• Maximal Length of List to Shuffle with Python random.shuffle?

  I have a list which I shuffle with the Python built in shuffle function (random.shuffle) However, the Python reference states: Note that for even rather small len(x), the total number of permutations of x is larger than the period of most random number generators; this implies that most permutations of a long sequence can never be generated. Now, I wonder what this "rather small len(x)" means. 100, 1000, 10000,... Can anybody clarify? Thanks!

  In short, I would like to do this: const char **stringPtr = &getString(); However, I understand that you can't & on rvalues. So I'm stuck with this: const char *string = getString(); const char **stringPtr = &string; I can live with two lines. Am I introducing problems with this hack? I should have no fear of passing stringPtr out of the function it is declared in, right?

• Is there a way to do WeakList (think WeakReference) in CLR?

  A List does not work in the way that I want. The way that I want is that WeakReferences are automatically removed from the list when the object they weakly reference is garbage collected. ConditionalWeakTable does not do what I want either, because although its keys and values are weakly referenced and collectable, you cannot enumerate them at all.

• Facebook, Flash and maintaining state

  So here's the situation: I have a Flash application I'm deploying to facebook as a canvas app. There are various states within this app - different "pages", sort of. I want to be able to share this app with other users using Facebook's baked-in sharing mechanism. However, I want each state to have its own share button. That way when someone clicks Share on page 3 they are actually sharing page 3, not the root of the whole application. Does anyone know if Facebook exposes some mechanism by which this could be possible? It would be as simple as passing a string into the iFrame that holds the canvas app, so I could load it in as a FlashVar and work from there. I'm kind of beating my head against the wall - does this request make sense, and has anyone tackled anything like this before? Thanks!

• jQuery: how to pick unique IDs ?

  Hello. New to whole this jQuery (and javascript altogether, heh) and so far it's been excellent, but now I'm in a small pickle. Let's say I have list of forms generated from SQL database and every single one of them has to have unique id, so how I can select the specific item that is to be manipulated (changing values via php). the $("#submit").click(function()) will trigger every submit buttons on the page, so how I can the #submit to be some random id that I clicked. There might be a smarter way, but I'm new to this so try to bear with me. thought of passing the unique value with onClick="myfunction(unique_id)", but don't know how it goes with jQuery. hope this made any sense

  Rake (like make) is able to have many targets/tasks specified on invocation. Is it possible for a rake task to access the list of tasks the user invoked, in order to do its job? Scenario: Consider a Rake-based build tool. A help task would like to know what tasks were also specified in order to print their usage and halt the build process. The benefit of this as opposed to rake-style parameter passing are cleaner syntax (rake help build instead of rake help task=build) and chaining (rake help build run_tests would print usage for both).

In "members" table, i have "id" as the primary key and "username" as a unique field. Now my situation is: When flash want to display a member's profile. I tried, but I found that I can't access the session variable in Model. I googled and knew this is the Model normal behavior, RoR won't pass the session variable to Model. • C#, XmlDocument, and special ISO Latin characters

  I'm trying to load up xml into an XmlDocument, but it doesn't recognize the encoded '&eacute' and throws an error 'An error occurred while parsing Entity Name'. Now I can add a custom entity set in a DTD of my xml, so the XmlDocument loads properly. But what I'm hoping is that I can reference a url that has a common set of these ISO Latin encoded characters. Is this possible, or do I need to inject a custom list of DTD sets?

I'm trying to pass an object into a function but think there's a problem with $(this) not actually being valid at the point of passing it in. $('textarea#quote').live('bind',function(){ }).limit('10',$(this).parents('form').children().find('span#qc') ); The second parameter can be either a string or an object like $('span#qc'), but I also want to be able to pass in an object which references the current one. Why? Because I have several forms on same page, each containing textarea#quote, so depending on which form is selected I want to be able to reference a particular element within the same form. • Maven easyb plugin java heap space settings?

  Hi, I attempted to change my heap size for maven easyb plugin http://www.easyb.org/maven-easyb-plugin/. In my easyb test I added standard code to print the heap size using the code Runtime.getFreeMemory() and Runtime.getTotalMemory(). I tried setting the MAVEN_OPTS=-Xmx1024m -Xms1024m and also set the maven opts in Maven surefire plugin. Now when I run the same class from the Junit I can see the getTotalMemory() displaying a number close 1Gig but the when the same classes are invoked from easyb plugin they do not reflect the memory size. Shouldn't there be a way of passing JVM opts to maven easyb plugin when it runs these easyb tests? At the very minimum it should atleast pick up the MAVEN_OPTS settings from the environment. Has someone bumped into problems like this? (A search on this group's archive does not reveal much)

  I am trying to wrap a c++ class (let's call it "Spam") written by someone else with swig to expose it to Python. After solving several problems, I am able to import the module in python, but when I try to create an object of such class I obtain the following error: foo = Spam.Spam('abc',3) Traceback (most recent call last): File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module> File "Spam.py", line 96, in __init__ this = _Spam.new_Spam(*args) NotImplementedError: Wrong number of arguments for overloaded function 'new_Spam'. I don't want to pass any path parameters to this method. I want to assume the location is fixed at /files/xml/test.xml. How can I load a XDocument know this? • cygwin sed substitution against commands in history

  I couldn't find an answer for this exact problem, so I'll ask it. I'm working in Cygwin and want to reference previous commands using !n notation, e.g., if command 5 was which ls, then !5 runs the same command. The problem is when trying to do substitution, so running: !5:s/which \([a-z]\)/\1/ should just run ls, or whatever the argument was for which for command number 5. I've tried several ways of doing this kind of substitution and get the same error: bash: :s/which \([a-z]*\)/\1/: substitution failed
