• Executing Secondary Applications

  I have an application I am attempting to make "portable". The application contains a lot of secondary utility functions that I would like to execute on external files(from the app). I tried adding them in the build process but I didn't get any "Executables" for them(just the main one and a few others). Is there a way to get these to excute? They are basically command line utility functions to process some text files but use large files in the distribution and are also used by the main application. Thanks

• Enforcing a query in MySql to use a specific index

  Hi, I have large table. consisting of only 3 columns (id(INT),bookmarkID(INT),tagID(INT)).I have two BTREE indexes one for each bookmarkID and tagID columns.This table has about 21 Million records. I am trying to run this query: SELECT bookmarkID,COUNT(bookmarkID) AS count FROM bookmark_tag_map GROUP BY tagID,bookmarkID HAVING tagID IN (-----"tagIDList"-----) AND count >= N which takes ages to return the results.I read somewhere that if make an index in which it has tagID,bookmarkID together, i will get a much faster result. I created the index after some time. Tried the query again, but it seems that this query is not using the new index that I have made.I ran EXPLAIN and saw that it is actually true. My question now is that how I can enforce a query to use a specific index? also comments on other ways to make the query faster are welcome. Thanks

  Hello all, I'm using C#/.NET with the C# wrapper for SQLite. I'm attempting to merge two SQLite databases together while excluding duplicates. I found this, which is referenced from a few different forum questions. http://old.nabble.com/Attempting-to-merge-large-databases-td18131366.html Would I run the following queries in my SQLite configuration as listed below? attach 'c:\test\b.db3' as toMerge; insert into AuditRecords select * from toMerge.AuditRecords; My main question is whether the above will remove duplicates, and if it doesn't, is there a merge or some other command I can use? • Best way to get the iframe object.

  Hi, We are using too many iframes in out web application. In these iframes we load the pages which may also contains iframes and so on up to N level. Right now i'm using recursive function to find out the required iframe object in JavaScript. It works fine, The issue is when we create large dynamic pages which may contains up to 1000 iframes in it. In this case my recursive function takes too much time to find the required iframe object. How i can overcome this issue or these is any alternative of recursion in JavaScript. Thanks

  Right now I am using this code to download files (with a Range header). Most of the files are large, and it is running 99% of CPU currently as the file downloads.   I have some bulk data in a text file that I need to import into a MySQL table. The table consists of two fields .. ID (integer with auto-increment) Name (varchar) The text file is a large collection of names with one name per line ... (example) John Doe Alex Smith Bob Denver I know how to import a text file via phpMyAdmin however, as far as I understand, I need to import data that has the same number of fields as the target table. Is there a way to import the data from my text file into one field and have the ID field auto-increment automatically? Thank you in advance for any help.

Some of the properties I wish to set do expose a programmatic interface to 'default', but many others do not. Is there a generic way to set such properties to their default? • 2D World design question

  I'm facing a problem which is probably extremely common in game-design. Let's assume that we've got a 2D world The world's size is M x N rect The world may contain some items in it The items have (x,y) coords The world can be browsed via a window that is physically (m x n) large. The browser window can be zoomed in / out The browser window can be panned up/down + left right, while in the extents of the world's rect. How should I go about implementing this? I'm especially concerned about the browser window. Can anyone recommend any good reads ? This is not a homework - it's more of a task which I've set myself to complete.

• Is there a way to disable calls to Runtime.checkRestricted on the GAE Java development server under Eclipse?

  I'm one of those guys who step through their code a lot during development. Beginning with version 1.6.4 of the GAE Java development server, the server has been instrumented with calls to a function named Runtime.checkRestricted. This causes two inconveniences when I step through my code: 1) Whenever I step into a function, the debugger goes into the function Runtime.checkRestricted (for which there is no source code) at least once, often multiple times. 2) Whenever I step over a function call which has a large call tree underneath it, then it takes a very long time for the debugger to come back. (That's always a problem in the Eclipse Java debugger, but now it's really bad.) For me, all this causes a serious drain on productivity. Is there any way to disable this instrumentation, or to prevent the debugger from stepping into it? I am using Eclipse with the GAE plugin.

• What open source database platform is most easily transferred from my personal machine into a window

  I would like eventual interaction with MS Dynamics SL and/or MindTouch Core (running on WMware) for eventual intranet and/or internet display. I guess I am asking for front and back end recommendations for a database I am constructing, but since this is my first major project I would greatly appreciate any help and advice. I would also love an opportunity to learn a new language so the code base could be in any language. I do have a few more related questions for discussion; What is the viability of using Google hosting to provide the service to the public for free? Should I implement plone or another CMS if I have a large amount of output? Is there a structuring questionnaire or standards publication I could reference? Does UML diagramming provide additional options for portability? Thank you.

  array( [0] name => 'joe' size => 'large' [1] name => 'bill' size => 'small' ) I think i'm being thick, but to get the attributes of an array element if I know the value of one of the keys, I'm first looping through the elements to find the right one. foreach($array as $item){ if ($item['name'] == 'joe'){ #operations on $item } } I'm aware that this is probably very poor, but I am fairly new and am looking for a way to access this element directly by value.   Hello. I have a CFC as singletone object in Application scope. One of the methods is used for massive data processing and periodically causes the "Java heap space" errors. EDIT All variables inside the method are VAR-scoped, so they should not be kept in the object scope when invokation ended. It can be a bit dumb question for Java people, but I'd like to know how Java garbage collector cleans up the CFC methods memory: only when whole request ends, or maybe right after each method/function invokation? Second option is interesting because it can allow me to split my large method into the few, as one of the possible optimizations.

• GDB hardware watchpoint very slow - why?

