• Cancel UITouch Events When View Covered By Modal UIViewController

  Hi there, I am writing an application where the user has to move some stuff on the screen using his fingers and drop them. To do this, I am using the touchesBegan,touchesEnded... function of each view that has to be moved. The problem is that sometimes the views are covered by a view displayed using the [UIViewController presentModalViewController] function. As soon as that happens, the UIView that I was moving stops receiving the touch events, since it was covered up. But there is no event telling me that it stopped receiving the events, so I can reset the state of the moved view. The following is an example that demonstrates this. The functions are part of a UIView that is being shown in the main window. It listens to touch events and when I drag the finger for some distance, it presents a modal view that covers everything. • ViewState content when there are no controls on the page

  When you create an ASP.NET page with no controls and runs it, a view state hidden field is added. Looking at what's in it (with ViewStateDecorder) reveals that there's a single value there that contains a number. My question is - what is this number? P.S. I guess this value appears on every page, with or without controls.

• Installing PHP 5.3 on a Windows host with both Apache and IIS

  I'm currently experimenting with a couple of configurations of Apache and IIS on the same server box - so far using Apache as a proxy for IIS is winning, but another of my setups has Apache on a non-standard port with IIS taking the majority of traffic. Both of these machines currently have PHP 5.2 installed. I want to upgrade to PHP 5.3, but the installer asks which server I'm running - I'm running both - so what do I tell it? Which configuration will be the most flexible, tell it we're running IIS, or tell it we're running Apache?

• Can't interact with children of an itemRenderer in Flex 4 Gumbo

  I thought this would be pretty easy but I'm running into all sorts of problems with this. I have an ItemRenderer with a an image and two labels. I want to assign separate mouse events to the image and two labels. It seems like the item renderer is treated like a single interactive piece and I haven't found a way to override that. I couldn't even disable the default rollover effect so I had to style the rollOverColor to match my background. • What are the implications of expanding an internal subnet mask?

  Our network is currently working on a 192.168.0.x subnet, all controlled through DHCP, except for the few main servers who have hard-configured IP address settings. What would I kill if I changed the DHCP-published subnet mask from 255.255.255.0 to 255.255.0.0? The reason for doing this is not because we have a huge sudden influx of machines, but because I'd like to start partitioning specific devices into specific IP ranges (to be neat and tidy). For what its worth, I don' plan on changing the allocated DHCP address range, but rather want to move some of the reserved and excluded DHCP addresses out of the address pool. e.g. printers will be 192.168.2.x I will obviously need to change the subnet mask manually on my manually configured devices.

• Proper umask on linux webservers?

  Most VPS have a team of 1+ user(s) that don't do anything but configure the system and work on the web site and/or database. I would assume all the team members would be a group like "developers" so they could all work on files in the web root as needed. With this in mind, would umask 007 be a much better setting than the default of 022? After all, there shouldn't be any "other/world" users since this machines primary purpose is to serve web pages. All the developers have access and there aren't any "guests" logging in...

• java.rmi.UnmarshalException: unable to pull client classes by server

  Hi, I have an RMI client/server set-up on two machines that works fine in a simple situation when the server doesn't require a client-side defned class. However, when I need to use a class defined on the client side I am unable to have the server unmarshall those classes. I suspect this is an issue with my java.rmi.server.codebase property that I pass in as argument to the client app. I followed Sun's RMI Tutorial trail and I think I have followed the steps exactly except that I don't specify a classpath argument when executing client and server because they execute in the directory right above the root package directory (however I tried that too with no effect). Other notes: 1 my server and client policy files correctly specify the path, as I've tested this setup with good and bad paths, and getting a security exception for bad path 2 this setup works if I don't use client-side defined objects, the client connects correctly to the server and the server executes. 3 when I place the client-side class on the server in the server's classpath, all executes fine. • portable cross-platform WebDAV Client

  I am looking for a portable application that will allow me to do this: Browse a WebDAV share and open a file. Edit the file locally. Save the file, and automatically propagate the change to WebDAV. Is there any CROSS-PLATFORM application out there that will let me do this and exists as a portable? The reason I need this functionality is that I regularily have to access files via WebDAV from public machines where I do not have the neccessary permissions to natively mount a webdav share, or to install the neccessary components.

