• How can I deploy my .NET app to Amazon EC2?

  I have a .NET Windows service and a .NET Web Application that I would like to deploy to my Amazon EC2 Windows 2008 instances. At this point, all I need to do is to copy the zipped files across to the EC2 box and remote desktop to the EC2 instance and finish the deployment. In order to do this, I have tried LogMeIn Hamachi2 to create a P2P VPN and use RoboCopy to copy the files, however it seems Hamachi doesn't work on Windows EC2. What is your solution for deploying your .NET apps to Windows EC2 instances? I want to avoid running an FTP server on the box just to get my files up on the server and don't have a VPN server (like OpenVPN) running to run a cloud based VPN solution. Perhaps I can find a simple way of using Amazon S3 as a strategy? Any ideas? Suggestions?

  I have a toString() representation of an ArrayList. Copying the toString() value to clipboard, I want to copy it back into my IDE editor, and create the ArrayList instance in one line. In fact, what I'm really doing is this: my ArrayList.toString() has data I need to setup a unit test. I want to copy this ArrayList.toString() into my editor to build a test against this edge case I don't want to parse anything by hand My input looks like this: [15.82, 15.870000000000001, 15.92, 16.32, 16.32, 16.32, 16.32, 17.05, 17.05, 17.05, 17.05, 18.29, 18.29, 19.16] The following do not work: Arrays.asList() google collections Lists.newArrayList() Suggestions?

• jCarousel: Can you remove all items and rebind to a new collection?

  jCarousel documentation states the following: By passing the callback function itemLoadCallback as configuration option, you are able to dynamically create (li) items for the content. {...} jCarousel contains a convenience method add() that can be passed the index of the item to create and the innerHTML string of the item to be created. My Question: Is it possible to remove all items and rebind to a new collection? BTW: I don't necessarily need a "convenience method" to do this. I'm very open to workarounds. FYI: This strategy doesn't seem to work.

• How to disable Center Key (CK) and let only Left Soft Key (LSK) be used in j2me

  Hello everyone, I created a custom item in which I need to use the Center Key for the purpose of selecting and I am successfully able to use it with the keyPressed event using the keyCode as -5. The problem is, as soon as I press the CK, it also clicks on the command above the LSK and that causes the menu to pop up. Is there any way that I can disable the CK for a particular command or something like that (because I dont need CK, since I can click on the command through LSK as well, I want to use the CK specifically for the custom item)? Unfortunately I can't seem to find a way to get the underlying data of the custom object, and of course as in the above example, using object simply gives me a string of types definitions, rather than access to the underlying data. • C# XPath Not Finding Anything

  I'm trying to use XPath to select the items which have a facet with Location values, but currently my attempts even to just select all items fail: The system happily reports that it found 0 items, then returns (instead the nodes should be processed by a foreach loop). I'd appreciate help either making my original query or just getting XPath to work at all. • Default values for model fields in a Ruby on Rails form

  I have a Model which has fields username, data, tags, date, votes. I have form using form_for that creates a new item and puts it into the database. However, as you can guess I want the votes field to equal 0 and the date field to equal the current date when it is placed into the database. How and where would I set/apply these values to the item? I can get it to work with hidden fields in the form but this comes with obvious issues (someone could set the votes field to a massive number.

  I am selecting an IEnumerable<dynamic> from the database using Rob Conery's Massive framework. The structure comes back in a flat format Poco C#. I need to transform the data and output it to a Json array (format show at bottom). • UITabBarController's 'More' navigation controller disappears under UINavigationController

  I am using a UITabBarController as well as a UINavigationController on my app. In my UITabBarController I am using more than 5 items so I automatically get the 'More' item. I've managed to add a saving procedure so the order of those items will be kept in case somebody changes the order etc. With 'More' active I get the More navigation controller with the 'Edit' item positioned under my UINavigationController. Both navigation controller are visible. When I click on 'Edit though the More navigation controller disappears and seem to be hiding under my UINavigationController and therefore I can't see/use the 'Done' function to save my new order What did I miss? • Correct permutation cycle for Verhoeff algorithm

  Hello, I'm implementing the Verhoeff algorithm for a check digit scheme, but there seems to be some disagreement in web sources as to which permutation cycle should form the basis of the permutation table. Wikipedia uses: (36)(01589427) while apparently, Numerical Recipies uses a different cycle and this book uses: (0)(14)(23)(56789), quoted from a 1990 article by Winters. It also notes that Verhoeff used the one Wikipedia quotes. Now, my number theory is a little rusty, but the Wikipedia cycle clearly will repeat after the 8th power, while the book one will take 10, despite it saying that s^8=s. Table 2.14(b) has other errors in the 2-cycles, so this is dubious anyway. Unfortunately, I don't have copies of the original articles (and am too tight to pay/disgusted that 40-year old knowledge is still being held to ransom by publishers), nor a copy of Numerical Recipes to check (and am loath to install their paranoia-induced copy protection plug-in to view online). So does any one know which is correct? Are they both correct?

• How can I make mock-0.6 return a sequence of values?

