• Text Terminal Hardware (for Linux)

  Is there any way to obtain a hardware text terminal (preferably small in size) with a screen and a keypad to connect to a Linux machine (preferably via usb)? I'd like to be able to log into a command line and do some work there while simultaneously running a graphical environment on the main display. It seems like there should be some kind of lcd screen and qwerty keypad device designed for this purpose. Does this exist, and how do I get one? Edit: I'd be happy with a small networked device as well, as long as I could get a remote terminal into my computer.

• How do I export HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Console\%SystemRoot%_system32_cmd.exe with regedit from cmd.exe?

  I am trying to export the registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Console\%SystemRoot%_system32_cmd.exe but am unable to do so, probably because of the percent signs. I tried to escape the %-sign with a caret or another %-sign, but this didn't help me: regedit /e c:\temp\cmd.reg "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Console\%%SystemRoot%%_system32_cmd.exe" and regedit /e c:\temp\cmd.reg "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Console\^%SystemRoot^%_system32_cmd.exe" So, is there a way to do what I want. Edit as per ??????? ???????????'s comment: the key is the exact string, with the percent signs. So I don't want %SystemRoot% expanded, but passed to regedit as is.

• Functional Languages that compile to Android's Dalvik VM?

  I have a software problem that fits the functional approach to programming, but the target market will be on the Android OS. I ask because there are functional languages that compile to Java's VM, but Dalvik bytecode != Java bytecode. Alternatively, do you know if the dx utility can intelligently convert the .class files generated from functional languages like Scala? Edit: In order to add a bit more helpfulness to the community, and also to help me choose better, can I refine the question a bit? Have you used any alternate languages with Dalvik? Which ones? What are some "gotchas" (problems) that I might run into? Is performance acceptable? By that, I mean the application still feels responsive to the user. I've never done mobile phone development, but I grew up on constrained devices and I'm under no illusion that there is a cost to using non-standard languages with the platform. I just need to know if the cost is such that I should shoe-horn my approach into default language (i.e. apply functional principles in the OOP language).

• One page using querystring or many folders and pages?

  I have an application where I have the 'core' code in one folder for which there is a virtual directory in the root, such that I can include any core files using /myApp/core/bla.asp. I then have two folders outside of this with a default.asp which currently use the querystring to define what page should be displayed. One page is for general users, the other will only be accessible to users who have permission to manage users / usergroups / permissions. The core code checks the querystring and then checks the permissions for that user. An example of this as it is now is default.asp?action=view&viewtype=list&objectid=server. I am not worried about SEO as this is an internal app and uses Windows Auth. My question is, is it better the way it is now or would it be better to have something like the following: /server/view/list/ /server/view/?id=123 /server/create/ /server/edit/?id=123 /server/remove/?id=123 In the above folders I would have a home page which defines all the variables which are currently determined by the querystring - in /server/create/ for example, I would define the action as 'create', object name as 'server' and so on. In terms of future development, I really have no idea which method would be best. I think the 2nd method would be best in terms of following what page does what but this is such a huge change to make at this stage that I would really like some opinions, preferably based on experience. PS Sorry if the tags are wrong - I am new to this forum and thought this was a bit too much of a discussion for StackOverflow as that is very much right / wrong answer based. (Actually, I think it make us more desirable as programmers and improves computer science) To improve, we read a lot of books; for example, programming style, how to solve problems, how to approach problems, software and algorithms, et al. Can I learn your technique? In other words, if someone gives you a problem, at first step, what are you doing to solve it? I want learn the style in which you approach, analyze, and solve a problem. EDIT: every programmer is a unique instance; each of us approach problems and converge on solutions in our own... idiomatic manner. This manner is sometimes a quirk of training, a bias of tools, but often it is an insightful nugget, a little golden hammer that cracks nuts just slightly faster then others. • How to recover Virtual Machines in Virtualbox?

