• Anyone have experience developing with ESQL/C for INFORMIX-SQL?

  Does anyone have experience developing with ESQL/C for INFORMIX-SQL, as in calling C funcs within "Perform" screen generator and "ACE" report writer? I have ISQL without ESQL/C. I experimented compiling a perform screen, where in the instructions section I put "ON BEGINNING CALL userfunc() END" and although I don't have ESQL/C, the Perform screen successfully compiled without errors!.. Apparently, the compiler didn't reject the C call even though there's no ESQL/C or C program linked.

• What is the difference between Inversion of Control and Dependency injection in C++?

  I've been reading recently about DI and IoC in C++. I am a little confused (even after reading related questions here on SO) and was hoping for some clarification. It seems to me that being familiar with the STL and Boost leads to use of dependency injection quite a bit. For example, let's say I made a function that found the mean of a range of numbers: template <typename Iter> double mean(Iter first, Iter last) { double sum = 0; size_t number = 0; while (first != last) { sum += *(first++); ++number; } return sum/number; }; Is this dependency injection? Inversion of control? Neither? Let's look at another example.   I have two tables: Standards and Service Offerings. A Standard can have multiple Service Offerings. Each Standard can have a different number of Service Offerings associated to it. What I need to be able to do is write a view that will return some common data and then list the service offerings on one line. For example: Standard Id | Description | SO #1 | SO #2 | SO #3 | ... | SO #21 | SO Count 1 | One | A | B | C | ... | G | 21 2 | Two | A | | | ... | | 1 3 | Three | B | D | E | ... | | 3 I have no idea how to write this. The number of SO columns is set to a specific number (21 in this case), so we cannot exceed past that. Any ideas on how to approach this? A place I started is below.   I want to use HideMyAss VPN (hidemyass.com) on Ubuntu Linux to route only HTTP (ports 80 & 443) traffic to the HideMyAss VPN server, and leave all the other traffic (MySQL, SSH, etc.) alone. I'm running Ubuntu on AWS EC2 instances. The problem is that when I try and run the default HMA script, I suddenly can't SSH into the Ubuntu instance anymore and have to reboot it from the AWS console. I suspect the Ubuntu instance will also have trouble connecting to the RDS MySQL database, but haven't confirmed it. • How to systematically generate images from data?

  I work for a performing arts nonprofit. We have seating charts for each of the theaters we work with; each seating chart shows the number of sections, the shape of each section, and the number of rows in each section. We'd like to create dynamic seating charts based on this info. We'd like them to look/feel kinda like this: http://www.fansnap.com/tickets/177754-on. But the tricky part is we'd like to be able to store all the info about each theater (the section names, shape/size of each section, and number of rows in each section) as data and then build a system that reads this data and uses it to create a dynamic map. I'm a life-long web developer, but I don't have have any experience with a difficult graphics problem like this. I realize it's a complex problem and I don't expect anyone to give me a complete answer here, but I would love direction on where I should be looking for more info. Is what I'm describing possible? Does this sort of technique have a name? Where can I learn more about how to accomplish this? What software should I use? Any info would be helpful.

  If you go to the "Variable Grid System" generator and have: column width = 20 number of columns = 12 and gutter width = 60 ...the system provides a content width of 900 and a full width of 960. http://www.spry-soft.com/grids/ Now, this is all fine and dandy in Firefox, Chrome, and even IE6, but when you load those settings in IE8, you end up with the actual full width as 1000px, not 960px. Has this issue been encountered before?

The number of required custom fields is known, but what kind of attribute is mapped to the column is available to the user E.g. I am putting down a hypothetical scenario below Say you have a laptop which stores 50 attribute values for every laptop record. Each laptop attributes are created by the some admin who creates the laptop. A user created a laptop product lets say lap1 with attributes String, String, numeric, numeric, String Second user created laptop lap2 with attributes String,numeric,String,String,numeric Currently there data in our design gets persisted as following Laptop Table Id Name field1 field2 field3 field4 field5 1 lap1 lappy lappy 12 13 lappy 2 lap2 lappy2 13 lappy2 lapp2 12 This example kind of simulates our requirement and our design Now here if somebody is lookinup records for lap2 table doing a comparison on field2, We need to apply TO_NUMBER. select * from laptop where name='lap2' and TO_NUMBER(field2) < 15 TO_NUMBER fails in some cases when query plan decides to first apply to_number instead of the other filter.   I'm not too good with SQL and I know there's probably a much more efficient way to accomplish what I'm doing here, so any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance for your input! I'm writing a short program for the local school high school. At this school, juniors and seniors who have driver's licenses and cars can opt to drive to school rather than ride the bus. Each driver is assigned exactly one space, and their DLN is used as the primary key of the driver's table. Makes, models, and colors of cars are stored in a separate cars table, related to the drivers table by the License plate number field. My idea is to have a single search box on the main GUI of the program where the school secretary can type in who/what she's looking for and pull up a list of results. Thing is, she could be typing a license plate number, a car color, make, and model, someone driver's name, some student driver's DLN, or a space number. As the programmer, I don't know what exactly she's looking for, so a couple of options come to mind for me to build to be certain I check everywhere for a match: 1) preform a couple of SELECT * FROM [tablename] SQL statements, one per table and cram the results into arrays in my program, then search across the arrays one element at a time with regex, looking for a matched pattern similar to the search term, and if I find one, add the entire record that had a match in it to a results array to display on screen at the end of the search. 2) take whatever she's looking for into the program as a scaler and prepare multiple select statements around it, such as SELECT * FROM DRIVERS WHERE DLN = $Search_Variable SELECT * FROM DRIVERS WHERE First_Name = $Search_Variable SELECT * FROM CARS WHERE LICENSE = $Search_Variable and so on for each attribute of each table, sticking the results into a results array to show on screen when the search is done. Is there a cleaner way to go about this lookup without having to make her specify exactly what she's looking for? Possibly some kind of SQL statement I've never seen before?

