• MySQL installation question.

  I am far from a DBA and have a question. Recently I installed MySQL. On my machine C:\ is a 50GB partition of two mirrored 10k SAS drives. The remaining space on those drives is allocated to D:. I also have a SSD mounted as E:. When I installed MySQL, I installed it to E:\ assuming that that is where the database information would be held since I had installed it there. I am now seeing C:\ProgramData\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.1\data\peq, peq being the name of my main database. Is my database being stored in C:\ and if so, how do I fix it to store the DB on the SSD?

• Best way to find updates in xml feed

  Hello all, I have an xml feed that I have to check periodically for updates. The xml consists of many elements and I'm looking to figure it out which is the best (and probably faster) way to find out which elements suffered updates from last time I've checked. What I think of is to check first the lastBuildDate for modifications and if it differs from the previous one to start parse the xml again. This would involve keeping each element with all of its attributes in my database. But each element can have different number of attributes as well as other nested elements. So if it would be to store each element in my database what would be the best way to keep them ? That's why I'm asking for your help :) Thank you.

  Given an object X; I want this object to have an image. The image must be stored in the database. I can't store the path, the actual image must be in the database. My question can be answered by answering the following subquestions: a). What type of field should I put in the database? (e.g VARCHAR) b) What type of object should I use for storing and manipulating the image (at an object layer)? (e.g java.awt.Image) c) How do I create an object of the type selected (answer of question b) from the data obtained from the database? d) How do I save an object of the type selected (answer of question b) to the database? e) How do I draw the image on a web page? • iPhone – Best method to import/drawing UI graphic elements? CGContextDrawPDFPage?

  Hello, What is the best way to use the custom UI graphics on the iPhone? I've come across CGContextDrawPDFPage and Panic's Shrinkit. Should I be using storing my vector ui graphics as PDF's and loading them using CGContextDrawPDFPage to draw them. I did previously asked what way Apple store their UI graphics and was answered crushed png. The options as I see it, but I would really want to know what technique other people use. This question is for vector graphics only. Looking for what is standard / most effective / most efficient. PNG (bitmapped image) Custom UIView drawing code (generated from Opacity) PDF (I've not used this method, is it with CGContextDrawPDFPage?) Many thanks Ross

  Hi everyone, In Linux. There is an srand() function, where you supply a seed and it will guarantee the same sequence of pseudorandom numbers in subsequent calls to the random() function afterwards. Lets say, I want to store this pseudo random sequence by remembering this seed value. Furthermore, let's say I want the 100 thousandth number in this pseudo random sequence later. One way, would be to supply the seed number using srand(), and then calling random() 100 thousand times, and remembering this number. Is there a better way of skipping all 99,999 other numbers in the pseudo random list and directly getting the 100 thousandth number in the list. thanks, m

  I have a method(say method1) that writes to database(sqlserver)and another method(say method2) that tries to access the same database after some time and updates the data row that was created by method1. The problem arises when method1 fails to access db due to the LAN being disconnected (this is not an exception this is a scenario that will definitely arise in my software, getting into details will make the question too complex) if method1 fails to access db method2 cannot work. What I want to do is to make method1 store values to local db instead of server if the LAN is disconnected and as soon as it enters value in local db the application should start trying to access the server after ever 10-15 seconds. What should I use timer or create a new thread?

• Tracking fitness in a genetic algorithm

  I'm still hacking on my old ruby for the undead post (I know, I know, stop trying to bring the post back from the dead Chuck). But the code has gotten a little out of hand and now I'm working on a genetic algorithm to create the ultimate battle of living and dead with the fitness being how long the battle lasts. So, I've got the basics of it down; how to adjust attributes of the game and how to acquire the fitness of a solution, what I can't figure out is how to store the fitness so that I know when I've tried a combination before. I've not been able to find much genetic code to look at let alone code that I can read well enough to tell what's going on. Does anyone have an idea how this is normally done or just simply an algorithm that could help point me in the right direction?

