• alsa - sound issues on ubuntu 12.04

  i am having an sony E series laptop.i have an HDMI port .at this stage ,i have tested my sound card , which provides audio out on my laptop i.e i could hear songs .my laptop has two sound cards amd 5450 and an intel-hda(alsamixer shows that as s/pdif) . i decided to connect HDMI output to my new HD-TV.but, i could get only visuals on my TV,NO AUDIO OUTPUT ( HDMI cable works fine with win 7).my laptop has two sound cards.but i couldn't switch output to other card.( i don't know ,how to do that) i decided to update alsa. complied the following code in terminal. sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev/alsa-daily sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install alsa-hda-dkms then,strangely no login sound, and no audio output on my laptop at all .then, started complied code from step1 sound troubleshooting procedure from offical ubuntu site.then, my speaker icon taskbar disappeared .obivously $aplay -l ,provided output as no soundcards detected . so , i implemented step 4 from that guide, it provides a output of all hardware devices in my laptop. *-multimedia UNCLAIMED description: Audio device product: Cedar HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 5400/6300 Series] vendor: Hynix Semiconductor (Hyundai Electronics) physical id: 0.1 bus info: pci@0000:01:00.1 version: 00 width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm pciexpress msi bus_master cap_list configuration: latency=0 resources: memory:f0040000-f0043fff *-multimedia UNCLAIMED description: Audio device product: 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio vendor: Intel Corporation physical id: 1b bus info: pci@0000:00:1b.0 version: 05 width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list configuration: latency=0 resources: memory:f5e00000-f5e03fff that command displayed output name of the two cards . but , still i have no positive output on $aplay -l. so therfore, i think alsa couldn't detect my sound cards . is there solution to this problem? it could be better,if alsa would channel output from multiple sound cards ? how should install and configure alsa such that detects HDMI cable as soon i connect to my HD tv? is it possible to alsa and pluseaudio 2.0 to co-exist, if so how?

• Why isn't my other two constant buffers being updated to the shader?

  I posted previously before about my two dynamic buffers not being dynamically updating the constant shader. The tessellation buffer isn't working because I have to manually update the tessellation factor inside the hull shader. I believe the camera position isn't updating either because when I perform distance adaptation the far edges are more tessellated then the what's truly in front of the camera. I have all the buffers set to dynamic. Inside the render loop I have them set as: ID3D11Buffer *multiBuffers[3]; devcon->VSSetConstantBuffers(0,3,multiBuffers); ... devcon->DSSetConstantBuffers(0,3,multiBuffers); I only got that from a directX Sample. • Amazon EC2 Elastic Load Balancing - strategy for zero downtime server restart

  I have 5 web servers (Apache/mod_perl) behind Amazon EC2 Elastic Load Balancing, when I deploy codes to the web servers, I am doing this.. For each machine, shutdown the Apache Update the code Start over the server and proceed to the next server I think when my server is shutdown, ELB will not distribute request to my server, but how about the request still serving? I think a better approach is Stop accepting new request from ELB Sleep for sometimes, shutdown web server only if all requests are responded Update the codes Start the server again But how to perform (1) and (2) from my local sever? Do I need to use AWS API? or other easy way to do it? Thanks.

• GRUB2 not detecting OS on raid partitions

  I have recently added a drive to a system and have successfully raid'ed (RAID-1) the paritions, with the exception of the boot partition. I have it ready and mirrored, but can't get GRUB2 (update-grub) to find it. System: Ubuntu 11.04 Raid Metadata: 1.2 If I run update-grub, it finds the kernel images on the /dev/sda2 partition (present root) but not the images on /dev/md127. /dev/md127 is composed of "missing" and "/dev/sdb2". fdisk on /dev/sdb confirms that sdb2 is of type fd (raid autodetect) and is also flagged bootable. I have two things I want to do. Make the boot.cfg on /dev/sdb2 have a menu option to have the root be /dev/md127 Install grub onto /dev/md127 so the actual boot.cfg from there is being used. Thanks!

