  I found this site: www.discountasp.net They seem cheap enough and have a track record. I decided to host my site with them. Here's where I'm confused. I host the application (my website) with them and they give me an IP address, right? Users can visit my site by typing in that IP address right? (Of course once I move the index file and create a defauly web folder, etc.) Next step is buying a domain name right? Like www.mysite.com, right? Is this the way it's done, or am I doing it wrong?

  Hi, How can I have it where I have one IP address that sits on the Internet but many web names? For example, when a hosting company has a shared IP but I get unlimited domain names (along with everyone else on that box). I have a box on the Internet but I want to point to another machine that holds a different website when someone types in the different www...(it's sitting right next to it in just a different box). Is that all subdomaining? Thank you. EDIT: I am the hosting company.

  I have a ~22MB Power Point Presentation (2007) that I need to be presented on a website for viewing. The file contains audio over several slides and some embedded images. What is the best practices or best way to present the presentation so it gets delivered the quickest and best quality to users? Some ideas I've thought of are: Somehow compress the file (.wav audio files, images) into a smaller presentation and save it as a Power Point Show (pps) so users can download it and use the free Power Point viewer? Convert it to video format (.avi) or something and stream it off the web? (Hopefully freeware) Save it as a web page? (but then it's only viewable in IE I believe)

  We all know how to enable a website using apache on linux. I'm pretty sure that we all agree on using the a2ensite command. Unfortunately there is no default equivalent command comes with Nginx, but it did happens that I installed some package on ubuntu that allowed me to enable/disable sites and list them. The problem is I don't remember the name of this package. Anybody knows what I'm talking about? Please tell me name of this package and the command name.

  I need to be able to track Web Sites visited on a computer and send them to an email address on a daily basis. Keylogger software seems like too much, I want something lightweight that simply monitors websites visited and forwards them on. I was hoping for freeware, but if it's cheap/simple and easy to use I'm willing to pay. I know similar questions have been asked about website traffic monitoring, but it's not quite the same thing, and I can't seem to find an answer to this question anywhere. Thank you ahead of time.

  I'm running a website, and would like to get a better idea how many subscribers I have. I can check the number of subscribers on Google Reader for my two feeds (RSS and Atom). I also have access to my server logs, so I sometimes collect all the IP addresses that access the feeds over a month or so and do a uniq. Is that an accurate way of doing this? Are there other feed aggregators that I need to take into account? Any pitfalls when just going by IP address? I've also thought about embedding an image in the feeds to get a better count. But do all feed readers load images automatically?

  I'm having troubles using SSL for 2 different websites on my IIS 7 server. Please see my setup below: website1: my.corporate.portal.com SSL certificate for website1: *.corporate.portal.com https/443 binded to my.corporate.portal.com website2: client.portal.com SSL certificate issued for: client.portal.com When I try to bind https in IIS7 with the client's certificate, I don't have an option to put host name(grayed out) and as soon as I select 'client.portal.com' cert, I'm getting the following error in IIS: At least one other site is using the same HTTPS binding and the binding is configured with a different certificate. Are you sure that you want to reuse this HTTPS binding and reassign the other site or sites to use the new certificate? If I click 'yes' my.corporate.portal.com website stops using the proper SSL cert. Could you suggest something?

• Is Page-Loading Time Relevant?

  Take this (ServerFault) page for instance. It has about 20 elements. When the last of these has loaded, the page is deemed "loaded"--but not before. This is certainly the protocol used by our testing service (which is among the small group of well-known vendors that offer that sort of service). Obviously this method is based on a clear, definite endpoint--therefore it's easy to apply w/ concomitant reliability. I think it's also the metric used by the popular Firefox plugin, 'YSlow.' For my employer's website, nearly always the last-to-load items are tracking code, tracking pixels, etc., so from the user's point of view--their perception--the page was "loaded" well before it had actually loaded based on the criterion used by our testing service (15-20% is a rough estimate). I'm sure i'm not the first person to consider this nor the first to wonder if it is causing micro-optimization while ignoring overall system-level, or user-perceived performance. So my question is, are there are other more practical (yet still reasonably precise) measures of page loading time?

• Wireless only connects to Google

  I am using a netgear wireless router to connect to create a wireless network. When connected to the router via an Ethernet cable everything works correctly. When connecting to the router via wireless only Google can be accessed. I've done searches via Google using random words to make sure that it is not a cached page, and these all work. However, trying to connect to any non Google domain the page fails to load. I've accessed the connection with two different laptops, both are running Windows Vista. The network connection is strong on both, but the issue persists for both. Edit: I have configured the wireless networks name and password, and connect to that using the credentials I have defined. I am sure I am not connecting to a neighbors wireless network. Edit2: Typing in the direct IP address for CNN.com ( http://157.166.255.19 ) would not resolve.

