  • Send mail on event log error trigger safe check frequency

    - by Zeb Rawnsley
    I want to use powershell to alert me when an error occurs in the event viewer on my new Win2k12 Standard Server, I was thinking I could have the script execute every 10mins but don't want to put any strain on the server just for event log checking, here is the powershell script I want to use: $SystemErrors = Get-EventLog System | Where-Object { $_.EntryType -eq "Error" } If ($SystemErrors.Length -gt 0) { Send-MailMessage -To "[email protected]" -From $env:COMPUTERNAME + @company.co.nz" -Subject $env:COMPUTERNAME + " System Errors" -SmtpServer "smtp.company.co.nz" -Priority High } What is a safe frequency I can run this script at without hurting my server? Hardware: Intel Xeon E5410 @ 2.33GHz x2 32GB RAM 3x 7200RPM S-ATA 1TB (2x RAID1) Edit: With the help of Mathias R. Jessen's answer, I ended up attaching an event to the application & system log with the following script: Param( [string]$LogName ) $ComputerName = $env:COMPUTERNAME; $To = "[email protected]" $From = $ComputerName + "@company.co.nz"; $Subject = $ComputerName + " " + $LogName + " Error"; $SmtpServer = "smtp.company.co.nz"; $AppErrorEvent = Get-EventLog $LogName -Newest 1 | Where-Object { $_.EntryType -eq "Error" }; If ($AppErrorEvent.Length -eq 1) { $AppErrorEventString = $AppErrorEvent | Format-List | Out-String; Send-MailMessage -To $To -From $From -Subject $Subject -Body $AppErrorEventString -SmtpServer $SmtpServer -Priority High; };

  • Sendmail configs and logs look correct, but I get no mail

I used this tutorial to config sendmail on Ubuntu. • Linux/Unix MTA with the smartest queue?

    - by threecheeseopera
I am looking for an MTA that will allow me (a script, really) to proactively manage it's send queue in response to status codes returned by the remote servers I am delivering to. Basically, for each mail sent I would like to be able to react to the SMTP reply code returned by the remote server, ex. '250 OK', or to any error conditions like connection timeouts. Additionally, I would like to be able to manage the send queue moving forward based on this information, e.g. 'example.com has timed out the last 5 connection attempts, so no longer queue mail for recipients @example.com'. I am currently using postfix and perl to parse it's logs for this information, but I am playing a game of catchup that is prone to errors (out-of-order log entries etc.) and it's starting to get messy (some real ugly regexes ;). I really don't want to reinvent the wheel and use some language's smtp library; i would prefer to use a proven/fast/reliable MTA. I am however open to suggestions if what I need just isn't possible. Thanks for your help!

  • Email test deferred (mail transport unavailable) with ClamAV

  • Python in command line runs the wrong version?

    - by Deflect
I have several versions of Python installed on a Windows 7 computer. I want to run Python 2.7 by default, but for whatever reason, typing python in the command line runs Python version 2.4.5. I've tried adding C:\Python27 to my system path variable as per this question, and manually combed my path variable it to make sure Python 2.4.5 wasn't tossed in there by mistake, but that didn't fix the issue. I have to type in C:\Python27\python.exe every time I want to access the correct version of python I want. What other places can I check? How can I make the command line use the correct version of python? I also found this but it's not for windows. [EDIT] My path (separated by semicolons): C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Windows Live; C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Windows Live; C:\Windows\system32; C:\Windows; C:\Windows\System32\Wbem; C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\; C:\Program Files\Dell\DW WLAN Card\Driver; C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Roxio Shared\DLLShared\; C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Shared; c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Binn\; c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Binn\; c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\DTS\Binn\; C:\Program Files\TortoiseGit\bin; C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_26\bin; C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_21 ; C:\Program Files\IVI Foundation\VISA\Win64\Bin\; C:\Program Files (x86)\IVI Foundation\VISA\WinNT\Bin\; C:\Program Files (x86)\IVI Foundation\VISA\WinNT\Bin; C:\Program Files\WPIJavaCV\OpenCV_2.2.0\bin; C:\Program Files (x86)\LilyPond\usr\bin; C:\Program Files\TortoiseSVN\bin; C:\Program Files (x86)\doxygen\bin; C:\Program Files (x86)\Graphviz 2.28\bin; C:\Users\Michael\bin\Misc\cppcheck\; C:\Program Files (x86)\Git\cmd; C:\Python27\python.exe; C:\Ruby192\bin; C:\Users\Michael\AppData\Roaming\cabal\bin; C:\Python27\; [EDIT 2] Running python spews this out: 'import site' failed; used -v for traceback Python 2.4.5 (#1, Jul 22 2011, 02:01:04) [GCC 4.1.1] on mingw32 Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information. >>> ...and running python --version (as suggested below) seems to be an unrecognized option. • How to prevent delays associated with IPv6 AAAA records?

