• How does R treat positional arguments

  I'm a python guy and very new to R (so far, all I've done is copy-paste code and screen-shot the resulting, graph). I would now like to actually learn the language so that I can draw useful plots (right now, I am trying to plot this). In attempting my first plot, I came across this function call: sets_options("universe", seq(from = 0, to = 25, by = 0.1)) Now, I would like to know if I can achieve the same result by calling sets_options("universe", seq(0, 25, 0.1)) The help page for seq doesn't speak to this specifically (or I'm not reading it correctly), so I was hoping someone could shed some light on how R handles positional arguments I tried calling the function that way in R and it worked (no syntax errors, etc), but I don't know how to test the output of that function, so I'm forced to ask here

• Require help with program for edutainment game

  I am working on a factorisation problem and for small numbers it is working well. I've been able to calculate the factors (getting the answers from Wolfram Alpha) for small numbers, like the one on the Wikipedia page (5959). Along with the Wikipedia page I have been following this guide. Once again, as my Math knowledge is pretty poor I cannot follow what I need to do next. EDIT: It finally works! I'll post the working code up here once I've got it fully working so that others in my predicament can learn from it.

• Is it still too early to hop aboard the Python 3 train?

  I'm still a beginner to Python, so I thought I could as well learn the newest iteration of Python. Especially since it is now 3.1 or 3.2 something. But it seems like many mayor modules are still only supported by 2.6. Like the python-mysql module; from what I read on http://mysql-python.blogspot.com/ it seems like 3.x support won't be seen in any near future. Do you use version 3, how do you get around these problems? Should I retreat to 2.6? If not, what should I use to connect to MySQL?

I heard this about Lisp, Smalltalk, Haskell, pure functional programming in general.. What are your experiences about this? I know that the right language to use depends on your needs, but I would like to know the one that better improve your programming skills in general. While I can use this perfectly as a shell script (even without a shebang) in my .zshrc the error is a parse error on this line if [[ ! ${git_status}}... What do I need to do to get it ready for zshell? Note: I realize the answer could be "go learn zsh syntax," but I was hoping for a quick hand with this if it's not too difficult.

• WPF Books in 2010

  I'm looking to learn WPF, and I'd like to get a book to help in the process. Most of the popular questions on SO regarding actual books are from 2008, and I wanted to see if recommendations for books had changed at all. WPF Unleashed, which seems to be the most popular recommendation, was published in 2006, which is quite a while ago, with the lightening-quick pace that Microsoft has been following with .NET. Does this book still work? For some background, I'm a web developer (using MVC, so MVVM makes sense to me conceptually), looking to make the jump to desktop development. I did C# a while ago, but I'll be picking up a separate C# book to get up to speed on that. I am not interested in Silverlight. I am not necessarily interested in flashy UIs right now, as I'm working on business software but what I am interested in is good, clean, intuitive user interfaces.

• Is Learning the win32 API Worthwhile?

  I was certain that somebody would have specifically asked this question, but from what I can see no-one has (there's been a question about learning win32 but that doesn't cover whether it's worthwhile doing so). I am very interested in gaining a deeper understanding of all the systems I use (I mostly program in C#, at least professionally), so I wondered, very simply - is learning win32 worthwhile, or is it overkill? Am I wasting my time? Is the knowledge I'd gain worth the effort? Similar / related questions on StackOverflow: Does it still make sense to learn low level WinAPI programming? How relevant is Win32 programming to modern professionals?

• JavaScript pack("d") - binary strings

  I'm trying to replicate the Perl and PHP style pack and unpack functions in JavaScript. Unsigned integers were easy enough, so my pack('n') and pack('N') are ok. But my lack of a computer science background is a hurdle now and I don't know where to start with pack('d') for packing JavaScript's standard floating point. Is there a JavaScript library for this out there? If not, is there a good resource where I can learn how to do this? I am fine with bitwise and binary level operations in JS, I just don't know where to start with the logic. Thanks.

