I found this to be very complicated. Not only does it require a Mac OS X Server, but it gives you two points of failure. Additionally each Mac workstation must be bound to both servers. Eventually I sucked it up and went with the schema changes documented here. I was hesitant at first, because the instructions require a lot of manual work. However it was fairly basic and only took me about an hour and a half. Below you'll find the schema changes file that was a result of my work. I followed the instructions exactly and double checked everything, after six months of having this in place things have been running great. Too good to not share.   I realize there are dozens of "apt-get update: failure to fetch" questions (I read through all I could find), but my present circumstance is unique to 12.04 and it affects all sources; not just launchpad. Additionally, I've tried several different servers in Europe and the U.S. as well as the "main server" (wherever that is) and they all yield the same result: I can't connect to any software sources. Additionally, I'm fairly certain the problem stems from the upgrade from 11.10-12.04 I performed this morning, as updates worked immediately before. Updates from the Update Manager worked fine and I could download some things (mutter) from the Software Center without incident, which makes me think I can connect to some subset of the Ubuntu servers (however, several other Ubuntu servers--like extras--and some canonical servers are listed as 'unable to connect'). • 12.04: Apt-Get Update: failure to fetch; can't connect to any sources

  I realize there are dozens of "apt-get update: failure to fetch" questions (I read through all I could find), but my present circumstance is unique to 12.04 and it affects all sources; not just launchpad. Additionally, I've tried several different servers in Europe and the U.S. as well as the "main server" (wherever that is) and they all yield the same result: I can't connect to any software sources. Additionally, I'm fairly certain the problem stems from the upgrade from 11.10-12.04 I performed this morning, as updates worked immediately before. Updates from the Update Manager worked fine and I could download some things (mutter) from the Software Center without incident, which makes me think I can connect to some subset of the Ubuntu servers (however, several other Ubuntu servers--like extras--and some canonical servers are listed as 'unable to connect'). • C#/.NET Little Wonders: ConcurrentBag and BlockingCollection