    - by Nic
Our Windows servers are registering IPv6 AAAA records with our Windows DNS servers. However, we don't have IPv6 routing enabled on our network, so this frequently causes stall behaviours. Microsoft RDP is the worst offender. When connecting to a server that has a AAAA record in DNS, the remote desktop client will try IPv6 first, and won't fall back to IPv4 until the connection times out. Power users can work around this by connecting to the IP address directly. Resolving the IPv4 address with ping -4 hostname.foo always works instantly. What can I do to avoid this delay? Disable IPv6 on client? Nope, Microsoft says IPv6 is a mandatory part of the Windows operating system. Too many clients to ensure this is set everywhere consistently. Will cause more problems later when we finally implement IPv6. Disable IPv6 on the server? Nope, Microsoft says IPv6 is a mandatory part of the Windows operating system. Requires an inconvenient registry hack to disable the entire IPv6 stack. Ensuring this is correctly set on all servers is inconvenient. Will cause more problems later when we finally implement IPv6. Mask IPv6 records on the user-facnig DNS recursor? Nope, we're using NLNet Unbound and it doesn't support that. Prevent registration of IPv6 AAAA records on the Microsoft DNS server? I don't think that's even possible. At this point, I'm considering writing a script that purges all AAAA records from our DNS zones. Please, help me find a better way. UPDATE: DNS resolution is not the problem. As @joeqwerty points out in his answer, the DNS records are returned instantly. Both A and AAAA records are immediately available. The problem is that some clients (mstsc.exe) will preferentially attempt a connection over IPv6, and take a while to fall back to IPv4. This seems like a routing problem. The ping command produces a "General failure" error message because the destination address is unroutable. C:\Windows\system32>ping myhost.mydomain Pinging myhost.mydomain [2002:1234:1234::1234:1234] with 32 bytes of data: General failure. General failure. General failure. General failure. Ping statistics for 2002:1234:1234::1234:1234: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss), I can't get a packet capture of this behaviour. Running this (failing) ping command does not produce any packets in Microsoft Network Monitor. Similarly, attempting a connection with mstsc.exe to a host with an AAAA record produces no traffic until it does a fallback to IPv4. UPDATE: Our hosts are all using publicly-routable IPv4 addresses. I think this problem might come down to a broken 6to4 configuration. 6to4 behaves differently on hosts with public IP addresses vs RFC1918 addresses. UPDATE: There is definitely something fishy with 6to4 on my network. When I disable 6to4 on the Windows client, connections resolve instantly. netsh int ipv6 6to4 set state disabled But as @joeqwerty says, this only masks the problem. I'm still trying to find out why IPv6 communication on our network is completely non-working.

