• Current state of Erlang web development? Frameworks, Template languages

  Django is to Python as Rails is to Ruby. What is the current front-runner for Erlang? Recent Erlang web activity has resulted in many new frameworks but they are all still moving targets. ErlyWeb is very far along but now seems to be dead. If you were to invest significant capital into a new web product (i.e. not a hobby, you use your own money and you use other's investment in you with expectation of payback), would you choose Erlang as a web platform? If so, what framework and technologies would you choose?

• Grails - showing page processing/render debug information in development mode

  I've been experimenting with Grails for the past two days and, so far, I'm really happy with it. Coming from Rails, the only thing I've really been missing here is the dev-mode debug information shown after the page has been served. This is what I mean: Processing UsersController#show (for 127.0.0.1 at 2010-06-14 10:28:44) [GET] Parameters: {"id"=>"2"} User Load (0.0ms) SELECT * FROM "users" WHERE ("users"."id" = 2) Rendering template within layouts/users Rendering users/show Completed in 24ms (View: 5, DB: 0) | 200 OK [http://localhost/users/2] Is there any way to get something similar in Grails? I've tried the "debug" plugin but its not very useful as it only shows the total processing time. I know it's not hard too roll something of my own (except for that database stats part), I just wanted to make sure I wasn't unnecessarily reinventing the wheel.

  Goal: building a web application where a user can: Upload a document (doc, docx, pdf, additional office formats a +) View that document in a browser, preferably in html Download the document (in doc, pdf, additional open formats a +) Current solution: Ruby on Rails Application on Rackspace Users can upload doc and pdf files (AWS) Files can be downloaded in the format in which they were uploaded Thumbnail generation ([doc, pdf] - pdf - png) is done through AbiWord. Certain doc files do not convert well. Documents can be viewed in embedded Google docs viewer (https://docs.google.com/viewer). Certain doc files cannot be displayed. Little flexibility. Potential improvements: Document viewing in pdf through pdf.js Viewing in html (+ annotation) through Crocodoc I'd be glad to hear other users' experiences, and will add good recommendations to this list.

• ASP.NET MVC 2 Model object validation

  Hey guys, I'm trying to validate a model object outside of the context of ModelState within a controller, I currently have a parser that creates model objects from an excel file and I want to be able to report how many entries were added to the database and how many failed, is there a way to validate a model object on its data annotations outside of model binding? I'm looking for something similar to the rails model method of model.valid? or a way for me to implement that myself. My current solution is just manually checking if a few key fields are present but this duplicates requirements between my model class and its metadata, there has to be a better way to hook into the model validation checking that is done by mvc 2.   Hi, I have started learning Ruby for the past 2,3 weeks and I have come up with some findings on the language. Can someone please validate these points. Implemented in many other high level languages such as C, Java, .Net etc., Is slow for the obvious reason that it cannot beat any of the already known high level languages. Should never be compared with any other high level language. Not suitable for large applications. Completely open source and is in a budding state. Has a framework called Rails which claims that it would be good for Agile development Community out there is getting better day by day and finding help immediately should not be a problem as time goes by. Has significant changes between releases which many developers wont welcome right away. Running time cannot be comprehensively estimated since the language has several underlying implementation in several languages. Books are always outdated by the time when you finish them. Thanks.

• How would you write this Clojure snippet in Ruby and/or Haskell?

  I was working on a Rails template and was trying to write a bit of code that allows me to populate a table or multiple columns of ul tags "top-to-bottom" and "left-to-right" across however many columns I specify. I'm just getting the hang of Ruby so I couldn't figure this out. I'm also curious about an idiomatic Haskell version for this useful snippet.   I'm having problem loading a json resource from a local rails app with jQuery 1.4.4 The json is valid (based on jsonlint.com) and I can download it properly if I'm requesting it from other sources. • Syntax errors on Heroku, but not on local server

  I'm trying to deploy my first app on Heroku (rails 3). It works fine on my local server, but when I pushed it to Heroku and ran it, it crashes, giving a number of syntax errors. These are related to a collection of scopes I use like the one below: scope :scored, lambda { |score = nil| score.nil? ? {} : where('products.votes_count >= ?', score) } it produces errors of this form: "syntax error, unexpected '=', expecting '|' " "syntax error, unexpected '}', expecting kEND" Why is this syntax making Heroku choke and how can I correct it? • Go to file in Visual Studio

