• sharepoint 2007 access denied when accessing user profiles via ssp

  Guys I have a really strange problem in regards to sharepoint mysites today I go into user profiles and properties in order to setup a property all of a sudden I get access denied. First off I know that I'm logged in with the correct account after the access denied I decided to click on personalization services and permissions I than get An unhandled exception occurred in the user interface.Exception Information: Cannot complete this action. I'm not seeing anything in the server application logs either. So have any of you guys seen this before is there some kind of way to grant a user account the manage profiles right permission using stsadm. BTW all other fucntions of the ssp are working fine so my question is if the user profiles and my sites of a ssp tanks how do you repair that portion of the ssp? BTW the user accounts that I'm using are site collection owners and also they have full control at the web application level. • How important is the uniqueness of your domain name?

  I've finally come up with a domain name that I like and is available. The name is nonsensical and doesn't translate into anything meaningful in any language, as far as I know. It's something like "FOOBARite". (Don't steal that!) I'm wondering about a few search issues. Results-wise, searching for it in Google currently returns about 15k results, none of which are relevant (dead Twitter pages, various unpopular online handles, and botched french translations). However, Google starts off with a spelling suggestion, which removes a letter. ("Did you mean: FOOBARit?") That returns about 250k results for several different and unrelated websites/organizations by that name. One is some technology provider, another is a sign-language organization, another is the name of a font... None of them seem particularly popular, there's not that much activity on any of those pages. Anyway, the two are pronounced differently, they're just a letter off. Should I go with my idea or is this one-letter variation going to cause me problems? If my site becomes ranked well enough, will Google's spelling suggestion go away? I don't want users to search for my site name and be told they've spelled it wrong.

• Lost Windows 7 files

  My intention was to have a dual boot system with Ubuntu and Windows 7. Obviously I did something wrong because although I had a system menu on booting (is it normal to appear DOS-like?) which gave me an option of booting into windows 7, I was unable to do so. Also, when I booted into Ubuntu, my Windows 7 drive was not available. The Windows 7 drive was an internal 1TB drive partitioned into a 200GB (OS) and a second partition making up the remainder. I was still unable to access this Windows 7 drive even after deleting Ubuntu as I kept getting an 'requires an NTFS drive' error, or something similar. I could not even re-install Windows 7 as the disk was not recognised. I did eventually get the drive back by but I cannot for the life of me remember how. I did try to recover my lost W7 data using Ontrack Easy Recovery (which has always been succesfull in the past for post format recovery) but it would not recognise the 1TB although it was now formatted as NTFS. From other posts on this site, I gather that this is considered a 'Windows 7 Site' problem by Linux users. However, I would dearly love to recover some of my lost Windows 7 files. I had resigned myself to a lot of lost personal data but I happened to notice that a 2TB drive I had connected through a USB docking station had been repartitioned. It must have happened when I installed Ubuntu as I can think of no other explanation. I certainly do not remember consciously requiring Ubuntu to do this. • ISP issue browsing "sonos.com" - need to diagnose and prove [closed]

  I am unable to browse to a website "sonos.com" with my ISP (virgin). I have ruled out browsers, PCs, macs, routers, wifi, etc. Other ISPs (even other virgin connections in different areas!) supply this site no problem. I am 99% convinced there is a DNS issue lurking here. There is something fishy about the DNS for the site : What I notice is that online DNS sites tell me the right IP address for "sonos.com", but not for "www.sonos.com". Anyway when I type "sonos.com" the browser (any/all of the 4 I tried) fail to display the page. Firefox gives a "connection was reset" error. If I browse to sonos.com using the IP address it works OK. Browsing to www.sonos.com or sonos.com works fine with other ISPs of course. Questions: 1 Does anyone have any idea what might be going on here? 2 Any suggestions as to tools/monitors to help investigate/prove what is going on I can then take this up with virgin and/or sonos. • RewriteRule in htaccess in subdirectory

  Windows server, running Apache. In my Apache conf, I have AllowOverride None for the root of a site and then I have a subdirectory set to AllowOverride All: <Directory /> AllowOverride None </Directory> <Directory "/safe/"> AllowOverride All </Directory> However, when I try to set up a rewrite rule in the subdirectory's htaccess file, nothing happens, I just get a 404 page not found error. Example: RewriteEngine On RewriteRule (.*) /blah?test=$1 [R=302,NC,NE,L] Rwewriting URLs are working fine from the root via the Apache conf. I don't understand why the rule is ignored. I don't want to do the URL re-writing within the conf because for this case I may need to be changing the redirects constantly and don't want to reload the server every time a change is made. I also don't want to affect server performance by enabling htaccess files site-wide, just in the subdirectory I need it.