  Hi, I have a number of types of data fields on an input form, for example, a web page. Some fields are like, must be an email address, must be a number, must be a number between, must have certain characters. Basically, the list is undefinable. I wish to come up with a generic way of validating the data inputed. I thought I would use regex to validate the data. The fields which need validation would be related to a "regex expression" and a "regex error message" stating what the field should contain. My current mock up has that when the match count is zero, that would signify an error and to display the message. While still a white belt regex designer I have come to understand that in certain situations that it is difficult to write a regex which results in a match count of zero for every case. A complex regex case I looked for help on was Link Here. The forum post was a disaster because I confused people helping me. But one of the statements said that it was difficult to make a regex with a match count of zero meaning the input data was invalid; that the regex was very difficult to write that for. Does anyone have comments or suggestions on this generic validation system I am trying to create? thanks

• Developing a 2D Game for Windows Phone 8

  I would like to develop a 2D game for Windows Phone 8. I am a professional Application Developer by day and this seems like a fun hobby. But I have been disapointed trying to get going. It seems that 2D games (far and away the majority of games) do not have any real support. It seems the Windows Phone makers did not include support for Direct2D. So unless you are planning to make a fully 3D app, you are out of luck. So, if you just wanted to make a nice 2D app, these are your choices: Write your game using Xaml and C# (Performance Issues?) Write your game using Direct3D and but only draw on one plane. Use the DirectX Took Kit found on codeplex. It allows you to use the dying XNA framework's API for development. Number 3 seems the best for my game. But I hate to waste my time learning the XNA api when Microsoft has clearly stated that it is not going to be supported going forward. Number 2 would work, but 3D development is really hard. I would rather not have to do all that to get the 2D effect. (Assuming Direct2D is easier. I have yet to look into that.) Number 1 seems the easiest, but I worry that my app will not run well if it is based off of xaml rendering rather than DirectX. What is the suggested method from Microsoft? And who decided that 2D games were going to get shortchanged?

• What happens when we say "listen to a port" ?

  Hi, When we start a server application, we always need to speicify the port number it listens to. But how is this "listening mechanism" implemented under the hood? My current imagination is like this: The operating system associate the port number with some buffer. The server application's responsibiligy is to monitor this buffer. If there's no data in this buffer, the server application's listen operation will just block the application. When some data arrives from the wire, the operating system will know that check the data and see if it is targed at this port number. And then it will fill the buffer. And then OS will notify the blocked server application and the server application will get the data and continue to run. Question is: If the above scenario is correct, how could the opearting system know there's data arriving from wire? It cannot be a busy pooling. Is it some kind of interrupt-based mechanism? If there's too much data arriving and the buffer is not big enough, will there be data loss? Is the "listen to a port" operation really a blocking operation? Many thanks.

The user is created and insert with no issues. I've checked that the Role collection, a field on the user, is being populated with the proper rolekey before the Session.Save() is called. There is no exception thrown as well.

• os.walk in python not running with cmd line parameter passed as path

  Hello, I needed to find the number of files in a folder on the system. This is what i used: file_count = sum((len(f) for _, _, f in os.walk('path'))) This works fine when we specify the path as a string in quotes, but when I enter a variable name that holds the path, type(file_count) is a generator object, and hence cannot be used as an integer. How to solve this and why does this happen?

• JavaScript: why `null == 0` is false?

  I had to write a routine that increments the value of a variable by 1 if it is a number, or assigns 0 to the variable if it is not a number. The variable can be incremented by the expression, or be assigned null. No other write access to the variable is allowed. So, the variable can be in three states: it is 0, a positive integer, or null. My first implementation was: v >= 0 ? v += 1 : v = 0 (Yes, I admit that v === null ? v = 0 : v += 1 is the exact solution, but I wanted to be concise then.) It failed since null >= 0 is true. I was confused, since if a value is not a number, an numeric expression involving it must be false always. Then I found that null is like 0, since null + 1 == 1, 1 / null == Infinity, Math.pow(2.718281828, null) == 1, ... Strangely enough, however, null == 0 is evaluated to false. I guess null is the only value that makes the following expression false: (v == 0) === (v >= 0 && v <= 0) So why null is so special in JavaScript?

  Ages old question: You have 2 hypothetical eggs, and a 100 story building to drop them from. The goal is to have the least number of guaranteed drops that will ensure you can find what floor the eggs break from the fall. You can only break 2 eggs. Using a 14 drop minimum method, I need help writing code that will allow me to calculate the following: Start with first drop attempt on 14th floor. If egg breaks then drop floors 1-13 to find the floor that causes break. ElseIf egg does not break then move up 13 floors to floor number 27 and drop again. If egg breaks then drop floors 15-26 starting on 15 working up to find the floor egg breaks on. ElseIf egg does not break then move up 12 floors to floor number 39 and drop again. etc. etc. The way this increases is as follows 14+13+12+11+10+9+8+7+6+5+4+3+2+1 So always adding to the previous value, by one less. I have never written a sorting algorithm before, and was curious how I might go about setting this up in a much more efficient way than a mile long of if then statements. My original idea was to store values for the floors in an array, and pull from that, using the index to move up or down and subtract or add to the variables. The most elegant solution would be a recursive function that handled this for any selected floor, 1-100, and ran the math, with an output that shows how many drops were needed in order to find that floor. Maximum is always 14, but some can be done in less.