  I've recently started a new job working with webdevelopment in .NET. Coming from a php and rails background i've been working mainly in Eclipse and NetBeans, along with some TextMate. I find myself missing a few great keyboard shortcuts and i can't seem to find a Visual Studio equivalent. NetBeans has the awesome "Go To File" and so does Eclipse with this plugin. Eclipse also has the option of quick searching in the open file list with Cmd/Ctrl-E. Is there something like this in Visual Studio? Either build in or via plugin. Or is there some other way of quickly navigating between files that's prefered?

• Simple Sinatra Ajax Not Working

  I was trying make an AJAX call from a static file on my computer to a simple sinatra service. The ajax call was returning with an error and no details. The server logged no errors either. Another strange symptom was that the Origin in the request header was null. I turns out that you can't make cross domain ajax calls without a little extra effort. You can set the Access-Control-Allow-Origin header on your sinatra response to expose your service to external domains using a snippet like this: get '/hi' do response['Access-Control-Allow-Origin'] = '*' content_type 'text/plain' "Hello World" end There's also another header you can set to allow other HTTP Methods besides gets, Access-Control-Request-Method. You can find more information by searching around for CORS: Cross Origin Resource Sharing and the previously mentioned headers. Oh, and in case you want to do this in Rails as well you can do something like this in your controller: after_filter :set_access_control_headers def set_access_control_headers headers['Access-Control-Allow-Origin'] = '*' headers['Access-Control-Request-Method'] = '*' end

• Retain Site Background and Switch Pages?

  I was about to redo a Rails site today using AJAX so that the background could remain in place. Then I thought, "that would be exactly like using frames," and then I thought about SEO consequences and I dropped the idea entirely and took a look around the Web. It turns out that few sites -- except for Google itself, which has the link bar at the top -- are doing this. It doesn't look impossible to do, but it's not exactly easy. Aside from Ajaxing, you have to think about updating the query-string and having SEO-friendly links (that actually don't work, but rather make background requests via Javascript). Will any of the new technologies -- HTML5, perhaps -- solve this problem and allow us to have a Web with background colors (and other static elements) that do not disappear momentarily between page refreshes? On the other hand, why are few devs doing this with current technologies? Is it just not a big deal, too complicated to implement, or....?

How do I find all the links which are not already in anchor tag. s = %Q{ <a href='www.a.com'><b>www.a.com</b></a> www.b.com <div>www.c.com</div> } The output of above string should be www.b.com www.c.com I know "b" tag before www.a.com complicates the case but that's what I have to work with.

• How do you use the C language to produce a ruby gem?

  I would like to see some source code or maybe a link to some that gives at least a stub for writing ruby gems in the C languages (C++?? is that possible too?) Also, some of you may know that Facebook compiles some of their code natively as php extensions for better performance. Is anyone doing this in Rails? If so, what has been your experience with it?   I'm having trouble displaying my form at /users/2/friends/new. I'm receiving undefined method `friends_path' for #<#<Class:0x21f0c14>:0x21ef364> Here is the beginning of the form <% form_for(@friend) do |f| %> And the friends controller def new @user = User.find(params[:user_id]) @friend = @user.friends.build end This is the route resources :users do resources :friends end And the relevant path from "rake routes" users/:user_id/friends/new(.:format) {:controller=>"friends", :action=>"new"} Any help or insight is greatly appreciated.   I've been researching programming languages, in hopes of learning to program. Since I've heard a lot of good things about Ruby, I went ahead and purchased The Pragmatic guide to Ruby. I understand that there is a lot of hype about Ruby on Rails. Because ruby lets you program scripts, applications, and internet helped me to decide on learning Ruby vs other languages. Today I watched a talk about google go, and it's really caught my attention. Coincidently I stumbled on a talk about jruby. I've been under the impression that java applications are bloated an slow. However the speaker made a point of what is wrong with Ruby, and how Jruby diagnosed Ruby's shortcomings. All that said. I would like to hear peoples opinions on Jruby vs Ruby, and if Ruby is working on fixing these "short comings". Also, how do you, the programming community feel about "go" and if I'm making a mistake learning Ruby instead of go, or Jruby. Appreciate your advice and opinions Thanks,

• Debug Mode for CodeIgniter?

