• Determining which classes would benefit most from unit testing?

  I am working on a project where we have only 13% of code coverage with our unit tests. I would like to come up with a plan to improve that but by focusing first on the areas where increasing coverage would bring the greatest value. This project is in C#, we're using VS 2008 and TFS 2008 and out unit tests are written using MSTest. What methodology should I use to determine which classes we should tackle first? Which metrics (code or usage) should I be looking at (and how can I get those metrics if this is not obvious)?

• Avoiding string copying in Lua

  Say I have a C program which wants to call a very simple Lua function with two strings (let's say two comma separated lists, returning true if the lists intersect at all, false if not). The obvious way to do this is to push them onto the stack with lua_pushstring, which works fine, however, from the doc it looks like lua_pushstring but makes a copy of the string for Lua to work with. That means that to cross over to the Lua function is going to require two string copies which I could avoid by rewriting the Lua function in C. Is there any way to arrange things so that the existing C strings could be reused on the Lua side for the sake of performance (or would the strcpy cost pale into insignificance anyway)? From my investigation so far (my first couple of hours looking seriously at Lua), lite userdata seems like the sort of thing I want, but in the form of a string.

• Accepting drag operations in an NSCollectionView subclass

  I've subclassed NSCollectionView and I'm trying to receive dragged files from the Finder. I'm receiving draggingEntered: and returning an appropriate value, but I'm never receiving prepareForDragOperation: (nor any of the methods after that in the process). Is there something obvious I'm missing here? • algorithm advice for finding maximum items within a time period

  Hi everyone. I have a database schema that is similar to the following: | User | Event | Date |--------|---------------|------ | 111 | Walked dog | 2009-10-1 | 222 | Walked dog | 2009-10-2 | 333 | Fed Fish | 2009-10-5 | 222 | Did Laundry | 2009-10-6 | 111 | Fed Fish | 2009-10-7 | 111 | Walked dog | 2009-10-18 | 222 | Walked dog | 2009-10-19 | 111 | Fed Fish | 2009-10-21 I would like to produce a query that returns the maximum number of times a user performs some action within a time period. For example, given a time period of 5 days, what is the maximum number of times user 111 walked the dog? The most obvious solution would be to start at some zero point and move forward each day, summing up 5 day periods along the way, then taking the maximum total out of all the 5 day windows. the approach seems incredibly costly however. I would appreciate any suggestions you may have.

• How to redefine symbol names in objects with RVCT?

  I currently develop a small OS for an embedded platform based on a ARM Cortex-M3 microcontroller. The OS provides an API for customer application development. The OS kernel and the API is compiled into a static lib by the ARMCC compiler and customer can link his application against it. The lib and the containing object files offer the complete list of symbols used in kernel. To "protect" the kernel and its inner states from extern hooking into obvious variables and functions, I would like to do some easy obfuscation by renaming the symbols randomly. The GNU binutils seems to do this by calling objcopy with the --redefine-sym flag. The GNU binutils cannot read the ARMCC / RVCT objects. Is there any solution to do this kind of obfuscation with RVCT?

• Ways to improve Java Generics and dont say get rid of wildcards and reification.

  Sometimes i like to write up template classes and use type parameters to make the abstract methods more type safe. Template<X> { abstract void doStuff( X ); // NOT public } While type safety is great etc, the problem remains that even though X is not visible to outside code, one must still include the type to avoid warnings. My solution in this case would be to make it possible to define a scope for type parameters (now they are always public). Would other original features besides the obvious would you like.

• Tortoise SVN does not give option to "Add to SVN"

  I've created an SVN repository and added folders and added contents and Committed. No problem. But when go to add a new folder (the others were on the P:\ drive, now I want to add our website which is on the C:\ drive) but Tortoise doesn't give me the option of Adding a folder. I have no idea why. Help file shows the instructions I'd expect ("right click on the folder you want to add and choose +Add...") but Add... isn't in the menu. This is TortoiseSVN v 1.6.7.18415 (I'm about to update it but I was able to add folders before so I don't think this is just a bug, I think maybe I'm missing something obvious).

