• Move site to new domain divided by language across subdomains

  I managed to find a nice domain for a fairly fledgling site of mine that actually hasn't been parked by scumbag squatters. Given the upcoming move I'm thinking I'd take the opportunity to split the content across subdomains according to language, much like wikipedia for example: current: www.old-domain.com/en/subject # English www.old-domain.com/subjecto # Spanish (default so not locale in url) proposed en.new-domain.com/subject es.new-domain.com/subjecto The advantage of doing this is a fairly competitive keyword such that I may wish to put a copy of my application on a Spanish slice in order to gain a few serp's. Also pure vanity. Google's webmaster tools allows me to move to the new domain and I can add the root domain and the subdomains but forward to only one. I'll 301 from the old domain appropriately but is there anything I should know about webmaster tools in this respect where effectively I'm moving to two addresses? (Feel free to dissuade me from doing this if it's a bad idea in comments.)

• Enabling Multi-touch features of the Apple Magic Mouse on Ubuntu 12.04

  I want to write a simple app that uses Apple's Magic Trackpad, nothing special, just so that it recognizes atleast one gesture. The thing is, Ubuntu itself doesnt really recognize this device. I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 and by default the device works with 1 finger, but without tap-click or doubletap, 3 fingers move the window and 3 finger spread makes it fullscreen. I managed to enable 2 finger scrolling with "xinput set-prop 8 'Two-Finger Scrolling' 1 1", but thats about it. No other gestures work, ginn doesnt start, giesview detects the device but doesnt respond to any of the gestures, and touchegg doesnt start either. I tried example apps from qt that come with ubuntu but they dont work. So... what do i do? i tried using qt but all i get from the app is "Got touch without getting TouchBegin for id XX" what else can i use to get my app to work with multitouch devices?

• 3d environments and managing them on iOS

  I would like to start learning 3d game development and currently only develop 2d games. A few basic questions I am interested in are: What is used to create the 3d environments? Are they all done in e.g. Maya, Lightwave, 3d modeling software? What is the output format for these models and how are they manipulated in iOS? Is it all done using openGL(GL ES on iOS)? e.g a monster needs to be spawned in the game world. What coordinates are used? Are the concepts the same as 2d in terms of collision on the coordinates and movement on the coordinates of the game world? How are 3d games managed in iOS on the low available memory. (e.g. FPS games) Lastly, Can someone please recommend a good book that is up to date and can be applied to todays techniques. Thanks

• SOA Suite 11g (11.1.1.3): Creating a single server domain with SOA Suite and Oracle Service Bus func

  One of the major benefits of the latest version of the Oracle SOA products, SOA Suite 11gR1 PS2 (11.1.1.3) and Oracle Service Bus 11gR1 (11.1.1.3), is that both products depend on the same version of WebLogic Server 11g (10.3.3) and so can be installed in the same domain. If you are a developer building artifacts for both but with a laptop/desktop with limited resources then this is particularly useful, as you can install a single server domain (by default you get a domain with an admin server and multiple managed servers) which incorporates both sets of functionality. The viewlet below shows you how to go about creating such a single server domain, using the configuration wizard. Just click the Play button from the viewlet menu to start it. Note: As you have added all this functionality into a single server, it will take a few minutes to start up. As this is my first foray into the world of viewlets I’d be interested in your opinion as to whether you have found this useful and any tips/techniques for improving any future viewlets I may create.   Since upgrading to 12.10, switching on or attempting to mount one of my usb hard drives gives this error message: Error mounting system-managed device /dev/sdg1: Command-line `mount "/mnt/usb-ST350041_8AS_60CAFFFFFFFF-0:0-part1"' exited with non-zero exit status 32: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdg1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so dmesg | tail gives (inter alia): [ 1080.727830] sdg: sdg1 [ 1080.732003] sd 8:0:0:0: [sdg] Attached SCSI disk [ 1081.383633] FAT-fs (sdg1): Unrecognized mount option "x-gvfs-show" or missing value [ 1871.160973] sdg: sdg1 The drive cannot be mounted, but is recognized by the system as a "place". I am not a technical bod; I cannot take this further myself and any help would be much appreciated.

