• basic help for Nat configuration needed

  I have a server with a IP 1.0.0.5/24. This is the main IP address of the server, and now I have two other IP addresses for the server, they are 1.0.2.30/24 and 1.0.2.31/24. I want to make a VirtualBox running another OS accessible through the Internet, and only allow the specified IP to reach the virtual box. I'm new to iptables and therefore I need some basic help and getting started information about this. The hosting provider does not allow more than on MAC address per switch port, which means that I'm not able to make bridge as far as I know. Futhermore I want the host, to reject the extra IPs so its only the VirtualBox / virtual machine that accepts the request's on the extra IPS.

  Kernel 3.5 introduces: This release includes a driver for using an IEEE-1394 connection as a SCSI transport. This enables to expose SCSI devices to other nodes on the Firewire bus, for example hard disk drives. It's a similar functionality to Firewire Target Disk Mode on many Apple computers. This release also adds a usb-gadget driver that does the same with USB. The driver supports two USB protocols are supported that is BBB or BOT (Bulk Only Transport) and UAS (USB Attached SCSI). BOT is advertised on alternative interface 0 (primary) and UAS is on alternative interface 1. Both protocols can work on USB 2.0 and USB 3.0.   I have a site that must stay alive due to a service that runs and check a directory for changes. The site is running in IIS at a Windows Server 2003 and the solution I came up it that I will Schedule a task that requests the home page every 5 minutes. I am sure that this way the site will stay alive almost all the time. I have downloaded Wget from Wget from Windows and I have installed it at my windows server 2003 but I don't know how to use it in order to ping the server but not download anything. Since I want to use this forever I don't want to save anything on the disk, can you provide me with the command that pings a web page but don't save anything on the disk?

• IIS 7 Application Pools using a different amount of memory on multiple servers behind a load balancer

  We have 6 servers in a web farm behind an F5. There are approximately 25 AppPools on each of these servers. On servers 1 - 5 the apppools are consuming approx 500MB Private Bytes, and 5GB Virtual Bytes. On server 6 the apppools are consuming approx 800MB Private Bytes, and 8GB Virtual Bytes. I can not seem to figure out why we have this difference. The code is the exact same on each box. We replicate the apphost.config between the boxes, so the Appplication Configs are identical. The only difference seems to be that this box consumes more RAM, and in turn ends up using a lot more CPU. During Black Friday we observed the CPU on server 6 spiking to 100% and noticed that the % Memory Commit was also near 100%, while the rest of the farm was at closer to 50% utilization. Pulling the 6th server from the load balancer dropped CPU/Memory on the 6th server back to normal, and did not cause a noticeable strain on the other servers.

• Fully Qualified Domain name on Ubuntu Server

  I've setup a LAMP server on Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid) and have also installed Virtualmin. This is my first attempt at setting up a server of any sort. I set up one virtual host using Virtualmin and so far so good. Some odd things are happening though, such as when I type in my primary domain into a browser, I see the contents of the virtual server instead of what should be in the default directory. I'm going to use 123.345.789 and example.co.uk instead of my actual ip and domain name's if thats ok. I checked my hostname by using hostname -f and got production1 as my response The contents of my /etc/hosts file is (ip's and domain changed to something generic for this post): 127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain 123.456.789 production1.example.co.uk 123.456.789 production1 shouldn't my FQD be production1.example.co.uk? How can I go about changing this?, a simple step by step instruction would be great! thanks in advance.

• Remote Desktop closes with Fatal Error (Error Code: 5)

  We have one PC (Windows XP SP3) that we can not log onto using a Remote Desktop session. Logging on to the PC directly (sitting in front of it using the connected keyboard and monitor) work fine. From a second PC (tried a number of different ones but all Windows XP SP3) I run 'mstsc' and type in PC name to connect to. This shows the login box which we can enter the correct login details and click OK. Within a few second we get an error: Title: Fatal Error (Error Code:5) Error: Your Remote Desktop session is about to end. This computer might be low on virtual memory. Close your other programs, and then try connecting to the remote computer again. If the problem continues, contact your network administrator or technical support. None of the computers we are using are low on memory (2Gb+) and we let windows manage the virtual memory side of things. We do not see this with any other PC and do use Remote Desktop in meeting rooms to connect to user PCs with no problems.

• Corrupted files, hard drive test?

  Hi guys, I'm currently on a macbook with a 1TB external hard drive connected trough a USB hub wich is connected on my macbook. The problem is, my disk, wich is partitioned in 2 (one HFS+ and one NTFS) keeps getting corrupted, recently it was my HFS+ partition, I could not repair it using the Apple's Disk utility, but was able to backup my files. Is it synonym that my hard drive is failing? Is it because of my USB hub? I also keep all my iTunes library on my external HD (HFS+ partition), and did a lot of transfer lately, adding files, removing etc. the last time, my partition got corrupted after a lot of deleted items. If anybody has an idea of what to check first, what could cause the problem, I would appreciate it :) Thanks!

