• How can I search based on distance with the Google Maps API?

  So here's the issue... I have a field where users can type in their address (which will be GeoCoded via Google Maps API). I have several addresses of widgets in my database (saved as address.. again can easily be geocoded). What I need is for the user to type in their address and for a list of my widgets to come up based on distance from their address. I have THOUSANDS of addresses for my widgets and users have an infinite number of addresses obviously. Any ideas? Thanks.

• How can I load a SQLITE database from a buffer with the C API ?

  Hello, I am trying to load a database from the memory instead of opening a .sqlite file. I have read the C/C++ API reference but I can not find the proper method. The buffer I am trying to load is simply an sqlite file loaded in memory. I just want to use this buffer (a const char* array) without using the filesystem (I could have saved this buffer in a file, then load the file, but no). First, I create a memory DB : mErrorCode = sqlite3_open_v2(":memory:", &mSqlDatabase, lMode, NULL); This returns SQLITE_OK, then I tried to use the buffer as a statement and call preparev2(MyDB, MyBufferData, MyBufferLength, MyStatement, NULL) but it's not really a statement, and it returns an error. Same result if I call directly exec(MyDB, MyBufferData, NULL, NULL, NULL); I guess there is an appropriate method to achieve this as it might be common to load a DB from a stream or from decrypted data... • Facebook Error: "The client token cannot be used for this API" - works on DEV and STAGE but not on LIVE app?

  I've built a notification sending system that sends notifications to all users of our app, using the app access token. This system is currently running on my localhost. When I configure it with the appid and appsecret for my dev and stage environments, it works fine. But when I put in the appid and appsecret of the LIVE app, I get this error: {"message":"The client token cannot be used for this API", "type":"OAuthException", "code":190} So what's different between dev and live? Dev and Stage are in sandbox mode, Live is not. So I tried disabling sandbox mode on Dev/Stage and they continue to function fine. Dev works fine, Stage works fine, Live gives this error. All other code is the same except for the appid, appsecret, and redirect_uri (changing it to match the domain of each environment). I have checked this post, but unfortunately resetting our appsecret on a site with 1,000,000 users is not something we can do at the moment (too much other functionality relies on it).

• Is there an API available that, given text, returns a list of companies with their ticker symbols?

  Ideally I would love to extract exactly what Google Finance's Get Quote functionality does with the predictive search. That's really all that I'm looking for. I don't want to store the data, I just want to be able to search company names/ticker symbols so that I can get the correct symbol. I already have specialized quote functionality in place. Also, the search functionality needs to be intuitive. I've looked through Google Finance API but haven't seen exactly what it is that I'm looking for. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

• Best practice for C++ audio capture API under Linux?

  I need to create a C++ application with a simple audio recording from microphone functionality. I can't say that there aren't enough audio APIs to do this! Pulse, ALSA, /dev/dsp, OpenAL, etc. My question is what is the current "Best practice" API? Pulse seems supported by most modern distros, but seems almost devoid of documentation. Will OpenAL be supported across different distros, or is it too obscure? Have I missed any? Is there not a simple answer? thanks!

• What is the universal way to use file I/O API with unicode filenames?

  In Windows there is a common problem: the filenames should be converted to local codepage, before they are passed to open(). Of course, there is a possibility to use Win32::API for that, but I don't want my script to be platform-dependent. At the moment I have to write something like: open IN, "<", encode("cp1251", $filename) or die $!; but is there any library, that hides these details? I think the local codepage can be automatically detected, so I just want to pass unicode filename and forget about the details. Why is it still not in the box?

• Correct way to protect a private API key when versioning a python application on a public git repo

  I would like to open-source a python project on Github but it contains an API key that should not be distributed. I guess there's something better than removing the key each time a "push" is committed to the repo. Imagine a simplified foomodule.py : import urllib2 API_KEY = 'XXXXXXXXX' urllib2.urlopen("http://example.com/foo?id=123%s" % API_KEY ).read() What i'm thinking is: Move the API_KEY in a second key.py module importing it on foomodule.py; i would then add key.py on .gitignore file. Same as 1 but using ConfigParser Do you know a good programmatic way to handle this scenario?

