  I have ubuntu 11.04 with all the latest updates. I have an ATI HD 4350 graphics card and the "ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver" activated. The reported behaviour does not affect the functionality, its just an optical thing. When I booted up using the desktop CD, the ubuntu boot splash was shown correctly in high resolution. Do you know of any statistics about the frequency of exceptions (checked and unchecked) thrown at runtime in typical Java applications? for example: NullPointerException: 25% of all exceptions ClassCastException: 15% of all exceptions etc. 2. Which are the most frequent exceptions according to your own experiences? 3. Would you agree that the NullPointerException is generally the most often thrown exception? I am asking this question in the context of the compiler development of the PPL programming language (www.practical-programming.org). The goal is to auto-detect a maximum of frequent exceptions at compile-time. For example, detecting all potential NullPointerExceptions at compile-time leads to null-safe software which is more reliable.

• Do big domain sellers ever stop renewing their domains? [on hold]

  There are many companies out there who register tons of domains that they have no plans to use except for trying to sell them for a ridiculously high price. One domain name in particular was registered in year 2000 and hasn't been in use since then other than as a temporary redirect website for about a month (when checking web.archive.org). It makes me furious that this behaviour has not been outlawed yet. I wonder if it's even worth to wait for a .com domain to expire anymore? Do you have any success stories to share?

• What kind of connection this is?

  I happened to use `netstat' program this morning.. And what I couldn't understand its results. The snap-shot of the results window is given below: Screen-shot is at http://s2.postimg.org/3zt058415/image.png ( I can't post images! :/ ) Can somebody explain me the last entry in the results, where I've pointed them with arrows? [1] I don't understand why `canonical' servers are connected with my computer even if I am not currently using anything that I would expect such a connection to exist. [2] Second, I don't see the PID/Program name of the Program which has made this connection. I would at-least expect a PID.

• Releasing poorly written software...

  I've made a poorly written, yet fully functioning website, in (shock, horror, shock) PHP. Everything works as expected, I've implemented the necessary security measures: http://php.net/manual/en/security.php and phpsec.org/projects/guide/ It's poorly written in the sense that it's a bunch of functions thrown together that do something...oddly enough I was consistent with the naming conventions. Would you release something you were not happy with, but worked? I would also like to point out that I don't collect much user information (username, email and password) is about it -- but it's not really the security part I'm worried about, it's the spaghetti code I've written.

At what percent of clicks should you turn on prefetching of the next page? 65%? Also, does the calculus change if the current page is HTTP and the next page is HTTPS?

• DesktopCouch does not sync

  I have here two computers, both installed with Ubuntu 10.10. The Laptop uses the Netbook Edition. Both are connected, file sync and Tomboy Notes are working. My Desktop syncs databases with Ubuntu One, my Laptop does not. If I delete for example the contacts Database on my Desktop, the database is back a view seconds later. If I delete the same database on my laptop, nothing happens. (I'm using Futon) If I kill beam, delete the config and try to restart with the dbus-send I got an error Error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken. How can I fix that?

• Can't install wireless driver or get ubuntu to recognize ethernet cable

  I'm brand new to Ubuntu and I'm tearing my hair out trying to figure out how to connect to the internet. When I try to activate the Broadcom STA wireless driver, it says "Sorry, installation of this driver failed. Please have a look at the log file for details: /var/log/jockey.log." So I try the steps detailed here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1967515&highlight=jockey Problem is, I can't connect to the internet via ethernet cable either. I tested the cable with another laptop and it works just fine. I don't know what to do. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  I've been trying to pair up my bluetooth keyboard with my computer after reinstalling from a standard ubuntu 12.04 to a minimal install. In the minimal install I have no gui, so I've been trying to use the various command line tools available, but I can't figure out how the pairing is supposed to go. • Concept behind SHA-1 Checksum

  What's the basis behind SHA-1 or SHA-2 or other Checksum algorithms? I read about it here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SHA-1#Data_Integrity But I am still wondering about an answer in a layman's language. Can I understand it as a very, very compressed code that can be translated back into original data? Let's say, I have a letter written in notepad. Then the whole of my 1 A4 page size data can be converted into something like this "9b90417b6a186b6f314f0b679f439c89a3b0cdf5". So whenever I want my original data back, I can convert this back into original data? I am very sure that I am wrong here, because it is weird how data that itself contains combination of letters and numbers can be represented by smaller set of letters and numbers. Illogical! Then, what's the basic?

• Good PPA for ffmpeg

  Its annoying that the default ffmpeg in ubuntu's repositories is outdated and hobbled for legal reasons, however, there's a great page on the forums that walks you through building it from scratch: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=786095 (I also add in support for --enable-libdc1394 --enable-libgsm --enable-libopenjpeg --enable-libschroedinger --enable-libspeex when I build, which is nice, but not essential.) Anyway, I'm getting set to setup a computer lab running ubuntu for a multimedia class I'm teaching, and I was wondering if there was PPA out there that did something similar to what is available when building from scratch. The things I absolutely need from it are up-to-date libxvid, libx264, libfaac, and libmp3lame support plus the un-encumbered stuff (vorbis, theora, vpx). Is there a PPA out there that provides something like this?

  Since I switched to Ubuntu 12.04 I'd only missed one thing. A program which could launch typewriter sounds while typing. For instance, in Windows I used this: http://www.colorpilot.com/soundpilot.html for a long time. I learned then that this writing program: http://gottcode.org/focuswriter/ had the sounds but only for the program itself. However, sometimes I'm writing an email, writing on the web or doing more complex writing tasks in LibreOffice - all places where these long missed typing sounds don't apply. Does any of you know of any plans in the community of the sound bit - typing sounds - as an independent program or applet to be fetched in the Ubuntu Software Center soon? • Ubuntu 14.04 Unity not functioning, no launcher

  Yesterday I turned my computer to find that the launcher was missing. In addition, I could not using ctrl-alt-t would bring up a blank white screen. The only terminal could be found by clicking ctrl-alt-f1. I used ccsm to turn on Unity. Unity panel service was working. I installed tweak tool. I did all the troubleshooting I could find related to this subject. Nothing would work. I ultimately reinstalled Ubuntu 13.10. Also, I do not have an nvidia graphics card. I have an intel integrated graphics controller. I use a Google Apps domain name, and the settings that I'm using are : Protocol : XMPP Username : **** Domain : ********.com Resource : Home In the advanced tab, Connection security : Require encryption. UNCHECK Allow plaintext auth over unencrypted steams Connect port : 5222 Connect sever : talk.google.com File transfer proxies : proxy.eu.jabber.org Bosh URL : (blank) In the proxy tab, No proxy. I had used these same settings on 12.04 and it had worked like a charm. Any help will be appreciated.
