• Improper integral calculation using numerical intergration

  I'm interested in calculation of Improper Integral for a function. Particularly it's a Gauss Integral. Using a numerical integration does make sense for a definite integrals but how should I deal with improper integrals ? Is there any was to extrapolate the function "around" negative infinity or should I just remove this part and start integration from some particular value because cumulative sum near "negative infinity" is almost non-existent for Gauss integral? Perhaps there are some algorithms that I'm not aware about.

• Organising dates in PHP

  Hi All, Im wanting to organize a series of dates in the following format. As a bit of context, the dates are the dates of upcoming events that can be added by my users. The format: January 2011 date - event date - event date - event February 2011 date - event date - event date - event with all events in a given month, arranged by the date on which they occur. All of my event dates are stored in my database as unix timestamps. Problem is, i dotn know where id start to develop a function that would order all of my events in this way. Can anyone help me out? • Problem with Zend_Date and ISO_8601 format

  Frankly, I'm flummoxed. Can anyone tell me why I would get a failure message with this code? $date = Zend_Date::now(); $date = $date->getIso(); if(Zend_Date::isDate($date, Zend_Date::ISO_8601)) { print('success'); } else { print('failure'); } exit; It also fails if I just pass in a Zend_Date object. We decided to go with Date.strptime for parsing and validation, which works great, except for how it just ignores any garbage data entered. • Excel 2010: if( , , "") not treated the same as blank for pivot table group by date

  I'm trying to group by date in an Excel 2010 pivot table. The column with dates (i.e., the one want to group by), should be the latest date of 2 other columns if neither is null, or blank. i.e., with a formula like: =IF(AND(A4 <> "", B4 <> ""), MAX(A4,B4), "") Normally, this ""in the IF() formula acts the same as an empty cell. In this case, it is preventing me from grouping by date in the Pivot Table. If I filter the date column by (Blanks), then clear the contents of all those cells, then the pivot table does group by date ok. i.e., "" is not being treated the same as an empty cell.

• Date header returned by IIS7 is wrong

  I am serving an ASP.NET application from IIS 7 but we are experiencing some weird cookie issues. The code works fine in other environments so we are assuming this is specific to this server (related question). We have been looking at the http headers returned and someone pointed out that the date http header is showing the 1st of Jan rather than today's date (so far it always shows that date regardless of what the current date is). The system clock is set correctly (and we can print out the current time/date via DateTime.Now correctly as well) so we can't work out why it's now working. Does anyone have any ideas? Is this a red-herring? Thanks, James

  I want to change the format of the "Date"-Column in the messagelist in Thunderbird. For mails from today, I want to display only the time, not the date. For mails from before today, I want to display only the date, not the time. This is btw the same setup mutt uses. I know of the this wiki article, which describes how to change the dateformat, but you can only switch between 5 predefined formats, and non of them is "Date only". I also know of this Extension, but it got the same limitations, you can't define a new date format. Thanks!