  Hi, I use LINQ to SQL to get data from a database and use a service contract to access it in Silverlight at the client side. I display the data in a DataGrid. Now how do I make sure that any changes in the datagrid is written back to the database? EDIT: This is the example code I implemented: http://www.silverlight.net/learn/tutorials/sqldatagrid-cs/ Here I wanted any change in the datagrid reflected back in the database. The SubmitChanges function works in the DataContext object which is: public partial class DataClasses1DataContext : System.Data.Linq.DataContext But this is not exposed in the contract and so not visible in the client side code.

I wanted to start using versioning on them so that when we work with outside vendors on a project, if/when they overwrite my work, I'd like to be able to go back and get the version before. My question is that I think I'm not looking for the correct terms in searching for information, but what kind of resources are there to learn how to install the software for versioning or a site to help me get started.   Good morning - I'm an intermediate-level developer who wants to build on online data-driven app (CRUD with a few calculations and basic HTML form inputs, nothing fancy) that keeps track of user sessions, and looks "professional" (or at least not "homemade"). • is it possible to write data to a collection in wpf?

  Hello. In looking through samples I have seen a number of examples where it is possible to present data within a wpf applicaiton by binding to collections. However I was wondering is it possible to write to a collection from an applicaiton. Say for example i have 2 or more fields such as names and I wanted to have hte ability to add up to three names in my application ( all stored in memory). Will collections serve this purpose. In the past with asp.net I have done this by creating data tables and storing values on the fly or during the session. I am trying to learn WPF and I was wondering if collections work in the same fashion? If so could you please post an example or point me to references that show examples of this?   Does anyone knows ANY material writen in/for DELPHI around the graphics topic? Planning to build a software for medical imaging processing . Thinking in 3D UI to absorve the power of nvidias GTX graphics card, and some real-time 2D processing integrated with high-end scanners. Please dont take this as a "rant" but, we have zillions of C++ books writen about that kind of topic and nothing for pascal/delphi. If you have some experience could you comment about that? Is it better to learn c++, to have access to that material? Can i go with delphi? I have experience with delphi, but none with graphics... And i have a deadline... Thanks.

  In an attempt to better learn Rails and I'm building a simple Blackjack game, but I'm running into a problem of storing the variable. I understand how to store user-genereated data into the db using form_for, but I'm struggling to create a random number and put it in the db. @hand = rand(9) + 2 I have "hand" as a field in my db, just curious how to store this random number.   Hi. I'm trying to select all elements that have a class, get their ID's (if they have one), and append individual spans to the end of my document based on that information. This is as far as I've managed to get: var element = $(".foo"), element_id = element.attr("id"), span_id = "for-" + element + "-id-" + element_id, ; I am hoping to append a span for each element gathered. Here are some examples of the span format I wish to achieve: <span id="for-img-id-profile"></span> <span id="for-div-id-content"></span> If possible, I would also like to allow for elements without an ID to be formatted like so: <span id="for-h1"></span> I really appreciate the help as I'm very new to jQuery and am trying to learn.

• Prevent auto scrolling when clicking tab anchor

  On my page I have some tabs that I've added some javascript so when they're clicked the page loads the tab's anchor URL instead of simply changing the view with AJAX, but I now want to stop the browser from auto scrolling to the anchor location. Having done some research, I'm pretty sure I just need to add a couple of lines so that when clicked it returns false or prevents default but, being a noob, I've no idea where to put them!?! • What features do you expect from a Java (Rich) Client Framework?

  I'm intending to design (and provide a reference implementation for) a new Swing Rich Client Framework. My job and personal experience covers many project-specific Swing client frameworks as well as the Eclipse RCP, and every one of them had some original and clever concepts, but also drawbacks and rigid realizations. My plan is to incorporate the best of those concepts and features into a new framework whose core is very open and extendable. For my must-have-features list, I'm counting on your input and hope you can share some concept pearls & diamonds you've encountered in other frameworks, or features you always wanted to have or have in a better way.
