  • USB 3.0 hub; what can it power?

    - by pouzzler
I own an Asus UX31A laptop, equipped with 2 USB 3.0 ports. I would like to connect several USB devices to one of these ports, using a USB 3.0 hub. 1) Am I correct in assuming the Asus "USB Charger+" commercial blurb corresponds to the USB 3.0 standard "Battery Charging Specification 1.2", and furthermore inferring that the laptop can deliver 1.5A through a USB port? 2) Does a powered external USB 3.0 hard drive draw on the USB power lines? 3) I would like to connect the aforementionned drive, an android phone, and a 200mA rated optical mouse to an unpowered USB 3.0 hub, itself plugged into the laptop. Should my above assumptions be false, would this setup be able to power all three devices? Thanks to the usb guru who'll settle my fears to rest. Best regards, Sébastien

  • Touchscreen on KDE and Ubuntu?

    - by The Quantum Physicist
I just bought a Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro... I liked the activity of the touchscreen on Windows, and it makes sense as it does on my smart phone. However, I'm not a regular windows user, so I installed Kubuntu 14.04, and everything looks fine, except that the activity of the touchscreen is so silly that it's useless. Why? Because all the touchscreen does is a single mouse with left click. For example, if I touch the screen for a relatively long time, I don't get the effect of a right click. How do I configure the touchscreen properly to get the activity expected on Ubuntu and KDE? Thanks for any efforts.

  • Where does Skype save its chat history & contacts?

    - by user4796
I'm aware that there is a main.db file that is stored in a Windows directory. On XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<windows user>\Application Data\Skype\<username> But I just downloaded Skype onto my Android and noticed that all chats are sync'd. So to me, this suggests that the main.db file is not the only storage being used (because it is obviously not on my phone). Are contacts and chat history stored in my online Skype account? Does anyone know where I can find more information about this? I read this thread: Does skype automatically save chat history to the cloud? And how do you explain the sync'd chats?

  • Can I create an Infrastructure access point from built-in WiFi (as opposed to Ad-Hoc) on Windows XP?

    - by evilspoons
I want to use my Windows XP laptop as an access point. What I am trying to achieve is possible under Windows 7 with a myriad of utilities, but the wireless driver stack was different before Windows 7 and those specific APIs don't exist on XP. The reason behind me wanting to do this is that I would like my Android phone to be able to connect via WiFi to a network that is only hard-wired (reverse tethering). Unfortunately, my Android device (Galaxy S Captivate) does not support ad-hoc networks without a serious amount of screwing around. Is it possible to create an "Infrastructure" network with my Dell Latitude D830's built-in WiFi - a "Dell Wireless 1395 WLAN Card", which I am assuming is probably rebadged Broadcom, or is there some fundamental difference between a wireless adapter and an access point that would prevent this?

  • Websites not working with Opera 11.00, major bugs

    - by s hanley
Sites like ebay and even superuser stop working properly when I use opera 11.00. Menus stop working everywhere from ebay to godaddy. Hovering on a menu item doesn't expand it, no sub menu slides out. This makes a large number of very popular websites unusable. Am I right in assuming this is a javascript issue? I use opera for the turbo feature (I have tested opera with and without turbo so it's not turbo's fault) because I'm on mobile broadband until I get my phone line sorted out. Turbo helps me save money, as well as allowing me to surf at a sane speed. Is there a firefox or chrome equivalent to opera turbo that doesn't cost money? I'm using Opera 11.00, build 1156.

  • Unable to access my gmail after moving to another country

    - by Gilgamesh
I am completely fed up with google's useless security policy for emails. I hope there is any method to solve this. What is happenibg is that I used to use my gmail account from Turkey and recently I had to move to Sweden. When trying to gain access to the same account from there, google tells me that 'something has changed'since my last access and it is asking that I verify myself using methods that I forgot them all because I created that account two years ago when I had a different phone number and email and when I did not care much to answer the'secret' question. I also tried google's incompetent recovery survey that judged that I did not provide sufficient information for them to give me access again. Is there any way to solve this, please help. I desperately need to access that account. Thanks

  • why is the address bar black in Google chrome so you cannot see what you're typing ?

