• What frameworks are available for cross device 2d game development?

  Hi, I'm about to embark on a 2D gaming project. Initially, I'll be targeting iPhone and Facebook, but would like to expand the rollout to include Android (and possibly Windows Phone) in a future phase. Flash and Unity seem to be the most likely suspects, but is one better than the other? Are there pros/cons that may not be obvious at first glance? Are there frameworks that I have not considered? I am primarily a .NET developer, so the Unity C# integration is appealling. But I also have experience with AS3, JavaScript and Objective-C. Rich

• Wireless networks are not detected at start up in Ubuntu 12.04

  I have recently (three four days ago) installed Ubuntu 12.04 via windows installer i.e. wubi.exe. After the installation completed wireless and Ethernet were both working well. But after restart wireless networks didn't show up while in the network manager both networking and wireless were enabled. Though sometimes after boot it did show the networks available but very rarely. So I went through various posts regarding wireless issues in Ubuntu 12.04 and tried so many things but ended up in nothing satisfactory. I have Broadcom 4313 LAN network controller and brcmsmac driver. Then relying on some suggestions I tried to install bcm-wl driver but couldn't install due to some error in jockeyl.log file. Then i tried fresh installation of the same driver but still could resolve the startup issues with wireless. Then again I reinstalled Ubuntu inside windows using wubi installer. This time again same problem occurred after boot. But this time I successfully installed wl driver before disturbing file-system files of Ubuntu. But again the same issue. This time I noticed some new things: If I inserted Ethernet/LAN cable before startup then wireless networks are available and of course LAN(wired) networks also work. but if i don't plug in cable before startup and then plug it after startup then it didn't detect Ethernet network neither wireless. So I haven't noticed it before that LAN along with wifi also doesn't work after startup. But if i suspend the session and make it sleep and again login then it worked. I tried it every time that WLAN worked perfectly. But still i m unable to resolve that startup problem. Each time i boot first I have to suspend it once then only networks are available. It irritates me each time i reboot/boot my lappy. So please help out of this problem. Any ideas/help regarding this issue would be highly appreciated. • bluetooth on acer travelmate laptop can send only, but don't want to receive

  I have a acer travelmate 5720 laptop that runs ubuntu 13.04. It has built in bluetooth. For what I can see is that Ubuntu did pick up the bluetooth and the necessary bluetooth drivers is installed. But I'm only able to send files from this laptop to bluetooth devices, but for some reason I can't do the same visa verso to the laptop, for example if I try to send a file from a blackberry 9360 it can't send, tells me failed to find service. It kicks out. I try to find more drivers to install, tried a few in ubuntu software center, but no success. I even uninstalled all bluetooth drivers and reinstalled it, but no success, it doesn't pick up any phone anymore. Please assist me.

• choppy sound with random popping 13.04

  I was hoping some one could help me figure out why my audio is popping randomly. I just got some new speakers and it was popping previously, but I was using monitor speakers so it wasn't really noticeable. Now I have some Bose speakers hooked up via an analog cable. It is not the speakers because my Android phone plays audio fine. When I open the sound settings window the popping happens at exactly the same time a third sound device is displayed very quickly and then disappears. This keeps happening at about 30 second intervals. Any help is appreciate. If you need more details just let me know how to get them.

  On a site that I'm working on, I'm trying to find ways of enforcing a one-person, one-account rule. In general, we'd like to do this by providing options to authenticate users with third-party services that provide this assurance. For example, it's possible to authenticate with Facebook and check whether the user is considered "verified" by Facebook (which means they must have provided either a phone number or credit card). This is roughly the level of identity verification we require--we're not doing banking or anything like that. But we want to give the user options. My question is, who else, besides Facebook, provides this? (uncertain of the proper SE forum, please comment if there's a better SE site to ask this)

  I use Banshee to manage & play my music (most of which came from emusic and CDs). I consistently have problems getting songs from the same album to appear as one album. This is particularly a problem with compilations, i.e. multiple artists on the same album. When I transfer songs to my Android phone (Nexus S), this issue follows. How do I edit files so that Banshee correctly identifies all the songs as belonging to the same album? I am using the latest Banshee via the unstable PPA.

