• Oracle Exalogic X3-2 Installation and Maintenance Training (from OU)

  Many of the Exadata partners in our community are also architecting and servicing Exalogic-based solution. The following training is open to partners and will be of interest. This course introduces the Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud X3-2 including new functions and features. It discusses the architecture and components of the server and where they are located in the chassis. The students will learn how to install and configure the Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud as well as upgrade its firmware. The course will cover maintaining and servicing field replaceable units (FRU) as well as performing hands-on hardware procedures.  This course is mandatory for all Oracle Partners that wish to become certified to perform Exalogic system installations. • Adsense ads are not a good fit for my site

  I run an academic network for college students to communicate at particular universities and we run Google Adsense. The site pulls in a decent amount for a side project but our CTR is horrible <0.2% and our RPM is equally low. The problem lies in the fact that Google pegs us as an education site (which we are) but shows our users ads for U of Phoenix, Devry U and other for-profit universities. All of our users are students of the more higher-caliber institutions and therefore have no use for these ads. I've known about this problem for some time but I don't know what to do to show more relevant ads instead (i.e. Spring Break, school apparel, poker, sports, etc). What would be the best way to change this?

• What should I worry about when changing OpenGL origin to upper left of screen?

  For self education, I'm writing a 2D platformer engine in C++ using SDL / OpenGL. I initially began with pure SDL using the tutorials on sdltutorials.com and lazyfoo.net, but I'm now rendering in an OpenGL context (specifically immediate mode but I'm learning about VAOs/VBOs) and using SDL for interface, audio, etc. SDL uses a coordinate system with the origin in the upper left of the screen and the positive y-axis pointing down. It's easy to set up my orthographic projection in OpenGL to mirror this. I know that texture coordinates are a right-hand system with values from 0 to 1 -- flipping the texture vertically before rendering (well, flip the file before loading) yields textures that render correctly... which is fine if I'm drawing the entire texture, but ultimately I'll be using tilesets and can imagine problems. What should I be concerned about in terms of rendering when I do this? If anybody has any advice or they've done this themselves and can point out future pitfalls, that would be great, but really any thoughts would be appreciated.

My question is that in looking for jobs I ran across many jobs that require a certain level of experience and code examples. Much of the work I am doing is both protected by a login, and closed source. How does someone, that is just starting out and needs to be building a resume, go about preparing for the next job. (no matter how much i love my current job, i feel like it's only responsible to always be preparing)

• Breaking in to Programming

  I've noticed that there is a gap between getting formal education in computer science as a student and entry-level/junior programming jobs. Obviously entry-level programming requires that you know some programming but how much do you need to break in? I'm in a QA non-coding role with basically a minor in CS, looking to improve my own programming skills to eventually switch industries. However I'm completely at a loss as to what I should be focusing on learning and am curious as to the steps other people have taken to get experience post-undergrad.

  Quick Background Since learning basic html 5 years ago, I've become completely obsessed with the technology, the logic, and the thrill of solving problems involved with building websites. I am still stuck at a thoroughly non-programming type job, but would really like to move into the field of web programming/design. I have no educational background in the field (was trained as a fine artist and tutor), but in the past few years have progressed fully self-taught (and self-motivated) from html to css to php, mysql, jquery, and am now building rich web applications. The Question How can I prove to a company that even though I have no education, I have a passion to learn whatever is thrown my way? ...That essentially I would come at every issue with not only knowledge, but with a passionate desire to solve it, whether that means tackling a new language or debugging code for hours at a time? p.s.   I'm in a unique situation here. I'm only just now a sophomore in high school and I've had a passion for gaming and technology since I was a child. I picked up python at age 9 and have learned 3 other languages since then. I never was good at art or such things, but I can imagine amazing logic devices to carry out game elements I would like to try. I've been researching and finding very vague advice on what needs to be present in order for me to develop. I've attempted at many things, but they never become more than a text-based mess. What education in specific would I need to advance in the game industry? Workflows are never clear to me. I've watched videos on Valve, Zenimax, and many others on how to get from an idea to a product. I've never gotten a finished product, but I've always had the idea clearly in my head.

• Assigning a different texture based on picking(XNA)

  I'm making a game using XNA. I have some simple objects like cube and sphere, and I would like to change the texture of one face of these objects based on picking. That is, when the cursor is over one face, it turns red. The only way I've seen to do this is to overload the content processor as here: http://xbox.create.msdn.com/en-US/education/catalog/sample/picking_triangle but it seems like it shouldn't be this complicated. I'm using .x models, and would like to be able to implement this for more complex models in the future beyond cubes/spheres/etc. Is this the best/only way to go about it? I'll figure that out if that's what is necessary, but it seems that there would be a simpler solution to load a different texture to a face than I've seen, I just don't know what it is.

• What exercises counter the back pain of sitting at a computer for 15 hours a day? [on hold]

  I work up to 15 hours a day (not everyday :)) programming. When I do this I get a very sore lower back. I don't want to spend $1000 on a special chair like Joel Spolsky says. I'm sure I'm not alone here. Has anybody encountered this and found an exercise/other method to combat it? Maybe somebody with more physical education than me about opposing muscle groups or something. PS (not working fifteen hours a day isn't an answer, it's how I work best) and it's not off topic as programming is about more than code - it's a verb.

• Microsoft XNA code sample wont work with blender model

  I downloaded this code sample and integrated it into my game http://xbox.create.msdn.com/en-US/education/catalog/sample/mesh_instancing It works with the model that they supplied, but throws and exception whenever I use one of my models. The current vertex declaration does not include all the elements required by the current vertex shader. TextureCoordinate0 is missing. I tried pluging my model into their original source code and same thing. My model is an fbx from blender and has a texture.
