  • Windows 7 client can't connect to CentOS PPTP VPN

    Have a Macintosh (10.8.2) that connects just fine to a CentOS 6.0 virtual private server (OpenVZ, with PPP added by the host) via PPTP. A Windows 7 Home Premium client (virtualized in Sun's Virtual Box), on the same computer, using the same Ethernet connection, cannot connect to the Linux VPN server. I have iptables disabled (for testing) on the Linux box.   • Good HDMI splitter solution

    I have a full HD TV which has only 2 HDMI ports on it. Since I have more than 2 devices I connect to TV (e.g. laptop, game console, DVD player), it becomes uncomfortable to plug in and plug out HDMI cables every time I need to use the relevant device. I need a cheap solution to increase the number of my HDMI ports at least to 3. What type of splitter do you recommend? Does the quality of splitter matter, or do they all produce the same audio & video quality?

  • Dual monitors and flash movie to stay maximized on one of them.

    I have recently assembled a dual monitor setup. I often watch live.twit.tv in my browser and I would like to run it maximized while I do other stuff on second screen, but when I click on a desktop the full screen mode rolls back to normal view. The same case is for different Flash players and I believe Silverlight players suffer from the same problem. Is there any way to bypass this behavior?

  • MacPorts pHash not showing up in Python

    I am having a problem where python does not show pHash installed even though I installed it using macports. I made sure I am using the MacPorts version of Python by doing: sudo port select --set python python27 I then installed pHash by doing: sudo port install pHash. It installed without any errors. When I call help('modules'), I do not see pHash listed among the installed packages. Any ideas on why python is not seeing the pHash install by MacPorts? It seems a novel idea to be able to get a programmable remote that can be used to manipulate windows (like the Harmony remote control series) along with some programmable software (preferably Windows supported) to convert any button on a regular remote to some command on the PC. Does this exist? What is it called? This particular instance you are REQUIRED to use the crappy supplied remote, and this is not what I am looking for

    Cheers! I dislike disobedience from my system. When I want to explicitly kill Nautilus with kill or killall, I am no longer able to do so. Previously I could disable this erroneous behavior (which even Windows do not exhibit!) through gnome-session-properties, however, it is no longer possible to set the "restart style" there (or whatever it was called). What is nowadays the correct way to disable nautilus autorestart under gnome? Reasons: I'm writing a piece of software that's painting directly into X11 root window. Nautilus is interfering. Compiz has a wallpapers plugin which Nautilus is painting over.

  • Chmod 644 on /etc/ any way to fix?

    I tried to tab complete something and I guess it wasnt there. I know you are not supposed to set the permissions to /etc/ like that, but my permissions seem to be all messed up. whoami prints out cannot find name for user ID 1002 and I cannot cd into /etc/ anymore. passwd and shadow use 640 and 644 so I am not sure why this is a problem. Regardless, is there any way to fix this?     On Linux you can create any layout you wish by editing the appropriate ASCII configuration files. On Windows the keyboard layout definitions are binary. Is there any tool that can create these binary keyboard layout configuration files? I grew up on the Macintosh international keyboard layout, which used the option key extensively, and now I would like to use the same layout on Windows. On Linux this Mac international keyboard layout exists for both the console as well as for X.Org. On Windows, the most similar layout is US International, which is not the same.

  • How can I sort out Xephyr's keyboard mapping?

    When I start up Xephyr inside of X, my keyboard map becomes wonky mostly just for non-printing characters. I can't use arrow keys. According to xev, The down arrow gets mapped to Super_R. The up arrow is Print Screen. PgDown is mapped to "Menu". My keyboard works fine in the original X display (:0), but in the Xephyr subdisplay (:1), nothing else quite works right. I don't have any funky xmodmap things going on in my main X display that I'm aware of. All I really do is setxkbmap -option ctrl:swapcaps.

