• How can a wix custom action dll call be made to use the debug runtime via a merge module?

  I'm trying to create a debug build with a corresponding debug installer for our product. I'm new to Wix so please forgive any naivety contained herein. The debug Dlls in my project are dependent on both the VS2008 and the VS2008SP1 debug runtimes. • WCF Service error received when using TCP: "The message could not be dispatched..."

  I am new to creating WCF services. I have created a WCF web service in VS2008 that is running on IIS 7. When I use http the service works perfectly. When I configure the service for TCP and run I get the following error message. There was a communication problem. The message could not be dispatched because the service at the endpoint address 'net:tcp://elec:9090/CoordinateIdTool_Tcp/IdToolService.svc is unavailable for the protocol of the address. I have searched a lot of forums, including this one, for a resolution but nothing has worked. Everything appears to be set up correctly on IIS 7. WAS has been set up to run. The default web site has a net.tcp binding and the application has net.tcp under the enabled protocols. I am including what I think is the important part of the web.config from the host project and also the app.config from the client project I am using to test the service. • SQL Server adding a record record manually to a view

  I have a view which contains the data seen in the image below. The view is showing me how many working days are available in each month for the current financial year taking away any school/bank holidays. As the month of August has zero days available it has excluded this month from the view. As the total number of days available will always be zero for the month of August, then it seems acceptable to hardcode the SQL to always have 0 for August, and also an April-August record which will be the same as April-July. • Is it possible for two VS2008 C# class library projects to share a single namespace?

  I am trying to share a common namespace between two projects in a single solution. The projects are "Blueprint" and "Repositories". Blueprint contains Interfaces for the entire application and serves as a reference for the application structure. In the Blueprint project, I have an interface with the following declaration: namespace Application.Repositories{ public interface IRepository{ IEntity Get(Guid id); } } In the Repositories project I have a class the following class: namespace Application.Repositories{ public class STDRepository: IRepository { STD Get(Guid id){ return new SkankyExGirlfriendDataContext() .FirstOrDefault<STD>(x=>x.DiseaseId == id); } } } However, this does not work. The Repositories project has a reference to the Blueprint project. I receive a VS error: "The type or namespace name 'IRepository' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) - Normally, this is easy to fix but adding a using statement doesn't make sense since they have the same namespace. I tried it anyway and it didn't work. The reference has been added, and without the line of code referencing that interface, both projects compile successfully. I am lost here. I have searched all over and have found nothing, so I am assuming that there is something fundamentally wrong with what I'm doing ... but I don't know what it is. So, I would appreciate some explanation or guidance as to how to fix this problem. I hope you guys can help. Note: The reason I want to do it this way and keep the interfaces under the same namespace is because I want a solid project to keep all the interfaces in, in order to have a reference for the full architecture of the application. I have considered work arounds, such as putting all of the interfaces in the Blueprint.Application namespace instead of the application namespace. However, that would require me to write the using statement on virtually every page in the application...and my fingers get tired. Thanks again guys...

We're actively developing a new product and as such we often have additions or changes to our DB schema. We also have many copies of the DB -- one for the test environment, one for the prod environment, dev environments, you name it. We don't really want to have to blow away test data every time we want to make a change to the DB. Are there good ways of automating this or handling this? None of us have really ever had to deal with this so...

• "Error opening associated documents" message when loading VS

  When loading up a solution in VS2008 I get this message: An error was encountered while opening associated documents the last time this solution was loaded. Document load is being skipped during this solution load in order to avoid that error. It shut down immediately the first time I opened it. The next time I opened it, VS popped up a message box but did not shut down at first; however, it did shut down when I clicked a usercontrol or ASPX page. How can I find which document is causing the problem? Thanks...

• Is my TFS2010 backup/restore hosed?

  Hi all, I recently set up a sandbox TFS to test TFS-specific features without interfering with the production TFS. I was happy I did this sooner than I thought--I hadn't been backing up the encryption key from SSRS and upon restoring the reporting databases, they remained inactive, requiring initialization that could only come from applying the encryption key. Said encryption key was lost when I nuked the partition after backing up the TFS databases. The only option I seemed to have is to delete the encrypted data. I'm fine with this, since there wasn't much in there to begin with, however once they're deleted I'm not quite sure how to configure TFS to recognize a new installation of these services while using the restored versions of everything else. Unfortunately, the TFS help file doesn't seem to account for this state though. Is there a way to essentially rebuild the reporting and analysis databases? Or are they gone forever?

• Adding a new column to Table which contains live data

  I have a large table consisting of over 60 millions records and I would like to add 2 new columns for data migration purposes. There are indexes on the table and some of them are large. So, by me adding the 2 new columns to the table, will I run the risk of slowing down the database whilst it attempts to add them and maybe time-out? Or will it just work? I know that if I try and rearrange the columns SQL Server will ask me to drop and re-create the table, so I definately don't want this. Is this something everyone is challenged with?