• C# 4.0: Dynamic Programming

  The major feature of C# 4.0 is dynamic programming. Not just dynamic typing, but dynamic in broader sense, which means talking to anything that is not statically typed to be a .NET object. Dynamic Language Runtime The Dynamic Language Runtime (DLR) is piece of technology that unifies dynamic programming on the .NET platform, the same way the Common Language Runtime (CLR) has been a common platform for statically typed languages. The CLR always had dynamic capabilities. You could always use reflection, but its main goal was never to be a dynamic programming environment and there were some features missing. The DLR is built on top of the CLR and adds those missing features to the .NET platform. The Dynamic Language Runtime is the core infrastructure that consists of: Expression Trees The same expression trees used in LINQ, now improved to support statements. Dynamic Dispatch Dispatches invocations to the appropriate binder. Call Site Caching For improved efficiency. Dynamic languages and languages with dynamic capabilities are built on top of the DLR. IronPython and IronRuby were already built on top of the DLR, and now, the support for using the DLR is being added to C# and Visual Basic. Other languages built on top of the CLR are expected to also use the DLR in the future. Underneath the DLR there are binders that talk to a variety of different technologies: .NET Binder Allows to talk to .NET objects. JavaScript Binder Allows to talk to JavaScript in SilverLight. IronPython Binder Allows to talk to IronPython. IronRuby Binder Allows to talk to IronRuby. COM Binder Allows to talk to COM. Whit all these binders it is possible to have a single programming experience to talk to all these environments that are not statically typed .NET objects. The dynamic Static Type Let’s take this traditional statically typed code: Calculator calculator = GetCalculator(); int sum = calculator.Sum(10, 20); Because the variable that receives the return value of the GetCalulator method is statically typed to be of type Calculator and, because the Calculator type has an Add method that receives two integers and returns an integer, it is possible to call that Sum method and assign its return value to a variable statically typed as integer. Now lets suppose the calculator was not a statically typed .NET class, but, instead, a COM object or some .NET code we don’t know he type of. All of the sudden it gets very painful to call the Add method: object calculator = GetCalculator(); Type calculatorType = calculator.GetType(); object res = calculatorType.InvokeMember("Add", BindingFlags.InvokeMethod, null, calculator, new object[] { 10, 20 }); int sum = Convert.ToInt32(res); And what if the calculator was a JavaScript object? ScriptObject calculator = GetCalculator(); object res = calculator.Invoke("Add", 10, 20); int sum = Convert.ToInt32(res); For each dynamic domain we have a different programming experience and that makes it very hard to unify the code. With C# 4.0 it becomes possible to write code this way: dynamic calculator = GetCalculator(); int sum = calculator.Add(10, 20); You simply declare a variable who’s static type is dynamic. dynamic is a pseudo-keyword (like var) that indicates to the compiler that operations on the calculator object will be done dynamically. The way you should look at dynamic is that it’s just like object (System.Object) with dynamic semantics associated. Anything can be assigned to a dynamic. dynamic x = 1; dynamic y = "Hello"; dynamic z = new List<int> { 1, 2, 3 }; At run-time, all object will have a type. In the above example x is of type System.Int32. When one or more operands in an operation are typed dynamic, member selection is deferred to run-time instead of compile-time. Then the run-time type is substituted in all variables and normal overload resolution is done, just like it would happen at compile-time. The result of any dynamic operation is always dynamic and, when a dynamic object is assigned to something else, a dynamic conversion will occur. Code Resolution Method double x = 1.75; double y = Math.Abs(x); compile-time double Abs(double x) dynamic x = 1.75; dynamic y = Math.Abs(x); run-time double Abs(double x) dynamic x = 2; dynamic y = Math.Abs(x); run-time int Abs(int x) The above code will always be strongly typed. The difference is that, in the first case the method resolution is done at compile-time, and the others it’s done ate run-time. IDynamicMetaObjectObject The DLR is pre-wired to know .NET objects, COM objects and so forth but any dynamic language can implement their own objects or you can implement your own objects in C# through the implementation of the IDynamicMetaObjectProvider interface. When an object implements IDynamicMetaObjectProvider, it can participate in the resolution of how method calls and property access is done. The .NET Framework already provides two implementations of IDynamicMetaObjectProvider: DynamicObject : IDynamicMetaObjectProvider The DynamicObject class enables you to define which operations can be performed on dynamic objects and how to perform those operations. For example, you can define what happens when you try to get or set an object property, call a method, or perform standard mathematical operations such as addition and multiplication. ExpandoObject : IDynamicMetaObjectProvider The ExpandoObject class enables you to add and delete members of its instances at run time and also to set and get values of these members. This class supports dynamic binding, which enables you to use standard syntax like sampleObject.sampleMember, instead of more complex syntax like sampleObject.GetAttribute("sampleMember").

• How do you pass a date value to BIRT report via querystring

  Hi, I have made a static html page (called start.jsp) containing a form where the user select 2 date ranges and this form has date pickers for those text boxes. When the user submits the form, it should take them to the BIRT report that I have designed. It SHOULD pass the 2 parameters that my report needs (start date and end date). Here is the querystring that gets appended to the URL birt-viewer/run__report=Business_Activity_Monitoring.rptdesign &FilterStartDate=2000-01-01&FilterEndDate=2009-01-01 I get an invalid date error: org.eclipse.birt.report.exception.ViewerValidationException: The parameter "FilterStartDate" is invalid. The value "06-08-2010" is invalid with the type "dateTime". How is it that if I remove the querystring completely, then BIRT will prompt me to enter the start date and end date (screenshot attached). I enter the exact same data that the form tries to send and it works!? This proves that my date string is correctly formatted but yet it will not accept them if they are sent to the BIRT report via the querystring? Seems like it has a problem with the fact that its a string in the first place. I have correctly set up these report parameters in my BIRT report. I have also tried changing them by specifying the "Format as" value to be a "custom" YYYY-MM-dd but this didnt work. Is it even possible to send date parameters to a birt report via querystring? Im guessing the solution will involve converting these strings to dates within the birt report's "script" tab. but I dont know how to access querystring variables from here or how to set report parameter variables.   Hi, I am implementing a full text search API for my rails apps, and so far have been having great success with Thinking Sphinx. I now want to implement a date range search, and keep getting the "bad value for range" error. Basically I am trying to have the API request pass in a "since" date to see all posts after a certain date. I am specifying that the date should be in the YYYY-MM-DD format. Thanks for your help.   I have been trying to work out what is the best way to search for gather all of the documents in a database that have a certain date. Originally I was trying to use FTsearch or search to move through a document collection, but I changed over to processing a view and associated documents. My first question is what is the easiest way to spin through a set of documents and find if a date stored in the documents is greater than or less than a specified date? So, to continue working I implemented the following code. If (doc.creationDate(0) > cdat(parm1)) And (doc.creationDate(0) < CDat(parm2)) then ... end if but the results are off Included! Date:3/12/10 11:07:08 P1:3/1/10 P2: 3/5/10 Included! Date:3/13/10 9:15:09 P1:3/1/10 P2: 3/5/10 Included! Date:3/17/10 16:22:07P1:3/1/10 P2: 3/5/10 You can see that the date stored in the doc is not between P1 and P2. BUT! it does limit the documents with a date less than P1 correctly. So I won't get a result for a document with a date less than 3/1/10 If there isn't a better way than the if statement, can someone help me understand why the two examples from above are included?