  Hi, I would like to construct a hash table that looks up keys in sequences (strings) of bytes ranging from 1 to 15 bytes. I would like to store an integer value, so I imagine an array for hashing would suffice. I'm having difficulty conceptualizing how to construct a hash function such that given the key would give an index into the array. Any assistance would be much appreiated. The maximum number of entries in the hash is: 4081*15 + 4081*14 + ... 4081 = 4081((15*(16))/2) = 489720. So for example: int table[489720]; int lookup(unsigned char *key) { int index = hash(key); return table[index]; } How can I compute hash(key). I'd preferably like to get a perfect hash function. • SQlite: Column format for unix timestamp; Integer types

  Original problem: What is the right column format for a unix timestamp? The net is full of confusion: some posts claim SQLite has no unsigned types - either whatsoever, or with exception of the 64bit int type (but there are (counter-)examples that invoke UNSIGNED INTEGER). The data types page mentions it only in a bigint example. It also claims there is a 6-byte integer but doesn't give a name for it. Of course standard INTEGER being 4-byte signed signed stores unix timestamps as negative numbers. I've heard that some systems return 64-bit timestamps too. OTOH I'm not too fond of wasting 4 bytes to store 1 extra bit (top bit of timestamp), and even if I have to pick a bigger data format, I'd rather go for the 6-byte one. I've even seen a post that claims SQLite unix timestamp is of type REAL... Complete problem: Could someone please clarify that mess?

  My application is been live from 6 months. The application is host on jboss 7.1 server. From last few days I am finding numerous problem of hanging of jboss server. Though I restart the jboss server again, it does not invoke. I need to restart the server machine itself. Can anyone please let me know what could be the cause of these problems and the workable resolutions or any suggestion ? • My C# and DLL Data Woes

  Hey guys, I'm a very beginner C# coder. So, if I get some of the terms incorrect, please be easy on me. I'm trying to see if it is possible to pull data from a DLL. I did some research and found that you can store application resources within a DLL. What I couldn't find, was the information to tell me how to do that. There is a MS article that explains how to access resources within a satellite DLL, but I honestly don't know if that is what I'm looking for. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms165653.aspx I did try some of the codes involved, but there are some "FileNotFoundExceptions" going on. The rest of the DLL information is showing up: classes, objects, etc. I just added the DLL as a resource in my Visual Studio Project and added it with "using".   Hi, I'm working on a project for my A level. It involves finding the maximum flow of a network, and I'm using javascript. I have a 2D array, with values in the array representing a distance between the two points. An example of the array: 0 2 2 0 0 0 1 2 0 0 0 2 0 0 0 0 I think I need to use a recursive technique to find a path; below is some pseudocode, assuming that the array is 4x4. a is (0,0), b is (3,3). function search(a,b) from a to b if element(i,j) != 0 then store value of element search(j,3) I was wondering if that was the right construction for a depth first search.   Hi, I'm developing an application in Rails and want the user to be able to signup and provide their card details on one form. I'm using the Braintree API and their transparent redirect, which means that the form data is posted directly to Braintree. How can I store and later retrieve the non-payment related information provided by the user from that form e.g. account name, username?   I am writing a C# application which allows users to store emails in a MS SQL Server database. Many times, multiple users will be copied on an email from a customer. If they all try to add the same email to the database, I want to make sure that the email is only added once. MD5 springs to mind as a way to do this. I don't need to worry about malicious tampering, only to make sure that the same email will map to the same hash and that no two emails with different content will map to the same hash. My question really boils down to how one would combine multiple fields into one MD5 (or other) hash value. Some of these fields will have a single value per email (e.g. subject, body, sender email address) while others will have multiple values (varying numbers of attachments, recipients). I want to develop a way of uniquely identifying an email that will be platform and language independent (not based on serialization). Any advice?