• Totem crashes immediately after startup in 12.10

  I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.10 and did sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get update. Then I installed ubuntu-restricted-extras, audacious and vlc from Software Center. After that I tried launch Totem Movie player but in terminal following error comes up: (totem:9295): Gdk-ERROR **: The program 'totem' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadDrawable (invalid Pixmap or Window parameter)'. (Details: serial 1808 error_code 9 request_code 152 minor_code 9) (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it. To debug your program, run it with the GDK_SYNCHRONIZE environment variable to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.) Trace/breakpoint trap (core dumped) I tried purge and again install. But the error remains. What should I do?

• What is a good Foxit reader equivalent (or other PDF editor)?

  On Windows, I have found Foxit Reader to be quite handy when I need to highlight texts in PDF document, make annotations, etc. etc. Unfortunately, I have not yet found product as user friendly (which also does not corrupt PDF files...) and full-featured as Foxit software... Any recommendations? ** UPDATE ** I just tried the Open Office PDF import extension. It seems to work ok... If anyone used it for a while, I'd appreciate your feedback on that one. Thanks! ** UPDATE ** You can't highlight text with OpenOffice's PDF extension. Doesn't matter, I was reading this thread and found out about Xournal . As it turns out, it's in the repository. It does not natively save in PDF, but once all edits are done, the document can be exported to PDF (and overwrite the old one, just like Gimp with the native .XCE format and original PNG file, for example) I realize that this question is no longer a question in itself, but could be migrated to community wiki. However, feedbacks are still welcome! ** EDIT ** So... to close up this question, I have to say that I adopted Xournal . It is light and works pretty well, even on multi-page PDF documents.   Ever since a windows update that took down my IIS6 mail server a few weeks back, I've been really paranoid about my mail server working. So every time I run a windows update I fire up command prompt and send myself a quick test mail. Like so: > telnet localhost 25 > helo domain.com > mail from: [email protected] > rcpt to: [email protected] > data some random body to mail myself . This is a realy great way to test my mail server, but it's a pain in the neck to do quickly. Is there anyway i can run this in a batch script or something as a quick test? I've tried a bat file but this just waits after i call telnet I've also explored if telnet accepts any input files and it does not seem to. What's the best way to do this?

  This is not as much as a question as it is a note to those out there that upgrade their motherboards with better processors and the like. Here's my story. Recently I upgraded my processor. System specifications: • Asus A8V Deluxe • 4GB RAM • ATI Radeon 3870 AGP graphics card (I believe that's it) Anyway, I decided to put a dual core Opteron 180 in this rig, but the problem was that I needed to update the BIOS to V-1017, and not knowing the consequences, I went up to the Asus site and got the newest, the latest and the greatest, 1018.002 thinking that it was the best for this board, however it wasn't. I used the Asus EXFlash, which makes life a lot easier, flashed the BIOS and all of a sudden I start getting this message: USB overcurrent protection, system shutting down in 15 seconds to protect your system. WELL SHIT... This is a new one on me... I read the blogs, all the posts on this thing, and did all that everyone else did to correct the problem, but nothing helped. So i decided to start from square one, went back to Asus and looked at the BIOS download... OMG... IT WAS A BETA. So, I downloaded the update that was suggested 1017< and installed it and wouldn't you know, it took care of the problem, no more USB overcurrent protection, no more crashing. I write this today to let you all know about this, just in case you have an issue such as this. Well there you all go. Fly safe and eat your vegetables.

• Graphics hardware warning when updating to 14.04

  As I use Ubuntu at work I just update only LTS versions but now I'm not sure if I can/should. As my computer is now ten years old I would change if was mine but as it is owned by my employer I have to work with it. It's not a bad one, it runs fine (this was not true when still had Windows on it ;-). When updating to 14.04, it warns about possible bad/slow performance with Unity 3D so I stop updating as I am at work, not my own computer. As I understand from http://askubuntu.com/a/438958/25305 Nvidia Geforce FX 5500 graphics card is still supported in 14.04. • Statsd, Graphite and graphs