  I'm using the mock-0.6 library from http://www.voidspace.org.uk/python/mock/mock.html to mock out a framework for testing, and I want to have a mock method return a series of values, each time it's called. Right now, this is what I figured should work: def returnList(items): def sideEffect(*args, **kwargs): for item in items: yield item yield mock.DEFAULT return sideEffect mock = Mock(side_effect=returnList(aListOfValues)) values = mock() log.info("Got %s", values) And the log output is this: subsys: INFO: Got <generator object func at 0x1021db500> So, the side effect is returning the generator, not the next value, which seems wrong. Where am I getting this wrong?

  The facts: When a file is moved, there's two possibilities: The source and destination file are on the same partition and only the file system index is updated The source and destination are on two different file system and the file need to be moved byte per byte. (aka copy on move) The question: How can I determine if a file will be either logically or physically moved ? I'm transferring large files (700+ megs) and would adopt a different behaviors for each situation. Edit: I've already coded a moving file dialog with a worker thread that perform the blocking io call to copy the file a meg at a time. It provide information to the user like rough estimate of the remaining time and transfer rate. The problem is: how do I know if the file can be moved logically before trying to move it physically ?

• Unicode characters in URLs

  In 2010, would you serve URLs containing UTF-8 characters in a large web portal? Unicode characters are forbidden as per the RFC on URLs (see here). They would have to be percent encoded to be standards compliant. My main point, though, is serving the unencoded characters for the sole purpose of having nice-looking URLs, so percent encoding is out. All major browsers seem to be parsing those URLs okay no matter what the RFC says. My general impression, though, is that it gets very shaky when leaving the domain of web browsers: URLs getting copy+pasted into text files, E-Mails, even Web sites with a different encoding HTTP Client libraries Exotic browsers, RSS readers Is my impression correct that trouble is to be expected here, and thus it's not a practical solution (yet) if you're serving a non-technical audience and it's important that all your links work properly even if quoted and passed on? Is there some magic way of serving nice-looking URLs in HTML http://www.example.com/düsseldorf?neighbourhood=Lörick that can be copy+pasted with the special characters intact, but work correctly when re-used in older clients?

• SQL Server Upgrade 'Developer > Enterprise'

  Hey guys, My company purchased Visual Studio Pro 2008 last year, which had a 'free' copy of SQL Server Developer, which I have been using for development. We are wanting to upgrade the copy of developer edition to enterprise (As we now want to use the server as a production server), and have purchased the licenses for this. Now... Morally we're in the clear... However does this comply with MS licensing T&C's? We have Developer installed how we want it, and don't really want to uninstall SQL Server Dev just to install SQL Server Ent. Is there a way to transfer the license key to our Enterprise key without having to reinstall? Thanks, JD

  I have been messing around with a way to justify align a collection of UIView subclasses within a containing view. I am having a little bit of trouble with the algorithm and was hoping someone could help spot my errors. • [SOLVED] Store files in C# EXE file

  It is actually useful for me to store some files in EXE to copy to selected location. I'm generating HTML and JS files and need to copy some CSS, JS and GIFs. Snippet System.IO.File.WriteAllBytes(@"C:\MyFile.bin", ProjectNamespace.Properties.Resources.MyFile); doesn't work for me! On "WriteAllBytes" it says: "cannot convert from 'System.Drawing.Bitmap' to 'byte[]'" for image and "cannot convert from 'string' to 'byte[]'" for text file. Help! UPDATE: Solved below.

• Bottom button bar overlaps the last element of Listview!!

  I have a listview which is part of an Activity. I want user to have a choice for batch deleting the items in the listview, so when he chooses the corresponding option from the menu, every list item gets a checkbox next to it. When user clicks any checkbox, a button bar is to slide up from bottom (as in gmail app) and clicking delete button deletes the selected items, however clicking cancel button on the bar would uncheck all the checked items. All other list items can be scrolled up, but you cant scroll up the very last item of the list, therefore user can not select that item if he intends to. Here is the screenshot of the overlap. I have tried using the listview footer option, but that appends the bar to the end of the list instead of keeping it fixed at the bottom of the screen. Is there a way I could "raise" the listview enough so that the overlap wont happen?? BTW, I have already tried adding the bottom-margin to the listview itself, or the LinearLayout wrapping the listview right before making the button-bar visible, but it introduces other bugs like clicking one checkbox checks some another checkbox in listview.

  I've made some experimental code that I would like to save in the repository, but I don't want it on the main branch. How would you commit this to a branch? Maybe I got this wrong, but of what I've understood about branching, all you actually do is copying already checked in code to another directory in the repository. I suppose one could copy the main branch to another location, and then change the working copy repository location pointer to point at that location, and then commit the experimental code. But that seems a bit long-winded. Is this really how you do it?

  I'm using SQL Server 2005, VB.NET 2005. I want to be able to import a very large excel file into a SQL table called "XYZ" I've done this by doing the following: 1. Save the excel file as csv.(Using SaveAs XLCSV option) 2. Build a datatable "ABC" From CSV.(using ODBC Connection and Select * from '*'.csv command) 3. copy the datatable"ABC" into database table "xyz" (using sqlBulkCopy.WriteToServer()) It works fine without any error but when i checked my database i found that data type for some columns has been changed and hence it didn't copy some of the records.Any help would be appreciated
