• Misc. Naming: Can I place underscores instead of camel casing in modern languages?

  Hi! I would like to ask some kind of permission (I hope that doesn't sound strange) from the people who have influence on the naming conventions in modern languages like F#, Scala, etc. My problem is - I just can't read camelCased code and wish I could write underscored_names at least in my internal implementations (not in API interface). This applies to just everything - local var names, method names, params.. (Not class names I think) It seems that now the camel-casing is preferred for example for the names of object methods, but could that be not the only way? What would you say; Can I go with underscored names in languages like I mentioned (F#, Scala)?

• Android equivalent work-around for View.getX() before API 11?

  I'm using the getX() and getY() method on a view for some special dragging logic (not animation, i.e. I never use setX/Y methods, I just need the getters to check). However, I've come to realize that these are only available post-API 11. The docs for getX() say that is it the addition of the 'left' property and the 'translationX' property. All well and good, except get/setTranslationX() is only around since API 11 as well. I was wondering if there was any knowledge on what this method returns behind the scenes, so I could maybe put in a workaround. Thanks for any help - Chase

• What are the pro and cons of having localization files vs hard coded variables in source code?

  Definitions: Files: Having the localization phrases stored in a physical file that gets read at application start-up and the phrases are stored in the memory to be accessed via util-methods. The phrases are stored in key-value format. One file per language. Variables: The localization texts are stored as hard code variables in the application's source code. The variables are complex data types and depending on the current language, the appropriate phrase is returned. Background: The application is a Java Servlet and the developers use Eclipse as their primary IDE. Some brief pro and cons: Since Eclipse is use, tracking and finding unused localizations are easier when they are saved as variables, compared to having them in a file. However the application's source code becomes bigger and bloated. What are the pro and cons of having localization text in files versus hard coded varibles in source code? What do you do and why?

• Starting new transaction in Spring bean

  We have: @Transactional(propagation = Propagation.REQUIRED) public class MyClass implementes MyInterface { ... MyInterface has a single method: go(). When go() executes we start a new transaction which commits/rollbacks when the method is complete - this is fine. Now let's say in go() we call a private method in MyClass that has @Transactional(propagation = Propagation.REQUIRES_NEW. It seems that Spring "ignores" the REQUIRES_NEW annotation and does not start a new transaction. I believe this is because Spring AOP operates on the interface level (MyInterface) and does not intercept any calls to MyClass methods. Is this correct? Is there any way to start a new transaction within the go() transaction? Is the only way to call another Spring managed bean that has transactions configured as REQUIRES_NEW? Update: Adding that when clients execute go() they do so via a reference to the interface, not the class: @Autowired MyInterface impl; impl.go();

• How to use a servlet to repsond to a request for an object

  I'm sure this is easy, but I don't work with website development very often and I'm lost on this one. I have a web application that needs to support multiple clients with different settings, icons and other content. The contents of these files are in separate directories for each client. What I would like to do is respond to a request sent to a jsp/java servlet. The servlet will look up the proper folder location in a database (I have the database stuff working) and send the actual object to the requesting page whether it is xml, graphic or video. How do I do that? What methods should I be using. Help I'm lost! :(

• Best way to identify and dispose locked thread in java.

  I have to call a function 3rd party module on a new thread. From what I've seen, the call either completes quickly if everything went well or it just hangs for ever locking up the thread. What's a good way to start the thread and make the call and wait for a few secs and if the thread is still alive, then assuming it's locked up, kill (or stop or abandon) the thread without using any deprecated methods. I have something like this for now, but I'm not sure if this is the best way to do it and I want to avoid calling Thread.stop() as it's deprecated. • Convert VB6 Randomize to C#

  I'm writing a C# frontend to a legacy database that uses VB6 Rnd() and Randomize() methods for user password encryption. The encryption function is very simplistic and really not all that secure, but it's what all current passwords are stored with. What I'd like to be able to do is authenticate legacy users from a C# application. I can write new encryption (or preferably hashing) code for VB6 so that all future users have a more secure password, and that can be duplicated in C#. But I don't want to require current users to have had their password reset before they can use the new frontend. Is there any way I can reimplement that algorithm in C# so that it produces identical results to the legacy VB6 code?

