  • How to check if a server runs in pressing mode

    Hi there, Layout: i have at customer side a server (win2003 R2 SP2 standard edition 32-bit) with a sql-server 2005 and some databases. This system starts with the /3GB-Switch. The system reports 3.25 GB RAM and taskmanager reports the process of sqlserver.exe with 2758255 K as the process with the highest consumption. The OS separates RAM for applications and for itself, normaly 50:50. But here we have the /3GB-Switch aktivated and i think the part for the applications is more than 50% of RAM. Knowledge (or better not knowledge): Somebody told me that if the OS runs out of memory within his part of RAM, the server runs into pressing mode. Questions: What is this pressing mode? Is pressing mode possible at all in this szenario? What should be done to get more performance out of this sql-server, beside optimizing the database and all this stuff.

  • Virtualbox fullscreen mode problem

    hi all I have a slightly weird issue with virtualbox. My host OS is Win7 (64-bit) and guest OS is Ubuntu 10.10(64-bit). When I switch to fullscreen mode in virtualbox, ubuntu display resizes to fit my screen size. however, after that the display is not updated. So if i click a menu or something I don't see it appear. but it seems to work in the background. if i click a menu in fullscreen mode, i don't see anything happen, but if then switch to windowed mode I see the menu already open. I have installed virtuabox guest additions. if any has a similar issue or has found a solution please let me know thanks.

  • Pixelated PDF in Apple Preview slideshow mode, but not in regular window

    I have a PDF which is a presentation exported from OpenOffice. Two of the slides in this presentation have embedded .eps graphs. When I run the presentation using Preview's slideshow mode, the graphs are severely aliased and the axes are illegible. But when I just view the PDF in regular windowed mode, the graphs are properly antialiased and legible. Is there any way to get Preview to do the same display that it does in windowed mode, but in fullscreen (no window title, no menu bar)? (I don't want to just run the presentation from OpenOffice, because OpenOffice shows the same horrible aliasing effects plus it takes about 30 seconds to show the slide. I don't have, and don't want, Acrobat or MS Office. However, please do feel free to suggest other programs for doing PDF-based slideshows.)

  • Run non-interactive script in single user mode

    Is it possible to run a "startup" script when booting into single user mode? I need to be able to boot into single user mode, run my script, then reboot into multiuser mode without any human interaction. I've done a bunch of research and can't find anything that is clear on the topic, although of course I could replace something else that does run with a wrapper that also launches my script, but I'd prefer to do it in some official way. Ideally, the solution will work in FreeBSD 6 and up, but I'm willing to accept only new versions if it just doesn't exist in the older revs.

  • Run chromium-browser on Linux with fullscreen and application modes ON

    Some time ago chromium-browser was supporting a so called "kiosk mode", which could start chromium in fullscreen and removed unnecessary titlebar and some other UI components. Right now it looks like it's no longer supported. After few updates the same script that I was using for launching kiosk mode is not behaving the same. I checked some sites and learned that recently they introduced a so called "application mode" (--app=http://mysite.com). All cool and neat, but application mode does no longer enforce fullscreen. How could I force chromium-browser to behave exactly as in previous kiosk mode?

  • Install Ubuntu in UEFI mode (unable to boot from USB)

    I recently bought a Dell Inspiron 15R SE with Windows 8 (64 bit) pre-installed (UEFI supported). I want to install Ubuntu in dual boot with Windows 8. I tried to follow all instruction here : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI And here : Installing Ubuntu on a Pre-Installed Windows 8 (64-bit) System (UEFI Supported) So, I set Secure Boot to "off" into BIOS and I disable Fast Startup as described here : http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/6320-fast-startup-turn-off-windows-8-a.html I created a bootable USB key for Ubuntu (Ubuntu 13.10 64bits international Edition) with Unetbootin. The problem is I am unable to boot from the USB key. The computer tries to boot into infinite loop. I also tried to boot from USB with "Legacy Boot" option instead of UEFI. In this case, the computer says there are no bootable devices. Of course, I tried to boot from my USB key on an other computer having normal BIOS and it works perfectly. Have you ideas about what I need to do to be able to boot from USB ? Thanks in advance for your help, Adele

  • FTP Active vs passive mode

    I have a FTP server and while doing testing I found an odd issue that I don't understand. I send a RETR command on file "/Folder1/file.txt" and it works fine. Then I send a RETR command on file "/Folder1/SubFolder1/file.txt" and it times out on transfering the data to the client. This was in active mode. When I switch to passive mode it works fine. I understand the difference between the two modes, but what I don't understand is why it worked for one file in active mode, but not the other. I tried it a dozen times and still got the same results. Any ideas? Thanks!

