• Soft Shadows in Raytracing 3D to 2D

  Hello: I wish to implement soft shadows produced by area lights in my raytracer. I'm having trouble generating the random samples. So I have a scene in which I have an area light (represented as a circle) whose world (x,y,z) coordinates of the center are given, the radius is given, the normal of the plane on which the circle lies is given, as well as the color and attenuation factors. The sampling scheme I wish to use is the following: generate samples on the quadrilateral that encompasses the circle and discard points outside the circle until the required number of samples within the circle have been found. I'm having trouble understanding how I can transform the 3D coordinates of the center of the circle to its 2D representation (I don't think I can assume that the projection of the circle is on the x-y axis and thus just get rid of the z-component). I think the plane normal information should be used but I'm not sure how. Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

  Im getting this exception in the protected virtual void SendPropertyChanged(String propertyName) { if ((this.PropertyChanged != null)) { this.PropertyChanged(this, new PropertyChangedEventArgs(propertyName)); <---- HERE !!! } } of one recently table association i created, there lots of same associations around the database, and this happened in the 4 specific tables i added. Its 1...* relationship and association is Primary Table - Id (identity auto generated) Foreign PId column int not null. I just dont get it....Im using SqlMetal for generation, i regenerated the schema, rebuild, same. This is causing while inserting row in DevExpress XtraGrid, but i dont think this should be issue, same control with same functionality but for different tables works ok. I use grid's event for append value in a property when the entity creating. I disabled this but same again. Recreated the association. No change, exception occurs. Any ideas?

• EF4, MVC 3, Azure and Code First or Traditional

  I am planning to build a web application using ASP MVC3 that runs on Azure with a SQL Azure back end. I would like to use the Microsoft stack and have no plans to ever change to another stack. I am looking into the use of WCF and WF but that would be in the future. I looked at the traditional and Code First approach to using Entity Framework but I can't see if there is any advantage in using one or the other approach. Sure they each have advantages but for me I don't care if my classes do inherit from EF classes. All I want is to find the most efficient solution. Can anyone out there give me some advice as to which approach might be the best. thanks very much Richard

• Invalid receiver type 'NSUInteger'

  I have a Core Data entity whose header file looks like this: @interface MyEntity : NSManagedObject { } @property (nonatomic, retain) NSNumber * index; @end And it's implementation file looks like this: @implementation MyEntity @dynamic index; @end Now, I have a piece of code that looks like this: NSArray* selectedObects = [myEntityArrayController selectedObjects]; NSUInteger theIndex = [[[selectedObects objectAtIndex:0] index] unsignedIntegerValue]; The 'myEntityArrayController' object is a NSArrayController which manages all entities of MyEntity. This code executes correctly, however XCode always gives the warning "Invalid receiver type 'NSUInteger'" for the last line of code. For some reason, XCode thinks that the index method returns a NSUInteger. I'm not sure why it thinks this, because 'objectAtIndex' returns an object of type 'id'. I've cleaned the project several times, and these warnings have hung around for a while. Any suggestions are appreciated.

• What's the best JSF implementation?

  Hey everyone, I currently have a medium size Java web application sitting on top of Spring MVC. As much as I like (no sarcasm) coding straight HTML, CSS and JS, it's not possible for me to develop as fast as I'd like. I'm looking at different RAD frameworks to speed up my development. I'm looking at JSF implementations and component libraries, Flex, GWT and a few others. As of now, Apache MyFaces (with ICEFaces) seems to be the front runner in my mind, but I'm curious to find out what you all think of that specific implementation and if the Sun implementation is any better? What's important to me is something that is stable, has an active community and that it doesn't look like there is another technology in the near future that is going to eclipse JSF (which would drive me to use a different RAD framework). • creating new usercntrols at runtime in ASP.NET MVC

  Hi everyone, My situation is that the user is creating an entity on my site which contains the particlars of the driectors of that company, name address etc.. The Director form is a separate user control with the appropriate textboxes etc. At run time we don't know how many of these directors there will be so I need one to be able to use something like an "ADD DIRECTOR" or "DELETE DIRECTOR" button which will present or delete the another usercontrol to add the additional director. Currently I am trying to make this happen within a pane of the JQuery Accordion control. I have looked many places for how to do this but to no avail. Can anyone tell me where I might find some inforamation about how I can do this? All the best Paul

• What technical skills needed for algorithmic trading, HFT, etc?