• Is it possible to boot from internet?

  Let's assume the following situation: you have a computer with empty hard disk, and you don't have a CD, floppy, pen drive nearby to boot the computer from. But you have connection to the Internet. Modern computers support network booting using PXE, but I haven't found anything regarding booting via the internet. So, is it possible to use PXE to load an image from the internet and boot it? By having a running system (even a minimal Linux) in RAM, it should be possible to install it on the hard disk, and build up a working system from here.

• Black screen with cursor after BIOS screen

  Here is a weird one, Got computer with Windows XP. It's getting stuck on a black screen with cursor blinking. What did I do: - Boot from installation CD (recovery option - command line): chkdsk C: /R copy D:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\ copy D:\i386\ntldr c:\ fixmbr fixboot Chkdsk showed 0 bad sectors and no problems during scan. dir on C:\ shows all directories and files in place (Windows, Program Files, Documents and Settings). BIOS shows correct boot drive. Still does not boot. Not sure what to think of. Please help. UPDATE: Just performed these steps: Backed up current disk C: (without MBR) using True Image to external hard drive Ran Windows XP clean installation with deleting all partitions and creating new one. Hard drive booted fine into Windows GUI installation!!! Then: I interrupted installation. Booted from True Image recovery CD and restored archive of disk C to an new partition. Same issue with black screen.

WHen i try to copy the data from the network and paste insid ethe Ubuntu it says error called "Cannot allocate memory " I have 3GB RAM attached to the Ubuntu I tried above suggestion but still im unbale to copy file from my host machine i.e. Windows XP to my Ubuntu machine ( which is at Virtual Machine) Im trying to copy jdk-1_5_0_22-linux-i586.bin file whose size is 47.4 MB Is there any other work around for this problem???? • Sony Vaio laptop hangs up on boot

  When I power on the laptop it displays the "Vaio" logo and the screen after show, but after that the screen is completely blank but the backlight is lit. Nothing progresses from here. When trying to press f8 to boot into safe mode, nothing happens, black screen again. I created a windows 7 32bit install disk (I had the same OS on it before) to repair or even format my pc. I boot from the disk and it loads all the files and gets to the "Windows is starting" screen but after that it always hangs up on a blank screen with a mouse cursor. Is there any fix to this whatsoever?

  I'm trying to configure an alert on low space on disk in Windows Server 2003, I already followed this step by step tutorial of microsoft. I try to execute a bat file created by me, located on the home folder of the user I'm using. I seted to trigger when the free space is below 6 GB when the disk have lower free space than 6 GB, the "Sample data interval" is the default (5 seconds). The problem is that the alert isnt triggered. And another thing, the user that is seted for the alert isnt the root user, but It have administration privileges. Thanks in advance

• Why sizes are different, and what do they mean?

  I have a 1 TB hard drive that consists of one NTFS partition which I use to back up my data (no operating system). The size of all the data in it is : 726 GB, size on disk: 728 GB, and the used space when I check the properties is: 731 GB. There's a 5 GB difference between the size and the used space. Why is that huge difference there? What's the difference between these sizes? (size, size on disk, and used space) Is there a way to calculate the difference, and be sure the HDD is not messing around? Is that normal?

I opened gparted magic and opened my hard disk and chose Create Partition Table and the disaster was done. All the partitions on my hard disk (500 GB) have been removed. What can I do? I tried to use PTDD Partition Table Doctor 3.5, but it didn't help. This drive had important data that I need to get back.

  How would I go about determining the guest's name given its GUID or vice-versa, preferably with only the Hyper-V/Server Core stock install at hands? Rationale: I am in favor of having a repository of dirty tricks to revert to when in great need. To immediately quiesce all (storage) operations of a VM guest without losing the state, I used to run kill 17 <all VM's virtual processes> (signaling SIGSTOP) and resumed afterwards using kill 19 <all VM's virtual processes> (signaling SIGCONT) in ESXi/vSphere shell. I tried the same technique with Hyper-V using Process Explorer's "Suspend" functionality on the vmwp.exe processes and it seemed to work. I have yet to find a way for easily identifying the processes to suspend, though - the vmwp command line is only listing a GUID.

  What are some good books or resources for learning automate virtual PCs on Windows DataCenter? I want to be able to build VPCs with both automated installs and from images, preferably via powershell. I would like to be able to setup an IIS environment for automated testing, and configure end user installs of different versions of Windows. I am not interested in corpnet type scenarios (active directory, domains, etc) so much for now. I'm comfortable with powershell and programming in general. I haven't yet installed Windows DataCenter, maybe once I install it will be clear enough. But looking for resources on how to managed virtual PCs programmatically I haven't found anything.

• Why is my PC boot time slow when USB HDD attached?

