• how to properly set environment variables

  I've recently started using Windows (having used Ubuntu up until now) and I find myself unable to properly set environment variables. Whenever I set them they don't seem to work. I've been going to Start-Edit Environment Variables for your Account and editing the PATH value in the upper half of the GUI. Here's what I've got so far. ;C:\Chocolatey\bin;C:\tools\mysql\current\bin;C:\Program Files (x86)\Git\bin;C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.6\bin\;C:\Python33\Scripts; These are each the parent directories of the executables I'd like to be able to run by name from CMD, but mysql, git, and pip aren't being recognized. Am I doing something wrong syntactically or at a general understanding level? I'd like to be able to run these commands without having to specify the full path to the executables every time. • Current wisdom on SQL Server and Hyperthreading?

  Lots of articles out there (see Slava Oks's original SQL 2000 article and Kevin Kline's SQL 2005 update) recommend disabling hyperthreading on SQL servers, or at least testing your specific workload before enabling it on your servers. This issue is gradually becoming less relevant as true multi-core processors replace hyperthreaded ones, but what's the current wisdom on this issue? Does this advice change any with SQL 2005 64-bit, or SQL 2008, or Windows Server 2008? Ideally, this should be tested in advance in a staging environment, but what about for servers that have already made it into production with HT enabled? How can I tell if performance issues we're experiencing might be related to HT? Is there some specific combination of perfmon counters that might point me in that direction, as opposed to all the other things I normally pursue when working on improving SQL performance? Edit: This is especially attractive because of the potential for an across the board improvement for some of my high-cpu servers, but the client is going to want to see something concrete that helps me identify which servers really could benefit from disabling hyperthreading. Of course, conventional performance troubleshooting is ongoing, but sometimes any little bit helps.

• Gerrit ssh key setup on windows server

  I am attempting to configure google's 'Gerrit' code review web app on a Windows server 2008 virtual machine on our internal network. We are using Apache Tomcat (6.0.36) to host the web app and have deployed the gerrit.war to tomcats webapp folder, setup the context.xml, web.xml etc for the web app correctly i believe. However when i startup Tomcat using the $CATALINA_HOME/bin/startup.bat i get the following message in the tomcat logs: *Dec 07, 2012 1:03:54 PM org.apache.catalina.core.StandardContext listenerStart SEVERE: Exception sending context initialized event to listener instance of class com.google.gerrit.httpd.WebAppInitializer com.google.inject.CreationException: Guice creation errors:* 1) No SSH keys under C:\Gerrit\config\etc while locating com.google.gerrit.sshd.HostKeyProvider at com.google.gerrit.sshd.SshModule.configure(SshModule.java:90) I have created a is_rsa.pub SSH key and placed it in the specified directory to no avail. I have been googling this for about a week now and can't seem to find any information about the file or format it is expecting... documentation on setting gerrit up on windows seems hard to come by! Can anyone provide useful information about how to correctly configure a host SSH key in this context?

• Git push over http (using git-http-backend) and Apache is not working

  I have desperately been trying to get push for git working through the "smart-http" mode using git-http-backend. However after many hours of testing and troubleshooting, I am still left with error: Cannot access URL http://localhost/git/hello.git/, return code 22 fatal: git-http-push failed` I am using latest versions of Ubuntu (12.04), Apache2 (2.2.22) and Git (1.7.9.5) and have followed different tutorials found on the Internet, like this one http://www.parallelsymmetry.com/howto/git.jsp. • UAC being turned off once a day on Windows 7