  I've setup Graphite and statsd and both are running well. I'm using the example-client.py from graphite/examples to measure load values and it's OK. I started doing tests with statsd and at first it seemed ok because it generated some graphs but now it doesn't look quite well. First, this is my storage-schema.conf: pattern = .* retentions = 10:2160,60:10080,600:262974 I'm using this command to send data to statsd: echo 'ssh.invalid_users:1|c'| nc -w 1 -u localhost 8126 it executes, I click Update Graph in the Graphite web interface, it generates a line, hit again Update and the line disappears. If I execute the previous command 5 times, the graph line will reach 2 and it will actually save it. Again running the same command two times, graph line reaches 2 and disappears. I can't find what I have misconfigured. The intended use is this: tail -n 0 -f /var/log/auth.log|grep --line-buffered "Invalid user" | while read line; do echo "ssh.invalid_users:1|c" | nc -w 1 -u localhost 8126; done

  Hi there, after i did a partial upgrade my screen went blank. I think i used an onboard graphics card but i cannot be sure. Please advise me. i tried Ctrl+Alt+F1 at startup and did a apt-get upgrade and apt-get update. Didn't work. Am very frustrated after spending 3 days to get ubuntu to work for it to kill my screen the moment i did a first update. Please help.

• Windows Services don't automatically start after reboot?

  We've got some Windows services written in .NET. They start fine manually within the services mmc, but despite being set to Automatic, they never start when powering on (or rebooting) the machine. Update In the event log, instead of seeing "xyz started", alongside all the other services starting, I just see "The xyz service entered the stopped state." and a seperate error that says "A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the slsvc service.". If I manually start them, then I get a normal in the event log as expected, and all is fine - until the next Windows Update patch which forces a reboot and all the services are off again. Any ideas? I've tried setting them to Delayed Start with no apparent difference.

• How can I get my monitor's maximum resolution without the proprietary AMD graphic driver installed?

  I am using Ubuntu 14.04. I have an AMD Radeon 5570 HD graphic card. Actually, the default open source REDWOOD drivers aren't allowing me to choose my monitor's maximum screen resolution(which is 1366 x 768). I just have two resolutions displayed which are 1024x768 and 800x600 . If I give the command : xrandr -s 1366x768 then the output is: Size 1366x768 not found in available modes So just for the sake of getting 1366x768 resolution I am forced to install the proprietary graphic driver that AMD gives me from its site. But if I install it(which itself is quite a problem-prone process), I undergo a lot of 'inconvenience'. Sometimes after an OS update, the driver crashes unity. Then I will have to uninstall that driver from a tty and google around for a solution. Also I encounter screen tearing problems occasionally. In addition I also cant see my login screen(See this question which states this particular problem). The main problem is AMD does not update its driver as quick as Ubuntu updates its OS. This is quite irritating. So, I want the maximum resolution(and performance) that my graphics card and monitor can give me without installing the 'problematic' proprietary graphic card driver that AMD gives. Is this possible? Suggestions please. Thanks in advance. • Should one use a separate database for application data and user data?

  I’ve been working on a project for a little while and I’m unsure which is the better architecture. I’m interested in the consensus. The answer to me seems fairly obvious but something about it is digging at me and I can't pick out what. The TL;DR is: how do you handle a program with application data and user data in the same DB which needs to be able to receive updates to the application data periodically? One database for user data and one for application, or both in one? The detailed version is.. if an application has a database which needs to maintain application data AND user data, and the user data all references application data, it feels more natural to me to store them in the same database. But if there exists a need to be able to update the application data within this database periodically, should this be stripped into two databases so that one can simply download the updated application data database file as an update and replace the old one? Or should they remain as one database, and the application data be updated via a script which inserts the new data into the existing database? The second sounds clearly preferable to me... but for some reason just doesn’t feel right, and I can't pick out quite why.