    - by Tim
The address bar background color in Google Chrome is black. I cannot see what I'm typing. What's going on? This is a problem when you're typing in a URL you've never used before (so there's no matching history). Type in a URL you've never used before. Imagine someone is giving it to you over the phone. Make a typo somewhere. Use the back arrow to go back and correct it. You cannot see where the cursor is. This just started happening yesterday. I'm on WinXP Pro.

  • Turn 2 USB type A ports (receptacles) into an extension cable with 2 type A receptacles using Linux?

    - by Tianyang Li
I'm currently trying to connect 2 USB devices together, but both ends are type A plugs. Before I buy a physical extension cords with 2 type A receptacles, I'd like to know if I can connect these 2 devices together at all by passing data "transparently" through a Linux box with = 2 USB ports. I'm actually trying to connect a keyboard to an Android phone, and I want to first try if it can work by using a Linux box as a "virtual" USB extension cord. Has anybody done something like this before? Thanks!

  • Is there a way to send personal documents on Kindle for Mac app?

    - by Sid
I have the Kindle App on my Mac, and an android phone. When I email documents to my [email protected] id, I am able to see it in my library, and subsequently send it to my Android device. However, I'm not able to send it to the Kindle App for my Mac. The Kindle for Mac FAQs clearly state that Magazines, personal documents, etc. are not supported. However, I came across here that there is a workaround to this, although I've not been able to figure out what it is.

  • Server Design Enquiry [closed]

    - by Brandon Gelfand
I am really new to this and am having trouble with how I can store information from a website. I am going to be making a site similar to dropbox for my company and there is gonna be around 40 TB of space that we need to be able to access on the go, for instance pull the file up on the phone or off our laptop using the internet. Obviously using an Amazon S3 server is not the most cost effective way of doing this so how can I make my own server to hold all of the info and communicate to it from a website? Please I need as much help as possible, like a blueprint or something. Thanks and sorry for the noobish question but I can't really find an exact answer to my question.

  • How to know if a server is physical or virtual? [duplicate]

    - by tachomi
This question already has an answer here: is there anyway to know if your supposedly fully dedicated server is really a virtually resource-shared machine? [duplicate] 5 answers How can I know if my provider is giving me a dedicated physical server or if I'm getting virtual servers? The provider is from an other country so I don't have the chance to go and see the servers by myself, all of them have linux and they're managed by SSH. All the hire has been done by internet or phone. Are there any commands, dirs to analyze or a way to get this info? They of course tell me that the servers are physical, but when they make some support or hardware/software upgrade or that kind of stuff doesn't take a long. For example, when I ask for a new one with specific requirements at the end they give me more infrastructure than the one I asked for. Of course no one gives extra things without an extra price. Hope I have hinted

  • How Social Is Your Contact Center?

    - by Charles Knapp
More than 75% of consumers have complained on a social site after a poor customer experience. Yet, 70% of companies have little understanding of the social media conversations about their brand. To deliver upon your brand promise, retain customers, and increase their lifetime value, you must deliver great customer experiences across social, mobile, phone, and chat channels. Siloed channels produce poor customer experiences. Social channels must integrate with the people, processes, technology, and traditional channels used to satisfy customers. The more effective a company’s social marketing, the greater the demand for effective social service. However, service is not a job for social marketers. It is a job for service specialists, focused on KPIs such as response time, first contact resolution, satisfaction, churn, retention, and customer lifetime value. Most social-enabled contact centers are at the early adopter stage, attempting to “bolt on” social media as a side process. Many are experiencing inconsistent customer experiences, higher costs, and negligible return on investments. Service leaders should consider carefully how to integrate social channels with their current customer service and support people, processes, technology, and channels. Here is one company realizing success: the pre-integrated Oracle RightNow Social Experience “empowers our contact center operations by enabling our agents to join customer conversations that are happening on social sites like Twitter and Facebook and integrate those conversations into our overall multichannel customer engagement processes.” — Lisa Larson, Drugstore.com