  • Graphical Mode breaks after suspend/ returning from Console

    When I try to go to a virtual console (ctrl alt f1) and return to f7, my screen freaks out. Its black with frequent white 'lightning bolts' flashing across the screen. Nothing works, but to force shutdown. Same when trying to resume from suspend. This doesnt happen every time, but very often. I dont know what information might be useful but: Ubuntu 12.10 ATI RS880M [Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series] Gallium 0.4 on AMD RS880 this line in xsession-errors might be pertinent: (gnome-settings-daemon:1825): color-plugin-WARNING **: Done switch to new account, reload devices p.s. Ive tried the fglrx drivers but need the legacy drivers as described here, but nothing past a black screen.

  • Vim quit insert mode when navigate with mapping keys

    In order to move the cursor in insert mode, I add the following key maps in my .vimrc(I use vim 7.3 on Sun OS) inoremap <Alt-h> <Left> inoremap <Alt-j> <Down> inoremap <Alt-k> <Up> inoremap <Alt-l> <Right> When I press the mapping keys, the cursor moves correct, but vim will quit insert mode and switch to normal mode, what's wrong with my vim? I also tried this with my gvim on Windows, it works well. Did I lost any options for the mapping keys?

  • Make GRUB 2 boot Windows 8 safe mode

    I have a dual boot configuration: Windows 8 Consumer and Ubuntu 11.10. I tried to install the Asus drivers for my motherboard (P8Z68-V LE EFI) in windows 8, and i now get bluescreens when starting windows. Holding F8 or Shift-F8 doesn't seem to be working, so is there another way to get into Safe Mode, or uninstall the errant driver? I need to get into Safe Mode in windows to fix the issue. Things I have tried: Disabling overclock Holding F8 or Shift+F8 How can i get GRUB 2 to boot windows 8 in safe mode? Or is there another way to disable a driver that is making it impossible to boot?

    I have had this problem for a couple of years, probably due to the fact that all my settings get transferred when I log into Chrome: Most videos on the net play fine using Chrome, but on certain site none of the videos will play. This is not due to wrong codecs or something, because opening the same video using Chrome's Private Browsing Mode will play it just fine. Since most (all?) extensions are disabled when using Private Browsing Mode, I guessed the problem had to be found in my extensions, so I disabled all and also disabled developer mode.   • Cisco: changing VTP mode server/client to transparent

    I have around 40 L2 switches (2960, 3560, 3500, 3750) running in VTP client mode and one L3 switch (6500) running in VTP server mode, all connected together. I would like to switch everything in VTP transparent mode without any interruption of service. I've already test on a poc version with 3 switches (Catalyst 2950, 3560 and 3750). Using serial and SSH connection, it is seems working but i'm not sure it is enough representative compare to the real network. Knowing that the VTP Pruning is enabled, I am wondering what would be the best procedure to proceed the changement. I've read that we could lost connection by keeping it enabled. Should I change the server or clients first? Is it important to change the VTP domain and VTP Pruning parameters?

  • Multiply mode in SpriteBatch

    I have a "lighting" texture (black background with white or colours for lights) that I want to draw as a multiplcation operation. SpriteBatch.Begin can specify BlendState.Additive, but there's no BlendState.Multiplicative. I also tried the solution in this answer, but it didn't work -- even when I (incorrectly?) changed the code to work with XNA 4 style ColorDestinationBlend, I ended up with the final solution being inverted (black area where the light is, everything else is visible). I initially thought of a shader, but I couldn't get shaders to work with MonoGame, so I'm falling back to SpriteBatch.

  • Ubuntu is stuck when it goes to sleep mode in fullscreen

    If there is a full screen terminal running when Ubuntu goes to sleep, it becomes stuck. This is not the problem with gnome-terminal as sometimes firefox in full screen also causes this problem. With firefox this doesn't happen every time. But with gnome-terminal this happens everytime and as explained in this answer, I use killall command and kill the application. Is this a bug and what can be done to aviod this?

    After a number of failed attempts on installing Ubuntu and Linux in the hybrid-gpt of Windows, in which I wanted different partitions by gparted, I ended up creating againg a conventional partitions table within the conventional system. This photo is not mine because as creating the partition I did not think in taking photos, but I am showing you it so that you can see the format “MS-DOS”, the standard format of gparted. My neetbook is a k55MV Asus 500GB (the page don't allow me to put 3 hiperlink I will put it at the end in a new coment 1) I installed Windows by creating a partition just for it. Windows created two partitions else for starting the system up. However creating it on ms-dos appear now in gpt view fotos 2) With the rest of the space, I created a 90-gigabyte partition for Ubuntu and the “swap” of 4 gb. The other partitions are for data. 3) I assured myself about installing Ubuntu in the partition whose format was ext4, for using that partition as base and to install the “grub” on the base of 500gb. I have boot the system up, Ubuntu is loaded but the grub does not appear. I have tried by pressing “beginning” “UPPER CASE LETTER”, but no way!     I created a LiveUSB of Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS using Pendrive Linux. -Created a separate 30GB partition using Windows 8 Disk Management -Disabled Secure Boot (Didn't find an option to disable EFI boot) -Disabled Fast Startup The laptop starts the GRUB menu shows up but it doesn't go beyond that no matter what option i choose. After choosing any option the screen goes blank but the power is still on i can see the power light.   • How can I debug user mode driver failures in Windows 8