  In the first week of concurrent collections, began with a general introduction and discussed the ConcurrentStack<T> and ConcurrentQueue<T>.  The last post discussed the ConcurrentDictionary<T> .  Finally this week, we shall close with a discussion of the ConcurrentBag<T> and BlockingCollection<T>. For more of the "Little Wonders" posts, see C#/.NET Little Wonders: A Redux. Recap As you'll recall from the previous posts, the original collections were object-based containers that accomplished synchronization through a Synchronized member.  With the advent of .NET 2.0, the original collections were succeeded by the generic collections which are fully type-safe, but eschew automatic synchronization.  With .NET 4.0, a new breed of collections was born in the System.Collections.Concurrent namespace.  Of these, the final concurrent collection we will examine is the ConcurrentBag and a very useful wrapper class called the BlockingCollection. ConcurrentBag<T> – Thread-safe unordered collection. Unlike the other concurrent collections, the ConcurrentBag<T> has no non-concurrent counterpart in the .NET collections libraries.  Items can be added and removed from a bag just like any other collection, but unlike the other collections, the items are not maintained in any order.  This makes the bag handy for those cases when all you care about is that the data be consumed eventually, without regard for order of consumption or even fairness – that is, it’s possible new items could be consumed before older items given the right circumstances for a period of time. So why would you ever want a container that can be unfair?  Well, to look at it another way, you can use a ConcurrentQueue and get the fairness, but it comes at a cost in that the ordering rules and synchronization required to maintain that ordering can affect scalability a bit.  Thus sometimes the bag is great when you want the fastest way to get the next item to process, and don’t care what item it is or how long its been waiting. The way that the ConcurrentBag works is to take advantage of the new ThreadLocal<T> type (new in System.Threading for .NET 4.0) so that each thread using the bag has a list local to just that thread.  This means that adding or removing to a thread-local list requires very low synchronization.  The problem comes in where a thread goes to consume an item but it’s local list is empty.  In this case the bag performs “work-stealing” where it will rob an item from another thread that has items in its list.  This requires a higher level of synchronization which adds a bit of overhead to the take operation. So, as you can imagine, this makes the ConcurrentBag good for situations where each thread both produces and consumes items from the bag, but it would be less-than-idea in situations where some threads are dedicated producers and the other threads are dedicated consumers because the work-stealing synchronization would outweigh the thread-local optimization for a thread taking its own items. Like the other concurrent collections, there are some curiosities to keep in mind: IsEmpty(), Count, ToArray(), and GetEnumerator() lock collection Each of these needs to take a snapshot of whole bag to determine if empty, thus they tend to be more expensive and cause Add() and Take() operations to block. ToArray() and GetEnumerator() are static snapshots Because it is based on a snapshot, will not show subsequent updates after snapshot. Add() is lightweight Since adding to the thread-local list, there is very little overhead on Add. TryTake() is lightweight if items in thread-local list As long as items are in the thread-local list, TryTake() is very lightweight, much more so than ConcurrentStack() and ConcurrentQueue(), however if the local thread list is empty, it must steal work from another thread, which is more expensive. Remember, a bag is not ideal for all situations, it is mainly ideal for situations where a process consumes an item and either decomposes it into more items to be processed, or handles the item partially and places it back to be processed again until some point when it will complete.  The main point is that the bag works best when each thread both takes and adds items. For example, we could create a totally contrived example where perhaps we want to see the largest power of a number before it crosses a certain threshold.  Yes, obviously we could easily do this with a log function, but bare with me while I use this contrived example for simplicity. So let’s say we have a work function that will take a Tuple out of a bag, this Tuple will contain two ints.  The first int is the original number, and the second int is the last multiple of that number.  So we could load our bag with the initial values (let’s say we want to know the last multiple of each of 2, 3, 5, and 7 under 100. 1: var bag = new ConcurrentBag<Tuple<int, int>> 2: { 3: Tuple.Create(2, 1), 4: Tuple.Create(3, 1), 5: Tuple.Create(5, 1), 6: Tuple.Create(7, 1) 7: }; Then we can create a method that given the bag, will take out an item, apply the multiplier again, 1: public static void FindHighestPowerUnder(ConcurrentBag<Tuple<int,int>> bag, int threshold) 2: { 3: Tuple<int,int> pair; 4:  5: // while there are items to take, this will prefer local first, then steal if no local 6: while (bag.TryTake(out pair)) 7: { 8: // look at next power 9: var result = Math.Pow(pair.Item1, pair.Item2 + 1); 10:  11: if (result < threshold) 12: { 13: // if smaller than threshold bump power by 1 14: bag.Add(Tuple.Create(pair.Item1, pair.Item2 + 1)); 15: } 16: else 17: { 18: // otherwise, we're done 19: Console.WriteLine("Highest power of {0} under {3} is {0}^{1} = {2}.", 20: pair.Item1, pair.Item2, Math.Pow(pair.Item1, pair.Item2), threshold); 21: } 22: } 23: } Now that we have this, we can load up this method as an Action into our Tasks and run it: 1: // create array of tasks, start all, wait for all 2: var tasks = new[] 3: { 4: new Task(() => FindHighestPowerUnder(bag, 100)), 5: new Task(() => FindHighestPowerUnder(bag, 100)), 6: }; 7:  8: Array.ForEach(tasks, t => t.Start()); 9:  10: Task.WaitAll(tasks); Totally contrived, I know, but keep in mind the main point!  When you have a thread or task that operates on an item, and then puts it back for further consumption – or decomposes an item into further sub-items to be processed – you should consider a ConcurrentBag as the thread-local lists will allow for quick processing.  However, if you need ordering or if your processes are dedicated producers or consumers, this collection is not ideal.  As with anything, you should performance test as your mileage will vary depending on your situation! BlockingCollection<T> – A producers & consumers pattern collection The BlockingCollection<T> can be treated like a collection in its own right, but in reality it adds a producers and consumers paradigm to any collection that implements the interface IProducerConsumerCollection<T>.  If you don’t specify one at the time of construction, it will use a ConcurrentQueue<T> as its underlying store. If you don’t want to use the ConcurrentQueue, the ConcurrentStack and ConcurrentBag also implement the interface (though ConcurrentDictionary does not).  In addition, you are of course free to create your own implementation of the interface. So, for those who don’t remember the producers and consumers classical computer-science problem, the gist of it is that you have one (or more) processes that are creating items (producers) and one (or more) processes that are consuming these items (consumers).  Now, the crux of the problem is that there is a bin (queue) where the produced items are placed, and typically that bin has a limited size.  Thus if a producer creates an item, but there is no space to store it, it must wait until an item is consumed.  Also if a consumer goes to consume an item and none exists, it must wait until an item is produced. The BlockingCollection makes it trivial to implement any standard producers/consumers process set by providing that “bin” where the items can be produced into and consumed from with the appropriate blocking operations.  In addition, you can specify whether the bin should have a limited size or can be (theoretically) unbounded, and you can specify timeouts on the blocking operations. As far as your choice of “bin”, for the most part the ConcurrentQueue is the right choice because it is fairly light and maximizes fairness by ordering items so that they are consumed in the same order they are produced.  You can use the concurrent bag or stack, of course, but your ordering would be random-ish in the case of the former and LIFO in the case of the latter. So let’s look at some of the methods of note in BlockingCollection: BoundedCapacity returns capacity of the “bin” If the bin is unbounded, the capacity is int.MaxValue. Count returns an internally-kept count of items This makes it O(1), but if you modify underlying collection directly (not recommended) it is unreliable. CompleteAdding() is used to cut off further adds. This sets IsAddingCompleted and begins to wind down consumers once empty. IsAddingCompleted is true when producers are “done”. Once you are done producing, should complete the add process to alert consumers. IsCompleted is true when producers are “done” and “bin” is empty. Once you mark the producers done, and all items removed, this will be true. Add() is a blocking add to collection. If bin is full, will wait till space frees up Take() is a blocking remove from collection. If bin is empty, will wait until item is produced or adding is completed. GetConsumingEnumerable() is used to iterate and consume items. Unlike the standard enumerator, this one consumes the items instead of iteration. TryAdd() attempts add but does not block completely If adding would block, returns false instead, can specify TimeSpan to wait before stopping. TryTake() attempts to take but does not block completely Like TryAdd(), if taking would block, returns false instead, can specify TimeSpan to wait. Note the use of CompleteAdding() to signal the BlockingCollection that nothing else should be added.  This means that any attempts to TryAdd() or Add() after marked completed will throw an InvalidOperationException.  In addition, once adding is complete you can still continue to TryTake() and Take() until the bin is empty, and then Take() will throw the InvalidOperationException and TryTake() will return false. Also notice that once CompleteAdding() is called and the bin is empty, the IsCompleted property returns true, and the consumers will exit. Summary The ConcurrentBag is an interesting collection that can be used to optimize concurrency scenarios where tasks or threads both produce and consume items.  In this way, it will choose to consume its own work if available, and then steal if not.  However, in situations where you want fair consumption or ordering, or in situations where the producers and consumers are distinct processes, the bag is not optimal. The BlockingCollection is a great wrapper around all of the concurrent queue, stack, and bag that allows you to add producer and consumer semantics easily including waiting when the bin is full or empty. • svchost consuming more than 50% CPU all the time in windows 7

