• how to change gtk3 color scheme on ubuntu 13.04

  I am making the transition from windows 7 to ubuntu 13.04. I have ran ubuntu twice on my laptop and switched back to windows 7 namely becuase the orange and gray colors of ubuntu is just ugly. I know how to change ambiance to radiance but the gtk colors themselves SHOULD be customizable. I managed to do it once with 12.04 using kde's color manager but the thing wigged out on me. So please. is there a way to change 13.04's color scheme without downloading some theme that may or may not work? thank you.

• Network manager indicator missing

  I recently upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04. My first attempt failed, and I received an error stating that not all of the required packages were downloaded. Before (successfully) attempting again, I noticed that there was no longer a networking indicator in the upper panel. The indicator did not reappear with the installation of 12.04. To be clear, my wireless connection has experienced no problems, despite the missing indicator. Here are the solutions that I have found which did not work for me: Editing /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf and replacing [ifupdown] managed=false with =true. Reinstalling network-manager (via apt-get install --reinstall). I am currently running 12.04 on an Asus Eee PC 1005 HA, and I am new to seeking solutions through forums, so I apologize if I have neglected to provide some vital information about my hardware.

  So I wanted to switch to IDirect3DDevice9Ex, purely for the SetFrameLatency function, as fullscreen vsynced D3D seemed to produce noticable input lag. But then it tells me 'ha ha ha! now you can't use D3DPOOL_MANAGED!': Direct3D9: (ERROR) :D3DPOOL_MANAGED is not valid with IDirect3DDevice9Ex Is this really as unpleasant as it looks (when you're relying quite heavily on managed resources) - or is there a simple solution? If it really does mean manual management of everything (reloading all static textures, VBs, and IBs on a device reset), is it worth the hassle, will IDirect3DDevice9Ex bring enough benefit to make it worth writing a new resource manager? Starting to think I must be doing something wrong, due to this: Direct3D9: (ERROR) :Lock is not supported for textures allocated with POOL_DEFAULT unless they are marked D3DUSAGE_DYNAMIC. So if I put my (static) textures in POOL_DEFAULT, they need flagging as D3DUSAGE_DYNAMIC, just because I lock them once to load the data in?

  I'm just starting out with a Code-Quality-plugin development for my organization based on the recently released .NET Compiler Platform APIs (Roslyn APIs). I would like to know what are the most relevant possible ways that it could be used by the developer community apart from the usual IDE experience as answered in other questions. I was wondering the implications of opening up a compiler to general public and never came across anything "breakthrough", that could possibly add up to the value of IDE experiences. Is there any performance bottleneck for its implementation since the compiler itself is managed code?

• Wireless speed drops over time and doesn't get up if not reconnected

  I am using Ubuntu 12.10 64bit and I have a Asus PCE-N15 wireless card(in PCI-E slot). The problem is that first when I connect to my WiFi network the speed is just fine, and actually my link speed never drops, it shows a solid 150mb/s+ link speed and good signal. But the download and upload speeds drop dramatically after couple minutes of use and I have to reconnect to fix this. Network is type IEEE 802.11bgn and uses WPA2/AES encryption. I don't have similar problems on the windows side, and the network is working fine on every other device. iwconfig shows this: wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:"WLAN-AP" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: 00:1E:AB:05:EF:31 Bit Rate=300 Mb/s Tx-Power=20 dBm Retry long limit:7 RTS thr=2347 B Fragment thr:off Encryption key:off Power Management:off Link Quality=61/70 Signal level=-49 dBm Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:2 Missed beacon:0 So the question is: Is there a way to fix this?   I purchased a server for the sole purpose of familiarizing myself with the CLI so I don't get royally screwed when I enter a real development environment. However, I have some questions. I've managed to SSH into my server, all is fine and dandy, installed LAMP too which went flawlessly. Now I'm wondering, the more changes I do, the more cluttered my server will become. Can I revert changes? I don't want to keep customizing things and installing things and just having a cluttered server overall. Where can I track changes to my system?

• Drawing a random x,y grid of objects within a prespective

  I'm wrapping my head around OpenGL ES 2.0 and I think I'm trying to do something very simple, but I think the math may be eluding me. I created a simple, flat-ish cylinder in Blender that is 2 units in diameter. I want to create an arbitrary grid of these edge to edge (think of a checker board). I'm using a 3D perspective with GLKit: CGSize size = [[self view] bounds].size; _projectionMatrix = GLKMatrix4MakePerspective(GLKMathDegreesToRadians(45.0f), size.width/size.height, 0.1f, 100.0f); So, I managed to manually get all of these cylinders drawn on the screen just fine. However, I would like to understand how I can programmatically "fit" all of these cylinders on the screen at the same time given the camera location, screen size, cylinder diameter, and the number of rows/columns. So the net effect is that for small grids (i.e., 5x5) the objects are closer to the camera, but for large grids (i.e., 30x30) the objects are farther away. In either case, all of the cylinders are visible.