  I have a USB Hard disk that I am using as a secondary drive just for extra storage. When this is attached and I start my PC the second screen says searching for mass storage dives for about 5 minutes before continuing on. The same happens when I have a USB pen disk attached upon boot. If I attach the device after the PC has loaded then it is very quick however plugging and unplugging is not ideal. Is there away to disable this in the BIOS as I cannot instantly see an option. On boot it informs me I have an American Trends AMIBIOS in the BIOS setup it states the version as v02.58 2006. This is running on a ASUS MV2 Motherboard.

  I want to create Windows installation disk (not necessarily CD) from my Windows 7 Pro laptop, not sure what it actually means here. The material is about 50-60GB, requiring about 12 pcs of 5GB disk (not going to happen, too much work to use them later). I have the Windows serial on the laptop bottom and this is so-called firm -laptop (no idea what it actually mean, better warranty and some instant support thing apparently). Now how to do the clone with external material such as DVDs? how can I create mock-windows-installation medium or some real windows-installation medium? I am now not sure whether Windows offers W7 -installations medium online, well my W -peer mentioned some MSDAA -something. • Can't recover hard drive

  My drive got corrupt after a thunderstorm. It used to be 1 partition of 2.5tb but now it shows 2 partitions. It's weird because 300gig free space is about how much it had before corrupting, but it was part of the first partition. I tried $ sudo resize2fs -f /dev/sdb1 Resizing the filesystem on /dev/sdb1 to 536870911 (4k) blocks. resize2fs: Can't read an block bitmap while trying to resize /dev/sdb1 Please run 'e2fsck -fy /dev/sdb1' to fix the filesystem after the aborted resize operation. sudo e2fsck -f /dev/sdb1 e2fsck 1.42 (29-Nov-2011) The filesystem size (according to the superblock) is 610471680 blocks The physical size of the device is 536870911 blocks Either the superblock or the partition table is likely to be corrupt! Abort? n .... Error reading block 537395215 (Invalid argument) while reading inode and block bitmaps. Ignore error<y>? yes Force rewrite<y>? yes Error writing block 537395215 (Invalid argument) while reading inode and block bitmaps. Ignore error<y>? yes ... A lot of these. I can't use e2fsck -y because the first question aborts if I say "y". If I put a weight on the 'y' key it fails because none of the errors were really fixed. I asked this question before and tried using gparted but gparted fails because the first thing it does is: e2fsck -f -y -v /dev/sdb1 giving the same error. The disk status says healthy. There are no bad blocks. This is very frustrating because I can see the data in testdisk and it looks like it's all there. I already bought another 2.5tb drive and made a clone using dd. • Replacing a non-failing drive in a RAID-0 array

  I have a Windows 7 machine booting on a RAID-0 pair of 500GB disks, controlled by an ICH9R. One of those was indicating an end-To-end SMART failure, so I added a spare disk as a temporary workaround, before receiving another to replace the failing one. The RAID-0 rebuilt on the spare and dropped the failing one from the array, as expected. Now that I received the new drive, what are my options to reintegrate it in the array? My first thought was to simply clone the temporary disk to the new one while the array is offline, but shouldn't there be a way to force a second rebuild, just as if the temporary drive had a warning, and drop that temporary from the array?

• Is Clonezilla a good option for a daily batch-file-based backup of a Windows XP PC?

  Having just been through the process of rebuilding a Windows XP desktop machine when the disk died, I'm anxious to make it a lot less painful. I didn't lose any data, but reinstalling everything took ages. Clonezilla seems to be a highly mentioned free backup tool. How easy would it be to implement the following: a nightly unattended backup of the desktop's disk image to another network machine (or a second drive in the machine), hopefully with compression. restore from that image using USB boot media. so that if I come in to work and find the hard drive has tanked, it is just a matter of replacing the dead drive with a new one, booting from the USB stick, choosing the image to restore, and then finding something else to do for an hour or two. When it is finished I would hopefully be back to where I was.

• Syncing 1TB+ to a iSCSI device, software needed

  Hi, I need to sync a local disk to a iSCSI mount on Windows (server 2003), and I'm struggling to find software that's capable of doing so in a reasonable timeframe. Notes on the current 1TB disk: - 800GB currently in use - Contains a folder with several hundred thousand subfolders, which in turn have several thousand files, ... So I'm trying to find a piece of software that can handle such large filelists, and give me a good timeframe on when this will be copied. I've tried DeltaCopy (the rSync GUI client for Windows), but it's intolerably slow and doesn't provide me with a good estimate time remaining. • unable to format external drive to HFS+ for Mac

  I have an external hard drive (1 TB Western Digital) that is currently formatted as FAT32 and I want to reformat it to a single partition of HFS+ for my Mac. I realize that I can read FAT32 from my Mac but want HFS as it has other feathers like permissions that I'd like to have. I have tried using Disk Utility to format the drive as I have done in the past, but when I go through the process it fails and throws out an error stating that it is unable to reformat the drive to HFS. What might be the reasons that this could happen? Are there any diagnostics I could run on the physical disk to check if it is running well?