• Apache2 Virtual Host broken; displayed default index.html on subdomain, but correct content on www.subdomain

  I've got a Linode configured as a Ubuntu 10.04.2 web server with Apache 2.2.14. I have a total of 4 sites, all defined under /etc/apache2/sites-available as virtual hosts. All sites are almost identical clones for configuration. And all sites but my last work successfully. default: (www.)exampleadnetwork.com (www.)example.com reseller.example.com trouble: client1.example.com I keep getting this page when I visit the client1.example.com site: It works! This is the default web page for this server. The web server software is running but no content has been added, yet. In my ports.conf file I have the NameVirtualHost correctly set to my IP address on port 80. If I access the "www.sub.example.com" alias the site works! If I access it without the www I see the "It Works" excerpt posted above. Even apache2ctl -S shows that my vhost file parses correctly and is added to the mix. • Passenger_wsgi.py given precedence over DirectoryIndex?

  I was having an issue with my site today, where apache wasn't serving index.php by default. I had moved passenger_wsgi.py to the directory above document root so that I could serve python files without having to use PassengerAppRoot in the .htaccess file. I wanted to do this because I set up a development sub-domain on the site, and I wanted to use a different passenger_wsgi for the two domains, but that meant having different .htaccess files for the different PassengerAppRoots. Is there a way to have passenger_wsgi.py where it was and still let apache serve the index.phps? edit: I'm sorry, I'm tired. I just realized that the way this probably works is that passenger_wsgi.py is handling the routing instead of apache.

• HTTPS version of page throws 404, regular HTTP appears fine?

  I'm having a strange issue with a website in IIS on Windows Server 2003. It has a valid wild card certificate on it, however when I use HTTPS on the page I get a 404 not found. Without HTTPS it shows up fine. Also, if I go to the domain root of the site using HTTP the homepage shows up, but with HTTPS it REDIRECTS ME to a totally different website installed on the same IIS server. I am quite confused. I tried giving each site a unique IP address but it didn't change anything, I also tried changing the SSL ports, no luck. This IIS is setup to run PHP also. What could I check to resolve this?

• Website is not clickable in Windows XP Internet Explorer 7

  I have installed Windows XP Virtual PC on Windows 7 to test a site that is having issues in IE7 on windows xp - the website loads up but you cannot click on hyperlinks - its like the website has frozen - now is this a browser support issue or OS issue? Can anyone shed any light on this? Is there any browser tools i can use to spot any problems? Sorry if i have been too vague - not much else to say really - completely lost.. Maybe this might help a little; Any guidance is appreciated UPDATE: I think i know what the problem maybe - its the jQuery UI reference that is causing issues with the site. • Two SSL certs for a domain in DirectAdmin

  If I were to get 2 SSL certificates, one for example.com and one for www.example.com, is there a way to install them both on the site example.com in DirectAdmin? The default interface only allows installing one for both versions. If not, can I separate the 2 domains into 2 sites? One of them would only be a redirection, so there wouldn't be any duplication of site files. (Please don't answer with "one certificate should work for both". It doesn't always. This is a DirectAdmin question)

• What are some internet trends that you've noticed over the past ~10 years? [closed]

  I'll give an example of one that I've noticed: the number of web sites that ask for your email address (GOOG ID, YAHOO! ID, etc.) has skyrocketed. I can come up with no legitimate reason for this other than (1) password reset [other ways to do this], or (2) to remind you that you have an account there, based upon the time of your last visit. Why does a web site need to know your email address (Google ID, etc.) if all you want to do is... download a file (no legit reason whatsoever) play a game (no legit reason whatsoever) take an IQ test or search a database (no legit reason whatsoever) watch a video or view a picture (no legit reason whatsoever) read a forum (no legit reason whatsoever) post on a forum (mildly legit reason: password reset) newsletter (only difference between a newsletter and a blog is that you're more likely to forget about the web site than you are to forget about your email address -- the majority of web sites do not send out newsletters, however, so this can't be the justification) post twitter messages or other instant messaging (mildly legit reason: password reset) buy something (mildly legit reasons: password reset + giving you a copy of a receipt that they can't delete, as receipts stored on their server can be deleted) On the other hand, I can think of plenty of very shady reasons for asking for this information: so the NSA, CIA, FBI, etc. can very easily track what you do by reading your email or asking GOOG, etc. what sites you used your GOOG ID at to use the password that you provide for your account in order to get into your email account (most people use the same password for all of their accounts), find all of your other accounts in your inbox, and then get into all of those accounts sell your email address to spammers These reasons, I believe, are why you are constantly asked to provide your email address. I can come up with no other explanations whatsoever. Question 1: Can anyone think of any legitimate or illegitimate reasons for asking for someone's email address? Question 2: What are some other interesting internet trends of the past ~10 years?