  Does CodeIgniter provide a Debug Mode, for example, when accessing an Invalid URL? Ruby on Rails does show debugging Messages when a incorrect URL has been given, and the controller is unable to resolve it using the routes map. How would I enable such debugging messages in CodeIgniter? The profiler ... $this->output->enable_profiler(TRUE); ... only affects single classes, but not all routes. So debugging without an actual debugger mode is a little... difficult. :-)

• Perform Unit Conversions with the Windows 7 Calculator

  Want to easily convert area, volume, temperature, and many other units?  With the Calculator in Windows 7, it’s easy to convert most any unit into another. The New Calculator in Windows 7 Calculator received a visual overhaul in Windows 7, but at first glance it doesn’t seem to have any new functionality.  Here’s Windows 7’s Calculator on the left, with Vista’s calculator on the right.   But, looks can be deceiving.  Window’s 7’s calculator has lots of new exciting features.  Let’s try them out.  Simply type Calculator in the start menu search. To uncover the new features, click the View menu.  Here you can select many different modes, including Unit Conversion mode which we will look at. When you select the Unit Conversion mode, the Calculator will expand with a form on the left side. This conversions pane has 3 drop-down menus.  From the top one, select the type of unit you want to convert. In the next two menus, select which values you wish to convert to and from.  For instance, here we selected Temperature in the first menu, Degrees Fahrenheit in the second menu, and Degrees Celsius in the third menu. Enter the value you wish to convert in the From box, and the conversion will automatically appear in the bottom box. The Calculator contains dozens of conversion values, including more uncommon ones.  So if you’ve ever wanted to know how many US gallons are in a UK gallon, or how many knots a supersonic jet travels in an hour, this is a great tool for you!   Conclusion Windows 7 is filled with little changes that give you an all-around better experience in Windows to help you work more efficiently and productively.  With the new features in the Calculator, you just might feel a little smarter, too! • How Can I Test My Computer’s Power Supply?

  You’re concerned your computer troubles stem from a failing (or outright fried) power supply unit. How can you test the unit to be sure that it’s the source of your hardware headaches? Today’s Question & Answer session comes to us courtesy of SuperUser—a subdivision of Stack Exchange, a community-driven grouping of Q&A web sites. The Question SuperUser reader Sam Hoice has some PSU concerns: My computer powered off the other day on its own, and now when I push the power button, nothing happens. My assumption would naturally be that the power supply is done (possibly well done) but is there any good way to test this before I buy a new one? How can Sam test things without damaging his current computer or other hardware?   The Answer SuperUser contributor Grant writes: Unplug the power supply from any of the components inside the computer (or just remove it from the computer completely). USE CAUTION HERE (Though you’d only be shocked with a max of 24 volts) Plug the power supply into the wall. Find the big 24-ish pin connector that connects to the motherboard. Connect the GREEN wire with the adjacent BLACK wire. The power supply’s fan should start up. If it doesn’t then it’s dead. If the fan starts up, then it could be the motherboard that’s dead. You can use a multimeter to check if there is power output from the power supply. Adrien offers a solution for readers who may not be comfortable jamming wires into their power supply unit’s MOBO connector: Most well-stocked geek-stores sell a “power-supply tester” that has all the appropriate connectors to plug each part of your PSU into, with spiffy LEDs indicating status of the various rails, connectors for IDE/SATA/floppy power cables, etc. They run ~$20 US. • Inflector for .NET

  I was writing conventions for FluentNHibernate the other day and I ran into the need to pluralize a given string and immediately thought of the ruby on rails Inflector.  It turns out there is a .NET library out there also capable of doing word inflection, originally written (I believe) by Andrew Peters, though the link I had no longer works.  The entire Inflector class is only a little over 200 lines long and can be easily included into any project, and contains the Pluralize() method along with a few other helpful methods (like Singularize(), Camelize(), Capitalize(), etc). The Inflector class is available in its entirety from my github repository https://github.com/srkirkland/Inflector.  In addition to the Inflector.cs class I added tests for every single method available so you can gain an understanding of what each method does.  Also, if you are wondering about a specific test case feel free to fork my project and add your own test cases to ensure Inflector does what you expect. • Getting Started With Sinatra