  Hello, I am building an iPhone app interface and I know the dpi has to be 163, but when it comes to the size of the file, I was looking through all the recommendations and found 2 different answers... Does anyone know what size should i set the Photoshop file at? The answers I have so far are: "The screen on the iPhone is 480×320, minus the 20-pixel status bar (making a 460×320 working screen size). The screen shots on the App Store should not include the status bar." "400 x 320 or 960 x 640 (iPhone 4) You must also consider the landscape mode (320 x 400 and 640 x 960)" I would really appreciate the answer. Thanks!

• Display MySQL BLOB'd image on webpage without separate script (PHP)

  So I've got some images stored in a MySQL database as BLOB's (I know it's better to just store the directory and do it that way, but this is what I need to do for now) and I need to display them on a webpage. Now, I know how to make a script and give it an image header and pull the img src from there, but I have a lot of images from different places for different uses, so I'd have to make a ton of these scripts and I'd rather not clutter up my files like that. Anyway, does anyone know of a function or something I can use to display the image that will run on the same page?

  Hi, Dabbling with creating an installer with inno setup- but wondering: What are the pros and cons of using registry keys (windows program) vs. .ini files that sit within the program folder? If I store all my user settings in .ini files, the entire program can be removed by deleting the folder. With registry keys i'd have to create an uninstaller / remove the key manually. Why is it that most commercial applications use registry values? I know from brief use of Macs that most programs are drag and drop. Are one of the major reasons because of the lack of a registry key in mac OS?

  I would like my iPhone app to allow the input, display and storage of currency amounts using the appropriate symbol ($, €, £, ¥, etc) for the user. Would NSNumberFormatter do everything I need? What happens when a user switches their locale and these amounts (dollars, yen, etc.) are stored as NSDecimalNumbers. I assume, to be safe, it's necessary to somehow capture the locale at the time of entry and then the currency symbol and store them in my instance along with the NSDecimalNumber ivar so they can be unwrapped and displayed appropriately down the road should the user changed their locale since the time when the item was created? Sorry, I have little localization experience so hoping for a couple quick pointers before diving in. Lastly, any insight on how to you handle this kind of input given the limitations of the iPhone's keyboards?

• Hash of unique value = unique hash?

  Theoretically does hashing a unique value yield a unique value? Let's say I have a DB table with 2 columns: id and code. id is an auto-incrementing int and code is a varchar. If I do ... $code = sha1($id); ... and then store $code into the same row as $id. Will my code column be unique as well? What about if I append the current time? eg: $code = sha1($id . time()); Thanks.

• Storing hierarchical (parent/child) data in Python/Django: MPTT alternative?

  I'm looking for a good way to store and use hierarchical (parent/child) data in Django. I've been using django-mptt, but it seems entirely incompatible with my brain - I end up with non-obvious bugs in non-obvious places, mostly when moving things around in the tree: I end up with inconsistent state, where a node and its parent will disagree on their relationship. My needs are simple: Given a node: find its root find its ancestors find its descendants With a tree: easily move nodes (ie. change parent) My trees will be smallish (at most 10k nodes over 20 levels, generally much much smaller, say 10 nodes with 1 or 2 levels). I have to think there has to be an easier way to do trees in python/django. Are there other approaches that do a better job of maintaining consistency?

• setting a timeout using a manually created forms authentication ticket

  The constructors for manually creating FormsAuthenticationTicket objects force us to set an "expiration" value, and this value overrides the "timeout" setting in web.config in my tags, which is not what I want, because now the user doesn't timeout. The "session" just expires at the given time. I need to manually create my ticket for UserData reasons, and it is just the way I decided to build my app. I guess I could spend a whole lot of time and redo the way my app. authorizes, and store the "userdata" elsewhere... but this seems extremely tedious for something so small.. Is there anyway to manually create an Auth Ticket and still maintain timeout settings?! And by timeout, I mean resetting the timer on user activity. Not a fixed timeout! Please help!
