I have some android code (textView, editText, button) and I add all strings in string.xml. Large transactions causing "System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired" error?

My application requires a user to log in and allows them to edit a list of things. However, it seems that if the same user always logs in and out and edits the list, this user will run into a "System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired." error. I've read comments about increasing the timeout period but I've also read a comment about it possibly caused by uncommitted transactions. And I do have one going in the application. I'll provide the code I'm working with and there is an IF statement in there that I was a little iffy about but it seemed like a reasonable thing to do. I'll just go over what's going on here, there is a list of objects to update or add into the database. New objects created in the application are given an ID of 0 while existing objects have their own ID's generated from the DB. If the user chooses to delete some objects, their IDs are stored in a separate list of Integers. Once the user is ready to save their changes, the two lists are passed into this method. By use of the IF statement, objects with ID of 0 are added (using the Add stored procedure) and those objects with non-zero IDs are updated (using the Update stored procedure). After all this, a FOR loop goes through all the integers in the "removal" list and uses the Delete stored procedure to remove them. A transaction is used for all this. However, I was just wondering if this is the correct approach? Or if there was a better way?

Which index is used in select and why?

I have the table with zip codes with following columns: id - PRIMARY KEY code - NONCLUSTERED INDEX city When I execute query SELECT TOP 10 * FROM ZIPCodes I get the results sorted by id column. But when I change the query to: SELECT TOP 10 id FROM ZIPCodes I get the results sorted by code column. Again, when I change the query to: SELECT TOP 10 code FROM ZIPCodes I get the results sorted by code column again. And finally when I change to: SELECT TOP 10 id,code FROM ZIPCodes I get the results sorted by id column. My question is in the title of the question. I know which indexes are used in the queries, but my question is, why those indexes are used? I the second query (SELECT TOP 10 id FROM ZIPCodes) wouldn't it be faster if the clusteder index was used? How the query engine chooses which index to use?

override set in construct() in php?

I have a class based on database values. I'm using __set to automatically sync database values with the class properties. Set checks an array of database fields that it is allowed to update in the database. The field 'id' isn't in the list, so __set will throw an exception if you try to do $objDbRow->id = 5;. However, there is one time when I do want to set the id property of the object, and that's on instantiation. So in __constuct, I have $this->id = $id (where $id is passed to __construct). However, __set seems to be intercepting the setting here, because an exception is being thrown on construction. What's the way to get around this? I suppose I also have a boolean flag, like $instantiated, that __set() would check before it does it's field whitelist checking. But that feels inelegant.

Problem with Refreshing data in ExpendableListView

Hi! My problem is when I want to refresh data in ExpendableListView while being in that current activity. I create adapter and when I want to add new data to list I call again constructor of that adapter(it is my private variable) with all new data....and then I call onContentChanged() method to redraw my list. But what happens is that I cant expand my list any more...like it is blocked or something and logcat isn't saying anything... JPA GeneratedValue with GenerationType.TABLE does a big jump after jvm restart

When I start my server and add an entry, the generated id will start with 1, 2, so on and so forth. After a restart, adding an entry would generate an id like 32,xxx. Another restart and adding of entry would generate an id like 65,xxx. I don't know why this is happening. Here's a snippet of the annotation I'm using for my id. Hi, I have a table in SQL database: ID Data Value 1 1 0.1 1 2 0.4 2 10 0.3 2 11 0.2 3 10 0.5 3 11 0.6 For each unique value in Data, I want to filter out the row with the largest ID. For example: In the table above, I want to filter out the third and fourth row because the fifth and sixth rows have the same Data values but their IDs (3) are larger (2 in the third and fourth row). I tried this in Linq to Entities: IQueryable<DerivedRate> test = ObjectContext.DerivedRates.OrderBy(d => d.Data).ThenBy(d => d.ID).SkipWhile((d, index) => (index == size - 1) || (d.ID != ObjectContext.DerivedRates.ElementAt(index + 1).ID)); Basically, I am sorting the list and removing the duplicates by checking if the next element has an identical ID. However, this doesn't work because SkipWhile(index) and ElementAt(index) aren't supported in Linq to Entities. I don't want to pull the entire gigantic table into an array before sorting it. Is there a way?

Can't get jQuery to get focus on cloned input fields

I have a page that needs to create dynamic form fields as often as the user needs, and I am trying to use Ajax to tie it in to my database for faster form entry and to prevent user typos. So, I have put my Ajax returned data into popup div, the user selects, then the form field is filled in. The problem comes on the cloned fields. They don't seem to want to bring up the popup div when focused. I am thinking it is something to do with when they get created/added to the DOM. Event 4625 - Logon Failure - Server 2008 R2 is logging them all over the place ! How to stop the attack?

I've been monitoring failed logons to a server which is directly connected to the internet with no hardware firewall in the way...testing purposes only. Using the Server 2008 R2 firewall, I blocked access to just about everything except RDP, then I told the firewall to only allow connections to the RDP port from "MY" static IP. I tested from other locations and I am not able to login to the server unless i'm at my office. So how are people coming from Chinese IP's able to attempt logons and get logged as failures ?? Is there something i'm missing that needs to be blocked? Any help would be appreciated.

SQL Server, fetching data from multiple joined tables. Why is slow?

I have problem with performance when retrieving data from SQL Server. My sql query looks something like this: SELECT table_1.id, table_1.value, table_2.id, table_2.value,..., table_20.id, table_20.value From table_1 INNER JOIN table_2 ON table_1.id = table_2.table_1_id INNER JOIN table_3 ON table_2.id = table_3.table_2_id... WHERE table_1.row_number BETWEEN 1 AND 20 So, I am fetching 20 results. This query takes about 5 seconds to execute. When I select only table_1.id, it returns results instantly. Because of that, I guess that problem is not in JOINs, it is in retrieving data from multiple tables. Any suggestions how I would speed up this query?

Problem with joining to an empty table

I use the following query: select * from A LEFT JOIN B on ( A.t_id != B.t_id) to get all the records in A that are not in B. The results are fine except when table B is completely empty, but then I do not get any records, even from table A. Later It wont work yet!