  Sinatra is a Ruby DSL for building web applications. It is distinguished from its peers by its minimalism. Here is hello world in Sinatra: require 'rubygems' require 'sinatra' get '/hi' do "Hello World!" end A haml view is rendered by: def '/' haml :name_of_your_view end Haml is also new to me. It is a ruby-based view engine that uses significant white space to avoid having to close tags. A hello world web page in haml might look like: %html %head %title Hello World %body %div Hello World You see how the structure is communicated using indentation instead of opening and closing tags. It makes views more concise and easier to read. Based on my syntax highlighter for Gherkin I have started to build a sinatra web application that publishes syntax highlighted gherkin feature files. I have found that there is a need to have features online so that customers can access them, and so that they can be linked to project management tools like Jira, Mingle, trac etc. The first thing I want my application to be able to do is display a list of the features that it knows about. This will happen when a user requests the root of the application. Here is my sinatra handler: get '/' do feature_service = Finding::FeatureService.new(Finding::FeatureFileFinder.new, Finding::FeatureReader.new) @features = feature_service.features(settings.feature_path, settings.feature_extensions) haml :index end The handler and the view are in the same scope so the @features variable will be available in the view. This is the same way that rails passes data between actions and views. The view to render the result is: %h2 Features %ul - @features.each do |feature| %li %a{:href => "/feature/#{feature.name}"}= feature.name Clearly this is not a complete web page. I am using a layout to provide the basic html page structure. This view renders an <li> for each feature, with a link to /feature/#{feature.name}. Here is what the page looks like: When the user clicks on one of the links I want to display the contents of that feature file. • Cloud Application Management for Platforms

  Today Oracle, along with CloudBees, Cloudsoft, Huawei, Rackspace, Red Hat, and Software AG, published the Cloud Application Management for Platforms (CAMP) specification. This spec deals with application management in the context of PaaS. It defines a model (consisting of a set resources and their relationships), a REST-based API for manipulating that model, and a packaging format for getting applications (and their attendant metadata) into and out of the platform. My colleague, Mark Carlson, has already provided an excellent writeup on the spec here. The following, additional points bear emphasizing: CAMP is language, framework and platform neutral; it should be equally applicable to the task of deploying and managing Ruby on Rails applications as Java/Spring applications (as Node.js applications, etc.) CAMP only covers the interactions between a Cloud Consumer and a Cloud Provider (using the definitions of these terms provided in the NIST Cloud Computing Reference Architecture). The internal APIs used by the Cloud Provider to, for example, deploy additional platform services (e.g. a new message queuing service) are out of CAMP's scope. CAMP supports the management of the entire lifecycle of the application (e.g. start/stop, suspend/resume, etc.) not just the deployment of the components that make up the application. Complexity is the antithesis of interoperability. One of CAMP's goals is to be as broadly interoperable as possible. To this end, the authors of CAMP tried to "make things as simple as possible, but no simpler". For example, JSON is the only serialization format used in the spec (although Providers can extend this to support additional serialization formats such as XML). It remains to be seen whether we can preserve this simplicity as the spec is processed by OASIS. So far, those who have indicated an interest in collaborating on the spec seem to be of a like mind with regards to the need for simplicity. The flip side to simplicity is the knowledge that you undoubtedly missed something that is important to someone. To make up for this, CAMP is designed to be extensible. The idea is to ship what we know will work, allow implementers to extend the spec, then re-factor the spec to incorporate the most popular extensions. Anyone interested in this effort, particularly those of you using PaaS-level services, is encouraged to join the forthcoming OASIS TC. As you may have noticed, CAMP is a bit of a departure from some of the more monolithic management standards that have preceded it. The idea is to develop simple, discrete standards targeted to address specific interoperability and portability problems and tie these standards together with common patterns based on REST and HATEOAS. I'm excited to see how this idea plays out.

• Eclipse Crashes on Ubuntu 11.10

  I'm using Eclipse Indigo with aptana, to develope a rails application and it was working fine, but now it keeps crashing on startup. It opens and when the loading bars appear on the status bar, it goes gray (not responding) and the in closes without an error.