• Where to draw the line between front end and back end

  I was recently contracted to develop a smarty theme for an automated SOHO phone answering service. The team who had built the backend wouldn't allow me access to any of the back end nor tell me anything about it, their smarty set up, smarty plugins, data base interface api, server set-up, nothing. Nor could I have access to the server nor a beta domain, basically zero co-operation. So I set up a local server with Smarty and built the template based on what I guessed would be their best practice, commented my code like crazy, wrote all the needed javascript, css, and template files. Then I sent them packaged to the backend team and hoped for the best. With half of a project team failing to cooperate or even communicate I am now concerned that they may reply saying that everything is wrong and they may refuse to implement the new front end. I'm curious to know if others encounter this type of situation and what you may have done to protect yourselves.

  I'm running cm9 ics on my Galaxy Note and i tried anything i could find googleing around but to no result, if i look on the phone in usb settings there is the option for mass storage but it's grey and therefore not selectable I don`t know what the problem is but i saw somwhere that it might be an old version of libmtp so i tried to install libmtp 1.1.3 with ./configure make make install but even after when i try mtp-detect it gives me libmtp 1.1.1 is it normal? anyway when i run mtp-detect here is what it gives me libmtp version: 1.1.1 Listing raw device(s) Device 0 (VID=04e8 and PID=6860) is a Samsung GT-P7310/P7510/N7000/I9100/Galaxy Tab 7.7/10.1/S2/Nexus/Note. • Why would a web site keep my signup information for a limited time only?

  I have just created account at (some web service, well, actually it was Transifex, a localization service). Registration form requested typical things: accont name, e-mail adress, password (twice), and, optional company name and phone number. What confused me was this sentence on confirmation page (the one right after submitting the form): We will store your signup information for 7 days on our server. Can anybody explain what does this mean? What exactly they are referring to by "signup information", if it's something that should be kept for only 7 days? Or is my account going to be destroyed after that time? (Well, that could make sense for some special services, but not for this one.)

• How is Sencha Touch performing on Android in practice ?

  Hi I'm just about to start a project using Sencha Touch, and just done some minor testing on my HTC desire device. All tutorial videos at Vimeo seems to be using an iPhone emulator running on a Mac. Im not sure how fast this emulator is compared to a real iPhone device or even an real Android device, but from what i have experienced, it seems that my HTC desire is not performing that nicly as this emulator. All animations (sliding, fading, etc) seems abit laggy. You can easily notice that the FPS is much less than on the Vimeo videos. HTC desire is a relativly new and modern Android 2.2 phone, running with decent hardware, so im wondering if Sencha Touch is "ready" for the Android platform. Anybody with practical experience with Android and Sencha Touch ?

  Recently I read a post by someone who felt the Microsoft MVP program had failed. My local experience with the MVP program would tend for me to disagree. On Saturday I attended a free Windows Phone 7 event organized by Robert MacLean and Rudi Grobler both of whom are local MVP’s. First of all, kudos to them for organizing the event which included a free lunch and flash stick and had some great content for a free event. Secondly, this is not the first time that either of these two MVP’s have organized events. They are active in the community, present at the majority of local events and are always approachable and give an “honest” opinion. For me, that is what an MVP stands for and at least in my region I feel that the MVP program is a real success.

• Possible automated Bing Ads fraud?

  I run a website that generates life insurance leads. The site is very simple a) there is a form for capturing the user's details, life insurance requirements etc b) A quote comparison feature We drive traffic to our site using conventional Google Adwords and Bing Ads campaigns. Since the 6th January we have received 30-40 dodgy leads which have the following in common: All created between 2 and 8 AM Phone number always in the format "123 1234 1234' Name, Date Of Birth, Policy details, Address all seem valid and are unique across the leads Email addresses from "disposable" email accounts including dodgit.com, mailinator.com, trashymail.com, pookmail.com Some leads come from the customer form, some via the quote comparison feature All come from different IP addresses We get the keyword information passed through from the URLs All look to be coming from Bing Ads All come from Internet Explorer v7 and v8 The consistency of the data and the random IP addresses seem to suggest an automated approach but I'm not sure of the intent. We can handle identifying these leads within our database but is there anyway of stopping this at the Ad level i.e. before the click through.

  This is Easter weekend, and the end of the school year is looming closer! Our developer sessions at WashU end today. Students will turn their spare time focus to finals and getting home for the summer. Over this short course of time, we’ve had a bit over 50 students show some level of interest in developing apps for Windows Phone. Currently the total apps submitted by students is approaching about 20. Several students have received new phones as part of their agreement to submit applications.