  I have strange problem on my HP laptop. This began to happen recently. Whenever I start my machine, Windows 7 Action Center displays the following warning: You need to restart your computer for UAC to be turned off. Actually, this does not happen if it happened once on a specific day. For example, when I start the machine in the morning, it shows up; but it never shows up in the subsequent restarts within that day. On the next day, the same thing happens again. I never disable UAC, but obviously some rootkit or virus causes this. As soon as I get this warning, I head for the UAC settings, and re-enable UAC to dismiss this warning. This is a bothersome situation as I can't fix it. First, I have run a full scan on the computer for any probable virus and malware/rootkit activity, but TrendMicro OfficeScan said that no viruses have been found. I went to an old Restore Point using Windows System Restore, but the problem was not solved. What I have tried so far (which couldn't find the rootkit): TrendMicro OfficeScan Antivirus AVAST Malwarebytes' Anti-malware Ad-Aware Vipre Antivirus GMER TDSSKiller (Kaspersky Labs) HiJackThis RegRuns UnHackMe SuperAntiSpyware Portable Tizer Rootkit Razor (*) Sophos Anti-Rootkit SpyHunter 4 There are no other strange activities on the machine. 8204 bytes As suggested in this very similar question, I have run full scans (+boot time scans) with RegRun and UnHackMe, but they also did not find anything. I have carefully examined all entries in the Event Viewer, but there's nothing wrong. Now I know that there is a hidden trojan (rootkit) on my machine which seems to disguise itself quite successfully. Note that I don't have the chance to remove the HDD, or reinstall the OS as this is a work machine subjected to certain IT policies on a company domain. Despite all my attempts, the problem still remains. I strictly need a to-the-point method or a pukka rootkit remover to remove whatever it is. I don't want to monkey with the system settings, i.e. disabling auto runs one by one, messing the registry, etc. EDIT 2: I have found an article which is closely related to my trouble: Malware can turn off UAC in Windows 7; “By design” says Microsoft.   As the title says, I have 200Mbps of streaming video traffic coming into my command center. How do I split the load between routers? Setup is like this: fiber --- router --- switch --- workstations I'm sorry I haven't dealt with this much traffic before. so please be gentle if you're going to kick me out :) EDITED FOR DETAILS: Okay, this specific project is for our company's IP CCTV system. We have deployed over 100++ cameras all over a building/campus and we have estimated each camera to take about 2Mbps of bandwidth each. But coming into our command center, they have to be on a router since it'll get more than 200++ cameras next year (and I don't want to have too many hosts on one subnet). My plan was to have the 1st hundred on a 172.16.9.x block and the 2nd hundred on a 172.16.10.x block (all /24). The servers I have are currently sized to match (about 5 dual 6-core xeons) and I'd have about 19 workstations all streaming video from the 5 servers. (servers pull video from the cameras). But 200Mbps of constant traffic? How the hell do I even break this up? I need to have 1 gateway, to manage the routes... I honestly think I'm way in over my head.

  We are struggling with our users visiting infected or "attack" sites and Phising in general. Most of our machines are protected by an Enterprise anti virus and monitoring solution (McAffe ePO) and we try to get people to use Firefox... But no AV is perfect and we have to endure personal machines as well (albeit on their own 'Plague' VLANs) and would like to do something about Phishing as our users seem intent on disclosing their passwords to the world... To complicate matters we don't want to implement a block for many many reasons instead we would like to implement something akin to Firefox's "Reported Scam/Phish/Attack Site" - "Get me out of here" or crucially "Let me in anyway", giving the user a choice to still infect themselves if they feel like it (or look at a site incorrectly blacklisted). The reason we can't just use Firefox is we have a core enterprise App only certified on IE6&7 - thank you Oracle.   I have a customized live fedora 12 USB which is working fine. What i want to do is to make a partition of my hard disk bootable so that my customized fedora can be run from hard disk. To accomplish this i did the following steps: Created a primary partition(/dev/sda2) and format it as ext3 and set it as active. Copy all the files in the live usb to /dev/sda2. Following are the live usb contents(all directories): a. boot b. EFI c. • Analyze a BSOD (irql_less_than_or_equal)