  hello, i run a social networking site written in asp.net and would like to open it to developers using the OpenSocial APIs. I have read information on opensocial.org as well as google's opensocial page and have a basic idea what it takes but still there is a lot of info missing to even get started. I know i gotta provide RESTful API as well as JavaScript API, authenticating using OAuth methods. Does my container has to provide all 3: JSON, XML, and AtomPub representations of data? I found Shindig but it runs under Apache, i need something for IIS. Are there any libraries that i could use as a base for my APIs to save time? Is it even recommended to write the entire container from scratch? thanks

However the naming convention on the document says, The Core Foundation naming conventions, in particular use of the word “create”, only apply to C functions that return Core Foundation objects. Naming conventions for Objective-C methods are governed by the Cocoa conventions, irrespective of whether the method returns a Core Foundation or Cocoa object. By this account since my function is a message in an objective C object it doesn't seem proper to name it createSomething. I still want to return this object. What's the best way to approach this? Should I use the Get Rule and then have the caller explicitly retain it? But this is not within Cocoa convention. What's the proper way to handle this?

• Why Aren't Programs Written In Assembly More Often?

  It seems to be a mainstream opinion that assembly programming takes longer and is more difficult to program in than a higher level language such as C. Therefore it seems to be recommend or assumed that it is better to write in a higher level language for these reasons and for the reason of better portability. Recently I've been writing in x86 assembly and it has dawned on me that perhaps these reasons are not really true, except perhaps portability. Perhaps it is more of a matter of familiarity and knowing how to write assembly well. I also noticed that programming in assembly is quite different than programming in an HLL. Perhaps a good and experienced assembly programmer could write programs just as easily and as quickly as an experienced C programmer writing in C. Perhaps it is because assembly programming is quite different than HLLs, and so requires different thinking, methods and ways, which makes it seem very awkward to program in for the unfamiliar, and so gives it its bad name for writing programs in. If portability isn't an issue, then really, what would C have over a good assembler such as NASM?

• What's the best way to cancel an asynchronous WCF request?

  (Assuming a WCF method called "MyFunction") Currently, to support canceling a WCF request, I'm using the BeginMyFunction/EndMyFunction methods generated by svcutil (and handling an isCanceled flag when dispatching the results to the main thread). I'd like to use the MyFunctionAsync method (and hooking into MyFunctionAsyncCompleted event instead) for async calls instead of Begin/End. What is the best/supported way to handle canceling WCF requests if using MyFunctionAsyncCompleted, and still ensuring that the event doesn't get fired on a page that's no longer loaded (i.e. page navigation within a frame). • Objective-c class initializer executes multiple times

  Unless I misunderstood it, this LINK from Apple's documentation clearly states that the class initializer, "+ (void)initialize)", only executes once per class. Here is the excerpt: Special Considerations initialize it is invoked only once per class. If you want to perform independent initialization for the class and for categories of the class, you should implement load methods. However, I'm getting a weird behavior on my project and the initializer is being executed twice. So I have to check if _classContext is null. I only got one class that has this method. What are the possible reasons why this is happening? I'm using XCode 4.5.2 and OS X 10.8.2. • Embed Icons into WPF Application as Resource

  I am trying to embed an icon into my my WPF application so that I can pull it out for use as an icon in the Window 7 JumpList using the following code: newScene.IconResourcePath = System.Reflection.Assembly.GetEntryAssembly().Location; newScene.IconResourceIndex = 0; I've gotten it to work using the following method: http://dennisdel.com/?p=38 However, it doesn't seem like the best approach and it seems like there should be an easier way to embed an icon resource into my application while still leaving the "Icon and Manifest" option checked in the Application properties for my program. I've tried numerous methods including setting the icon build action as a resource and an embedded resource, but every time I open my .exe in a resource editor, the icon does not appear. Any suggestions?