  Hello, I'm using windows 7 ultimate. svchost containing DCOM Server Process Launcher Plug and Play Power services is consuming more than 50% of CPU for most of the time. I found this blog post: http://blog.hansmelis.be/2007/06/17/windows-vista-long-delay-when-switching-songs-in-media-player/ That process is associated with two services: DCOM Server Process Launcher and Plug and Play. For the Vulcans among us, all logic stops there for a second. What do those two services have to do with WMP? The answer is provided by Vista's new audio engine. The new engine supports several audio "enhancements". But for the enhancements to work, the engine needs to determine if your hardware is up to the task. And when does it check that? Each time a sound output device is accessed. That's pretty nice if you can do a hot swap of sound hardware, but I don't see me doing that anytime soon. Anyways, it does provide us with the link to the correct service because checking hardware is done by the "Plug and Play" service. One might think that deactivating each enhancement would solve the problem, but that's wishful thinking. The configuration of the enhancements is located in the properties of the sound hardware. When opening the tab, I found out that no enhancements were active. Hmmm... so why does it check the hardware? Well, it does that in case you actually enable an enhancement. To completely stop the hardware checking, you have to tick the box labelled Disable all enhancements. As soon as you do that, Vista finally understands you don't want to use them buts thats for vista. Is it the same case with windows 7 too? and I couldn't find any "Disable all enhancements" in my controlpanelsounds (mmsys.cpl). Where can I find this option in windows 7? How to solve this?