• Exim: Change sender address when sending mails out of local network

  We have a working exim setup at a site, where users can send and receive mails. We are trying to setup a server to send some warnings and errors using email to an address that is outside the local network. The problem is: The program that sends the mails sends them using the username it runs under and the local hostname of the server. This cause the mails to have a sender of format: [email protected]. Exim sends these mails to the ISP's SMTP server, which rejects the mails as they have an illegal or unverifiable sender (the internal address). I'm thinking I should configure exim to rewrite the sender when: - sender's domain is on the local network - receiver's domain is outside the local network I tried setting some kind of rewriting in the exim config, but did not manage to get it to work. I'd show what I have tried, but I ran out of time on the last visit to the site, and had to revert to the original version losing all the changes I tried.

• Install Trac Without Setting Up a VirtualHost in Apache?

  I'm trying to set up Trac to test out it's functionality, and the only guides I can find online talk about setting up a VirtualHost. Right now I am under the impression that I need access to a DNS server to properly use the VirtualHost directive, and for various reasons I don't have access to one. Is it possible to set up Trac without setting up a VirtualHost? I haven't had any luck. If I run the site with tracd, it works - which means that at least part of it is set up properly. Right now all I have is an Apache Directory directive pointing to /pathToTracSite/htdocs/, and when I visit the trac location, all I get when viewing the site from a browser is an empty directory (which makes sense, because htdocs/ is empty). My server is running Apache2 I know I'm missing a lot here, because I don't understand Apache the Trac system very well - any help would be appreciated.

• Trying to get DNS services running on Windows Server 2008 R2, what am I getting wrong ?

  Ok, So I am basically trying to get a home server pc up that will provide Domain name services, act as Mail server and web server. I have one static IP, well it's not officially static but hasn't changed in two years so I'll call it static. I have done the following: Configured router NAT/virtual port forward UDP/TCP port 53 to the internal IP of my server 192.168.1.16, in adapter settings specified the manual settings: 192.168.1.16 IP, gateway 192.168.1.1, Subnet: 255.255.255.0 and loopback DNS: 127.0.0.1 Using my public my public IP Checked using http://www.canyouseeme.org/ that port 53 is open and is not being blocked by my ISP. It can see services on this port. Registered Domain name (mydomain.com.au) Updated whois database through the domain registrars site and registered NameServer names: ns0.mydomain.com.au and ns2.mydomain.com.au, both have been associated with my single public IP. (Waited 24 hours) Update the nameserver for mydomain.com.au: primary ns0.mydomain.com.au secondary: ns2.mydomain.com.au (waited 24+ hours) Installed Server 2008 R2, install web server role and DNS role. Webserver works when I enter my public IP into browser of any PC/mobile, get IIS7 welcome page. In DNS server: Created new forward lookup zone: ; ; Database file mydoman.com.au.dns for mydomain.com.au zone. ; Zone version: 10 ; @ IN SOA mydomain.com.au. mydomain.testdomain.com. ( 10 ; serial number 900 ; refresh 600 ; retry 86400 ; expire 3600 ) ; default TTL ; ; Zone NS records ; @ NS ns0.mydomain.com.au. @ NS ns1.mydomain.com.au. ; ; Zone records ; @ A 192.168.1.16 www A 192.168.1.16 The Domain name services will however not work, the whois database updated with ns0.mydomain.com.au etc. but when I type in my site name www.mydomain.com.au from an external machine it will not open site and I can't even ping it (Can't find host) When I check the ns0.mydomain.com.au NS record using a tool Like: http://www.squish.net/dnscheck/ I get: Security: Server ns0.mydomain.com.au (XXX.XXX.XXX.XX <- my public IP) is recursive Domain exists but there is no such record Any ideas, thanks...

• Restricting permissions to individual documents on SharePoint

  Here's what I'm trying to do: I would like to create a list of documents on a site in my company's SharePoint site. Each document should have specific user's permissions to view and edit it. For example: The list is for performance reports. John has his out there called "John_PR_09.docx". Only him and his supervisor should have permissions to view, edit, or do anything to it. And then another employee has hers out there with permissions for only her and her supervisor, and so on... I have tested this out with a document that I removed the groups and users from (since they inherit permissions from it's parent) and only gave my user account permissions to. I then asked someone else to try and open and she could, she even wrote "TEST" on the document and saved it. What am I doing wrong? I thought I stopped it from inheriting permissions from it's parent and only gave myself rights to edit it.

I checked The SharePoint site: http :// 'serverName'/Reports/Pages/Folder.aspx and have full sitewide and project permissions on this site. I loaded SQL Server Management Studio on the machine running the instance of TFS (and also the SQL backend for TFS) and ensured that I had roles "serveradmin" and "sysadmin". How do I run this report? Specifically, what permissions are required?