• Delay and Inconsistent results using Twitter search API when using "since_id" parameter.

  Hi. We've noticed what seems to be a delay and/or inconsistent results using the Twitter Search API when specifying a sinceid in the param clause. For example: http://search.twitter.com/search?ors=%23b4esummit+@b4esummit+b4esummit&q=&result_type=recent&rpp=100&show_user=true&since_id= Will give the most recent Tweets, but: http://search.twitter.com/search?ors=%23b4esummit+@b4esummit+b4esummit&q=&result_type=recent&rpp=100&show_user=true&since_id= 12642940173 will often not give tweets that are after that ID for several hours (even though they're visible in the first query)... anyone have similar problems?

• Inter-rater agreement (Fleiss' Kappa, Krippendorff's Alpha etc) Java API?

  I am working on building a Question Classification/Answering corpus as a part of my masters thesis. I'm looking at evaluating my expected answer type taxonomy with respect to inter-rater agreement/reliability, and I was wondering: Does anybody know of any decent (preferably free) Java API(s) that can do this? I'm reasonably certain all I need is Fleiss' Kappa and Krippendorff's Alpha at this point. Weka provides a kappa statistic in it's evaluation package, but I think it can only evaluate a classifier and I'm not at that stage yet (because I'm still building the data set and classes). Thanks.

• How to define a new type (class) in Python using C API?

  Hi, I am trying to use the Python C API to define a new class inside a module that would expose certain functionality written in C to Python code. I specifically want to have it in the form of a class and not a set of module functions. However, I can't find anything regarding this particular task in the official documentation. The closest I could find is PyClass_New function (in the Python.h header) but it is not mentioned anywhere in the official docs, so I assume it is not supposed to be used. So, what is the proper way to define a new Python class from C code? Thanks.

• Why does the Win32-API have so many custom types?

  I'm new to the Win32 API and the many new types begin to confuse me. Some functions take 1-2 ints and 3 UINTS as arguments. Why can't they just use ints? What are UINTS? Then, there are those other types: DWORD LPCWSTR LPBOOL Again, I think the "primitive" C types would be enough - why introduce 100 new types? This one was a pain: WCHAR* I had to iterate through it and push_back every character to an std::string as there wasn't another way to convert it to one. Horrible. Why WCHAR? Why reinvent the wheel? They could have just used char* instead, or?

• Does the API call ExitProcess() work OK in VB6 if you follow the MS caveats?

  Microsoft indicates that VB6 doesn't support ExitProcess (to exit and return a value). However, it indicates that this call can fail under certain circumstances (if a thread hasn't been completed, etc.) so I'm wondering whether this call will work OK (consistently :-) as long as you obey the caveats in the article. I could go a step further and call ExitProcess() from the Sub Main or Form which stared the app. Update: after some more reading (I really did research this a bit before asking ) I found a suggestion to use the TerminateProcess API instead. I'm investigating that option. Any thoughts?