  • How to make Exchange 2003 non-authoritive

    - by Romski
Background We are a small company with an internally hosted Exchange 2003. It receives email for 2 domains (the company was renamed a few years back). For the sake of argument, the domains are: oldname.com newname.com We have moved newname.com to a hosted exchange service, and our DNS record is correctly routing emails. Our internal server still receives email for oldname.com, although we have asked our hosting company to accept emails for that domain. Problem My problem is that emails generated internally from monitoring software, printer, etc. are being caught by our (defunct) internal server and being delivered to the old mailboxes. I believe that what is happening is that our internal exchange server considers itself to be the authoritive server for newname.com. I think it must be looking in active directory for a mailbox and delivering it internally without ever going outside. Attempt to fix I started to follow the article here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321721. I removed the SMTP recipient policy for newname.com, and added a dummy address and made it primary. I also answered yes for updating the associated emails. I then restarted the Microsoft Exchange Routing System and SMTP, but emails are still being routed internally. Is there a way to force the exchange server to route all emails for the domain newname.com to the new hosted service?

  • Leopard mail.app quoted-printable weirdness

    - by pehrs
I am not sure if this is a bug in mail.app, or a configuration I just can't find. It might also be a strange sideffect of GPGmail. Mail.app correctly displays all e-mails on my IMAP server, except for the e-mails in my "Sent Messages" folder. In the sent messages folder it messes up åäö, in typical quoted-printable with wrong char-set fashion. They become ‰ˆ. When looking at the source of the e-mails it seems like the header generated by mail.app is correct: Message-Id: <> From: To: In-Reply-To: <> Content-Type: multipart/signed; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; micalg=pgp-sha1; boundary="Apple-Mail-4--741321197" X-Smtp-Server: smtp.example.com Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Mime-Version: 1.0 (Apple Message framework v936) Subject: Example subject Date: Fri, 26 Mar 2010 10:14:14 +0100 References: <> X-Pgp-Agent: GPGMail 1.2.0 (v56) This is an OpenPGP/MIME signed message (RFC 2440 and 3156) --Apple-Mail-4--741321197 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed; delsp=yes Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <Text here with =E5=E4=F6> --Apple-Mail-4--741321197 content-type: application/pgp-signature; x-mac-type=70674453; name=PGP.sig content-description: This is a digitally signed message part content-disposition: inline; filename=PGP.sig content-transfer-encoding: 7bit -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG/MacGPG2 v2.0.12 (Darwin) iEYEARECAAYFAkus62kACgkQlIRLofxhDjYnnwCcDmCXuMGsKlh3a418s12coJgn 36sAoKMdkP3+g/OMK+Ps7AbjQq4Nbqzv =XMko -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --Apple-Mail-4--741321197-- Thunderbird has no problem displaying the messages. • Tell postfix to merge three Authentication-Results:-Lines into one?

    - by Peter
I am running a postfix mta with debian wheezy. I am using postfix-policyd-spf-python, openkdim and opendmarc. When receiving e-mails from google (google apps with own domain) for example, the header looks like this: [...] Authentication-Results: mail.xx.de; dkim=pass reason="1024-bit key; insecure key" header.d=yyy.com [email protected] header.b=OswLe0N+; dkim-adsp=pass; dkim-atps=neutral<br> [...] Authentication-Results: mail.xx.de; spf=pass (sender SPF authorized) smtp.mailfrom=yyy.com (client-ip=2a00:1450:400c:c00::242; helo=mail-wg0-x242.google.com; [email protected]; [email protected]) [...] Authentication-Results: mail.xx.de; dmarc=pass header.from=yyy.com<br> [...] This means any of these programs creates it's own Authentication-Results:-Line. Is it possible to tell postfix to merge this into one single Authentication-Results:-Line? When I send an e-mail to google, it says: [...] Authentication-Results: mx.google.com; spf=pass (google.com: domain of [email protected] designates xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx as permitted sender) smtp[email protected]; dkim=pass [email protected]; dmarc=pass (p=NONE dis=NONE) header.from=xxx.com [...] And this is exactly what I want. Just one Authentication-Results-Header. How can I do this? Thanks. Regards, Peter