• Homepage not showing on Google

  About six weeks ago my homepage (mayberrykayakingdotcodotuk) disappeared from the google organic search for "kayaking pembrokeshire" despite it having been number 2 within a few weeks of it's launch last summer. My previous site (www.mikemayberrykayakingdotcodotuk) had been 2nd for about six years and has 301 redirects for all pages to the new site. Google toolbar still rates the homepage as 3/10 and the domain is still showing in search results, just not the homepage. A little research suggests that this is most likely to be due to an issue with google treating two pages as identical content (one with www. and one with not) since the changes in their algorithms around that time and that the way to fix this is to add some code somewhere. This makes sense to me as my print advertising doesn't have the www part of the address. I have cpanel access but a limited knowledge on web coding, having picked things up as I've gone along and paid for designers etc., when needed. Would someone be able to let me know where I have to go to add the code and what code I need to add to redirect the crawlers to one page? Or is there another issue that is causing this? • How do you QA and release software quickly (some call it agile) with a large team?

  My work used to be a smaller team. We had less than 13 devs for a while. We are now growing rapidly, and are over 20 with plans to be over 30 in a few months (triple dev size!!!) Our process for QA'ing and releasing each build is no longer working. We currently have everyone develop the new code, and stick it onto a staging environment. A few days before our weekly release, we would freeze the staging environement and QA everything new / old. By our normal release time everything was usually deemed acceptable and pushed out the door to the main site. We reached a point where our code got too big so we could no longer regress the entire site each week in QA. We were ok with that, we jsut made a list of everything important and only covered that and the new stuff. Now we are reaching a point where all the new stuff each week is becoming too big and too unstable. Our staging environment is really buggy week after week, and we are usually 1-2 hrs behind the normal release time. As the team is growing further, we are going to drown with this same process. We are re-evaluating everything, and I personally am looking for suggestions / success stories. Many companies have been where before and progressed beyond, we need to do the same

• Is there an idiot's guide to software licensing somewhere?

  Basically, my knowledge on the issue is zilch other than the fact that open-source and closed-source exists. I'm a web developer (not a designer in the slightest), so I look online for things like icons. I've always been a big fan of these icons, which have a Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 License. As far as I can see, this license says 'do whatever you want with them as long as you have a link back to me somewhere'. Is that assumption correct? Just today I found a new icon set, with a much more confusing license (found here), and to be quite honest I have no idea if I'm allowed to use them or not. At the moment I want to just use them for toy stuff that might never see the light of day, but then my source code is stored on Github, is it legal to store the icons there where they're publicly accessible? If I put them on my personal website that might have ads on it to make me five cents every now and then, is that legal? If I use them on a site that offers a free service to users, is that legal? If that site then starts making money (via things like paid subscriptions) or gets bought out by someone (highly unlikely but one day possible) is that legal? Is there some noob guide out there that explains all this stuff, because I would hate to start using this sort of stuff now only to have to change it all later. Even if I buy the icons, there's still licensing issues that I don't understand! :( And this sort of stuff keeps popping up more and more often...

• Add copyright notice to a website

  Not really a programming question, but I find it related. If not (or you find this question too subjective), please tell me, yell at me, swear at me, kick me in the nuts, or just vote to close :) I've read some questions and answers here on SO about adding copyright notices, but not the specific ones I am looking for. I want to add a copyright notice to a website I created. Something like (c) Me 2010. All rights reserved. I am aware that everything written by someone is automatically copyrighted (if I'm not mistaken and perhaps depending on country laws). I see some sites use the following format for this (c) Me 2009-2010. However for me that makes no sense to add an 'end-date' to the notice. I am aware I can code to update the notice every year, but I just find it strange. Or is it just me? Another question is: I also use copyrighted code from others (they are all mentioned in the credits incl. links to their licenses ofc) on my site. Would it still be OK to add the copyright notice to the site with only Me in it? So to sum it up I have 2 questions: What is THE RIGHT WAYTM of adding a copyright notice on a website (or code or whatever)? If there is one. Is it allowed to copyright code with other copyrighted code within it?

• VPN ipsec tunnel from router to single windows server computer (gateway-to-host)

  Firstly, is this possible? The situation: 2 different ISP's. One has several servers and a firewall running. The other is limited to only one virtual server with one network card running windows server 2008r2. I need to set up a site-to-site style VPN using IPsec between the firewall of one ISP and the windows host on the other (gateway-to-host). This host has to run a SQL-Server that I can access from the other ISP's servers through the VPN tunnel. It seems looking at the RFC for IPsec that this should be possible using the features of Windows 2008, but I can't get it to work so far... It seems that I can't access any services running on the same computer or IP address used as the tunnel endpoint? Thanks Chris