• How do I dynamically reload content files?

  Is there a relatively simple way to dynamically reload content files, such as effect files? I know I can do the following: Detect change of file Run content pipeline to rebuild that specific file Unload ALL content that was loaded Load all content And use double references to reference content files. The problem is with step 3 (and step 2 isn't that nice either). I need to unload everything because if I have model Hero.x which references Model.fx effect, and I change the Model.fx file, I need to reload the Hero.x file which will then call LoadExternalReference on Model.fx. Has someone managed to make this work without rewriting the whole ContentManager (and every ContentReader) and tracking calls to LoadExternalReference?

  I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 with Unity and Gnome3, however I don't have a screen hooked up anymore. I have installed x11vnc and run it with "-create" so that it will create a new X11 session, however when I VNC to it, the menu bar, window borders, etc are missing, windows are ordered based on creation time, and cannot be resized. Now, I don't really care if I end up with Ubuntu or Gnome's window manager, as long as this doesn't mess up my normal desktop stuff if I should happen to hook a monitor up again, and I'm not even attached to x11vnc if someone can point me to a good complete tutorial using something else, but I've been trying vino and tightvnc and rdp and x11vnc is the only one I've managed to get this far.

I managed to add another "paddle" object with box2d body, but i can seam to be able to make the code to move the second "paddle" body. Can anyone direct me how to do it? Is there a way to move a "b2_staticBody" box 2d object? i have tried, but i can only move it when i use "b2_dynamicBody" if i used "b2_staticBody" i can move it at all.

• My ASUS U32U with fresh Xubuntu install shows a black screen 50-80% of the startups

  I have recently installed Ubuntu 12.10 with Xubuntu-package on my ASUS U32U notebook (Radeon HD 6320 GPU). The issue I have is that more often than not, after the GRUB-select screen I get a black screen, and three times total white lines (kind of) flashes very quickly (with maybe 5 seconds between each flash). I'm not even able to get to the login-screen (nor the Xubuntu loading screen). At first I thought it was simply me having installed something dumb or messed up some settings, but even after reformatting the partition and installing ubuntu again, the problem remains. Before I formatted it xfce4's window manager wouldn't start either, but it does now (when I am able to see anything). I can access the virual consoles (ctrl+alt+f1), but I can't see anything, but I've managed to shutdown the computer by using it (sudo shutdown -h now).

• Wireless does not work anymore after software update with Ubuntu 12.10 on a Dell Latitude E6230

  I just installed Ubuntu 12.10 on my DELL Latitude E6230, on first boot wifi worked properly but when I updated the software it stopped working. I can't figure out the problem... The wireless network controller is a Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11b/g/n Wireless Lan Controller (rev 01) "lshw -class network" gives, for the above controller: *-network UNCLAIMED description: Network controller product: BCM4313 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller vendor: Broadcom Corporation physical id: 0 bus info: pci@0000:02:00.0 version: 01 width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list configuration: latency=0 resources: memory:f7d00000-f7d03fff After reading the answer to another similar question, I edited the file NetworkManager.conf to make "managed=true", but that did not make any difference, it is as if the wireless adapter were not there. In the "Network" setting window, I only see "Wired" and "Network proxy". Wireless has just disappeared: rfkill list all 0: hci0: Bluetooth Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no and that's it! Nothing about the wireless controller... Any suggestions?

• GRUB2 panic: "No such partition"

  I managed to install 10.04 on a system that already has 8.04 (separate partitions, of course). It also installed GRUB2 onto the MBR. After discovering that there is no menu.lst anymore, I edited /etc/grub.d/40_custom to point to where my other OS partitions are: menuentry "Ubuntu 8.04" { set root=(hd0,0) linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-28-generic initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-28-generic } menuentry "Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit" { set root=(hd0,2) chainloader (hd0,2)+1 } GRUB2 displays the menu with those entries but when I select any of them, it refuses to load them, saying "No such partition". I know the partitions are there, as 10.04's "Disk Utility" sees them without any problem. How do I get GRUB2 to recognize them?