  • Trying to setup catchall mail forwarding on my rackspace's cloudspace server

    - by bob_cobb
I'm running Ubuntu 12 Precise Pangolin and am trying to configure my server to catchall mail sent to it and forward it to my gmail address. I've been trying lots of examples online like editing my main.cf file which looks like this: smtpd_banner = $myhostname ESMTP $mail_name (Ubuntu) biff = no # appending .domain is the MUA's job. append_dot_mydomain = no # Uncomment the next line to generate "delayed mail" warnings #delay_warning_time = 4h readme_directory = no # TLS parameters smtpd_tls_cert_file=/etc/ssl/certs/ssl-cert-snakeoil.pem smtpd_tls_key_file=/etc/ssl/private/ssl-cert-snakeoil.key smtpd_use_tls=yes smtpd_tls_session_cache_database = btree:${data_directory}/smtpd_scache smtp_tls_session_cache_database = btree:${data_directory}/smtp_scache # See /usr/share/doc/postfix/TLS_README.gz in the postfix-doc package for # information on enabling SSL in the smtp client. myhostname = destiny alias_maps = hash:/etc/aliases alias_database = hash:/etc/aliases myorigin = /etc/mailname mydestination = destiny, localhost.localdomain, localhost relayhost = smtp.sendgrid.net mynetworks = 127.0.0.0/8 [::ffff:127.0.0.0]/104 [::1]/128 mailbox_size_limit = 51200000 recipient_delimiter = + inet_interfaces = all inet_protocols = all In my /etc/postfix/virtual I have: @mydomain.com [email protected] @myotherdomain.com [email protected] Which isn't working when I email [email protected] or [email protected]. So I got the recommendation to add the following to my /etc/alias: postmaster:root root:[email protected] restarted postfix, and tried emailing [email protected] or [email protected] but it still won't send. Does anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong here? I'd appreciate any help.

  • Cron won't use msmtp to send emails in case of failed cronjob

    - by Glister
I'm trying to configure a machine so that it will send me an email if one of the cronjobs output something in case of an error. I'm using Debian Wheezy. Cron is working normally (without the email functionality). msmtp is installed and configured. Have already symlinked /usr/{bin|sbin}/sendmail to /usr/bin/msmtp. I can send email by using: echo "test" | mail -s "subject" [email protected] or by executing: echo "test" | /usr/sbin/sendmail Without the symlink (/usr/sbin/sendmail) cron will tell me that: (CRON) info (No MTA installed, discarding output) With the symlinks I get: (root) MAIL (mailed 1 byte of output; but got status 0x004e, #012) Can you suggest how to config the cron/msmtp pair? Thanks! EDIT: Note: I've written "msmtpd" by mistake. Its not a daemon but rather an SMTP client named just "msmtp" (without the "d" ending). It is executed on demand and it is not running in the background all the time. When I try to send an email by using msmtp like that it works: echo "test" | msmtp [email protected] On the far side, in the logs of the SMTP server I read: Nov 2 09:26:10 S01 postfix/smtpd[12728]: connect from unknown[CLIENT_IP] Nov 2 09:26:12 S01 postfix/smtpd[12728]: 532301C318: client=unknown[CLIENT_IP], sasl_method=CRAM-MD5, [email protected] Nov 2 09:26:12 S01 postfix/cleanup[12733]: 532301C318: message-id=<> Nov 2 09:26:12 S01 postfix/qmgr[2404]: 532301C318: from=<[email protected]>, size=191, nrcpt=1 (queue active) Nov 2 09:26:12 S01 postfix/local[12734]: 532301C318: to=<[email protected]>, orig_to=<[email protected]>, relay=local, delay=0.62, delays=0.59/0.01/0/0.03, dsn=2.0.0, status=sent (delivered to command: IFS=' ' && exec /usr/bin/procmail -f- || exit 75 #1001) Nov 2 09:26:12 S01 postfix/qmgr[2404]: 532301C318: removed Nov 2 09:26:13 S01 postfix/smtpd[12728]: disconnect from unknown[CLIENT_IP] And the Email is delivered to the target user. So it looks like that the msmtp client is working properly. It has to be something in the cron/msmtp integration, but I have no clue what that thing might be. Can you help me?