• Computer sending data while turned of

  I have a some what strange problem (which could have and easy and obvious solution for all I know). My problem is that when I've booted ubuntu (now 10.4 but same problem with 9.10) and turns it off it starts sending a HUGE amount of data via the ethernet cable, so much in fact that my router can't handle it and stops responding. As far as I can tell the computer is completely turned off with no fans spinning. I can add that if I boot windows I do not have this problem, just when exiting ubuntu. There are two "fixes" for my problem: Pull the ethernet cable until the next boot Turn off power to the PSU and wait for the capacitors to unload Is there anyone who knows what could be going on? I'd be happy to post some logs or conf-files. Currently I'm using the ethernet port on my motherboard which is a Asus P6T Deluxe V2 with an updated version of the BIOS (maybe not the latest but since it only happens when I've been in ubuntu I don't wanna mess with the BIOS too much). • Tweak Data in Doctrine Migration (say, by running some arbitrary queries)

  I've got a migration that creates a couple of columns that act as foreign keys. In particular, I'm adding a creator_id and owner_id column to a model. These foreign keys indicate who created, and who currently owns, a particular kind of domain object. Users are managed by sfDoctrineGuardPlugin. What I'd like to do, for the purpose of the migration, is look up the (active) user with the lowest id, and default creator_id/owner_id to that. I don't see any particularly obvious/proper way to run arbitrary operations on the database during a migration. Does anyone know how?

• Good workflow with emacs+swank+slime+clojure?

  I just wanted opinion on good workflow using the emacs environment with clojure+swank+slime. I often find myself doing very repetitive keycommands and wonder if there is an obvious better way. I include swank with lein and start my project using lein swank from shell. Then I connect with emacs and do the correct use commands so that I can start to use (run-tests ). Then I do some coding and then want to test. To run the test I need to change buffer in emacs to the swank-repl C-x o, then I need to go to the prompt M-, then repeat the command M-p, then enter, maybe with an exception, then back to the code buffer and continue all over again with all the emacs commands. I find it a bit repetitive. I guess the solution would be to start hack on emacs and maybe add a shortcut for doing this repetitive task, but I would love to hear some suggestions because I can't be the only one who find this tedious?

  I was too excited when object initializer appeared in C#. MyClass a = new MyClass(); a.Field1 = Value1; a.Field2 = Value2; can be rewritten shorter: MyClass a = new MyClass { Field1 = Value1, Field2 = Value2 } Object initializer code is more obvious but when properties number come to dozen and some of the assignment deals with nullable values it's hard to debug where the "null reference error" is. Studio shows the whole object initializer as error point. Nowadays I use object initializer for straightforward assignment only for error-free properties. How do you use object initializer for complex assignment or it's a bad practice to use dozen of assigments at all? Thank you in advance!

• Implementing a 'Send Feedback' feature in a Java desktop application

  I would like to implement a 'Send Feedback' option in a Java desktop application. One which will pop up a box for the user to enter a comment, then send it to us along with a screenshot of the application window. How would be the best way to communicate the data to us? Two obvious solutions spring to mind: Email - I'm thinking that the application would connect to an SMTP server set-up by us, with the username/password somehow hidden in the code. SMTP over SSL for security (not of the data being sent, but of the SMTP username/password). Web service - pretty self explanatory. Which of these would be best, or is there a better alternative?

• Sqlalchemy layout with WSGI application

  I'm working on writing a small WSGI application using Bottle and SqlAlchemy and am confused on how the "layout" of my application should be in terms of SqlAlchemy. My confusion is with creating engines and sessions. My understanding is that I should only create one engine with the 'create_engine' method. Should I be creating an engine instance in the global namespace in some sort of singleton pattern and creating sessions based off of it? How have you done this in your projects? Any insight would be appreciated. The examples in the documentation dont seem to make this entirely clear (unless I'm missing something obvious). Any thoughts?

• Assigning a material in Blender with a script

  Question: How do you assign a material with a script to an object in blender? Info: I have this script to import a proprietary model type of mine that is basically a star map with object consisting of a single vertex. in order to make them look like stars and be visible they are all going to have a halo material assigned to them. I'm figuring out how to make this material and give it the values just fine, but I can't seem to get it to assign. I tried the most obvious thing which was: objectName.setMaterial(materialName) but that did nothing. and when i would take an object that had a material and call the getMaterial function on it, it would return nothing. there is something I'm missing here, can some one shed some light on it? • Export view data programmatically in Access/SQL Server

  We have an Access application front-end connected to a SQL Server 2000 database. We would like to be able to programmatically export the results of some views to whatever format we can (ideally Excel, but CSV / tab delimited is fine). Up until now we've just hit F11, opened up the view, and hit File-Save As, but we're starting to get results with more than 16,000 results, which can't be exported. I'd like some sort of server side stored procedure we can trigger that will do this. I'm aware of the sp_makewebtask procedure that does this, however it requires administrative rights on the server, and for obvious reasons we can't give that to everyone. Any ideas?