  I'm interested in getting into developing trading systems, black box, HFT, etc. My primary experience is with C# and .Net (7 years). I've also done some sockets programming. I have some experience in finance working on analysis applications (2 years). My goal is to move into developing automated trading systems for a hedge fund, bank, etc. Is there any way to learn the skills needed for this without somehow getting the job first? I've looked at the open source tradelink, IB interactive brokerage, etc. I'm playing around with this framework, and may hook it up and do some paper trading. However, I'm not sure if this has much relationship with how a well-funded entity would be conducting a high-level automated trading operation. I.e. would the tools and frameworks they prefer be a totally different skill-set? Also wondering if I need to learn C++ and/or Java for these types of apps.

• Does RVM "failover" to another ruby instance on error?

  Have a strange problem in that I have a Rake task that seems to be using multiple versions of Ruby. When one fails, it seems to try another one. Details MacBook running 10.6.5 rvm 1.1.0 Rubies: 1.8.7-p302, ree-1.8.7-2010.02, ruby-1.9.2-p0 Rake 0.8.7 Gem 1.3.7 Veewee (provisioning Virtual Machines using Opcode.com, Vagrant and Chef) I'm not entirely sure the specific details of the error matter, but since it might be an issue with Veewee itself. So, what I'm trying to do is build a new box base on a veewee definition. The command fails with an error about a missing method- but what's interesting is how it fails. Errors I managed to figure out that if I only have one Ruby installed with RVM, it just fails. If I have more than one Ruby install, it fails at the same place, but execution seems to continue in another interpreter. Here are two different clipped console outputs. I've clipped them for size. The full outputs of each error are available as a gist. My first try was with <rich:modalPanel id="mod1"> <ui:include src="#{mybean.generateURL()"/> </rich:modalPanel> but it just throws me a 404 page not found error, typing the generated URL directly into the address bar works perfectly fine. Does anyone know what's causing the problem , or what's the correct way to do this? The system is running on seam/richfaces. Thanks!

  Hi, I am looking for a easy to use and deploy sql type database i can ship with a desktop application. This will be a small application user's can download from my website. In the vb6 days, access was the common database for small desktop apps, what is my option these days? Looking at SQL CE it seems to have a quite a few limitations such as count(distinct) etc SQL express needs to be installed and running as a service (could i include the SQL express deployments in my deployment so the user doesn't even know its been installed? I assume size would then be an issue) SQL 2005/2008 is not an option due to size and licensing restrictions. I would like to use c#, wpf and entity framework. What would seem to be the best options based on your knowledge and experience? Thanks

• ORA-22835 using JPA (Buffer too small)

  I am trying to persist an Entity with a @Lob annotated String field. The content of that fiels if bigger than the 40k buffer size limit. The first problem I had was related to the setString method used internally by the JPA implementation (Hibernate in my case) and the Oracle JDBC Driver. This problem was solved adding <property name="hibernate.connection.SetBigStringTryClob" value="true"/> to my persistence.xml file. Then, the error changed to a ORA-22835 error (the buffer is too small). ¿Is there any way that JPA solves this problem without going to a low-level implementation? ¿Any suggestions?

• How to import classes into other classes within the same file in Python

  I have the file below and it is part of a django project called projectmanager, this file is projectmanager/projects/models.py . Whenever I use the python interpreter to import a Project just to test the functionality i get a name error for line 8 that FileRepo() cannot be found. How Can I import these classes correctly? Ideally what I am looking for is each Project to contain multiple FileRepos which each contain and unknown number of files. • Best practices for fixed-width processing in .NET

  I'm working a .NET web service that will be processing a text file with a relatively long, multilevel record format. Each record in the file represents a different entity; the record contains multiple sub-types. (The same record format is currently being processed by a COBOL job, if that gives you a better picture of what we're looking at). I've created a class structure (a DATA DIVISION if you will) to hold the input data. My question is, what best practices have you found for processing large, complex fixed-width files in .NET? My general approach will be to read the entire line into a string and then parse the data from the string into the classes I've created. But I'm not sure whether I'll get better results working with the characters in the string as an array, or with the string itself. I guess that's the specific question, string vs. char[], but I would appreciate any other pointers anyone has. Thanks.

