• Should member variables of global objects be made global as well?

  I'm developing plugins in Eclipse which mandates the use of singleton pattern for the Plugin class in order to access the runtime plugin. The class holds references to objects such as Configuration and Resources. In Eclipse 3.0 plug-in runtime objects are not globally managed and so are not generically accessible. Rather, each plug-in is free to declare API which exposes the plug-in runtime object (e.g., MyPlugin.getInstance() In order for the other components of my system to access these objects, I have to do the following: MyPlugin.getInstance().getConfig().getValue(MyPlugin.CONFIGKEY_SOMEPARAMETER); , which is overly verbose IMO. Since MyPlugin provides global access, wouldn't it be easier for me to just provide global access to the objects it manages as well? MyConfig.getValue(MyPlugin.CONFIGKEY_SOMEPARAMETER); Any thoughts? (I'm actually asking because I was reading about the whole "Global variable access and singletons are evil" debates)

• Language neutral plugin architectures

  I am looking at extending an existing application through the use of a plugin architecture. The application id written in Delphi, but I want to be able to implement various plugins in whatever language is best of the job. Currently we have skills in Delphi, C# and Java, and would like to be able to implement a plugin in whatever language is required. Does anyone know of an example system that can be used to implement this ? I am assuming that I could standardise on a particular COM interface and anything that implements that interface could be a plugin. Does anyone have any pointers ? Thanks

• minifying patched javascript files

  I'm writing a Rails app and I've partially integrated in this nice little patch to the in line ajax editor: http://inplacericheditor.box.re/ The problem is, on that page I have tinymce, prototype and scriptaculous included. In Firefox at least there's a big lag when all this stuff is loading. I was hoping to fix it by compressing the files so I checked out a plugin for rails called Smurf. It seemed to do what it was supposed to do nicely, but it choked on the little patch files that are included with the Ajax editor thing. THe patch files look like this: Object.extend(Ajax.InPlaceEditor.prototype, { handleAJAXFailure: function(transport) Alternatively, should I just be catching them instead of worrying about minfying them? I know I'm running on development and that Apache would maybe be handling serving the js files differently..It just seems like a lot of things to serve on one page.

  I'm using my MOO project to teach myself Test Driven Design, and it's taking me interesting places. For example, I wrote a test that said an attribute on a particular object should always return an array, so -- t = Thing.new("test") p t.names #-> ["test"] t.names = nil p t.names #-> [] The code I have for this is okay, but it doesn't seem terribly ruby to me: class Thing def initialize(names) self.names = names end def names=(n) n = [] if n.nil? n = [n] unless n.instance_of?(Array) @names = n end attr_reader :names end Is there a more elegant, Ruby-ish way of doing this? (NB: if anyone wants to tell me why this is a dumb test to write, that would be interesting too...)

• wordpress plugin for certain tweets

  Hello I would need to get tweets from my twitter account on my wordpress site. Okey, the basics i could do, but there is one special need. I would need to get only certain tweets. Tweets that have some #hashstag for example only tweets with hashtag #myss would show up on my wordpress site. Is there ready made plugin for this? I have been googlein for hours but have found only basic/normal twitter plugins. Also i would need to able style the feed to look same as my current site. Cheers!

• DB fields not showing up in association custom queries?

  I have a notification list that the user can select different show options for different kinds of notifications along with how many results are returned. I'm keeping them in the user model because I want the custom sort to stay with the user between sessions. Here is the association in my user model: has_many :notifications, :class_name => "Notification", :foreign_key => "user_id", :conditions => ["won = ? and lost = ? and paid = ?", self.prefs_won, self.prefs_lost, self.prefs_paid], :limit => self.prefs_results.to_s But when I use the above code, Rails throws me an "unknown method" error for self.prefs_won. It is definitely a field in my database and set as a boolean value, but Rails can't find it... what's the problem?

• Call inner function of jQuery-Plugin-function?

  Hello Everyone, I've written an jQuery-Plugin, which I want to use as Object. So I declared some functions within the plugin, which I want to call from any other location, just like an object with methods. Is that even possible? To keep it simple: (function( $ ){ $.fn.myPlugin = function(){ // Here I want methods... function foo() { // do something... } } })(jQuery); Then I want to call the inner function from outside the plugin like: $.myPlugin.foo(); But that doesn't seem to work. So is it even possible? Or are there any other solutions? I don't want to use an normal unrelated jQuery-Class for this purpose. Because this plugin should work together with some other jQuery-Plugins. Thank you

• How to version SQL Server schema using VS 2005?