  For some reason, all of a sudden, all virtual machines are gone from the User Interface in virtual box. I suspect CCleaner has something to do with it, but that's not the point. Both the virtual hardisks and the .xml files for the machines are still in their respective folders. How can I use them to get my virtual machines back into virtualbox? I tried simply creating a new machine from the old virtual hardisks, and it worked with the ubuntu guest, but not with the windows one. Plus, it'd be nice to get my old machines back instead of having to create new ones, that would keep me from having to fix some shortcuts as well as reconfigure shared folders and other stuff. • Database Server Hardware components (order of importance), CPU speed VS CPU cache vs RAM vs DISK

  I am new to database world and would like to know what are crucial hardware specs when it comes to database performance. I have searched the internet and found this so far (In order of decreasing importance): 1) Hard Disk: Get an SSD basically (much more IOPS than spinners) 2) Memory: Get as much as you can afford 3) CPU: For the same $ spent, prefer larger cache size over speed. Are these findings sensible? EDIT: I would like to focus on CPU speed VS CPU cache size. EDIT2: The database is used to store some combination of ints and int arrays with few text fields. There are a lot of Select queries looking for existing entries. If entry is not found, then insert it. I would say most of processing would be trying to find a match across a table with 200 columns and 20k rows. The insert statements are very few. EDIT3: Also, we have a lot of views (basically select queries).

• How to Shrink large Hyper-V VM

  Using Disk2VHD utility I converted my bare-metal OS into Hyper-V VHD - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/ee656415.aspx And I could obtain a huge 190GB VHD file. Apart from performance issues, this VHD worked fine as guest when hosted on Windows Server 200 R2, Hyper-V. Having realized need to keeping only system files and application installations on VHD. I have deleted most of the junk data from this VHD and now it contains only 20-25 GB. But I am not able to shrink the VHD VM. Having done some research, I came to know, this as a limitation of .VHD files. Subsequently I followed these two step using Edit Virtual Hard Wizard on Windows 2012 Box. Convert from VHD to VHDX (took close to 3 hrs.) Compact (Another 4 hrs.) This did not ever shrink the VHDX either. Does Hyper-V does not provide proper support to handle large VHDs or VHDXs whose size are the range of 200GB.

• Access Amazon Linux EC2 over VNC using Guacamole

  I have a t1.micro Amazon Linux AMI instance running. Now, I want to access it using VNC so that I get the GUI. I came across Guacamole and the installation instructions for the server side configuration. So, I get it that we need to setup Apache Tomcat on the Linux machine and then install all the required dependencies, edit the configuration files for Tomcat. But, how do I access it from Windows? What is the client side configuration? From what I understood so far, instead of using a VNC Client like TightVNC or VNCViewer, we can use the Web Browser to access the Amazon EC2 instance. I am using Windows 7 as the client. I would like to access the Amazon Linux AMI (t1.micro instance) over VNC so that I get the GUI.

• Which Linux book for aspiring sysadmin?

  I have a co-worker who insists that he will never buy a book unless it is considered "THE" book. So, in this vein, I thought I'd ask what the ultimate Linux book is. I wouldn't quite call myself a complete beginner since I can get around in Linux in general pretty well. But, beyond that, I'm also looking for a book with an eye towards becoming a Sys Admin someday. I saw a Junior Sys Admin position open up recently but with the requisite 2-3 years experience, I may have to wait a little while longer before I'm ready to apply for such a position. Having said all that, I'll summarize my question: What is the ultimate Linux book for someone who is ok with the basic tasks of getting around in Linux but also wants to aim towards full Sys Admin status someday? • ssh agent forwarding with many identities

  I have setup ssh agent forwarding, and I know it works. I also have many keys setup in the agent. The problem is there are so many keys that I get: Received disconnect from XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX: 2: Too many authentication failures for bob The way around this is to use IdentitiesOnly=yes so that ssh will only send the identity you want it to for the specified host. I've also gotten this implemented and I know it works, without agent forwarding. Now, I'm trying to combine the two features. That is, I want to use agent forwarding, but also be able to specify which identity to use when connecting. Problem is, I can't figure out how to do this. So, I want to connect from box A through box B to box C. Box A has all of the identity files and the ssh agent running. I want to edit box A or B's ssh config file(s) to use a specific identity that exists in box A's agent (which is being forwarded).