    I have a 32 GB SD Card. Whenever I insert this card in to my newly upgraded Windows 8 laptop the OS stops responding normally. Metro Apps won't work. The system may or may not log in. Desktop apps may or may not be able to do things. When I remove the card and restart then all is fine. As soon as I put the card back in, the system starts misbehaving again. I've run Windows Update, so I have the latest drivers from Microsoft. This does not occur with the 8 GB cards I have. Unfortunately I only have one 32 GB card, so I can't test with others. From examining the system event log I've determined this is happening due to a user mode driver failure. How can I best debug this issue from here? How can I figure out which driver this is related to? Will there be a Dr. Watson crash dump somewhere?   • How to debug slow queries in Django+Postgres

    My database queries from Django are starting to take 1-2 seconds and I'm having trouble figuring out why. Not too big a site, about 1-2 requests per second (that hit Django; static files are just served from nginx.) The thing that confuses me is, I can replicate the slowness in the Django shell using debug mode. But when I issue the exact same queries at an sql prompt they are fast. It takes about a second for a query to return, but when I check connection.queries it reports the time as under 10 ms.   • Error when using mailto: link in Mobile Safari in app-capable mode

    I've got a form in a web page with an action that is "mailto:email" (where email is a real email address). When I load this page in Mobile Safari in regular mode (ie, not launched from home screen with app-capable mode), this works fine - after I submit the form, the email app comes up. However, when I'm in app-capable mode and have launched from the home screen (so, no Safari chrome), and submit the form I get the error "URL can't be shown". However, a regular mailto: link (ie, not in a form) does work when in app-capable mode. Has anyone else noticed this? Any workarounds? Are forms disallowed in app-capable mode? Thanks, Elisabeth

  • Freezing a dual-mode (GUI and console) application using cx_Freeze

    Hi, I've developed a Python application that runs both in the GUI mode and the console mode. If any arguments are specified, it runs in a console mode else it runs in the GUI mode. I've managed to freeze this using cx_Freeze. I had some problems hiding the black console window that would pop up with wxPython and so I modified my setup.py script like this: import sys from cx_Freeze import setup, Executable base = None if sys.platform == "win32": base = "Win32GUI" setup( name = "simple_PyQt4", version = "0.1", description = "Sample cx_Freeze PyQt4 script", executables = [Executable("PyQt4app.py", base = base)]) This works fine but now when I try to open up my console and run the executable from there, it doesn't output anything. I don't get any errors or messages so it seems that cx_Feeze is redirecting the stdout somewhere else. Is is possible to get it to work with both mode?   • the breakpoint will not currently be hit no symbols loaded

    I want to debug on the customer's machine (Windows Server 2003) to track a problem, and out product is based on .NET 2.0. I want to use DbgCLR.exe to debug a file AAA.dll, what I did is: install .NET 2.0 SDK on the customer's machine (to get the DbgCLR.exe) copy the symbol file AAA.pdb to the same directory with AAA.dll get the source file for AAA.dll the AAA.dll will be loaded by w3wp.exe, so in the DbgCLR Tools-Attach to Process, then I choose w3wp.exe File-Open-File open the source file and add a breakpoint in the function which will be callled but the breakpoint seems do no work because there is an warning icon on it and says : the breakpoint will not currently be hit. No symbols have been loaded for this document. On my computer (Windows XP) which has the debug version of whole source code, I did nearly the same thing as above but the different is: I attached aspnet_wp.exe to do the debug and it works What should I do to let it work on the customer's machine?

    I use System.Windows.Media.RenderCapability.Tier to show the current render mode within a diagnostics panel of my app. If I force the app (3.5sp1) to change the render-mode through the following code HwndSource hwndSource = PresentationSource.FromVisual(visual) as System.Windows.Interop.HwndSource; HwndTarget hwndTarget = hwndSource.CompositionTarget; hwndTarget.RenderMode = renderMode; neither System.Windows.Media.RenderCapability.TierChanged fires, nor has the System.Windows.Media.RenderCapability.Tier property changed. However the changes are applied to the app. If I look with Perforator, the render mode has been changed to the desired mode. Although I’ve found at many locations that System.Windows.Media.RenderCapability.Tier can be used to detect the current render state (also msdn, see this), it seems, System.Windows.Media.RenderCapability only gives information about the capabilities and not about the current mode. That makes also sense if I look at the name of the class. Is there another source to know how an actual wpf-content is rendered or am I doing something wrong?