  I've been trying for many days to get Red5 to install on Ubuntu 10.04. There seem to be a lot of people having trouble getting 10.04 and red5 0.9 working together. I've tried red5-0.9.1.tar.gz and red5_0.9.0-RC1_all.deb. The libraries above should be all that are needed according to Red5's documentation and I got the latest version of each.

• Windows 7 "freezes" (chills?), and then "unfreezes" after about 1 minute.

  Hi, I have an Acer Timeline 1810T netbook (4GB RAM) with Windows 7 x64. About once or twice a day, it "freezes" - the reason I put this in quotation marks is that it does not really freeze, as I you cant move mouse, etc. I can move my mouse and jump between different applications, but I cant use the applications for anything. So I can jump between notepad and Firefox, but I cant browse to a new web page. I have been trying to determine the source of this misery for a while now, and I suspect it has something to do with the hard drive - indirectly if not directly. Here are some screen shots of the resource monitor during a "freeze" and during normal operation: Freeze: http://imgur.com/Gcgq1.jpg Normal operation: imgur.com/mlHaI.jpg As you can see, CPU is fine during freeze, but the disk is going bananas.. Does anyone have an idea of what these reading means, or about the problem in general? There seems to be no specific activity that sets this off - it can be during browsing, or during media playback with nothing else open. The fact that I can see navigate to applications but not use them might suggest a hard drive problem as well? Maybe I can access the stuff that is in RAM, but not anything that would require interaction with the drive.. Very appreciative of any help!

• Usage of putty in command line from Hudson

  Hi, I'm trying to use putty in command line from an hudson job. The command is the following one: putty -ssh -2 -P 22 USERNAME@SERVER_ADDR -pw PASS -m command.txt Where 'command.txt' is a shell script to execute in the server through SSH. If i launch this command from the Window command prompt, it works, the shell script is executed on the server machine. If i launch a build of the hudson job configured with this batch command, it doesn't work. The build is running... and running... and running.. without doing anything, and i have to stop it manually. So my question is: Is it possible to launch an external programm (i.e. putty) from an hudson job ? ps: i tried SSH plugin but... not a really good plugin (pre/post build, fail status of the commands launched not caught by hudson, etc.) Thanks in advance for your help. • New tomcat install on OSX choking on startup.

  I've completed a fresh install of Tomcat6 on an OS X box that didn't have it before. It's behaved a bit strangely in other ways, but the current hang-up is that it won't start at all. In response to running startup.sh, the catalina.out log collects this error: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/apache/catalina/startup/Bootstrap Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: org.apache.catalina.startup.Bootstrap at java.net.URLClassLoader$1.run(URLClassLoader.java:202) at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method) at java.net.URLClassLoader.findClass(URLClassLoader.java:190) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:307) at sun.misc.Launcher$AppClassLoader.loadClass(Launcher.java:301) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:248) Other bits of strangeness noticed with this installation: the .sh scripts in the bin directory had no execute permission, and had to be manually chmodded. The log folder wasn't created, causing an earlier script crash. After I manually created the log folder, the startup script made it to this new error before failing. Running other scripts in the bin folder generates similar error messages involving NoClassDefFoundError. Bootstrap.java is indeed in the right place, though Bootstrap.class isn't in the same folder. For that matter, if any of the myriad class files for tomcat should have already been generated from their .java files, I haven't seen it.

• How to get Synergy working on Ubuntu 11.10 and Windows 7?