  I am new to C# programming and am coming to it most recently from working with Ruby on Rails. In RoR, I am used to being able to write schema migrations for the database. I would like to be able to do something similar for my C#/SQLServer projects. Does such a tool exist for the VS 2005 toolset? Would it be wise to use RoR migrations with SQL Server directly outside of VS 2005? In other words, I would handle all schema versioning using ActiveRecord:Migration from Rails but nothing else. If I do handle migrations outside of C# and VS 2005 with another tool, is RoR ActiveRecord:Migration the best thing to use or is there something which is a better fit?

• No route matches - after login attempt - even though the route exists?

  I am working on a rails application and added a simple login system according to a book. I created the controller admin: rails generate controller admin login logout index It added the following routes to routes.db get "admin/login" get "admin/logout" get "admin/index" I can got to http://localhost:3000/admin/login there is no problem at all. But when I try to login I get: No route matches "/admin/login"! Now, the first confusing part is that the "login" method of my AdminController is not executed at all. The second confusing part is that this code works like a charm - redirects everything to /admin/login: def authorize unless User.find_by_id(session[:user_id]) flash[:notice] = "you need to login" redirect_to :controller => 'admin', :action => 'login' end end Sidenotes: I restarted the server several times. I tried a different browser - to be sure there is no caching problem.

  I am using Rails 2.3.5. Class User < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :phones end class Phone < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :frequency_bands end I want to get all the frequency_bands for a user. I know I can write a method def freq_bands for User but I would like to know if it is possible to have has_many freq_bands for a User. In this way I can chain the call.   I am new to developing sites and just started using wordpress. I was told that I could use fancybox to help create a popup that would allow a person to select a country. Something similar to below, the only problem is I have no clue how to do this, I installed a fancybox plugin in (http://wordpress.org/plugins/fancybox-for-wordpress/). The way the person did it was you click on an image and then this text country pops up. How do I implement this to pop up a country select after you click on an image? Thanks!

If I take out the Module.new code and if I only leave class_eval in that case also I will have a method called foo in self. What am I missing.

• Possible to register Selenium RC's with the Hudson Selenium Grid Hub w/o the RC's being slaves in th

  I am trying to get Hudson to run my ruby based selenium tests. I have installed the Selenium Grid plugin, but I don't want to have the RC's running as slaves in a Hudson cluster. The reason for this is I don't want to waste the next six years of my life trying to configure each of my projects in various Windows environments. Hudson currently pulls each project from Github and builds it just fine. With a regular Selenium Grid setup, I am able to edit the grid_configuration.yml file to represent the various environments I wish to tests against, then pass environment variables to the rake task that runs the test i.e. which browser/platfom to run on and the URL of the application under test -- usually a port on the hub machine running in a specific environment. In this way, the machines on which the RC's run don't need to know anything about the source code of my apps, they just need to have selenium-grid installed and have registered with the hub. Is there a way of elegantly emulating this with Hudson?

  I am currently using a site5 server and would like rake jobs:work pretty much running all the time. I currently cannot send out the jobs unless i'm logged into the server. I hope that someone out there can help me with this. Had alot of trouble with ar_mailer and the whenever gem ... but have about another 5 gems working perfectly within my rails app. can someone shed some light on a solution for this please? greatly appreciated.   I'm using the Refinery content management system with a the Portfolio plugin see http://github.com/resolve/refinerycms I wanted to create a title and description for images uploaded to Refinery using Refinerycms-Portfolio so far I have done the following; added the columns to the images table $script/generate migration AddTitleToImages title:string $script/generate migration AddBodyToImages body:text $rake db:migrate modified the field div in this file, * highlighted vendor/plugins/images/app/views/admin/images/_form.html.erb Use current image or, replace it with this one... ***** ***** ***** ***** "wymeditor", :rows = 7 % Added these lines to the main image partial in vendor/plugins/refinerycms-portolio/app/views/portfolio/ _main_image.html.erb <%= @image.body % This works in the back-end except for a few visual bugs. The problem with this is when i click through the thumbnails in the front-end the titles and descriptions keep stacking on top of the previous titles and descriptions. The main image changes fine, but instead of refreshing the title and description, it adds the new one above the previous titles and descriptions. How can i stop this repetition so that only one title and description will show at a time? I'm new to Rails and I am using Rails-2.3.5 and I suspect this can be solved using Java Script thanks in advance, John

