• What Android tools and methods work best to find memory/resource leaks?

  I've got an Android app developed, and I'm at the point of a phone app development where everything seems to be working well and you want to declare victory and ship, but you know there just have to be some memory and resource leaks in there; and there's only 16mb of heap on the Android and its apparently surprisingly easy to leak in an Android app. I've been looking around and so far have only been able to dig up info on 'hprof' and 'traceview' and neither gets a lot of favorable reviews. What tools or methods have you come across or developed and care to share maybe in an OS project?

• Singletons vs. Application Context in Android?

  Recalling this post enumerating several problems of using singletons and having seen several examples of Android applications using singleton pattern, I wonder if it's a good idea to use Singletons instead of single instances shared through global application state (subclassing android.os.Application and obtaining it through context.getApplication()). What advantages/drawbacks would have both mechanisms?   Hi, I am a rookie to android. I am thinking of implementing a simple calculator in android to get a hold of the basics in android. I want to display a keypad with numbers and mathematical operations and when the user presses the keys the corresponding number is displayed in edit text. I tried using gettext() and updating the contents of edit text but it shows just the contents of pressed button. Also how do I read the contents of button so as to do mathematical operations in code?   I'd like to be able to mimic the behavior of the :active pseudo class on all elements in Android webkit. Currently, the :active syntax only works on a elements (links).   I want to create an android application using Eclipse Juno, but then i am getting confused of what the "activity" actually is. The first time i created android app project, there was an option that require me to select whether i want to create activity, and if so, i need to choose between BlankActivity and MasterDetailFlow. Also, is it possible that an application has many activities? I think i need some tutorials about creating android application using eclipse, so if you have a good tuts either it is in text or videos i will appreciate it. • How to deal with multiple screensizes + dynamic controls in Android?

  Hi I am learning how to program on Android phone. However I am unsure how to make my application work for the different screen sizes and resolutions. I read the tutorial on the android site and still unsure how to do it. First I know there are different files so could make a layout for each of the sizes but my problem is most of the screen needs to be dynamically created so there would not be much to put in these files. So I am not sure how to android to re size dynamic controls based on the screen size. I have also read it is bad practice to make controls in anything but the xml file as it separates view logic and programming logic. However they never talk about if you need to make these controls dynamically what you should do. So is there some other way to do it that is considered good practice?

• Accessing apache on virtual pc

  I am using a virtual pc to test my website. I can access all my webpages on the virtual pc. However, images don't load correctly. I can browse to my images folder and view all of them. However, if I click an image it will not load, and the apache log shows the virtual pc's ip trying to view the image: 192.168.0.55 - - [25/Jun/2009:20:10:41 -0400] "GET /images/pic.png HTTP/1.1" 302 220 Now, if I refresh the page it loads. 192.168.0.55 - - [25/Jun/2009:20:10:51 -0400] "GET /images/bg.png HTTP/1.1" 200 214 Also, images won't load in html or css. It seems like a redirecting problem or something, but I have no clue how to fix it. Thanks for any advice

• Check packet vlan tag using Tap virtual interface

  Hi all, I am trying to learn how to implement virtual interfaces using the Tap driver. So far my understanding is that using the tap driver I can create a virtual interface and then have a userspace program attach to this interface to analyse the data coming into this device. Now what if I attach a cisco switch to my LAN interface using a TRUNK link, forward all the packets coming into the LAN interface to the virtual tap interface and then in my program attached to this interface do some coding to analyze the vlan tag in the packet and only allow certain vlans to be forwarded to the WAN interface ? Does this sound plausible or is there is flaw in my basic understanding ? Thanks for the help! ankit

  I have asked a question which was related to this but not same, I have a centos VPS, which has two wordpress websites, one is mbas.co.in and another is onlinemba123.com, now for virtual hosting using just ONE IP ADDRESS, first I started mbas.co.in, which is working fine, when I added onlinemba123.com then, it is loading default Centos page instead of my website, and I am just testing my onlinemba123 website, I haven't configured DNS for it, I am testing it through editing my PC's hosts file, My website folder names are also same as in the conf file below Now my question is how can I load my website instead of Default page, is my virtual host config fine? • Fortigate - Accessing a Virtual Server address from several interfaces

  I am setting up a new application in its own DMZ on our Fortigate 300C firewalls. I have defined a load-balancing configuration for part of the application, and this works fine for traffic coming in from our internal network. However, I would also like this application to be reachable from other DMZs, for inter-application traffic, and from the SSL VPN interface. I can't seem to define the required policy, and it seems this is due to Virtual Servers being bound to the client interface on the Fortigate rather than the server interface (and so my virtual IP is not accessible from any of these other interfaces) Does anyone have an idea how I might go about this ? I guess I could create other virtual IPs for each interface, but this gets complicated to handle as clients need to change the address they use depending on how they are connecting. Thanks, Jeremy G

• Cannot access virtual machine via ping from the physical host machine

  I'm installing a FreeBSD Server on VirtualBox. I set up the IP address (192.168.10.5) for the virtual server to run a mail server and the host computer(Windows 7) with 192.168.10.184. The two machines cannot communicate or connect to each other. I cannot ping from the virtual machine to the host and vice versa. The host machine connects to a LAN. I want the mail server to run frm a VMachine. I think it's a problem with the network configuration of the virtual machine.