• Question About Abstract Classes?

  URL: Link (1) According to this wesbite .. you cannot implement Abstract classes but derive from them. This makes sense and I have read this many times. Like an interface, you cannot implement an instance of an abstract class, however you can implement methods, fields, and properties in the abstract class that can be used by the child class. But on MSDN URL: TextWriter CLass on MSDN TextWriter is an abstract class but it has two constructors defined ... and according to the MS 70-536 book, the following statement is valid: TextWriter tw = new File.CreateText("myFile.Txt") The static file class and it's CreateText method is fine by me as I have studied it on MSDN but can somebody explain this little contradiction I have found? Surely I am not the first? Why is instantaion of base abstract classes possible????

• PL DOC source forge - 2 issues

  I'm attempting to use PLDOC source forge (http://pldoc.sourceforge.net/maven-site/) with my code to generate a neat page with comments of my liking. I'm coming across 2 issues, any help would be appreciated. 1 I've been using tags (/**, */) to make comments and this works perfectly for functions, but does not appear in procedures. My Functions and procedures are independent and not in packages, and trying to add comments before the PROCEDURE declaration just gets deleted when saved. 2 if i try to use the recommended method of getting the data directly from teh database (call pldoc.bat -url jdbc:oracle:thin:@localhost:1521:ORCL -user SCOTT -password TIGER -sql SYS_OWNER.DBMS_PIPE,SYS_OWNER.DBMS_OUTPUT), it puts all the available functions and procedures under the user SIS_OWNER (SIS_owner is the only link available on the left hand side). I want to change this so that I can view all the methods in the list instead. Problem with procedures stated in 1 still exists with this method. Please let me know if you have overcome this and any pointers would be great. Thanks

• How to set background image in Java?

  I am developing a simple platform game using Java using BlueJ as the IDE. Right now I have player/enemy sprites, platforms and other items in the game drawn using polygons and simple shapes. Eventually I hope to replace them with actual images. For now I would like to know what is the simplest solution to setting an image (either URL or from local source) as the 'background' of my game window/canvas? I would appreciate it if it isn't something long or complex as my programming skills aren't very good and I want to keep my program as simple as possible. Kindly provide example codes with comments to elaborate on their function, and also if it's in its own class, how to call on relevant methods used by it on other classes. Thank you very much.

  I am using Java Reflection to expose methods in custom eclipse tool. I am writing method getReturnType which accepts java.lang.reflect.Method as input and returns object of Class private static Class<?> getReturnType(Method method) { Type type = ((ParameterizedType)method.getGenericReturnType()).getRawType(); return getClass(type); } This code compiles well but at runtime i get the below exception while casting Type to ParameterizedType. java.lang.ClassCastException: java.lang.Class cannot be cast to java.lang.reflect.ParameterizedType Please suggest. • Reverting back to previous ADT plugin

  Now I was wondering if anyone has been able to accomplish reverting to a previous ADT plugin. The reason for this is because I am using an open source jar and I am getting the following errors on my LogCat such as: unable to resolve virtual method unable to find class referenced in signature unable to resolve new-instance The effect of this causes an error on running my android application on the debugger. I was using android ADT 15 before now I am updated to 17. Please help on finding a solution to resolve the issue. Edit* Forgot to add in The error "java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError". In simple terms it can't find classes or methods the attached jar even though it allows it.

• Move Global.asax to iHttpModule when using ASP.NET MVC

  I have successfully created an iHttpModule to replace my Global.asax file in many Web Forms applications. But in looking at the Global.asax file in my MVC application, the methods are totally different. I'm wondering if it is still possible to create this same thing in an MVC app. I know it's not necessary and the Global.asax works just fine. I suppose I just want to have nothing but the web.config in the root directory of my application. Also, I am putting all of my classes in a separate class library project instead of a folder in my MVC application. Not sure if this makes a difference or not.