• Red Box is not working

  Hi , I have install the Red box plugin by using the following command script/plugin install svn://rubyforge.org/var/svn/ambroseplugins/redbox . It installed successfully. and again ran the following command the following location /myapp/vendor/plugin/redbox/rake update_scripts . It shows me the following output (in /myapp/vendor/plugins/redbox) rake aborted! private method `copy' called for File:Class /home/myapp/vendor/plugins/redbox/Rakefile:28 (See full trace by running task with --trace) I don't know How to solve this ... Then i understand that "rake update_scripts" copying the Js and Css file only. so i manually copied the Redbox.js & redbox.css files into the respective places under /public folder I include the follwoing into my application.html.erb <%= stylesheet_link_tag 'redbox' % <%= javascript_include_tag :defaults % <%= javascript_include_tag 'redbox' % It included in the page successfully. The following is my view code : <%= link_to_remote_redbox('Red_box', :url = {:action= 'log'} ,:method ='get') % The popup box doesn't appear. I have no clue what is the exact error. Is that any Jquery clash? Please help me

  I am referring specifically to the jQuery Autocomplete v1.1 plugin by Jörn Zaefferer [source: http://bassistance.de/jquery-plugins/jquery-plugin-autocomplete/] as there seems to be quite a few variations of this plugin. I'm trying to pass additional parameters to the server when the user starts typing because I have multiple fields that I want autocomplete to provide suggestions for. In addition to the query, I want to send the input name attribute to the server but I can't seem to use $(this).attr('name') within the extraParams.   Are there any Event Driven Architecture jQuery plugins? Step 1: Subscribing The subscribers subscribe to the event handler in the middle, and pass in a callback method, as well as the name of the event they are listening for... i.e. The two green subscribers will be listening for p0 events. And the blue subscriber will be listening for p1 events. Step 2: The p0 event is fired by another component to the Event Handler A p0 event is fired to the Event Handler The event handler notifies it's subscribers of the event, calling the callback methods they specified when they subscribed in Step 1: Subscribing. Note that the blue subscriber is not notified because it was not listening for p0 events. Step 3: The p1 event is fired a component to the Event Handler The p1 event is fired by another component Just as before except that now the blue subscriber receives the event through its callback and the other two green subscribers do not receive the event. Images by leeand00, on Flickr I can't seem to find one, but my guess is that they just call it something else in Javascript/jquery Also is there a name for this pattern? Because it isn't just a basic publisher/subscriber, it has to be called something else I would think.

• Slimbox 2 Plugin, jQuery Flickr, and IE8

  Hello, I am currently developing a site that I make use of two jQuery plugins: Flickr jquery plugin (http://code.google.com/p/jquery-flickr/) Slimbox (http://code.google.com/p/slimbox/) The first plugin is used to pull in flickr photos from a specific account. These photos are displayed as thumbnails on the page. I am then using the second plugin to display larger views of these images. Because the flickr photos are fetched when the page loads, I am calling the Slimbox 2 function like this: $(document).ready(function() { $("#Flickr").flickr(); //Call Flickr plugin $(window).bind('load', function() { $("#Flickr a").slimbox();//Call Slimbox2 }); }); On first testing this seemed to have worked perfectly. I tested multiple versions of FireFox, IE7, IE6, and Safari. Everything is great. However, the Slimbox lightbox effest does not work in IE8. However, if I put IE8 into compatibility mode, everything works as expected. I would like to avoid forcing compatibility mode. There are no javascript errors and I am at a loss for testing. • Create custom rewrite rule for my WordPress plugin

  I'm writing a plug-in for WordPress which in fact will be a separate ordering module (it will be placed in an IFRAME on the site I'm developing as well as others) but with its admin tied into WordPress. I wrote the administration part without too much hassle, however I'm having trouble with the front-end. First of all I'd like my script to be accessible via www.mysite.com/order/ and, as per the WordPress codex, I found I need to place the following code into my main plugin file: add_action('init', 'ta_flush_rewrite_rules'); function ta_flush_rewrite_rules() { global $wp_rewrite; $wp_rewrite->flush_rules(); } add_action('generate_rewrite_rules', 'ta_add_rewrite_rules'); function ta_add_rewrite_rules( $wp_rewrite ) { $new_rules = array("order/(.+)" => "/wp-content/plugins/my-plugin/order.php"); $wp_rewrite->rules = $new_rules + $wp_rewrite->rules; } But it doesn't work and I don't really want to get dirty with .htaccess hacking. Furthermore even if this would work, the order.php file is a separate file from my plugin. This means that I'll have to include some WordPress files in order to have access to the database and other helper classes and functions. That brings us to question number 2: is there a way for the URL to call a function of my plugin to render the order page?