  • Alternate Client for Cisco Unified Personal Communicator protocol

    At work we have an in-house chat system using CUPC. Does anyone else out there use this? There are a few things I do not like about this client: Where's the chat log? If I close the window out, I have no way of getting my conversation back. Tabbed interface? That would be nice. I hate having multiple chat windows up, having to arrange them around my desktop as more people start talking to me. I don't like that I have to use this one-off application for this protocol when other chat clients will handle 99% of the other protocols I use. Tell me: Is the protcol an open standard for which other applications have support? (pidgin, adium, digsby, etc.) If not, can I overcome these issues from within CUPC? Perhaps there are newer versions of the client that overcome these issues.

  • Is there a way to extract a "private certificate key" from Chrome and import it into Firefox ?

    This is a classical Catch-22 situation. I was using online banking the other day under Chrome. I had to order a digital certificate so that I could extend my privileges. The stupid thing is that when I got approved and opened the certificate installation menu, I saw only versions for IE/Firefox available. What the heck, I said, and chose FF - the result I got was Error 202 - ERR:CERT:INVALID. I opened FF, got to the same page, and tried to install the damn thing from there, but got a message basically saying that I must have been given a private key which obviously FF doesn't find. I read a bit, and it turned out that I really must have been given such a key but only to the browser that I ordered the cert with, i.e. Chrome. The worst thing is that if I deactivate my order, and reissue a new cert, this time from FF, I MUST go to a bank office (!!!WTF), but I am currently studying abroad, so I can't just go back. Is there a way, that I could extract that key from Chrome's profile, and import it into FF under Windows ? I will be glad to know

  • Prevent important OS X process being swapped out, without code change?

    I want hotkey-based utilities like Quicksilver or Zooom to respond immediately. But if they have been idle for a while, they (I guess) get swapped out, and respond slowly, sometimes not even responding to the first few keystrokes I wanted to send to them. How can I encourage such processes (i.e. chosen processes, not all processes system wide) to remain in active memory? Or, am I misunderstanding the problem?

  • Troubles logging into VPN on Win7 64bit

    Hi, Before I can successfully logon to my company's VPN it runs a small check in the browser to check my current processes. One of the things it checks (among other things) is to see if you have an antivirus running. If you don't, you can't connect and it says please install one with a couple links to some free ones. The issue I'm having is I recently upgraded to Win7 x64 and I haven't been able to get past the "antivirus check" part. Before, I had AVG running and I never had a single problem for years. Now I tried both AVG and Avast and I still get blocked. Does it have something to do with both of these antiviruses running in *32 mode in the processes? Any help or ideas on how to fix this would be awesome. Thanks!

  • Linux Flash Player with 2 Monitors: always full-screen on primary monitor

    My setup at home uses a laptop, with a larger external monitor in addition to the built-in LCD panel, which is primary. I can see the larger monitor from the rest of the room and use it as my TV, for playing DVDs and various types of web video. However, it isn't ideal for Flash video. For instance, if I watch a video from Hulu or any other Flash-based site, I can expand it to full-screen mode. However, no matter which monitor the browser window is on, the full-screen mode is always on the laptop LCD panel, which is both too small and not visible from most of the room. Does anyone know of a way to force the Flash video to play full-screen on the monitor I select instead of the primary? My video chipset is NVidia, using kernel 2.6.31 (Ubuntu). Thanks.

  • How can I regain control over a "stuck" scrollbar?

    I fear that this is one of those "for your own good" features, but I'm wondering whether or not there is a setting in Firefox or Chrome (or perhaps Windows in general) that will allow me to recapture the scroll bar even though the browser may be busy. I run into this a lot, especially when I have a lot of tabs open in either browser, and so perhaps it's just a fact of life. I wouldn't mind being able to scroll along gradually, even if the page hasn't had time to fully render all of the images, etc., yet. Does such an advanced setting exist "under the hood"?

    Passmark shows many varieties of Core i3, i5, and i7 cpus. Some of them, even at similar prices, are much faster than others. But Dell only offers a few options, and they're not the fast ones. For example, Dell offers the Core i5 650 (benchmark), which costs $220, and doesn't come close to the performance of the Core i3-2100 (benchmark), which costs $120. Does anyone sell systems with the faster, cheaper chips?