• What design patterns are the worst or most narrowly defined?

  For every programming project, Managers with past programming experience try to shine when they recommend some design patterns for your project. I like design patterns when they make sense or if you need a scalbale solution. I've used Proxies, Observers and Command patterns in a positive way for example, and do so every day. But I'm really hesitant to use say a Factory pattern if there's only one way to create an object, as a factory might make it all easier in the future, but complicates the code and is pure overhead. So, my question is in respect to my future career and my answer to manager types throwing random pattern-names around: Which design patterns did you use, that threw you back overall? Which are the worst design patterns, that you shouldn't have a look at if it's not that only single situation where it makes sense (read: which design patterns are very narrowly defined)? (It's like I was looking for the negative reviews of an overall good product of amazon to see what bugged people most in using design patterns). And I'm not talking about Anti-Patterns here, but about Patterns that are usually thought of as "good" patterns. Edit: As some answered, the problem is most often that patterns are not "bad" but "used wrong". If you know patterns, that are often misused or even difficult to use, they would also fit as an answer.

  What is the best option to restrict access to ESXi machine so that it could be managed using VSphere client from only certain hosts? I know there is no built-in firewall and everyone recommends placing an ESXi machine behind a firewall, but when this is not an option... Is there any other option like using hosts.allow/deny or anything else? Or I better use ESX instead of ESXi? Edit: In the given circumstances, I am not able to add any additional hardware or use things like managed switches.

• OS X Money Management Software

  I recently moved from Windows to a Mac, but I still have to keep Virtualbox and Windows installation on the machine to use Quicken. iBank looked promising, but I had problems importing my data from Quicken. I would switch to Mint if they would allow you to enter transactions manually, but the lack of that feature is a deal breaker. (I use Quicken primarily to track uncleared transactions, with the bonus of reporting on past spending.) Is there any other software I should try that will be able to import at least most of my old data from Quicken? Edit: For what it's worth, I never did find anything else. Quicken Essentials for Mac was released this year, but doesn't handle investments well from what I hear. I'm now on Quicken 2010 under XP running inside Virtualbox. It's not ideal, but it seems to be the only thing around right now that meets my needs.

• Experience the new Bootloader of CE7 VirtualPC BSP - Display Resolution Override

  The CE 7 (aka. Windows Embedded Compact) provides many new features, a new VirtualPC is one of them and as a replacement of Device Emulator in CE 6.   The bootloader of VPC BSP utilize a new introduced framework in CE7, the BLDR (not the BIOSLOADER!) It provides many rich and advanced feature, I will introduce more detail in my future posts. Today, I am going to introduce a basic usage: setting the display resolution. One of the benefit os using the BLDR is it provides interactive user interface, no DOS enviroment required, so user can change the setting on the console. It is especially useful on VPC: if you are not using Win7, edit a file in VHD could take some effort! In the Boot menu, you can select [5] Display Settings. There are a couples of sub menu allow you to change resolution, bpp and etc. As it is very straight forward, I won't go through each option except to the Option [3] "Change Viewable Display Region". The resolution it provides depends on the BIOS (VPC is a PC compatible device), and the minimum resolution it provides is 640x480. But what if user need smaller resolution or any non-standard resolution for whatever reason, it comes the use of "Change Viewable Display Region". User can use it to create a reduced display region. e.g. 240x320 on 640x480 screen. Also you can alter the platform\virtualpc\src\boot\bldr\config.c to add a non-standard resolution (e.g. 480x272) to displayMode array. Another solution in case of you don't want to rebuilt and replace bootloader is to alter SaveVGAArgs in platform\common\src\x86\common\io\ioctl.c to overwrite cxDisplayScreen and cyDisplayScreen setting to whatever resolution you want.

