• Suggestions for someone wanting to become a Laptop Reseller

  First of all, to give you a little background... I have had my Microsoft A+ for several years now. I used to run a small business repairing Xbox 360 consoles and I am currently a Network Engineer for a company in Ohio. I definitely know my way around a computer. I miss running a small business on the side and I'd like to get something going again. There is a really high demand in my area for Laptops and I was thinking about starting a small Laptop store out of my house. What is the best way to do this? I was assuming that the best way would be to buy barebones systems and build them yourself. If this is the best method, I would be very interested in any resources to get parts and such. Apparently Laptop parts aren't the easiest thing to come by (especially at a good price). Does anyone have any suggestions about how to get something like this going?

  When building your own computer one part was always a mystery to me: the motherboard. Picking a CPU/GPU/memory is easy- you just figure out where the various chips are in the low end to high end scale, do a little market research on what current games demand, and pick the parts from their respective continuums of low-to-high-end models. A mother board is more complicated though. Its features are not as obvious as "this motherboard is faster than that motherboard". Now you need to deal with part compatibilities, bus speeds, maybe power management stuff, etc. I'm interested in a short guide for selecting a motherboard, especially- what pitfalls to avoid (for example, can bus speed become a bottleneck?). To clarify: I'm not looking for motherboard recommendations. I'm looking for guidance regarding how to evaluate the fitness of a motherboard given the rest of the computer parts.

• Using Arch Linux computer as a server for Rack Apps

  What would be the best way to go about using an Arch Linux computer as a Rack (as in Ruby Rack, not an actual rack server) server? Here's what I want to be able to do: Automatically deploy on a git push to the server. (I already have this worked out, on post-receive the server checks out the app to /home/git/app from /home/git/app.git.) Run a Rack server application to serve up this app, one that can be restarted on demand. Run a MongoDB server Be able to access the app by going to my-server.local/app or something similar. (It's really only going to be used on the local network, no port forwarding or outside use) Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I apologize if this seems too "do it for me".

• My powershell script wont save a file when run using Task Scheduler, do I need to specify a specific argument?

  I have a script that downloads a temporary Excel file, copies parts of it to a new file, and saves it to a specific location on the network. The problem I'm having is that the new file is never created/saved. If I run the script locally (through cmd.exe, powershell, or powershell ise), it WILL save the file locally, or to the network. If I try running the script via a schedule or on-demand via Task Scheduler, the temporary file is created, but the final document is never created or saved. Is there a specific argument I need to pass, or anything I could be doing wrong? This is the command I'm currently using: powershell.exe -file C:\path\to\my\powershell\script\thescript.ps1 Since it calls environment variables, and other variables relative to the scripts positon, I also set "Start in" to C:\path\to\my\powershell\script\

• Does Exchange have ability to run hidden mailboxes?

  Hello, Title of my question may sound a little bit odd but I was thinking if Exchange 2010 or 2007 or any program that would work in conjunction with Exchange has ability to create this structure: Users having their normal mailboxes connected and using them as everyone would in Outlook 2003/2007/2010. Users having additional mailboxes (from old Exchange 2003) attached but hidden on demand of Administrator. For example administrator could easy disable them just like they never been attached making them invisible to users and everyone else. Would be good if such mailboxes could be easily removed out of system (lets say on external drive) by simple step not manual job for 100 mailboxes. Users without ability to copy/move their mails to outside storage (like a local .pst file)? Do you guys have any suggestions on this? I was thinking maybe using public folders but this seems like overkill and not really suited for this. And please don't ask me why I need this type of security (it's not something I requested).

  Hi All, I'm trying to learn to be a Unix/Linux Sysadmin, and am hoping to get some hands-on experience by setting up a few installs (VMs, old comps, and the like) at home and practicing administering them. I was wondering, in the experience of those on this site, which distros are critical to be comfortable with. Obviously, to a certain extent, they're all similar, but there are substantial enough differences between administering, say, Debian, OpenSolaris, FreeBSD, and CentOS. So, which distros are most important to practice with in your opinion? Which have had most demand/come up most often in actual work situations? Thanks!