• Can't center dialog window above main window when using Glade (Quickly)

  I have a dialog opening when I press a button in my application and I want it to center above the application's main window, but I can't find a way to do this. I'm using Quickly (Python) and Glade. In Glade I've tried the following settings: Window Type = Popup Modal = Yes Window Position = Center on Parent But I simply can't get the behaviour I'm after. When using the "Window Type" option "Top level" the dialog opens in the center of the screen. When I use "Window Type" = "Popup" it opens in the very top left corner, with the window controls unaccessible. I know this must be a very basic setting but I've just started developing with GTK and Python so I obviously managed to miss this. Thanks for any advice! :)

  I run a Physical firewall at my residence. Call me paranoid, but I appreciate the added security. I have been working to get the VPN to work properly, but had until today not managed this. I worked with ensuring that the VPN configurations were correct, that the port filters were correct,  I could connect to the Firewall GUI, but never to the VPN. Turns out that in W7, if you add a key, it suddenly works.Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNELAdd DWORD(32-bit) - SendExtraRecord --> value 2 and voila, suddenly your presented with the login screen. I won't mention the specific vendor, as they don't have this listed in their fixes... but there are several venders where this is an issue. So, if you are having an issue connecting to an SSL VPN (web vpn) this might just be the solution that you need.

• Cloud hosting vs dedicated hosting: advantages and disadvantages

  I'm currently looking for a hosting company that can provide a very solid service with a 100% SLA. In the search both cloud hosting and managed dedicated hosting have come up. (I'd rather not manage the server myself as I'm still rather new to Linux.) I'm not sure if phrasing this as a "which is best" would make sense, but what advantages does cloud hosting have over dedicated server hosting? I need a reliable service above all else, and some elements of the application to be hosted will be relatively CPU intensive, although those spikes in CPU usage will be sporadic, so the hosting needs to be able to deal with that.

• Software centre and Evolution think I am offline using WICD to make wireless connection

  I upgraded to 11.10 yesterday. I use WICD to make the wireless connection because I have never managed to get network manager to make a wireless connection on any computer I have installed it on. But since 11.10 both Evolution and software centre are convinced I am offline even though I have a functional connection (I am using wifi now and both are reporting me offline, which I clearly am not). I am using an MSI WIND clone Advent 4211 B netbook. Network manager has never worked on this computer for wifi. WICD can make connection about 30% time (often returns BAD PASSWORD, first few attempts). XP of course works fine to make wifi connection. I have a I am happy to supply more information I just do not know what information might help. I have reported a bug against evolution

  I need dynamic dijkstra algorithm that can update itself when edge's cost is changed without a full recalculation. Full recalculation is not an option. I've tryed to "brew" my own implemantion with no success. I've also tryed to find on the Internet but found nothing. A link to an article explaining the algorithm or even it's name will be good.   Possible Duplicates: How to explain programming to a non-programmer? Getting non-programmers to understand the development process I was asked a question today that made me think. Here's a middle age person who apparently knows nothing about computers besides this specific application they use (I actually suggested to use Calculator, rather than hunt around the whole office for a hand-held one which had mysteriously vanished, and the fact that the computer could be used for such tasks was apparently news), asking me to explain what programming is about. In general. I tried, but am not sure I managed very well. But it got me thinking. What would be a good way to describe programming, or more generally speaking systems development, to a person like that? How have you responded being put in a similar situation?

  I'm using Samsung NP900X3C. I have problem with occasionally connecting to WIFI, with Ubuntu 12.10. Sometimes my computer could not connect to WIFI "blab", neither after reboot computer. Only solution is to restart WIFI hotspot. It's public WIFI, used by many users, that don't have that problem. • How long does an ext4 format take?

  The USB cable on my Iomega Prestige 1TB hard drive conked out a while back, and I've finally managed to get a new one. I removed the old NTFS file system because I use Windows maybe once a month, and then only for Windows-only activities. So I plug in the HDD to my laptop, and get it to start converting to ext4. Gparted is currently on the "create new ext4 file system" and has been for about 2 hours. Is this right? I know 1TB is fairly large, but the last time I did this, I'm pretty sure it was a fast(er) job.Can anybody shed some light on what's going on here?