  On a large C application, I have set a hardware watchpoint on a memory address as follows: (gdb) watch *((int*)0x12F5D58) Hardware watchpoint 3: *((int*)0x12F5D58) As you can see, it's a hardware watchpoint, not software, which would explain the slowness. Now the application running time under debugger has changed from less than ten seconds to one hour and counting. The watchpoint has triggered three times so far, the first time after 15 minutes when the memory page containing the address was made readable by sbrk. Surely during those 15 minutes the watchpoint should have been efficient since the memory page was inaccessible? And that still does not explain, why it's so slow afterwards. The GDB is $ gdb --version GNU gdb (GDB) 7.0-ubuntu [...] Thanks in advance for any ideas as what might be the cause or how to fix/work around it.

• What considerations need to be made when transitioning an application to support?

  I will be taking on the role of support for a complex application that is transitioning from the development team. This application is a sharepoint solution that connects to several (7) web services. The development team is rolling off almost immediately and will be available only for small questions. I'm new to this role so I'm wondering what suggestions you have for me as I take on this large project. What are some considerations that should be made so that the transition to support is smooth and uninterupted? I've been reading the documentation but I can already see some gaps that need to be filled. The applicaiton is very (perhaps overly) configurable and there is lots of injected code. Stepping through the code is about the only way I can gain an understanding of what is actually happening. At this point I'm a little over whelmed and appreciate any suggestions or advice. Thanks!

• Noob Rails ? about learning Rails

  Hi All I have been programming for a while and for the past 3 or 4 months have been learning ruby. I am not an expert by any means but I believe I have the basics down. I decided to start learning RoR and bought the "Agile Web Development with Rails 3rd Edition" and have been dutifully going through the chapters one by one. Currently I am in chapter 8 and have had no problems so far. My question is I know I have learned several things so far and I know that I am starting to get a sense of the Rails framework I have this fear that I am just not learning as much as I should. Some things I get and understand the interconnections while I feel on other things I am just going through the motions and don't fully comprehend the total interconnectivity. Now, there is still a large amount of the book for me to complete. I guess I am just wondering if I complete this book what should I expect to be able to accomplish on my own and what should be my next steps. Thanks

• Assert parameters in a table-valued UDF

  Is there a way to create "asserts" on the parameters of a table-valued UDF. I'd like to use a table-valued UDF for performance reasons, however I know that certain parameter combinations (like start and end dates that are more than a month apart) will cause performance issues on the server for all users. End users query the database via Excel using UDFs. UDFs (and table-valued UDFs in particular) are useful when the data is too large for Excel. Users write simple SQL queries that categorizes the data into groups to reduce the number of rows. For example, the user may be interested in weekly aggregates rather than hourly ones. Users write a group by SELECT statement to reduce the rows by 24x7=168 times. I know I can write RAISERROR statements in multistatement UDFs, but table-valued UDFs are integrated in the query optimizer so these queries are more efficient with table-valued UDFs. So, can I define assertions on the parameters passed to a table-valued UDF?

• Program contains 2 nested loops which contain 4 if conditionals. How many paths?

  In Roger Pressman's book, there is an example described of a program with 2 nested loops, the inner loop enclosing four if statements. The two loops can execute up to 20 times. He states that this makes about 10^14 paths. To get a number this large, it seems the paths inside the loops are multipllied by 2^40, i.e. 2^20 times 2^20 to account for all the possibilities of going through the two loops. I can't see why this factor is not just 400, i.e. 20 times 20. Can someone shed some light? It will help if you have the ppt slides and can see the program graph. Thanks.

  I've been looking into creating a gallery mode in my application. The functionality will be identical to the built in Photos App. Here's the flow: 1. You touch on a thumbnail and ... 2. a modal view displays a large detail version of the image 3. You have the ability to scroll horizontally through all the images in the gallery while in this modal view I'm stuck on step 3. How do I dynamically load hi res images into a scroll view? I understand I need to set the contentSize for the the scrollView but how do I do that when I've only selected and loaded one image? What delegate methods do I need to implement and what does the heavy lifting look like? Thanks in advance!

  Hello all, Is there a way to have the jquery treeview plugin automatically collapse when a user focuses on another element. More detail about what I am trying to do: I have a form where a user has to select an item from a large selection. To make this easier I have set up a small list of 5 commonly selected items each with associated radio select buttons. However if the item wanted is not in this common list the user has to use the treeview to search through different categories to find the item. • How to figure out optimal C / Gamma parameters in libsvm?

  I'm using libsvm for multi-class classification of datasets with a large number of features/attributes (around 5,800 per each item). I'd like to choose better parameters for C and Gamma than the defaults I am currently using. I've already tried running easy.py, but for the datasets I'm using, the estimated time is near forever (ran easy.py at 20, 50, 100, and 200 data samples and got a super-linear regression which projected my necessary runtime to take years). Is there a way to more quickly arrive at better C and Gamma values than the defaults? I'm using the Java libraries, if that makes any difference.

• Django: many-to-one fields and data integrity

  Let's say that I have a Person who runs an inventory system. Each Person has some Cars, and each Car has a very large number of Parts (thousands, let's say). A Person, Bob, uses a Django form to create a Car. Now, Bob goes to create some Parts. It is only at the form level that Django knows that the Parts belong to some specific Car, and that the Parts.ForeignKey(Car) field should only have a specific Car as a choice. When creating a Part, you have to mess with the form's constructor or similar in order to limit the choice of Cars to only the cars owned by Bob. It does not seem proper that to enforce this ownership at the form level. It seems that other users' Cars must be inaccessible to anyone but the owner of the Car. What do you all think about this, and is there any way to enforce this?