• Ubuntu 12.10 won't display properly after kernel upgrade

  After updating a system today, Ubuntu's doesn't display correctly. The desktop now looks like this. It was working properly before. I had to use the terminal to run synaptic package manager, so I could view the update history; which is as follows: Commit Log for Wed Nov 7 11:50:36 2012 Upgraded the following packages: linux-image-generic (3.5.0.17.19) to 3.5.0.18.21 Installed the following packages: linux-image-3.5.0-18-generic (3.5.0-18.29) linux-image-extra-3.5.0-18-generic (3.5.0-18.29) Prior to this issue, the last active driver was nvidia-current-updates, version 304.51. I tried using the nvidia-current driver, version 304.51.really.304.43 instead, but the problem persists. I tried running nvidia-settings from terminal, so I could try configuring something, but the application informs that the Nvidia driver is not being used. As the x-swat repository has nothing for Quantal, I desperately used the unstable x-edgers repository & upgraded, but to no avail; so I purged it. The display should normally be full HD, but the only available resolutions now are 1024x768(4:3) and 800x600(4:3). The system is Dell XPS-L702X, with NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M, and 17" screen. How can I fix this problem? Update: I tried using the Nouveau third-party driver & this fixes the issue. However, if you have any idea how to get the Nvidia drivers working properly with the latest kernel, please share; as I've noticed some videos playing very slowly on the system, though I'm not sure exactly why.

• How can I persist certificates in Java's cacerts?

  We need to have a certificate in Java's cacerts keystore for one of our servers that is authenticated by LDAP. We are using Ubuntu server. We have successfully done this by updating the cacerts file in /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk-amd64/jre/lib/security but occasionally a Java update is installed and the cacerts file seems to be getting replaced by a default one that doesn't contain our changes. This doesn't happen very often but it is becoming a bit of a pain when it does happen. Is there a better way of adding things to cacerts so that they don't get lost when a Java update happens?   Recently one of our key engineers resigned. This engineer has co-authored a major component of our application. We are not hitting Truck number yet though, but we're getting close :) Before the guy waltzes off, we want to take actions necessary to recover from this loss as smoothly as possible and eventually 'grow' the rest of the team to competently cover the parts he authored. More about the context: the domain the component covers and the code are no rocket science but still a lot of non-trivial stuff. Some team members can already cover a lot of this but those have a lot on their plates and we want to make sure every. (as I see it): Improve tests and test coverage - especially for the non-trivial stuff, Update high level documents, Document any 'funny stuff' the code does (we had to do some heavy duct-taping), Add / update code documentation - have everything with 'public' visibility documented. Finally the questions: What do you think are the actions to take in this situation? What have you done in such situations? What did or did not work well for you?

• T60 Screen/LCD gets black after some minutes with a highpitched sound rising and fading

  Just now my T60 screen got "black" (so no display). On my second monitor: no problems so the VGA output works. Symptom: Screen blanks / no display, but it works on the second monitor Steps to reproduce: - boot - wait (it does not matter what you do you do not have to login or anything) - (now the monitor of the laptop slowly begins to make a ssssssssHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHWOEOEssssssss noise of about 10 seconds) - right after the sounds ends, the monitor gets black. Sometimes it seems to be the same each time. Software: Installed no new software before/after, running ZoneAlarm and antivirus. Other: It does not feel hot in any place, there don't seem to be running processes with strange behaviour. Warranty: Out of warranty What was I doing: Typing text on a website and doing some PHP coding in a text editor. What can I do here other than buy a new laptop? Does it sound familiar to known cases? Which does not seem the core issue but some electric issue so it seems replacing the LCD is not the thing to do here. If it is not the LCD that needs to be replaced (see other threads), which parts can I order to fix this? Is there any information which could lead me to identify the issue? I have read replacing the "inverter" AND the "backlightning" would that make sense? Update 2: I replaced the inverter with another inverter, but IO have the same problem. I DID notice that the inverter is the component that makes the sssssssssssssHHHHHHHHHH sound AND it becomes very hot in a few seconds. (So both the old and the test one) The problem is hmmm wat is then the thing that makes the inverter hot by (assumption) after which it shuts itself down. Is it either the input or the output? The output seems to me not, because the screen seems to function so it must be the electricity coming in. But what causes it to become so hot would it be the VGA card outputting some unusual high voltage seems unlikely? I am looking for the component to order / replace update 3: Great news. Ewendish gave me the hint to look in the BIOS. While I was in the BIOS I noticed that the screen did not switch off and there was not a high pitched sound. So I lowered some settings in the BIOS. I then noticed that with brightness turned to 0 (via FN End), it does not make a high pitched sound and does not turn off, with brightness turned up just three "stripes" it starts making the sound. So I could from now on work under lowest brightness modus or... see where the problem lies. So as stated below with either power management or display drivers / ATI Catalyst settings / Windows display settings. I'm trying to see where it lies, but I will google some first. Update 4: I wiped clean the Windows XP installation and installed Windows 7 on it. Unfortunately the problem remains: as soon as the brightness goes up the screen starts hissing. This means... back to original thought: it probably IS a hardware problem. Although ... again... if it is NOT the inverter, what is it? Could it be the backlightning component? I could try to switch that with a another T60... but this is quite tricky.