My app it's a job approval system using J2EE / SPRING 3 Framework and Postgress DB to allow user to tracks the job,right through every step of the approval process. It is a fully managed, collaborative system that operates from a central server and is accessed by a standard internet browser. An user should be able to add an attach to a request or an approval step, so, I though to use Jackrabbit with Postgres database persistence manager. I took a look to this post: http://onjava.com/pub/a/onjava/2006/10/04/what-is-java-content-repository.html?page=1 It's really interesting but, I've some question about this kind of solution :- I seen that Jackrabbit standalone as a Derby database embedded solution for persistence, is it enough for a professional use of the repository with more than 50 request / days (with attachment) ? Is there a reason for which I should use another database manager for persistence instead of the default one ?

By now, readers of this column are quite familiar with Oracle AppAdvantage, a unified framework of middleware technologies, infrastructure and applications utilizing a pace layered approach to enterprise systems platforms. 1. Standardize and Consolidate core Enterprise Applications by removing invasive customizations, costly workarounds and the complexity that multiple instances creates. 2. Move business specific processes and applications to the Differentiate Layer, thus creating greater business agility with process extensions and best of breed applications managed by cross- application process orchestration. 3. The Innovate Layer contains all the business capabilities required for engagement, collaboration and intuitive decision making. This is the layer where innovation will occur, as people engage one another in a secure yet open and informed way. 4. Simplify IT by minimizing complexity, improving performance and lowering cost with secure, reliable and managed systems across the entire Enterprise. But what hasn’t been discussed is the pace layered architecture that Oracle AppAdvantage adopts. What is it, what are its origins and why is it relevant to enterprise scale applications and technologies? It’s actually a fascinating tale that spans the past 20 years and a basic understanding of it provides a wonderful context to what is evolving as the future of enterprise systems platforms. It all begins in 1994 with a book by noted architect Stewart Brand, of ’Whole Earth Catalog’ fame. In his 1994 book How Buildings Learn, Brand popularized the term ‘Shearing Layers’, arguing that any building is actually a hierarchy of pieces, each of which inherently changes at different rates. In 1997 he produced a 6 part BBC Series adapted from the book, in which Part 6 focuses on Shearing Layers. In this segment Brand begins to introduce the concept of ‘pace’. Brand further refined this idea in his subsequent book, The Clock of the Long Now, which began to link the concept of Shearing Layers to computing and introduced the term ‘pace layering’, where he proposes that: “An imperative emerges: an adaptive [system] has to allow slippage between the differently-paced systems … otherwise the slow systems block the flow of the quick ones and the quick ones tear up the slow ones with their constant change. Embedding the systems together may look efficient at first but over time it is the opposite and destructive as well.” In 2000, IBM architects Ian Simmonds and David Ing published a paper entitled A Shearing Layers Approach to Information Systems Development, which applied the concept of Shearing Layers to systems design and development. It argued that at the time systems were still too rigid; that they constrained organizations by their inability to adapt to changes. The findings in the Conclusions section are particularly striking: “Our starting motivation was that enterprises need to become more adaptive, and that an aspect of doing that is having adaptable computer systems. The challenge is then to optimize information systems development for change (high maintenance) rather than stability (low maintenance). Our response is to make it explicit within software engineering the notion of shearing layers, and explore it as the principle that systems should be built to be adaptable in response to the qualitatively different rates of change to which they will be subjected. This allows us to separate functions that should legitimately change relatively slowly and at significant cost from that which should be changeable often, quickly and cheaply.” The problem at the time of course was that this vision of adaptable systems was simply not possible within the confines of 1st generation ERP, which were conceived, designed and developed for standardization and compliance. It wasn’t until the maturity of open, standards based integration, and the middleware innovation that followed, that pace layering became an achievable goal. And Oracle is leading the way. Oracle’s AppAdvantage framework makes pace layering come alive by taking a strategic vision 20 years in the making and transforming it to a reality. It allows enterprises to retain and even optimize their existing ERP systems, while wrapping around those ERP systems three layers of capabilities that inherently adapt as needed, at a pace that’s optimal for the enterprise.