  Hello. About 2 months ago I bought a new system and built it at home: Mother board: XFX X58i Processor: Core i7 920, using the stock cooler Memory: 3x2GB Corsair DDR3 1600 Video card: NVIDIA GTS 250 (1GB) Hard disk: 2x WD 500GB, 7200rpm I have 2 screens plugged into the video card, and the system is connected to a 550W PSU. Nothing is overclocked. After building the system, I stressed it a lot with Prime95 and rthdribl to check its stability. All my tests were perfect. So I reinstalled Win 7 x64 Professional and started using it normally. The first week (2010-03-15) I got the infamous irql_less_than_or_equal BSOD. Ten days after (2010-03-24) I got another one. Then on 2010-04-09, 2010-05-04. Since 2 days ago it became worse: I got one bluescreen per day! (2010-05-12, 2010-05-13, 2010-05-14). I installed BlueScreenView to try to obtain some information, but I'm not able to extract any useful information apart from the bug check string (irql_less_than_or_equal), and that it was caused by ntoskrnl.exe (the first three at ntoskrnl.exe+71f00, the last 4 at ntoskrnl.exe+70600 -- which I suspect could be the same thing, as Microsoft could have patched this file in the mean time, so the address of the function causing it changed). Then I stressed my memory sticks with memtest, they worked perfectly. After booting, I've stressed my GPU with FurMark and RTHDRIBL, everything was fine. Then I stressed the CPU with 4 instances of Prime95 while monitoring the temperature -- that never exceeded 85oC with the case closed --, everything fine. Finally I've stressed the whole system with HeavyLoad for a looooong time, everything worked just fine. So, I have stressed most of the components of the system, but couldn't get any useful information from it. Do you have any hint on what else can I do to find the culprit? Thanks Bruno

  Hello Every one. I have purchased a DVD of Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6.2) I purchased a Mac mini with Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5.7) I tried to install Mac OS X 10.6.2 Everything went perfectly. System was installed successfully. But the problem that I faced is as follows. System was installed but my older data remained as it is. (means installation didn't format every thing - means installation was done on upgrade basis.) Now, my system works with very low speed. Previous performance of Mac mini was double as compare to current upgrade version. Now - my question are as follows. Does an upgrade installation causes the performance issues in Mac OS X? Or is Snow Leopard too demanding for the Mac mini? ( 2 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1GB RAM - is this configuration OK for Snow Leopard? ) Does a fresh install work better than an upgrade?

  I would like to limit any process from using more than 500 MB of RAM. AFAIK this is done using RSS in /etc/security/limits.conf but the process called gnome-panel apparently is using 618436 kB of VmRSS. • Compiling Gearman PHP Library for CentOS 5.8

  I've been trying to get Gearman compiled on CentOS 5.8 all afternoon. Unfortunately I am restricted to this version of CentOS by my CTO and how he has our entire network configured. I think it's simply because we don't have enough resources to upgrade our network... But anyways, the problem at hand. I have searched through Server Fault, Stack Overflow, Google, and am unable to locate a working solution. What I have below is stuff I have pieced together from my searching. Searches have told said to install the following via yum: yum -y install --enablerepo=remi boost141-devel libgearman-devel e2fsprogs-devel e2fsprogs gcc44 gcc-c++ To get the Boost headers working correctly I did this: cp -f /usr/lib/boost141/* /usr/lib/ cp -f /usr/lib64/boost141/* /usr/lib64/ rm -f /usr/include/boost ln -s /usr/include/boost141/boost /usr/include/boost With all of the dependancies installed and paths setup I then download and compile gearmand-1.1.2 just fine. wget -O /tmp/gearmand-1.1.2.tar.gz https://launchpad.net/gearmand/1.2/1.1.2/+download/gearmand-1.1.2.tar.gz cd /tmp && tar zxvf gearmand-1.1.2.tar.gz ./configure && make -j8 && make install That works correctly. So now I need to install the Gearman library for PHP. I have attempted through PECL and downloading the source directly, both result in the same error: checking whether to enable gearman support... yes, shared not found configure: error: Please install libgearman What I don't understand is I installed the libgearman-devel package which also installed the core libgearman. The installation installs libgearman-devel-0.14-3.el5.x86_64, libgearman-devel-0.14-3.el5.i386, libgearman-0.14-3.el5.x86_64, and libgearman-0.14-3.el5.i386. Is it possible the package version is lower than what is required? I'm still poking around with this, but figured I'd throw this up to see if anyone has a solution while I continue to research a fix. • SQL Server 2005 standard filegroups / files for performance on SAN