  I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 32-bit and Windows 7 64-bit, however, Synergy only works when a window (application or folder) is open and touching the edge of the screen where the mouse should "jump". In other words, if a window is open and maximized, Synergy works normally. Without any windows, the mouse does not jump to the other screen. My steps: (Ubuntu) apt-get install -y quicksynergy (Windows) Install Synergy (I've tried both 1.3.8 and 1.4.8 and both 32 and 64-bit) On Ubuntu 11.10 32-bit (Synergy Server config): ~/.quicksynergy/synergy.conf section: screens myubuntu: mywin7: end section: links myubuntu: right = mywin7 mywin7: left = myubuntu end On Ubuntu 11.10 32-bit: $ /usr/bin/synergys -f --config .quicksynergy/synergy.conf ... 2012-04-25T14:04:12 NOTE: client "mywin7" has connected /build/buildd/synergy-1.3.6/lib/server/CServer.cpp,287 (output hangs here) On Windows 7 64-bit: Synergy 1.3.8 Client on Microsoft Windows 7 x86 (WOW64) started client connecting to 'myubuntu': ###.###.###.###:24800 connected to server (output hangs here) At this point, things should work, but my mouse still can't change screens unless a window is maximized on my Ubuntu machine. Everything is running on port 24800. No firewall on Ubuntu. Firewall port 24800 open on Windows 7. This was previously working on Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7 (so only Ubuntu has been upgraded). I'm open to using either 32 or 64-bit on either server or client side, but I just want to get it working on Ubuntu 11.10 and Windows 7! I'm also using Ubuntu Classic (no effects), and not Unity.

• Cut (smart edit) .mts (AVCHD Progressive) files un Ubuntu Lucid

  I have a bunch of .mts files containing AVCHD Progressive video recorded by a Panasonic camera, and I need software on Ubuntu Lucid with which I can remove the boring parts, and concatenate the interesting parts, all this without reencoding the video stream. It's OK for me to cut at keyframe boundary. If Avidemux was able to open the files, it would take about 60 hours of work for me to cut the files. (At least that was it last time I tried with similar videos, but of a file format supported by Avidemux.) So I need a fast, powerful and stable video editor, because I don't want that 60 hours of work go up to 240 or even 480 hours just because the tool is too slow or unstable or has a terrible UI. I've tried Avidemux 2.5.5 and 2.5.6, but they crash trying to open such a file, even if I convert the file to .avi first using mencoder -oac copy -ovc copy. mplayer can play the files. I've tried Avidemux 2.6.0, which can open the file, but it cannot jump to the previous or next keyframe etc. (if I make it jump to the next keyframe, and then to the previous keyframe, it doesn't end up at the original keyframe, sometimes displays an error etc.). Also I'm not sure if Avidemux 2.6.x would let me save the result without reencoding. I've tried Kdenlive 0.7.7.1, but playback is very choppy, and it cannot play audio at all (complaining that SDL cannot find the device; but many other programs on the system can play audio). It would be a pain to work with. I've tried converting the .mts file to .mkv using ffmpeg -i input.mts -vcodec copy -sameq -acodec copy -f matroska output.mkv, but that caused too much visible distortions in the video in both mplayer and Avidemux. I've tried converting the .mts file with TsRemux.exe, but Avidemux 2.5.x still can't open that file. Is there another program to cut and concatenate the files? Is there a preprocessor which would create a file (without reencoding the video) on which Avidemux wouldn't crash?

• Intel Motherboard Lightning Victim Dies Hard

  Today, I have a more hardware-related question. I have an Intel board, and I really do not know which board it is, I built the machine for a relative, but he forgot to keep the documentation. Long story short, the computer was disconnected during a lightning storm, but a lightning strike travelled in via the ethernet cable (It was directly connected to a power brick commonly seen on those long distance ISP Wireless transmitters), and the motherboard was shocked. I am attempting to get this PC going. The problem is as follows: The computer will randomly reboot, just in the middle of anything as it pleases. May load to EFI (or whatever BIOS is nowadays), may load to bootloader, may even get to the OS. But before 5 minutes is up, the system will always die. Out of curiosity, I plugged my voltmeter in to a molex connector. On the 5V side, it gets a good, consistant +5.13V. On the 12V side, it fluctuates, as follows: Upon immediate startup, it soars to 12.11-12.13V. It will now do one of two things: it will immediately jump down to 12.04-12.05V, or hover for about a minute at 12.11-12.13, then jump down. It seems the longer the voltage stays at 12.11-12.13, the shorter the machine will stay running. Also, post codes, whenever the machine locks up, but does not die hard, seem to be between "AA" and "AC". Does this make any sense to anybody? Do you all think this motherboard is salvageable? It was an expensive bugger, and I'd prefer to not replace it.