  At our company we set up an OpenStack Cloud and are currently creating internal guidelines for creation of OS templates / images. One controversial topic was if we should provide swap inside the VM templates. Therefore I'd like to ask the following questions From an elastic Cloud provider point of view, does it make sense to offer swap partitions / files in the VM templates or is swap not needed when a VM can be resized? Which scenarios necessarily demand a swap file to be present? What kind of Storage should be used for swap files (e.g. local / central, FC / iSCSI / NFS)? Are there any best practices for offering swap files in a performant way in Cloud Infrastructures?

• Why no Win16 support in 64-bit Windows?

  My understanding (from Wikipedia) is that the x64 instruction set supports executing 16-bit protected mode code from long mode, but cannot execute real mode code without being switched out of long mode because long mode lacks virtual 8086 mode. Therefore, it stands to reason that real mode DOS apps can't be run in Win64 w/o software emulation or dynamic translation. However, why was support for Win16 protected-mode apps excluded when support for them seems (at least at first glance) to be reasonably implementable and is included in newer versions of Win32? Was it just a matter of demand not being high enough to justify implementation costs (and the win32 version was already implemented), or is there a good technical reason?

• Choosing a monitoring system for a dynamically scaling environment: Nagios v. Zabbix

  When operating in the cloud and scaling boxes automatically, there are certain monitoring issues that one experiences. Sometimes we might be monitoring 10 boxes and sometimes 100. The machines will scale up and down based on a demand. Right now, I think the best solution to this is to choose a monitoring solution that will instantiation of targets via calls to an API. But, is this really the best? I like the idea of dynamic discovery, but that is also a problem in the cloud seeing that the targets are not all in the same subnet. What monitoring solutions allow for a scaling environment like this? Zabbix currently has a draft API but I have been unable to fund a similar API for Nagios. Is there a similar API for Nagios? Anyone have any alternate suggestions besides Nagios and Zabbix?

• It's the ethernet 10/100 in LAN transfer faster than USB 1.0?

  I have an old laptop (PIII 800MHz, with 256 RAM) that I wish to use as my home server: it'll have to serve just two people, so I think that I'll be more than ok as for the RAM and the CPU. The issue is about data, because the internal hard disk is a 12GB, that is...ridicolous! I have more than 60GB of mixed storage and counting (images, videos and music) in an external usb hd. I could put the hd in my desktop pc just to serve the big files through ethernet or let it inside its usb box attached to the laptop. The question is: which of these solutions will be the fastest? USB 1.0 attached to the server (laptop) or internal hard disk serving files via 10/100 ethernet to the laptop on demand?

• IIS FTP server not working after purchase of SSL certificate

  I've been connecting to my web server with active mode in FileZilla with no problems. Over the weekend, an SSL certificate was dropped into a folder that I access with FTP, and which contains files for the website. Now I am receiving a 425 error in active mode on the FTP root, so I can't really do anything but log in. In passive mode, I can connect and move around in the directory tree, but the connection seems shaky. Occasionally I'll time out, and I can't get access at all to the folder containing the SSL certificate. My question is how does the SSL certificate affect my FTP connection (if at all)? Does its presence demand the use of FTP over SSL? Note: As far as I know, the only change which occurred was the placement of the SSL certificate. Firewall settings, FTP client and server settings should all be the same as before, when everything was working.

• Windows 7 root certificate updates

  I work for a company that uses Windows 7 for end user computing. The Windows 7 computers are updated via a WSUS installation, and access to Microsoft Update is blocked. We have a problem with a number of websites, who's certificates appears to be invalid, though they are perfectly ok. The problem is, that Windows 7 apparently does an on-demand update of root certificates through Windows Update, rather than rolling out a monthly update, as with Windows XP. Now that Windows Update is blocked, how should root certificates be updated? It appears that WSUS is not handling this feature. Thanks in advance.