• Neverending issues with grub (ubuntu 14.04 on ASUS with Win8 dual boot)

  This is the most frustrating issue I have ever run into using Ubuntu and Windows in the same machine. I have an ASUS K46CB, 6GB RAM and preinstalled Windows 8.1 64-bits. I have successfully installed Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, also 64-bits. To do so,I followed this tutorial whenever possible. I only failed on the disable secure boot part: there is no 'Secure-boot' or even UEFI mention in my BIOS! Screenshots from other BIOS of the same model show the option under Boot, but in mine there is absolutely none. Because of this, I cannot boot into Ubuntu. The computer loads straight into Windows. I tried running boot repair, but got an error (i can show the log, but it's pretty long). Does anyone know how to fix this issue? UPDATE I reinstalled Ubuntu. Same problem, goes straight to Window. Boot-Repair informs me that i am using Windows in Legacy mode. It excecuted with no errors this time, but after restarting GRUB was still missing. I can't turn off Secure Boot yet. UPDATE I tried using Boot Repair to install grub on a boot-grub 1mb partition. Still boots straight to windows. I feel like punching something

• Updating wordpress in a multi-node environment

  I'm finding this very tricky in a multi node environment, with code under revision control. AKA. multiple frontends and single database. I have a deployment process that pushes a git repo to the servers, but obviously if I update Wordpress from within the admin panel, it will update the files to one FE. Then I would need to copy over the new files to the other FE nodes. Plus, whenever these changes are written when Wordpress updates on a node, it writes code into the git repo. As such, it then breaks the auto deploys that perform 'git pulls', as it then has untracked changes and refuses to pull in new deploys unless manually intervened. How does one easily keep Wordpress updated in a multi node (load balanced) environment?

• How can I remove bluetooth-applet in 11.10?

  I tried adding rfkill block bluetooth to /etc/rc.local. This did not work. I tried adding both blacklist bluetooth and blacklist btusb to etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf. This did not work. So I went to Synaptic to remove it altogether, but when I marked bluez for removal it said it was going to also remove gnome-shell as well! So naturally I didn't do that. (Is it sane to run a potential security problem like bluetooth by default? And why is something like that so tightly integrated into Gnome shell?) Can anyone tell me how to get rid of this annoying and unnecessary process?

• install clamav from surceforge

  I'm using Ubuntu 10.04. I'm affraid I've installed a virus on my computer (I've clicked a link which was a virus), I'd prefere to check if everything is fine. I've installed clamAV using Synaptic. The installed version was 0.96.5, while the most recent version is 0.97.6. When I was trying to update virus database, I got a warning that the version of clamAV I'm using is outdated. Since I didn't know how to update the software by Synaptic or apt (both show the installed version as the newest) I've uninstalled all and downloaded the recent version from sourceforge. I've unpacked the tar.gz archive, entered the folder but when I type ./configure I'm getting the message: configure: error: Please install zlib and zlib-devel packages When I type sudo aptitude install zlib zlib-devel The terminal output says there is no such packages (there is no package zlib-devel and there is many packages which name contain zlib). I suppose the link contained probably the Windows virus, but I'd prefere to make sure there is nothing in my computer. As well as I'm not sure if the virus, even without harming my system, can send itself to my e-mail contacts or not.