• jQuery/JavaScript Date form validation

  I am using the jQuery date picker calendar in a form. Once submitted the form passes params along via the url to a third party site. Everything works fine, except for one thing. If the value inserted into the date field by the datepicker calendar is subsequently deleted, or if the default date, that is in the form on page load, is deleted and the form is submitted I get the following error: "Conversion from string "" to type 'Date' is not valid." The solution to my problem is really simple, I want to validate the text field where the date is submitted and send out a default date (current date) if the field is empty for any reason. The problem is I am terrible at Javascript and cannot figure out how to do this. Here is the form code for my date field.   Does PHP calculate weeks as being Sunday - Saturday? For a given date I am trying to determine the beginning and ending date of it's week as well as the beginning date of the next/previous weeks. • Is there a way to insert a formatted calculation into Excel 2010 without using an image?

  I am maintaining a list of database column names, notes, and their calculations in an Excel 2010 spreadsheet. The calculations are included so as to document how to derive the values for the various columns and not for calculations within the spreadsheet. I have been entering the calculations into the cells simply as unformatted text like so: 100 - ((FiscalYearRegionConsumption - BaselineRegionConsumption) / (GoalRegionConsumption - BaselineRegionConsumption)) * 100 However, for long and/or complex calculations this could become rather unreadable. To improve readability and comprehension I would like to "pretty" print the calculation in an Excel cell. This would result in formatting that would like like this: The only solution I have come up with is to: Write the calculation in another application such as Word Take a screenshot of said calculation Past the screenshot into Excel The primary concern with this approach is maintenance. Should the calculation change or need correction I have to update two different sources of information. Is there a better way included a formatted calculation into an Excel cell?

• Extracting the Date from a DateTime in Entity Framework 4 and LINQ

  In my current ASP.NET 4 project, I’m displaying dates in a GridDateTimeColumn of Telerik’s ASP.NET Radgrid control. I don’t care about the time stuff, so my DataFormatString shows only the date bits: <telerik:GridDateTimeColumn FilterControlWidth="100px"   DataField="DateCreated" HeaderText="Created"    SortExpression="DateCreated" ReadOnly="True"    UniqueName="DateCreated" PickerType="DatePicker"    DataFormatString="{0:dd MMM yy}"> My problem was that I couldn’t get the built-in column filtering (it uses Telerik’s DatePicker control) to behave.  The DatePicker assumes that the time is 00:00:00 but the data would have times like 09:22:21. So, when you select a date and apply the EqualTo filter, you get no results. You would get results if all the time portions were 00:00:00. In essence, I wanted my Entity Framework query to give the DatePicker what it wanted… a Date without the Time portion. Fortunately, EF4 provides the TruncateTime  function. After you include Imports System.Data.Objects.EntityFunctions You’ll find that your EF queries will accept the TruncateTime function.   While working on some code recently I discovered a neat little trick to find the maximum value across several columns….. So the starting point was finding the maximum date across several related tables and storing the maximum value against an aggregated record. After considering pivoting the data I opted for a case statement, this seemed reasonable until I discovered other areas which needed to determine the maximum date between 5 or more tables which didn't scale well. The final solution involved using the value clause within a sub query as followed. • Cannot run logwatch due to Date::Manip issue

  I tried to run logwatch at follows [root@machine cron.daily]# ./0logwatch ERROR: Date::Manip unable to determine TimeZone. Execute the following command in a shell prompt: perldoc Date::Manip The section titled TIMEZONES describes valid TimeZones and where they can be defined. My date is as follows root@machine cron.daily]# date Thu Aug 23 06:25:21 GMT 2012 Now based on details in various forums I tried to fix this by setting /etc/timezone to “+0800” but it didn’t work My /etc/localtime points to /usr/share/zoneinfo/GMT and is managed by puppet How do I go about fixing this? I still want all my machines to be in GMT timezone. • Why does the file date always change to the current date?

  We are a programming shop, but this i snot a programming question. My boss has put an external HD on the network. It contains the 'home' folders for users on the network. He uses it to place VB projects that he wants me to work on. But no matter what date and time he places a project on the drive, the file dates(modified) always shows the current date, though nothing in the files have changed. It makes it very hard to confirm that he has given me the latest versions. (He is not a fan of version control and nothing I do will convince him different.) Any ideas why this happens and how to prevent it from happening? P.S. As I wrote this I decided to add the last accessed date to the file display, and those dates happen to show the dates I expect to see. Why is the modified date getting changed, but not the accessed date. Does the accessed date change only when the files are opened or read, changed or not? Note: I use Directory Opus 9, a replacement for windows file browser. Thanks, Marshall