  Ok so I've just been on a SQL Server course and we discussed the usage scenarios of multiple filegroups and files when in use over local RAID and local disks but we didn't touch SAN scenarios so my question is as follows; I currently have a 250 gig database running on SQL Server 2005 where some tables have a huge number of writes and others are fairly static. The database and all objects reside in a single file group with a single data file. The log file is also on the same volume. My interpretation is that separate data files should be used across different disks to lessen disk contention and that file groups should be used for partitioning of data. However, with a SAN you obviously don't really have the same issue of disk contention that you do with a small RAID setup (or at least we don't at the moment), and standard edition doesn't support partitioning. So in order to improve parallelism what should I do? My understanding of various Microsoft publications is that if I increase the number of data files, separate threads can act across each file separately. Which leads me to the question how many files should I have. One per core? • Does AMD Cool n Quiet Slow Down Your System?

  I discovered today that having AMD Cool n Quiet enabled in my BIOS appears to be slowing down my Windows XP SP2 system by about 29% on memory & CPU intensive workloads. I was wondering if (a) anyone else had encountered this, (b) anyone can offer an explanation, (c) there are any negatives I need to be aware of if I keep AMD CnQ disabled. With some superficial testing so far, I don't immediately notice any difference with CnQ off (other than the performance being what I expected from this new hardware). It seems to ramp up the CPU fan a little bit as my program maxes out 1 core, but that's the same as with CnQ on. And when I let the system idle the CPU fan slows down and the systems as quiet as a mouse (after years of 6 small fans churning like they want to go into orbit it's nice to again have a system where I can hear the HDDs seeking). Bonus question: Does CnQ cause issues with system stability? I ask because the reason I disabled it was because I have had a few freezes and 1 spontaneous reboot with my new hardware.

• Media Center setup won't complete for watching TV

  I have a problem watching TV in Media Center. The TV constantly pauses 1/2 second then plays 1 second, pauses 1/2 second, plays 1 second - it is constant and does not vary. This problem occurs on all channels, live or recorded. The bottom 5th of the screen is solid green. I know the problem is Media Center because I can use Pinnacle's TVCenterPro and there is no skipping/pausing (and not green on bottom). I was using cable, and switched to DirecTV (satellite). Trying to do "Set up TV signal" in Media Center seems to be what broke it. I get an error "IR Hardware not detected." I can use the remote to "try again" - so the IR hardware works fine (Media Center's remote/sensor). I tried plugging the IR Blaster into both ports, and I tried a different USB port for the IR receiver. I can't complete the setup. Media Center was playing it okay before I tried to run setup. (I ran setup to try to do recording with Media Center.) Pinnacle PCTV 800i HD PCI card (coax cable from DirecTV tuner), ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics, Windows XP SP3 Media Center Edition, AMD Athlon Dual Core 2.5 GHz, 1.75 GB RAM.

• Identifying Hard Drive as performance bottleneck for desktop machines

  I'm working in a development team where we all use laptops so we can work in multiple locations. These laptops are proving notoriously slow for development work, but at a glance they all look to have the specification for a much faster experience: CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 Memory - 2GB of RAM We all experience the biggest delays when the hard-drives are being accessed, particularly when swap-files are being thrashed. After doing a little bit of profile, a colleague discovered that our HDDs are seeing Read/Write speeds of about 10MB/sec. This seems abnormally low and we believe it the cause of the problem. Sensibly (though somewhat annoyingly) our business wont blow money on faster drives just to see if it fixes the problem; we need to illustrate this is definitely the problem and that buying some solid-state drives will make it go away. I need some way of showing how 90% of the system resources aren't being used over the course of a day, and that whenever there is utilization, it's all in HDD reads or writes. Are there any tools I could use to provide this information? Does it seem likely the problem is going to be fixed by a faster drive? Should I be looking for alternatives?