• Skype no sound on Kubuntu 13.10

  I just performed a fresh install of Kubuntu 13.10 on my machine. Everything is working great except for Skype. I cannot get any form of audio playback in Skype. In the sound settings panel I get a bunch of different sound sources, none of which work! At the moment I have set it to "sysdefault (unknown)" I installed it using the deb package found on the official website. My phonon backend is using phonon-gstreamer. • Taking the Plunge - or Dipping Your Toe - into the Fluffy IAM Cloud by Paul Dhanjal (Simeio Solutions)

  In our last three posts, we’ve examined the revolution that’s occurring today in identity and access management (IAM). We looked at the business drivers behind the growth of cloud-based IAM, the shortcomings of the old, last-century IAM models, and the new opportunities that federation, identity hubs and other new cloud capabilities can provide by changing the way you interact with everyone who does business with you. In this, our final post in the series, we’ll cover the key things you, the enterprise architect, should keep in mind when considering moving IAM to the cloud. Invariably, what starts the consideration process is a burning business need: a compliance requirement, security vulnerability or belt-tightening edict. Many on the business side view IAM as the “silver bullet” – and for good reason. You can almost always devise a solution using some aspect of IAM. The most critical question to ask first when using IAM to address the business need is, simply: is my solution complete? Typically, “business” is not focused on the big picture. Understandably, they’re focused instead on the need at hand: Can we be HIPAA compliant in 6 months? Can we tighten our new hire, employee transfer and termination processes? What can we do to prevent another password breach? Can we reduce our service center costs by the end of next quarter? The business may not be focused on the complete set of services offered by IAM but rather a single aspect or two. But it is the job – indeed the duty – of the enterprise architect to ensure that all aspects are being met. It’s like remodeling a house but failing to consider the impact on the foundation, the furnace or the zoning or setback requirements. While the homeowners may not be thinking of such things, the architect, of course, must. At Simeio Solutions, the way we ensure that all aspects are being taken into account – to expose any gaps or weaknesses – is to assess our client’s IAM capabilities against a five-step maturity model ranging from “ad hoc” to “optimized.” The model we use is similar to Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) developed by the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University. It’s based upon some simple criteria, which can provide a visual representation of how well our clients fair when evaluated against four core categories: ·         Program Governance ·         Access Management (e.g., Single Sign-On) ·         Identity and Access Governance (e.g., Identity Intelligence) ·         Enterprise Security (e.g., DLP and SIEM) Often our clients believe they have a solution with all the bases covered, but the model exposes the gaps or weaknesses. The gaps are ideal opportunities for the cloud to enter into the conversation. The complete process is straightforward: 1.    Look at the big picture, not just the immediate need – what is our roadmap and how does this solution fit? 2.    Determine where you stand with respect to the four core areas – what are the gaps? 3.    Decide how to cover the gaps – what role can the cloud play? Returning to our home remodeling analogy, at some point, if gaps or weaknesses are discovered when evaluating the complete impact of the proposed remodel – if the existing foundation wouldn’t support the new addition, for example – the owners need to decide if it’s time to move to a new house instead of trying to remodel the old one. However, with IAM it’s not an either-or proposition – i.e., either move to the cloud or fix the existing infrastructure. It’s possible to use new cloud technologies just to cover the gaps. Many of our clients start their migration to the cloud this way, dipping in their toe instead of taking the plunge all at once. Because our cloud services offering is based on the Oracle Identity and Access Management Suite, we can offer a tremendous amount of flexibility in this regard. The Oracle platform is not a collection of point solutions, but rather a complete, integrated, best-of-breed suite. Yet it’s not an all-or-nothing proposition. You can choose just the features and capabilities you need using a pay-as-you-go model, incrementally turning on and off services as needed. Better still, all the other capabilities are there, at the ready, whenever you need them. Spooling up these cloud-only services takes just a fraction of the time it would take a typical organization to deploy internally. SLAs in the cloud may be higher than on premise, too. And by using a suite of software that’s complete and integrated, you can dramatically lower cost and complexity. If your in-house solution cannot be migrated to the cloud, you might consider using hardware appliances such as Simeio’s Cloud Interceptor to extend your enterprise out into the network. You might also consider using Expert Managed Services. Cost is usually the key factor – not just development costs but also operational sustainment costs. Talent or resourcing issues often come into play when thinking about sustaining a program. Expert Managed Services such as those we offer at Simeio can address those concerns head on. • Cannot access BIOS on a Lenovo U410

  I recently took a step into Linux on my Lenovo Idea pad U410; after a couple hours I managed to get it installed with the drivers. However now I no longer have the ability to access the BIOS. I tried the usual FN+F2, F2,F1,Del,Tab,F12,F11; all to no avail. I was wondering is there something different to be done running Ubuntu? I know that the BIOS would generally not be affected by the OS. Does anyone have any suggestions?