  • Prevent master to fall back to master after failure

    - by Chrille
I'm using keepalived to setup a virtual ip that points to a master server. When a failover happens it should point the virtual ip to the backup, and the IP should stay there until I manually enable (fix) the master. The reason this is important is that I'm running mysql replication on the servers and writes should only be on the master. When I failover I promote the slave to master. The master server: global_defs { ! this is who emails will go to on alerts notification_email { [email protected] ! add a few more email addresses here if you would like } notification_email_from [email protected] ! • Would an invalid certificate cause an 0x8004010F sync error?

    - by hydroparadise
We just migrated from Exchange 2003 to 2007 which was a combo primary AD/DNS server and it has not gone smoothly. We are now down to getting a new certificate (a bureaucratic process thats out of my hands) and users getting the 0x8004010F sync issue. We are only using Outlook 2007 as our email client and the sync error appears exactly as so: 9:21:44 Synchronizer Version 12.0.6562 9:21:44 Synchronizing Mailbox '<User>' 9:21:44 Done 9:21:44 Microsoft Exchange offline address book 9:21:44 0X8004010F Now, I have read a number of technet articles on this issue anywhere from adding an A record in the DNS for autodiscover.domain.com to syncing the old OAD to the new OAD. In otherwords, theres lots of thing to try, but trial and error at this point might be hazardous to ther server's health and I am trying to narrow down the list of things to try. What has me thinking that the sync error could be related to the certificate is an event error message that says the following: Microsoft Exchange could not find a certificate that contains the domain name mail.ccufl.org in the personal store on the local computer. Therefore, it is unable to support the STARTTLS SMTP verb for the connector Internet Mail with a FQDN parameter of mail.ccufl.org. If the connector's FQDN is not specified, the computer's FQDN is used. Verify the connector configuration and the installed certificates to make sure that there is a certificate with a domain name for that FQDN. If this certificate exists, run Enable-ExchangeCertificate -Services SMTP to make sure that the Microsoft Exchange Transport service has access to the certificate key. I am not fully clear on how the Exchange Transport Service is related to Syncronization, but my hunch is that it probably not related to there not being a valid certificate. So to recap, would an invalid certificate cause an 0x8004010F sync error?

  • Centos/Postfix able to send mail but not receive it

    - by Dan Hastings
I have set up postfix and used the mail command to test and an email was successfully sent and delivered. • Postfix "loops back to myself" error on relay to another IP address on same machine

    - by Nic Wolff
I'm trying to relay all mail for one domain "ourdomain.tld" from Postfix running on port 2525 of one interface to another SMTP server running on port 25 of another interface on the same machine. However, when a message is received for that domain, we're getting a "mail for loops back to myself" error. Below are netstat and postconf, the contents of our /etc/postfix/transport file, and the error that Postfix is logging. (The high bytes of each IP address are XXXed out.) Am I missing something obvious? • Configure php mail() on Windows/IIS

    - by Adam Tuttle
I have a Windows Server 2003 / IIS web server running various application servers, and ended up begrudgingly adding PHP into the mix. I know Win/IIS isn't the ideal environment for PHP, but it's what I've got and I need to make it work. From phpinfo(): Configuration File (php.ini) Path: C:\WINDOWS Loaded Configuration File: C:\php\php.ini From C:\php\php.ini: [mail function] ; For Win32 only. SMTP = localhost smtp_port = 25 ; For Win32 only. ;sendmail_from = [email protected] ; For Unix only. You may supply arguments as well (default: "sendmail -t -i"). ;sendmail_path = ; Force the addition of the specified parameters to be passed as extra parameters ; to the sendmail binary. These parameters will always replace the value of ; the 5th parameter to mail(), even in safe mode. ;mail.force_extra_parameters = Lastly, I have IIS setup to run an SMTP relay that allows connection and relay, but only from localhost. But when I try something that uses mail(), I get this error: The e-mail could not be sent. Possible reason: your host may have disabled the mail() function... Any ideas?