Server load is average 2 on a 4 core machine. IO utilization is 10-15% and doesn't have many jumps over 70%. Machine has almost 4 gb free and uses 0 swap. The site on the machine is a PHP site. All PHP code is optimized and fast mostly when it gets accessed, however sometimes requests get stuck. Stuck meaning; no response for at least 10 sec. We debugged the PHP code, but it is quite optimal and fast. We spend a lot of time on it until we decided to test the requesting of: <html><body>test</body></html> test.html page. This static resource also gets 'stuck' in the same manner the php pages get 'stuck'. How is the possible given the health of the system? I tested the network, but, when the PHP shows 'slowness' in the site monitoring, the html test files also take (far longer) than 10 sec to load using; time lynx -dump http://127.0.0.1/test.html We are kind of desperate to solve this problem, but we cannot seem to tackle it.

• Cisco Catalyst 4500 Policy Based Routing

  In order to test a new firewall I just set up I'm trying to implement policy based routing on our core switch. I want traffic from certain vlans to be routed to the new firewall while everything else continues being routed through the old firewall. I was trying to use this guide. Everything from that guide works fine except trying to run the "ip policy route-map" command in the interface configuration mode. IOS is telling me that such a command doesn't exist. A "show ip interface vlan" command says that policy routing is disabled. Any ideas? • Why Virtual Box won't give me option to create 64 bits guests?

  My host is x64 bits Windows 8.1. I downloaded the latest Virtual Box (4.3) and I'm trying to create a VM with a 64 bits Ubuntu OS (ubuntu-12.04.3-desktop-amd64). When I go to New VM wizard, it doesn't give me option to select "Ubuntu (x64)" as I have seen in other people's screenshots, only just "Ubuntu". As a result, the ISO can't boot. I tried in another PC and Virtual Box gives the x64 variants to most listed OS... Control Panel shows x64 OS, x64 processor. My host laptop is a Sony Vaio VPCZ22UGX/N, Intel® Core™ i7-2640M processor. CPUz shows Vx-t is available on my processor, of course. Here is what I tried so far: I enabled IO APIC as required in the docs. I have virtualization enabled in the BIOS. It works fine in VMware. Check that Hyper-V is not running or even installed on my Windows. Same for VMware. I also tried running the command: VBoxManage modifyvm [vmname] --longmode on for that VM, but no change.. I think the issue is really that I can't select x64 variant of the Ubuntu OS for that VM. Other people seem to indicate that's a requirement, but I don't get that option for some reason. I spent a lot of time and can't find what's wrong... Anyone knows what could be missing here? Thank you very much!! Eduardo

• Reasonable automatic HTML to PDF conversion (in UNIX/Linux environment)

  Is there a way to generate PDF documents from HTML files automatically in Linux where the PDF offers some kind of reasonable level of resemblance to the input file? A command-line tool - as opposed to an interactive GUI of some kind - is key. I have tried htmldoc and some related cousins, of course. But these tools are hopelessly stone-age; htmldoc doesn't support CSS at all. You won't find a lot of HTML documents these days that don't have at least some CSS styling. I don't really care about stupid effects or minor embellishments, but the issue is that CSS is at the core of most layouts these days; not many folks are using 6 layers of nested tables anymore. So, if the conversion tool has no grasp of CSS whatsoever, it's not just a matter of "the document doesn't look quite right"; it is likely to not meet the minimum standard of usability at all. It has been suggested to me by some folks to try to use the Gecko rendering engine to generate images that can be converted to PDFs, but I have no idea how one would go about doing this, let alone easily. I have no trouble believing that there are good commercial tools that do this, but I'm really looking for an open-source package if possible, as the endeavour itself is an open-source one and doesn't pay.