  • Apple iPhone 4S Launch In India On Nov 25

    - by Gopinath
Aircel, one of the leading wireless mobile services provider of India has just announced that iPhone 4S will be available to its customers on November 25. You can start pre-booking the phone from November 18 through Aircel website or walking into an Aircel showroom near you. My multiple calls to Aircel customer care division were no use to get the details on the price information. Three times the call got disconnected before a customer care executive tried fetching the details on price and models. We hear from BGR India blog that iPhone 4S price is going start at Rs. 40,000 for a 16GB model and may go up to Rs. 50,000 for a 64 GB model. Airtel, another leading mobile service provider in India, who sells iPhone in India is not sure when they are going to start offering iPhone 4S to its customer. I reached customer care regarding the iPhone 4S and they don’t have any details to offer at the moment. It’s good to see Apple releasing iPhone 4S to India markets just after couple of months of International release. Apple was earlier criticized for releasing iPhone 2, iPhone 3G in India almost an year after the international launch while companies like Nokia release their flagship models just after weeks of international launch. One of the most sought after feature of iPhone 4S is Siri and my friends in US told that it works amazingly good. Siri does not have any problem in understanding Indian English accent and it is very good at recognizing the Indian names in contacts list. But at the same time we do hear reports that Siri does not help much if it’s used outside USA. Considering that Siri is a software it should be possible for Apple to improve it to work better outside USA. But who know the priorities of Apple! • How to Customize the File Open/Save Dialog Box in Windows

    - by Lori Kaufman
Generally, there are two kinds of Open/Save dialog boxes in Windows. One kind looks like Windows Explorer, with the tree on the left containing Favorites, Libraries, Computer, etc. The other kind contains a vertical toolbar, called the Places Bar. The Windows Explorer-style Open/Save dialog box can be customized by adding your own folders to the Favorites list. You can, then, click the arrows to the left of the main items, except the Favorites, to collapse them, leaving only the list of default and custom Favorites. The Places Bar is located along the left side of the File Open/Save dialog box and contains buttons providing access to frequently-used folders. The default buttons on the Places Bar are links to Recent Places, Desktop, Libraries, Computer, and Network. However, you change these links to be links to custom folders of your choice. We will show you how to customize the Places Bar using the registry and using a free tool in case you are not comfortable making changes in the registry. • 500 Metro Style WP7 Icons

    - by Bil Simser
I was inspired by The Noun Project, a project that offers up “Metro-style” icons in SVG format. The project is licensed under a public domain license and while it’s a great project, all of the content is in SVG format. Jon Galloway has a great post (from 2007) talking about the differences between SVG and XAML so I highly recommend that for some background. I thought it would be helpful to the WPF/Windows Phone 7/Silverlight community to provide the content in alternative formats for use in your applications. The Goods I’ve put together a package of the 500 icons (502 actually) in PNG, XAML and the original SVG format along with a couple of sample projects so you can see them in action. There’s a WPF desktop app: And a Windows Phone 7 app: Building It To get all the content first I wrote up a quick program to suck the original SVG files. Luckily they’re all in a common path just named 1.SVG, 2.SVG, and so on. Easy sleazy to grab the contents. Once I had 500 SVG files I used the latest copy of XamlTune, an open source CodePlex project that has a command line conversion tool to convert the directory of SVG files into XAML (the tool also created a PNG file of each SVG so that’s just icing on the cake). Conversions The conversion from SVG to XAML isn’t 100%. While you can just drop the content into a WPF app, it doesn’t work that way for WP7. Note that while it does show up in the app (on the emulator or device) it wouldn’t show up in Visual Studio for me. Maybe some XAML guru out there can tell me why. You can just as easily use the PNG files in WP7 but if you want the crispness of vector graphics, go for the XAML version. Of course with XamlTune being open source you could always modify the output of that program to cater it to your app. If you do make a change that’s worthy please consider submitting a patch to the project so everyone can benefit.