• Slow performance by PHP directory operations on virtual machine (Ubuntu libvirt)

  Some days ago I installed an Ubuntu server and two running virtual machines with libvirt. Everything works fine except one performance problem. Everytime when I call a PHP script with directory operations the operations are very slow and not performant. The virtual machine uses 6 cores (8 are available) and 7500 megabytes RAM (8 Gigabyte are available). The disk image format is qcow2. How can I improve the performance?

• Logging Bounced messages to a Database (Postfix with virtual domains/users)

  We have a postfix installation with a couple of virtual domains each with virtual users. These domains and users are mapped using a mysql database. I have been until now tracking bounces by parsing the postfix log file. I suspect there must be better and more efficient ways of doing this. I thought of three but I am not sure what is best: Write a Postfix content filter that logs the bounce and throws away the mail Use procmail - but I am not sure how procmail would work with virtual users who have no $HOME defined Write a script that POPs mail from mailboxes; parses and logs them and deletes the bounced email I would appreciate advise on which would be best from a maintenance point of view and efficient from conserving server resources point of view. • Bridge virtual machines out WLAN interface

  It seems that my wlan card (intel 5100 AGN) firmware doesn't allow "spoofing" MAC addresses. This has the side effect of destroying the capability to bridge out my virtual machines on that interface. Apparently this is a common thing on wlan cards. I can see the incoming traffic just fine in my virtual machines, but their DHCP queries don't get bridged out of the WLAN card. It works perfectly well when using the wired ethernet port. Is there a workaround for this? MAC-NAT or something? I don't want to route my virtual machines out to the Internet because I don't want my host OS to even have an IP address. I'm using Linux and KVM for virtualization.

• What are the minimum hardware requirements for the latest version of Android Jelly Bean OS?

  I searched around, and there's no information that points exactly to the suggested, minimum, or otherwise dated information containing specifications on this. I want to install a newer version of Android on an older ZTE-X500 MetroPCS smartphone. However, I'd like to know the backwards compatibility in regards to using a newer featured OS with lackluster, limited hardware compared to today's smartphones, such as Galaxy S4. However, I still wish to do this. If Jelly Bean is too demanding, I will set up Honeycomb, or get a modified Honey Comb ROM, or tweak the source to my preferences. However, nothing outlines the specifics of the "system requirements" it suggests for optimum performance, such as RAM, processor speed, processor features, and/or any other features, like DMA, video circuit advancements, and/or sound and special hardware requirements noted as well. Please, if you will, point me to a source that mentions this, and please tell do not link me to any PDF file formats. Thank you. PS: I'm a computer programmer.

• Run one virtual machine on a Linux server + standard Linux functions

  Hi, I am looking for a method to setup a Linux server (running Ubuntu Server) that uses Samba for file sharing, as well as hosting a Windows virtual machine (in this case, Windows Small Business Server 2003, which in turn hosts SQL Server Express - Exchange won't be used on this). I would like to have the Linux server serving the files over Samba, and hosting the Virtual Machine. This obviously rules ESXi out as it couldn't do Samba at the same time. What would be the next best solution to give reasonable speed? Vmware Server 2.0, VirtualBox, Xen? There will be 10-15 users accessing the Samba shares and the SQL Express virtual machine. Matt

• IMAP can't access virtual account sharing name with local user account

  I am setting up a postfix/dovecot mail server with virtual accounts, per the Chris Haas tutorial. I'm finding that virtual users who also have local user accounts on the mail server cannot access their email remotely via IMAP. They're told they cannot login. (I'm using Thunderbird for that). These same users can login when emulating IMAP locally via telnet. Virtual users without local accounts have no trouble with IMAP access from remote clients. These local user accounts have vestiges of prior efforts in their home directories: mbox files, Mail and mail directories. I've looked at the logs for clues to where the remote login process is failing (dovecot authentication failure? confusion over where emails are stored?) but found nothing helpful. I haven't found much in the dovecot or postfix documentation that describes the IMAP login process and expectations in enough detail to help me diagnose this. So: how do I go about identifying the problem and researching a solution?

  I inquired with the support of justcloud.com telling them that I have a vmware vm that I was wondering if it could be backed up while in use. I can back up the vm once it is shut down but I was wondering if their "shadow copy" would back it up while running. This was their response: Thank you for your email. I am really very sorry but virtual machines can't be backed up for a simple reason that they are virtual, they have virtual memory, not physical memory. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help with. Am I wrong in thinking that a vm can be backed up while in use? Does this response even make sense? I need a cheap alternative to backing up the vm off the server in case it goes down.   I use IE7 & IE8 disk images from microsoft and Virtual Box to test my websites in IE. One day I stopped being able to connect to the internet with virtual box, seemingly after trying to alter proxy related settings to view Hulu.com outside of the U.S... I don't know whether it's coincidence or not. Anyway, I am using the 'PCnet-FAST III (NAT)' adapter with virtual box. Can you guys help me troubleshoot this issue?   Trying to get my IIS 7.5 playing nice with VS 2008 on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. I'm getting this error: System.Security.SecurityException: Request for the permission of type 'System.Web.AspNetHostingPermission, System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed. This happens when accessing a virtual directory outside C:\inetpub\wwwroot. I'd like to be able to create virtual directories outside the root if I can. I've added the NETWORK SERVICE to the folder hosting the virtual directory, still no luck. This folder is on my C: drive, not a share. TIA

I have found some programs that allow me to see the network, so I know the hardware works. However, this program does not allow me to pick the correct program to play the files I want.