• Windows 8 Google Contacts Sync doesn't sync custom fields

  I installed Windows 8 Pro a couple days ago. In the in-built "People" app, since there were options to sync contacts with several third party services like Facebook, Linkedin etc., I wanted to sync my Google contacts to the People app. The sync was successful and all my contacts migrated properly. However, the age old problem of custom fields not syncing between Google/Apple/Windows apps is still present. If a field label in my Google contacts is 'iPhone', it doesn't sync! Nor do any other custom fields except 'home' or 'work' with numbers. Is there a solution to this or any other workaround?

• Unable to access my own websites from our home

  Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but i'm gonna have a shot at it. I host a couple of websites with a webhost in the Netherlands. For a couple of days now, i've been unable to connect to them from my home network. When using tracert in the cmd screen, i'm getting a timeout after about 4-5 hops. It seems fine accessing the website from anywhere, except my home network. Other PC's around the house also fail to open the websites. I've tried 'flushing my DNS' as seen in some other topics, but to no avail just yet. One of the websites: http://bit.ly/1hbqs4J I've contacted my host about it as well, but no response yet.   I've been looking around for an RSS reader that can handle more than 1 google account? I have multiple gmail addresses for different things in life. I separate mails this way and also RSS feeds. This works fine on google reader, but i would like to have a desktop app that can handle multiple accounts, like Thunderbird can handle multiple mail accounts. All the desktop clients I've found so far ask you for 1 google account and that's where it ends. You can't add anymore.

• Chromium never stops loading iGoogle

  I almost always keep a tab open on google.com/ig. Recently I've noticed that the "loading" animation for that tab never stops spinning, even though the page appears to be fully loaded. Even though there's no direct problem with this, I find the animation really distracting and to be honest it's driving me crazy. I've done a few things to try to figure this out. I've removed every single one of my gadgets (so my igoogle is blank), but that made no difference. I've disabled adblock and scriptno. nothing. I've watched the network console in developer tools to look for resources that haven't finished loading, but it looks like everything is done. I'm all out of ideas. For my sanity's sake, please help.

• Comparing outgoing mail options, self hosted VS google apps in my situation

  I am setting up a small site that has the need to be able to programmatically send mail from time to time. Password resets and things like that. I'm already using google apps to handle my domains email, so now i'm left with the decision between setting up basic SMTP services on my server to send "password reset mails and things like that" OR instead to have the software use google apps to send mail. I like the google apps option as it's less stuff to worry about and seems to fit my needs, i'm trying to figure out what the downsides would be? Thanks for any thoughts

  I'm testing out the Google Chrome Speed Tracer on a few common web pages and taking a look through the results. One thing I'm not sure I understand is what the "Request Timing" and "Response Timing" properties of resources are actually measuring. Initially I thought Request Timing must measure the time from a request for a resource being sent and when that request arrived at the server. However, I then wondered how the Speed Tracer would actually have any way of measuring this. Furthermore, the Response Timing that I'm getting for resources tends to be far less than the Request Timing (e.g. 500ms request, 1ms response), which is a little bit suss. So is anyone able to explain exactly what Request Timing and Response Timing are measuring?

• .htacces file. Can I block access to a directory without blocking access to the files within it?

  I'm building a website, but I'm not entirely sure what to do with the .htaccess file. Say for example I have a folder called pages which holds all my pages, can i deny access to someone if they type in www.website.com/pages so that they can't see the directory? I've tried putting the .htaccess file in the pages folder with the "deny from all" line and although it denies access, it's also denying access to the actual pages. Is there a way to do this without denying access to see the pages on the website, just denying access to the directory? Sorry if this doesn't make much sense, I'm so confused lol.   Hi, i have a .net mobile web site where i use sesion state and due to nature of mobile networks/phones (not all supports session cookies) i had to use <sessionState cookieless="AutoDetect"/> It works fine but because each new session redirected with "AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1" i have a feeling that google won't like this. Here is a small sample from my server logs supportForumReadTopic.aspx id=38 80 - 66.249.71.80 Mozilla/5.0+(compatible;+Googlebot/2.1;++http://www.google.com/bot.html) 302 supportForumReadTopic.aspx id=38&AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1 Mozilla/5.0+(compatible;+Googlebot/2.1;++http://www.google.com/bot.html) 200 As you see each new hit from google will get 302 to itself. I have a genericmozilla5.browser file where i define google bot as cookie supporting browser in order to get .net not to use cookieless urls but not sure how this 302 would effect me. Any one had smilar exprience? Any ideas? Suggestions? Thanks

All events for these links are being stored under the category: "mortgage" When I look at the total number of pageviews for this mortgage page and the total number of events for the event category "mortgage", the number of pageviews is 10%-20% higher.   I'm mostly interested in translation, but I'm sure someone else is looking for info on the other features of the language API (namely transliteration and virtual keyboard). I see alot of pages on the web about the limitations of the Language API, but I don't see anything about this in the official docs. Links to where this is described in the official docs would be greatly appreciated. Also, I'm guessing that the best solution will involve breaking up longer texts and translating each piece.