• Configuring TeamCity + NUnit unit tests so files can be loaded properly

  In a nutshell, I have a solution that builds fine in the IDE, and the unit tests all run fine with the NUnit GUI (via the NUnitit VS2008 plugin). However, when I execute my TeamCity build runner, all unit tests that require file access (e.g. for running tests against specific XML files), I just get System.IO.DirectoryNotFoundExceptions. The reason for this is clear: it's looking for those supporting XML files loaded by various unit tests in the wrong folder. The way my unit tests are structured looks like this: +-- project folder +-- unit tests folder +-- test.xml +-- test.cs +-- project file.xaml +-- project file.xaml.cs All of my projects own their own UnitTests folder, which contains the .cs file and any XML files, XML Schemas, etc that are necessary to run the tests. So when I write my test.cs, I have it look for "test.xml" in the code because they are in the same folder (actually, I do something like ....\unit tests\test.xml, but that's kind of silly). As I said before, the tests run great in NUnit. But that's because the unit tests are part of the project. When running the unit tests from TeamCity, I am executing them against the assemblies that get copied to the main app's output folder. These unit test XML files should not be copied willy-nilly to the output folder just to make the tests pass. Can anyone suggest a better method of organizing my unit tests in each project (which are dependencies for the main app), such that I can execute the unit tests from NUnit and from the TeamCity build runner? The only other option I can come up with is to just put the testing XML data in code, rather than loading it from a file. I would rather not do this.

Everything works fine for the first few but then I get this unexplained nullexception error " (Object reference not set to an instance of an object) Now I took a look at the declaration but cannot see how to change it. • vs2008 attach to process, can't see which process

  Hi, In vs2003 (and vs2005(not sure about that)) when I attached to a process, before actually attaching I could see which process were running under w3wp (I have a couple of websites running locally) so I knew which exact .net application I was about to debug. however in vs2008 the window doesn't show up anymore.. now I have to attach it, come to the conclusion it was the wrong process, stop debugging and attach it to the other process (if I haven't forgot teh processid :P ) Is there a way to "enable" that interesting window to see with .net apps are runnig in that specific w3wp process? or am i missing something obvious?

  In my C# application i need to trigger some events when a VLC player (preferably) starts playback (a play button is pressed in VLC for example).Tried Windows Media Player classic with Microsoft Spy++ and observed messages that are sent when playback starts\repeats but i don't know how i could "catch" those messages in my C# code.So my question: is there any way to hook up to event in VLC (or WMP) and get notified about playback status (play, stop, start of repeat). My goal is to create a C# function that waits for start of playback event in player and then triggers some actions in my application (this should also happen when playback ends and starts repeating). What approach should i take here? Just to clearify: I don't want to embedded a new instance of VLC in my app, but instead control/read the "real" full version of VLC, started seperatly by the user

• Is it a good idea to use a computed column as part of a primary key ?

  I've got a table defined as : OrderID bigint NOT NULL, IDA varchar(50) NULL, IDB bigint NULL, [ ... 50 other non relevant columns ...] The natural primary key for this table would be (OrderID,IDA,IDB), but this it not possible because IDA and IDB can be null (they can both be null, but they are never both defined at the same time). Right now I've got a unique constraint on those 3 columns. Now, the thing is I need a primary key to enable transactional replication, and I'm faced with two choices : Create an identity column and use it as a primary key Create a non-null computed column C containing either IDA or IDB or '' if both columns were null, and use (OrderID,C) as my primary key. The second alternative seams cleaner as my PK would be meaningful, and is feasible (see msdn link), but since I've never seen this done anywhere, I was wondering if they were some cons to this approach.

Is there a way that I can suppress this output? Some day, I might want to know when 'C:\Windows\SysWOW64\ntdll.dll' was loaded, but normally I don't care. This is especially true when I'm running unit tests, and just want to be told whether any of the tests failed. This stuff isn't output with console applications, but it is with windows applications. To give an example of what I mean, here are the first lines from the output of a recent unit-test run. 'MyProject.exe': Loaded 'C:\dev\MyProject\Testing\MyProject.exe', Symbols loaded. 'MyProject.exe': Loaded 'C:\Windows\SysWOW64\ntdll.dll' 'MyProject.exe': Loaded 'C:\Windows\SysWOW64\kernel32.dll' 'MyProject.exe': Loaded 'C:\Windows\SysWOW64\KernelBase.dll' 'MyProject.exe': Loaded 'C:\Windows\SysWOW64\dbghelp.dll' 'MyProject.exe': Loaded 'C:\Windows\SysWOW64\msvcrt.dll' 'MyProject.exe': Loaded 'C:\Windows\SysWOW64\user32.dll' 'MyProject.exe': Loaded 'C:\Windows\SysWOW64\gdi32.dll' 'MyProject.exe': Loaded 'C:\Windows\SysWOW64\lpk.dll' 'MyProject.exe': Loaded 'C:\Windows\SysWOW64\usp10.dll' 'MyProject.exe': Loaded 'C:\Windows\SysWOW64\advapi32.dll' ... and on and on ...