• Announcing Windows Azure Mobile Services

  I’m excited to announce a new capability we are adding to Windows Azure today: Windows Azure Mobile Services Windows Azure Mobile Services makes it incredibly easy to connect a scalable cloud backend to your client and mobile applications.  It allows you to easily store structured data in the cloud that can span both devices and users, integrate it with user authentication, as well as send out updates to clients via push notifications. Today’s release enables you to add these capabilities to any Windows 8 app in literally minutes, and provides a super productive way for you to quickly build out your app ideas.  We’ll also be adding support to enable these same scenarios for Windows Phone, iOS, and Android devices soon. Read this getting started tutorial to walkthrough how you can build (in less than 5 minutes) a simple Windows 8 “Todo List” app that is cloud enabled using Windows Azure Mobile Services.  Or watch this video of me showing how to do it step by step. Getting Started If you don’t already have a Windows Azure account, you can sign up for a no-obligation Free Trial.  Once you are signed-up, click the “preview features” section under the “account” tab of the www.windowsazure.com website and enable your account to support the “Mobile Services” preview.   Instructions on how to enable this can be found here. Once you have the mobile services preview enabled, log into the Windows Azure Portal, click the “New” button and choose the new “Mobile Services” icon to create your first mobile backend.  Once created, you’ll see a quick-start page like below with instructions on how to connect your mobile service to an existing Windows 8 client app you have already started working on, or how to create and connect a brand-new Windows 8 client app with it: Read this getting started tutorial to walkthrough how you can build (in less than 5 minutes) a simple Windows 8 “Todo List” app  that stores data in Windows Azure. Storing Data in the Cloud Storing data in the cloud with Windows Azure Mobile Services is incredibly easy.  When you create a Windows Azure Mobile Service, we automatically associate it with a SQL Database inside Windows Azure.  The Windows Azure Mobile Service backend then provides built-in support for enabling remote apps to securely store and retrieve data from it (using secure REST end-points utilizing a JSON-based ODATA format) – without you having to write or deploy any custom server code.  Built-in management support is provided within the Windows Azure portal for creating new tables, browsing data, setting indexes, and controlling access permissions. This makes it incredibly easy to connect client applications to the cloud, and enables client developers who don’t have a server-code background to be productive from the very beginning.  They can instead focus on building the client app experience, and leverage Windows Azure Mobile Services to provide the cloud backend services they require.  Below is an example of client-side Windows 8 C#/XAML code that could be used to query data from a Windows Azure Mobile Service.  Client-side C# developers can write queries like this using LINQ and strongly typed POCO objects, which are then translated into HTTP REST queries that run against a Windows Azure Mobile Service.   Developers don’t have to write or deploy any custom server-side code in order to enable client-side code below to execute and asynchronously populate their client UI: Because Mobile Services is part of Windows Azure, developers can later choose to augment or extend their initial solution and add custom server functionality and more advanced logic if they want.  This provides maximum flexibility, and enables developers to grow and extend their solutions to meet any needs. User Authentication and Push Notifications Windows Azure Mobile Services also make it incredibly easy to integrate user authentication/authorization and push notifications within your applications.  You can use these capabilities to enable authentication and fine grain access control permissions to the data you store in the cloud, as well as to trigger push notifications to users/devices when the data changes.  Windows Azure Mobile Services supports the concept of “server scripts” (small chunks of server-side script that executes in response to actions) that make it really easy to enable these scenarios. Below are some tutorials that walkthrough common authentication/authorization/push scenarios you can do with Windows Azure Mobile Services and Windows 8 apps: Enabling User Authentication Authorizing Users  Get Started with Push Notifications Push Notifications to multiple Users Manage and Monitor your Mobile Service Just like with every other service in Windows Azure, you can monitor usage and metrics of your mobile service backend using the “Dashboard” tab within the Windows Azure Portal. The dashboard tab provides a built-in monitoring view of the API calls, Bandwidth, and server CPU cycles of your Windows Azure Mobile Service.   You can also use the “Logs” tab within the portal to review error messages.  This makes it easy to monitor and track how your application is doing. Scale Up as Your Business Grows Windows Azure Mobile Services now allows every Windows Azure customer to create and run up to 10 Mobile Services in a free, shared/multi-tenant hosting environment (where your mobile backend will be one of multiple apps running on a shared set of server resources).  This provides an easy way to get started on projects at no cost beyond the database you connect your Windows Azure Mobile Service to (note: each Windows Azure free trial account also includes a 1GB SQL Database that you can use with any number of apps or Windows Azure Mobile Services). If your client application becomes popular, you can click the “Scale” tab of your Mobile Service and switch from “Shared” to “Reserved” mode.  Doing so allows you to isolate your apps so that you are the only customer within a virtual machine.  This allows you to elastically scale the amount of resources your apps use – allowing you to scale-up (or scale-down) your capacity as your traffic grows: With Windows Azure you pay for compute capacity on a per-hour basis – which allows you to scale up and down your resources to match only what you need.  This enables a super flexible model that is ideal for new mobile app scenarios, as well as startups who are just getting going.  Summary I’ve only scratched the surface of what you can do with Windows Azure Mobile Services – there are a lot more features to explore.  With Windows Azure Mobile Services you’ll be able to build mobile app experiences faster than ever, and enable even better user experiences – by connecting your client apps to the cloud. • Why is my system freezing when I switch users