• C++ library for Coordinate Transformation Matrices (CTM)?

  I'm looking for a C++ library which allows for easy integration of Coordinate Transformation Matrices (CTM) in my application. You might know CTMs from PDF or PostScript. For one project we are using C++/Qt4 as a framework, which offers a QTransform class, which provides methods like .translate(double x, double y) or .rotate(double degrees). After doing some transformations, it would allow me to get all 6 CTM values, which I could feed into a PDF library or use a transformation matrix in export files. Qt's API also allows for arbitrary mapping of polygons (QPolygon), rectangles (QRect) and other primitive data structures into transformed coordinate systems. So basically I'm looking for something similar to what Qt provides, but without the need of using Qt. I know I could do the matrix multiplications myself, but I'm not really interested in doing so, as I'm very sure that someone already solved this problem, so please no links to books or other guides on how to multiply matrices. • Log with timestamps that have millisecond accuracy & resolution in Windows C++

  I'm aware that for timing accuracy, functions like timeGetTime, timeBeginPeriod, QueryPerformanceCounter etc are great, giving both good resolution & accuracy, but only based on time-since-boot, with no direct link to clock time. However, I don't want to time events as such. I want to be able to produce an exact timestamp (local time) so that I can display it in a log file, eg 31-12-2010 12:38:35.345, for each entry made. (I need the millisecond accuracy) The standard Windows time functions, like GetLocalTime, whilst they give millisecond values, don't have millisecond resolution, depending on the OS running. I'm using XP, so I can't expect much better than about a 15ms resolution. What I need is a way to get the best of both worlds, without creating a large overhead to get the required output. Overly large methods/calculations would mean that the logger would start to eat up too much time during its operation. What would be the best/simplest way to do this?

But I still don't understand why we need to utilize different HTTP requests: DELETE/PUT/POST/GET in order to build nice API Wouldn't it be a lot simpler to pass all information in request parameters and have a SINGLE ENTRY-POINT for your api?: GET www.example.com/api?id=1&method=delete&returnformat=JSON GET www.example.com/api?id=1&method=delete&returnformat=XML or POST www.example.com/api {post data: id=1&method=delete&returnformat=JSON} POST www.example.com/api {post data: id=1&method=delete&returnformat=XML} and then - we can handle all methods and data internally without the need for hundreds of urls... how would you call this type of API - It's not REST apparently, it's not SOAP. then - what is it? UPDATE I'm not proposing any new standards here. I merely asking a question in order to better understand why web services work the way they work.

• Is MVC now the only way to write PHP?

  Hey... its XMAS Eve and something is bugging me... yes, I have work on my mind even when I am on holiday. The vast amount of frameworks available for PHP now use MVC. Even ASP.net has its own MVC module. I can see the attraction of MVC, I really can and I use it frequently. The only downside that I can see is that you have to fire up the whole system to execute a page request. Depending on your task this can be a little wasteful. So the question. In a professional environment is this the only way to use PHP nowadays or are their other design methods which have alternative benefits?

• Why don't I have access to setReadDataOnly() or enableMemoryOptimization() in PHPExcel?

  I've downloaded PHPExcel 1.7.5 Production. I would like to use setReadDataOnly() and enableMemoryOptimization() as discussed in their forum here and in stackoverflow questions. However when I use them, I get a Call to undefined method error. Is there another version or some plugin or library that I have not installed? • Tool for checking source for dependencies on specific Java versions

  Is there a quick way (e.g. tool) to detect, from the source (or maybe even from compiled classes), which parts of an application call Java API methods that are only implemented in a specific Java version? (e.g. which parts of my app are Java6-specific) I don't necessarily want to hop through all ClassMismatchErrors and avoid the trial-and-error-method. Let's say I only want to document which parts of an application won't work if they were writte for, e.g., Java6 and I want to run it in a version 5 JDK. Is there something like this? Google did not help this time, nor did I find any solution here (a rare case indeed:)