  In my code I am using JSF - Front end , EJB-Middile Tier and JPA connect to DB.Calling the EJB using the Webservices.Using MySQL as DAtabase. I have created the Voter table in which I need to insert the record. I ma passing the values from the JSF to EJB, it is working.I have created JPA controller class (which automatcally generates the persistence code based on the data base classes) Ex: getting the entity manager etc., em = getEntityManager(); em.getTransaction().begin(); em.persist(voter); em.getTransaction().commit(); I have created the named query also: @NamedQuery(name = "Voter.insertRecord", query = "INSERT INTO Voter v values v.voterID = :voterID,v.password = :password,v.partSSN = :partSSN, v.address = :address, v.zipCode = :zipCode,v.ssn = :ssn, v.vFirstName = :vFirstName,v.vLastName = :vLastName,v.dob = :dob"), But still not able to insert the record?   I'm working on a new presenation component for one of our applications. I am building a Custom WPF Control that just has a DocumentViewer in it and hosting that CC in a Windows Forms application with an ElementHost. I'm using Visual Studio 2008 with C#. I have customized everything through the XAML to give it the look and feel that integrates it perfecting into our application, but one thing remains... If you press CTRL+P the print dialog still comes up. I'm at a complete loss as to how to disable that fuction. The use of this CC is to allow the users to pull up and view the Manuals for the systems installed at that site, but we don't want them to accidently print them (100s of pages). Please help, -G

Below is my code which produces an error(can't implicitly convert a generic list of anonymous types to a generic list of type TBLPROMOTION): List<TBLPROMOTION> promotionInfo = null; promotionInfo = (from p in matches orderby p.PROMOTION_NM descending select new { p.EFFECTIVE_DT, p.EXPIRE_DT, p.IS_ACTIVE, p.PROMOTION_DESC, p.PROMOTION_ID, p.PROMOTION_NM }).ToList(); What would be the best way to accomplish this. • Using a DataSet instead of custom business entities in soa and n-tier architecture

  I’m working on a large and a high volume transactional enterprise application which has been designed using n-tire application architecture .And it was developed in the .NET platform utilizing C#,VB.NEt, Framework 3.5, ObjectDataSources, DataSet, WCF, asp.net update panel, JavaScript ,JSON, 3rd Party tools. The application is supposed to accomplish a really scalable / easily maintained / robust application / integrations, and to make sure that my services are created using a format that can be understood by other systems. The problem is, this application is about 70% complete but now I was wondering if the following would cause us future issues, I’m using a DataSet and a DataTable to (get /set) the data (form /to) the stored procedure in the database using the ObjectDataSources and was wondering if this would prevent my application from achieving the above goals. Actually, I am not anti-OO. I write lots of classes for different purposes, but I didn’t use the entity objects(custom business entities) instead of the previous way because I have a large database that may contain 50 tables and I was just afraid to create entities for each table and then in the future if I need to change the schema of the database, it might cause a huge affect on the application ?

So I have in my sollution: ClassLibrary with my Domain (for NHibernate) and DTO objetcs Class library to make a SessionFactory adn Factories in my Project Asp.Net MVC 2 Application So, I download AutoMapper to transform Domain objects in DTO and add a the code to do this in Application_Start of global.asax. When I run in VisualStudio (by pressing F5) it works fine and my dtos are into the view, So when I publish this in IIS, I get a security exception =( in first line of conversion: Mapper.CreateMap(); <--- this line throw exception Mapper.CreateMap(); System.Security.SecurityException: Failed request for the permission of type 'System.Security.Permissions.ReflectionPermission, mscorlib, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089'. What can I do to resolve this to work in IIS ? When I will publish it on web server, the error will get too :( Thanks Cheers

  Hi, We have a system in which we must use pessimistic locking in one entity. We are using hibernate, so we use LockMode.UPGRADE. However, it does not lock. The tables are InnoDB We have checked that locking works correctly in the database (5.0.32), so this bug http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=18184 seems to be no problem. We have checked that datasource includes the autoCommit = false parameter. We have checked that the SQL hibernate (version 3.2) generates includes the " FOR UPDATE". Thanks,

• JSF Custom EL function works only on the first load of the page.

  I created a ( JSP-based) custom EL function to use in the rendered tag. The function will return a boolean to decide if a page component needs to be rendered on a page or not. I import it onto the jsp page using <%@ taglib uri = "/WEB-INF/mine.tld" prefix = "g" %. Everything works perfect on the first load of the jsp page. Once a button is clicked, the form submits and then I am getting errors like 'No ClassLoaders found for: the class which implements my EL function' and 'Function not found'. What is going on here? What will be a fix?