• BES Express - configure MDS to push messages from 3rd party web application

  Hi! I have developed IIS web service to send PAP messages using Blackberry Push API over MDS. And there is an application installed on device, configured to receive push messages on appropriate port. Everything works well on MDS simulator. But it's not working well in real environment: I have installed BES Express and register several devices. I can browse MDS url with appropriate port, so url is correct. Also port enabled for reliable pushes is used in push message and in device application. • While in CMD shell, copying files from host OS to guest VM locks files (VMware Player/Workstation)

  We're running the latest versions of VMWare Player and Workstation for Windows. The following behavior is identical across both products. Problem: We open a CMD prompt in our guest OS (XP, Vista, Windows 7) and copy files from our host OS using the standard CMD shell copy command: copy z:\C$\testfiles The copy completes successfully, but from that point forward, all the files that were copied to our guest OS are now LOCKED on our host OS. This does not happen if we use Windows Explorer to copy files - it only happens when files are copied via the CMD shell. As mentioned at the start of this question, this behavior is reproducible in both VMWare Player and VMWare Workstation across multiple machines and multiple guest OS's. I've googled for a workaround, but without success. Any ideas appreciated. Malcolm

  I am using ssh as a SOCKS server by running this command on the server: ssh -f2qTnND *:1080 root@localhost There is one problem: anybody can connect to the server and use it's internet connection. Options: To use iptables to filter access to the server, but I connect to the server from various non-statically allocated IP addresses so I would have to edit very frequently those filters which can be annoying. To install a SOCKS server on the remote. Ultimately this is the last option if there is no other simpler way to do it. (I am very lazy) Launching the same command on clients machines. The problem here is that some clients don't run on Linux and it is awkward to set up the tunnel (Windows + Putty). Is there a way to add authentication to a SOCKS server made using ssh? Bonus question: How to add encryption between the client and the server (made using ssh)?

  Some days ago I installed an Ubuntu server and two running virtual machines with libvirt. Everything works fine except one performance problem. Everytime when I call a PHP script with directory operations the operations are very slow and not performant.   I was using a script to perform rsync in sudo crontab. The script does a 2-way rsync (from serverA to serverB and reverse). the rsync uses ssh to connect between servers. After i reboot both the server machines, the rsync is not working in sudo crontab. I also setup a new cronjob and it fails, The error is: rsync error: unexplained error (code 255) at io.c(600) [sender=3.0.6] rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (0 bytes received so far) [receiver] However, when run from terminal, the rync script works as expected without issues. please help. looks like issue with ssh. however, i am able to ssh into either servers withoiut issues.

• Incredibly high latency for Ubuntu guest on Hyper-V

  I've got several Ubuntu 10.04 virtual machines running as Hyper-V guests on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 and they're all perfectly fine. Today I installed my first Ubuntu 11.10 virtual machine and I'm seeing rediculous pings: These servers are all connected via gigabit to a local LAN, with almost no network traffic at all1, with a legacy network adapter in Hyper-V. I'm a bit of an Ubuntu n00b so I don't really know where to go from here. Any ideas? free -m reports: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 485 470 15 0 63 299 -/+ buffers/cache: 107 378 Swap: 507 20 487 This is within a few mb of our other Ubuntu servers that are on 10.04. I removed the Legacy NIC and installed a Synthetic one in Hyper-V and this did improve the numbers, in that they're around 10-30ms now, but I would still be expecting <1ms response times. 1As a comparison, I have another Ubuntu 10.04 guest on Hyper-V almost 1,000km away that has a ping of 33ms

• linux ssh -X graphical applications will not start when system load is high

  So I am using ssh -X to access a server. I am at a Xubuntu desktop accessing a Ubuntu server that is in the next room. Usually everything works fine, but when the system load gets high, any graphical applications I have freeze and fail to be restarted. This happens even if the process that is causing the high load has been niced to a low priority with "nice -n 19". And even though the system load is high, the command line works fine with no delay, and other applications I have running on the server (e.g. virtual machines) run fine. But any graphical application running through X dies. When the graphical applications fail they usually give out an error message that suggests a time-out. It seems that something connected to X has a low priority and times out. But what is it, and how does one fix it?