  I am using an AXObserver to monitor when a window is closed. In the callback, I am just raising an NSNotification. All working well. What is the correct syntax for attaching some user data as refcon? The working call looks like this: err6 = AXObserverAddNotification(observerTable, tableRef, kAXUIElementDestroyedNotification, nil); and the callback specified when I create the observer has the signature: static void cbTableClosed (AXObserverRef observer, AXUIElementRef element, CFStringRef notification, void *refcon) I want to replace refcon with an object of my own, but don't know how to change either line. The obvious objective-c type changes through up warnings.

• Jetty with a custom JUL logger

  I feel this should be easier, or I am missing something obvious. I am trying to use our custom JUL logging library with Jetty. No matter where I put the JAR file for the custom logger, it is not found. I have tried the usual suspects; /lib/, /lib/ext/, /WEB-INF/lib/ and even manually added it to the classpath. 2011-06-29 15:27:34.518::INFO: Started [email protected]:8080 Can't load log handler "net.aw20.logshot.client.LogShotHandler" java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: net.aw20.logshot.client.LogShotHandler java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: net.aw20.logshot.client.LogShotHandler at java.net.URLClassLoader$1.run(URLClassLoader.java:217) I am starting up Jetty using "-jar start.jar" technique. Searching around, I have spotted a couple of threads that talk about this problem, but with no resolution. Or if there was, they didn't answer with their solution. Can anyone help on this front? • Http Geocoder (Google) Accuracy level

  I am geocoding a large amount of user entered addresses and interested in the accuracy levels returned. My GOAL is to get the BEST POSSIBLE ACCURACY score for a given address. I call the geocder api following way http://maps.google.com/maps/geo?q={address}&output=csv&sensor=false&key=xx now the accuracy levels returned for same address with/without premise name q = Key Arena, 305 Harrison Street, Seattle, WA 98109 (Accuracy is 5) q = 305 Harrison Street Seattle, WA 98109 (Accuracy is 8) q = Key Arena, Seattle, WA 98109 (Accuracy is 9.) Its obvious from the above that the google servers does not return the best accuracy when street name is appended with premise/venue. the question is :) is there a way to pass the complete address ( with premise name / i.e case 1 ) and get the Max Accuracy. ( or how can tell the google server that the address is passed with premise/building name and street name) ( if you are thinking why not just use case 3, the answer is these are user entered addresses, they could enter "my moms's house" for premise, with accurate street address. in which case i want the accuracy to be 8 not 5)

• Is there a chance that sending an email via a thread could ever fail to complete?

  I have a project where I send a couple of emails via a seperet thread, to speed up the process for the end-user. It works successfully, but i was just wondering whether there were any potfalls that i might not have considered? My greatest fear is that the user clicks a button, it says that the message has been sent (as it will have been sent to the thread for sending) but for some reason the thread might fail to send it. Are there any situations where a thread could be aborted prematurely? Please note, that i am not talking about network outages or obvious issues with an email recipient not existing. For simplicites sake please assume that the connect is up, the mail server alive and the recipient valid. Is it possible, for example, for the thread to abort prematurely if the user kills the browser before the thread has completed? This might be a silly question, but i just wanted to make sure i knew the full ramifications of using a thread in this manner. Thanks, in advance, for your help.

• How to use NetBeans to debug C++ libraries not compiled with NetBeans?

  Hello, I am using NetBeans 6.8 on Redhat Linux. Does anyone know how to configure NetBeans to debug (step into) libraries not compiled with NetBeans? In my particular case, I'm trying to debug the VTK library which is built using cmake with the Debug flag set. I've written a C++ application that uses the shared libraries from VTK. Any ideas? I'd tried the obvious things like adding the source locations to the project. Note that with gdb I can debug the application and set breakpoints anywhere in VTK. Any help would be appreciated. • What are the advantages to use StringBuilder versus XmlDocument or related to create XML documetns?

  This might be a bit of a code smell, but I have seen it is some production code, namely the use of StringBuilder as opposed to XmlDocument when creating XML documents. In some cases these are write once operations (e.g. create the document and save it to disk) where as others are passing the built string to an XmlDocument to preform an XslTransform to a document that is returned to the client. So obvious question: is there merit to doing things this way, is it something that should be done on a case-by-case basis, or is this the wrong way of doing things?

• Passing ASP.NET User by Dependency Injection

  In my web application I have various components that need to access the currently authenticated user (HttpContext.User). There are two obvious ways a component can access this: 1) Accessing getting the User from HttpContext.Current 2) Passing the user around in constructors Is not ideal because it makes testing difficult and ties application components to web concerns, when they really shouldn't know about it. Is just messy and complicates everything. So I've been thinking about passing in the current user (or perhaps just the name/id) to any component that needs it using an IoC container (via dependency injection). Is anyone using this technique to supply the current ASP.NET user to parts of the application? Or, Does this sound like a sensible approach? I would like know how this has worked out for people.