  I am new to virtualization. I am running on ubuntu. I have a set of linux machines (5 to 6 machines). Which I want to combine as a single resource pool and on demand create multiple virtual instances of machines out of it. This is comparable to what VirtualBox does in a single system. I stumbled across many key words: Xen, Eucalyptus, OpenStack etc. But things are very vague as to which will help me achieve this requirement. Any help will be appreciated :) Thanks in advance!

• Hardware changes to require XP Activation ? (for a Virtual Machine)

  I have WXP-64 running on a VM and, for testing and performance reasons, I would like to occasionally change the allocations for it. Changes might include: Number of CPU cores, Amount of RAM Add/remove network adapters. But I'm concerned that XP will demand re-activation and that I might eventually have licensing issues if I do this. So, can anyone tell me: What kind of changes trigger re-activation in XP? Is there limits or caveat with regard to re-activation? I've perused this question and the article it references, but wanted more recent and verified info. (FWIW, I'm not trying to cheat: the OS copy was purchased explicitly for the VM.)

• unlock database files when SQL server is idle

  In my development/test environment on my laptop, I can't back up the SQL server database files because the file handles are kept permanently open by SQL server (VSS doesn't work because the drive is truecrypted) I was hoping there may be some setting in SQL server that can make it unlock the data files after a certain period of inactivity and automatically open them again on demand, but I can't find anything. I don't really want to be dumping the database out every night because it's only a development environment. apart from stopping sql server before I do the backup is there any other solution?

• mongodb eating 48G in 1min

  In mongodb i work with this collection: Size 55.93g Data Size 39.82g Storage Size 41.08g Extents 53 Indexes 4 Index Size 9.64g It takes few seconds of mongdb being up with this single collection and all 48GB RAM on the dedicated server are gone. That's worse because there is also a mysqld+nginx/fcgi on this machine which should be allowed to use at least 24GB together. I.e. remaining 24GB, enough for the mongod! However, it does not share in a fair way. Everybody says that the memory for mongod is managed by OS and releases unneccessary space for other processes if they demand RAM. On my machine it is not releasing RAM. • How do I display the Java console?

  I'm aware of the fact that you can set it to "show" in the Java control panel, but that's not what I'm asking about. I'm curious about the other options... "Do not start" is pretty straightforward, but what about "Hide"? That would seem to imply that it is indeed running. If so, how can I make it show on demand from the hidden state? Reason: It's annoying to have it open ALL the time, hoping there's a way to (preferably via keystroke) bring it from "hidden" to "shown" state for occasional debugging.

• Reuse security code between WCF and MVC.NET

  First the background: I jumped into MVC.NET from the Java MVC world, so my implementation below is possibly cheating, I don't know. I avoided fooling with a custom membership provider and I just implemented the base code needed to authenticate and load roles in my LogOn action. Typically I just need to check roles programatically, and have no use for all of the other membership features, so I didn't originally think I needed a full Membership provider. I have a successful WCF project with a custom authentication and authorization layer that I did at least write per the proper API. I implemented it with custom IPrincipal, UserNamePasswordValidator and IAuthorizationPolicy classes to load from an Oracle database. In my WCF services, I use declarative security: [PrincipalPermission(SecurityAction.Demand, Role="ADMIN")]. The question (on the ASP.NET/MCV.NET side): All my reading indicates I should implement a custom Membership/Roles provider, and use [Authorize(Roles="ADMIN")] on my controller actions. At this point, I don't have a true Membership provider, but I'm using the same User class that implements the IPrincipal interface that works with the WCF security. I plan to share common code between the WCF and ASP.NET modules. So my LogOn action is not using the FormsService (and I assume this is bad). I had commented it out, and just used my "UserService" to access the Oracle db. Can I stick the IPrincipal (User) into the CurrentContext or HttpContext? Can I integrate the custom IPrincipal I've already created without writing a full Membership/Roles Provider? I currently stick the User object into the session and access it from all MVC.NET controllers with "CurrentUser" property which grabs it from the session on demand. But this doesn't work with the [Authorize] attribute; I assume that is because it knows nothing about my custom Principal in the session, and is instead using whatever FormsService.SignIn() produces. I also found that session timeouts screw up the login redirect, the user doesn't get forwarded, instead we get a null exception accessing User from the session, and I assume it is related to my "skipping steps" to get a quick implementation. • Microsoft .NET Web Programming: Web Sites versus Web Applications