  • [tcpdump] Proxy delegate refusing connexion ?

    - by simtris
Hi guys, I'm a little disapointed ! My aim was to build a VERY simple smtp proxy under debian to handle mail from a port (51234) and forward it to the standard 25 port. I compile and install a "delegate" witch can handle easily that. It's working very well like that : delegated SERVER="smtp://anotherSmtpServer:25" -P51234 The strange thing is, it's working on my virtual test machine and on the dedicated server in local but I can't manage to use it trought internet. I test it like that. telnet [mySrv] 51234 Of course, no firewal, no deny host, no ined/xined, the service delegated is listening on the right port ... 2 clues : The port is answering trought internet with nmap as "51234/tcp open tcpwrapped" have a look at the tcpdump following : 22:50:54.864398 IP [myIp].1699 [mySrv].51234: S 2486749330:2486749330(0) win 65535 22:50:54.864449 IP [mySrv].51234 [myIp].1699: S 2486963525:2486963525(0) ack 2486749331 win 5840 22:50:54.948169 IP [myIp].1699 [mySrv].51234: . ack 1 win 64240 22:50:54.965134 IP [mySrv].43554 [myIp].auth: S 2485396968:2485396968(0) win 5840 22:50:55.243128 IP [myIp] [mySrv]: ICMP [myIp] tcp port auth unreachable, length 68 22:50:55.249646 IP [mySrv].51234 [myIp].1699: F 1:1(0) ack 1 win 46 22:50:55.309853 IP [myIp].1699 [mySrv].51234: . ack 2 win 64240 22:50:55.310126 IP [myIp].1699 [mySrv].51234: F 1:1(0) ack 2 win 64240 22:50:55.310137 IP [mySrv].51234 [myIp].1699: . ack 2 win 46 The part "auth" seems suspect to me but didn't ring a bell. • Extract sender activity from postfix logs for auditing user

    - by Aseques
We have a mail user on our postfix server that was using the company mail to send compromising information to the competence. I've been asked to make a report of the actions for that user in the last time. There are tools like pflogsumm and others that can extract statistic data, but I haven't so far find anything useful to get all the info for a user because the data is in multiple lines. I'd like to get something like this: For the sent mail 11/11/11 00:00:00 [email protected] -> [email protected] 11/11/11 00:00:01 [email protected] -> [email protected] For the received mail 10/10/11 00:00:00 [email protected] -> [email protected] 10/10/11 00:00:01 [email protected] -> [email protected] I know I can do a script by myself, but matching the postfix ID for every mail is not something that can be made with a simple grep, and I've a lot of mail history that I have to recheck distributed among diferent files and so on. The source log is the standard postfix format, for example this one... • Why would e-mail from our own domain not be forwarded to gmail

    - by netboffin
To solve a problem with spam on our server we tried to forward e-mail from our dedicated server's mailserver(matrix smtp service) to gmail, but while most e-mails got through e-mail from our own domain all went missing. They weren't in the inbox or spam or anywhere else. We've had to go back to using the old system, which means my boss gets a huge amount of spam. We have a windows 2003 server with iis 6 and the matrix smtp service installed. I've toyed with the idea of installing a mail proxy like ASSP but it looks pretty complicated. We're hosting 20 domains on the server as well as our own which has an online shop whose payment system depends on email. I can't start playing around with complicated solutions when it could have disastrous consequences and I don't know enough to implement them safely. So my question has two parts: Part One: Why can't we forward e-mails from people using the same domain. If our domain was foobar.com then [email protected] can't receive from [email protected], but he can receive from everyone else. Part Two: Is there a really simple server side solution to spam that would work with matrix? For instance popfile?