• sudo midnight commander

  I sometimes start midnight commander as superuser with the command sudo mc to do some operations on the current working directory as superuser. But this results in ~/.mc having the wrong permissions, which I need to fix manually. Any solution? Edit: I accepted an answer. I want to further add, that .mc is a directory, so my solution goes like this: $ cd ~ ~$ sudo chown -R mit.mit .mc ~$ chmod 775 .mc ~$ cd .mc ~$ chmod -R 664 .mc ~/.mc$ chmod 775 cedit It seems not to be a good idea after installing mc to use sudo on its first start .

• Serve up PC hard drive as USB mass storage

  Is there a software package available that can serve up a hard-drive internal to a PC and make it available over USB to other USB Master nodes as mass storage? Ex: take your C: or /dev/hda drive on a PC (let's call the computer PC-A), and run a driver program which makes your C: or /dev/hda drive available to external devices as USB mass storage. When you'd hook up another PC (PC-B) to PC-A via USB, it would detect a USB mass storage device, which is C: or /dev/hda on PC-A. Is this even possible? EDIT: I know that there are other ways of making data on a drive available between two different computers (eg. putting PC-A's hdd in a USB-drive-enclosure, or having PC-A make the hdd available via a network share). But I'd like to know if the method that I describe above is even technically possible.

• How do I get google to see keywords on a one page web application site?

  I'm going to have to link to the web site to explain this, http://www.diagram.ly, it's a free service, so I hope this doesn't break advertising rules. Basically, it's a one page web application, I don't want to create a web site for it. Some background text loads and if JavaScript is enabled, the web application itself then loads. The problem is that Google only seems to be picking up the title of the page and the text on the footer, so the site only appear on Google search for very limited text (based on the title and meta description mostly). I was hoping that search engines would pick up on the background text and index that. The text is factual, not keyword stuffed. Yahoo seems to pick up the text, just not Google. Does anyone have any experience of how Google would view such a site and where I could put the text for a better result? Edit I should mention that Google Webmaster Tools lists the site keywords as "Component, diagramly, feed, mxgraph, share and twitter". Basically the footer and little else.

• Mark as read on delete in Outlook?

  I'd like Outlook to mark any messages I delete to be marked as read. For bonus points, I'd like it to only do this on messages that I have opened/previewed before pressing delete since this means I've looked at the content and chosen to delete it. I know I can set it to mark as read after x seconds when I'm looking at it, that's not what I want. I also know that I can move off the message & back on to it or right click to mark as read - still not what I want. I'm using Outlook 2007 in case that matters. [Edit: I just found I can at least mark as read with a keyboard shortcut: Ctrl-Q, but again, it'd be nice to not have to do this. More shortcuts here.]

• Apache htaccess results in files being downloaded instead of displayed

  So I had this "beautiful" website that did exactly what I wanted it to do. Then I shut down my PC, reboot and...the pages just download now instead of being displayed. I re-installed XAMPP and launched Apache again and I was able to identify the .htaccess file as the cause of the problem. I'm using HTML Sites with SSI Elements on a Apache web server. • How to promote code reuse and documentation?

  As a team lead of about 10+ developers, I would want to promote code reuse. We have written a lot of code-- a lot of them are repetitive over the past few years. The problem now is that a lot of these code are just duplicate of some other code or a slight variation of them. I have started the movement ( discussion) on how to make code into components so that they can be reused for the future projects, but the problem is that I afraid the new developers or other developers who are ignorant of the components will just go forward and write their own thing. Is there anyway to remind the developers to reuse the components/ improve the documentation/ contribute to the underlying component instead of duplicating the existing code and tweaking on it or just write their own? How to make the components easily discover-able, easily usable so that everyone will use it? Edit: I think every developer knows about the benefit of reusable components and wants to use them, it's just that we don't know how to make them discoverable.