  Hello all, I have a NIS master-slave setup and I would like to improve the password rules/complexity for it. Seems like if I introduce new rules to the NIS Master they are applicable only from there. What I mean: I want minimal password length of 9 characters. On the NIS master if I run 'passwd' it obeys this requirement. If I run 'yppasswd' it just go to the default 6 characters. If I use 'chage -d 0 user1' to force a user to change a password, the user is prompted only when login on the NIS Master. The user's old password is still good to login at NIS clients. All machines are running Ubuntu 9.10 or 10.04. How I can strengthen yppasswd rules and make it warn users to change their passwords? Thank you all!

• MacBook can't use internet, but nslookup and ping both work

  I have a user with a new high-end MacBook Pro that can't use the internet. He can connect to either our wired or wireless network and do things like browse file shares, but can get no further. When I brought the machine in for testing, I found that I could do an nslookup just fine, and I'm able to ping addresses returned by nslookup just fine. I'm even able to bring up web pages by entering the IP address into the address bar directly. However, when I try to ping the domain name rather than the IP address, it just sits there. So apparently I can either do name resolution or communicate with an address, but not both at the same time. Again, these symptoms occur on both the wired and wireless network. Other machines on our network, including a few other Macs, don't have this issue. Any ideas?

• Windows activation on a Virtual Machine (Physical->VM)

  I backed up a number of laptops to virtual machines before they are to be re-purposed, in case I need the data at some later time. While the Physical to VM processes worked fine I am encountering issues on some of the VMs. When I boot them I get an error message saying I MUST activate windows in order to login. This is expected because the hardware changed (from physical hardware to virtualized hardware). I click the OK button and expect to be prompted with ways to activate, windows sits there for quite a while then tells me that "Windows has already been activated". I click OK at that message and get take back to the beginning where I am asked to activate Windows. I have done some fairly intensive googling but haven't been able to find a real solution. EDIT: The laptops with the issues are 2 Sony Vaios, I believe that they have the OEM version of the OS originally installed by the factory.

  I'm starting to have quite the collection of Ubuntu VMs that I must manage. I'm starting to investigate Puppet for managing the configuration of all of them, and apticron to let me know what's out of date. But the issue I feel I should deal with sooner than later is log aggregation. I'd like to stay in the free/open source realm for now, seeing that we don't have much budget for something like splunk yet. In addition to syslog, I would like to collect application specific logs (We are running different apps on different machines, from nginx+passenger for rails, to Apache+Tomcat for java, to PHP for expression engine, and mysql/postgresql database server), so that we can analyze the relavent data. For now, I'm just looking to get all the logs one place.

• How to enable connection security for WMI firewall rules when using VAMT 2.0?

  I want to use VAMT 2.0 to install product keys and active software in remote machines. Everything works fine as long as the ASync-In, DCOM-In, and WMI-In Windows Firewall rules are enabled and the action is set to Allow the connection. However, when I try using Allow the connection if it is secure (regardless of the connection security option chosen) VAMT won't connect to the remote machine. I tried using wbemtest and the error always is “The RPC server is unavailable”, error code 0x800706ba. How do I setup at least some level of connection security for remote WMI access for VAMT to work? I googled for correct VAMT setup, read the Volume Activation 2.0 Step-by-Step guide, but no luck finding anything about connection security.

• Burn DVD mastered format DVD+R

  Using windows Vista, can I write DVD+R discs using mastered format? I've followed the instructions here But when I get to step 6, it gives an error "There was an error burning this disc. The disc might no longer be usable" There are no dollar signs in my files or extensions, and I have plenty of free space on my HD. I can successfully make a data disc using "live" format. Unfortunately my colleges home (XP) PC is unable to read it, despite the fact that it works on other XP machines at work... so I thought I'd try making a mastered one for greater compatibility. Any ideas?

• PPTPD with PAM authentication?

  I need a VPN solution for my company. One requirement is to be able to use the built-in windows VPN client. We are running a Debian Etch server. I've managed to set up PPTPD but the authentication is based on the chap-secrets file. We already have all the user accounts set up on the server, so it'd be nice to use PAM authentication to get user/pass directly from the unix login. Is this possible to achieve and how? If not, is there any other VPN solution that can do this? Don't tell me OpenVPN, it needs additional software to be installed on the Windows machines. :)