  Hello I've recently upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10 64bit. I'm running AMD graphics with the proprietary drivers. I have two user accounts. Mine(administrator) and my girlfriend's(standard) My girlfriend clicks "switch user" from my lock screen and logs in fine. I then try to click "switch user" from her lock screen and everything goes black. Then the monitor blinks on and off with just a single cursor. I have no way to access the terminal, the system is unresponsive and I have to hit the power button. Even ctrl + alt + f4 or ctrl + alt + t doesn't get me a terminal. When I press the power button on my system, it does start printing out the shutdown sequence on the monitor. Here is my .xsession-errors Script for ibus started at run_im. • Project compilation requires a class that is not used anywhere

  When I build with ant my project that uses libgdx, I get a strange error. It says that a class com.google.gwt.dom.client.ImageElement is not found, but it isn't used at all in the code. How can I find what makes this class necessary? Even searching over the whole project doesn't give any results. It says that error is at PixmapTextureAtlas.java:16 (class source), but there is no code that uses that ImageElement class. Adding the library containing com.google.gwt.dom.client.ImageElement class helps, of course, but I'd like to figure out why this class in needed.   Might be the same issue as this previuos question: WCF Proxy but not sure... I have an HTTPS service connfigured to use transport security and, I hope, Windows credentials. The service is only accessed internally (i.e. within the intranet). Authentication failed because the remote party has closed the transport stream. Metadata contains a reference that cannot be resolved: 'https://localhost:8000/WCFTest/CalculatorService/'. An error occurred while making the HTTP request to https://localhost:8000/WCFTest/CalculatorService/. This could be due to the fact that the server certificate is not configured properly with HTTP.SYS in the HTTPS case. This could also be caused by a mismatch of the security binding between the client and the server. The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a send. Authentication failed because the remote party has closed the transport stream. If the service is defined in the current solution, try building the solution and adding the service reference again. I think I'm missing some fundamental basics here. Do I need to set up some certificates? Or should it all just work as it seems to do when I use NetTcpBinding? Thanks

  I have had some problems with authentication in ASP.NET. I'm not used most of the built in authentication in .NET. I gotten some complaints from users using Internet Explorer (any version - may affect other browsers as well) that the login process proceeds but when redirected they aren't authenticated and are bounced back to loginpage (pages that require authentication check if logged in and if not redirect back to loginpage). Can this be a cookie problem? Do I need to check if cookies are enabled by the user? What's the best way to build authentication if you have a custom member table and don't want to use ASP.NET login controls?   I'm trying to get some code I was passed up and running. It appears to use the Hibernate framework. I've gotten past most of the errors tweaking the configuration, but this one has me dead stumped. It's trying to connect to two databases: gameapp and gamelog. Both exist. It seems to have issues connecting to gamelog, but none connecting to gameapp (later in the init, it connects to and loads other DBs just fine). Below, I've pasted the error and exception stack dump. I imaging there's something else in the configs, so I've also included the configuration file for that db. • Juju Zookeeper & Provisioning Agent Not Deployed

  I am using juju with the openstack provider, i expected that when i bootstrap that zookeeper and provisioning agent would get deployed on the bootstrap vm in openstack. This dose not seem to be the case. the bootstrap vm gets deployed but it seems that nothing gets deployed to the VM. See logs below, I may be missing something, also how is it possible to log on the bootstrap vm. Could I manual deploy, if so what do I need to do.