  • Sending e-mail on behalf of our customer(s), with Postfix

    - by NathanE
We send e-mail on behalf of our customers, via our own SMTP services. It's always been a problem for us because usually our "spoofing" of their source address results in the mails being caught in spam traps. This hasn't been a problem in the past due to the small volume and low importance of these mails that we sent. However this requirement has recently changed and we need to fix this issue. We realise that fundamentally our application is sending e-mail incorrectly, as per this post: Send email on behalf of clients However, we would like to resolve the problem at the SMTP server level. We have deployed a server running Postfix. Is it possible to have Postfix automatically adjust the mail headers so that we get this "Sent on behalf of" behaviour? I figure it should just be a case of Postfix noticing that the FROM address is the spoofed (i.e. a domain that is not mentioned in its config anywhere) and therefore inject/replace the appropriate headers to get the desired effect. Thanks.

  • One workstation gets slow access to the server, but others are fast

    - by Mike Hanson
I've just setup a machine with Windows Server 2008. It hosts various services, like IIS, POP3, SMTP, Music for Squeezeboxes, VNC. All was working well for the first week or so. One day I needed to create a mapped drive on the server, so it could access files on my workstation. Windows indicated that Network Discovery was needed, so I turned it on with the "Home / Office" option (rather than "Public"). This may be coincidence, but since that time I've been having troubles accessing various services from my main workstation (running Windows 7/64): POP3 continued working correctly, but SMTP was delayed or failed entirely. (Telnet took 20 seconds to connect, but Outlook would never send messages.) VNC failed entirely. I reinstalled it on the server, and now it works but feels sluggish. The music web server was extremely delayed and usually failed. I tried reinstalling, and now it takes about 30 seconds to show the page name on the browser tab, and another 30 seconds to display any page contents. Other machines on the local network seem fine, as do machines connected via the Internet. I don't believe I changed anything on my own machine that would cause this. I considered the possibility that my anti-virus was involved, so I uninstalled AVG (commercial version), but that didn't help. I installed Norton 360 after that, and it didn't complain of viruses on my machine, and the delays remained. Because only my machine is affect, I'm tempted to blame it, except that reinstalling software on the server improved the situation, so there is almost certainly something going on with the server too. The firewall has all the necessary ports open, and it works fine for the other workstations (including external machines connected via the Internet), which indicates that it should be OK. Any ideas?

  • Issues with returned mail sent to web-based email domains

    - by Beeder
My company is having issues with returned mail that we send out to external domains. A few weeks ago we replaced a firewall and changed ISP providers and began subsequently having issues RECEIVING emails from external sources because we hadn't updated our new IPs in the DNS records. After making the necessary configuration changes and setting up SMTP forwarding over port 25 to our mail server, everything was working fine up until a few days ago when we started having mail sent out returned to us. We aren't having any trouble communicating internally (to recipients on our domain) but it seems we're having trouble with outbound messages to web-based email recipients. (@hotmail, @live, @yahoo, @gmail...etc) Currently we are running Server 2003 SP2 and exchange 2003. I'm very unfamiliar with configuring Exchange and could really use some help in narrowing down the possibilities. I did some research and am becoming suspicious of Sender ID being the culprit due to our recent IP address change and the likelihood that Sender ID is identifying us as a fake domain. Am I going in entirely the wrong direction? Any input or guidance would be infinitely appreciated. This is the message that is returned when an outbound message fails...this particular one was sent to my @live.com account for testing purposes... Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients. The following recipient(s) could not be reached: [email protected] on 5/17/2012 3:02 PM There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server. Please contact your system administrator. Unfortunately, messages from xx.x.xx.x weren't sent. Please contact your Internet service provider since part of their network is on our block list. I tried a reverse DNS lookup and found that we are set up as a Forward-confirmed reverse DNS. So do I just need to contact my ISP and have them correct their DNS records or is this something I can solve on our end??