  In .NET 2.0, Microsoft introduced the Web Site. This was the default way to create a web Project in Visual Studio 2005. In Visual Studio 2008, the Web Application has been restored as the default web Project in Visual Studio/.NET 3.x The Web Site is a file/folder based Project structure. It is designed such that pages are not compiled until they are requested ("on demand"). The advantages to the Web Site are: 1) It is designed to accommodate non-.NET Applications 2) Deployment is as simple as copying files to the target server 3) Any portion of the Web Site can be updated without requiring recompilation of the entire Site. The Web Application is a .dll-based Project structure. ASP.NET pages and supporting files are compiled into assemblies that are then deployed to the target server. Advantages of the Web Application are: 1) Precompiled files do not expose code to an attacker 2) Precompiled files run faster because they are binary data (the Microsoft Intermediate Language, or MSIL) executed by the CLR (Common Language Runtime) 3) References, assemblies, and other project dependencies are built in to the compiled site and automatically managed. They do not need to be manually deployed and/or registered in the Global Assembly Cache: deployment does this for you If you are planning on using automated build and deployment, such as the Team Foundation Server Team Build engine, you will need to have your code in the form of a Web Application. If you have a Web Site, it will not properly compile as a Web Application would. • Token based Authentication for WCF HTTP/REST Services: Authorization

  In the previous post I showed how token based authentication can be implemented for WCF HTTP based services. Authentication is the process of finding out who the user is – this includes anonymous users. Then it is up to the service to decide under which circumstances the client has access to the service as a whole or individual operations. This is called authorization. By default – my framework does not allow anonymous users and will deny access right in the service authorization manager. You can however turn anonymous access on – that means technically, that instead of denying access, an anonymous principal is placed on Thread.CurrentPrincipal. You can flip that switch in the configuration class that you can pass into the service host/factory. var configuration = new WebTokenWebServiceHostConfiguration {     AllowAnonymousAccess = true }; But this is not enough, in addition you also need to decorate the individual operations to allow anonymous access as well, e.g.: [AllowAnonymousAccess] public string GetInfo() {     ... } Inside these operations you might have an authenticated or an anonymous principal on Thread.CurrentPrincipal, and it is up to your code to decide what to do. Side note: Being a security guy, I like this opt-in approach to anonymous access much better that all those opt-out approaches out there (like the Authorize attribute – or this.). Claims-based Authorization Since there is a ClaimsPrincipal available, you can use the standard WIF claims authorization manager infrastructure – either declaratively via ClaimsPrincipalPermission or programmatically (see also here). [ClaimsPrincipalPermission(SecurityAction.Demand,     Resource = "Claims",     Operation = "View")] public ViewClaims GetClientIdentity() {     return new ServiceLogic().GetClaims(); }   In addition you can also turn off per-request authorization (see here for background) via the config and just use the “domain specific” instrumentation. You can place your pre-order through its online store (Apple) or reserve it at any of the Apple retail stores. iPAD may have received mixed reactions when announced last month. But Apple knows how to sell; it is believed that more than 50,000 pre orders are already placed till now placed till now. People have to wait for another 3 weeks to get the actual device as the launch date is 3rd of April in the US. The initial model released will be available only with Wi-Fi and the planned 3G model is expected to be released by end of April. So how much does it cost you to get this little marvel?
