• Best way to restrict FTP access to a single directory?

  I have a VPS running Ubuntu 10.04, and I'd like to give someone SFTP access to a single directory, but prevent them from seeing anything else on the system. What's the best way to pull this off? I considered removing "everyone" permissions from everything on the system, but that seems like a really blunt tool for this problem (and one that'll cause other issues) - I'm hoping there's a better option here. Edit: I appreciate the answers! (And I learned a bunch reading/researching through them). I ended up finding and using this guide from Linode as it spelled all the steps: http://library.linode.com/security/sftp-jails/

• Joomla in Windows is catching my access to a Virtual Directory where I placed my MVC application

  In our windows hosting we use the root (wwwroot) folder to host a JOOMLA website as public website. This is running IIS 7. Then, we created a virtual directory called "App" to host there a ASP.NET MVC4 application. When I enter www.mydomain.com it shows the joomla website correctly. When I enter www.mydomain.com/App/ it somehow access my MVC app... as I see the URL changing to www.mydomain.com/App/Account/LogOn?ReturnUrl=%2fApp%2f BUT shows a 404 Joomla error as if it were looking that URL in Joomla. BTW, the hosting has 2 ASP.NET IIS Setup options: 4.0 Classic and 4.0 integrated. Using the Integrated one... it displays a blank page... using the classic one shows the 404 Joomla page. Any idea where to look for this?

• Override template shell on linux system in Active Directory domain?

  Is there an easy way to override the Samba "template shell = /bin/bash" setting on a per-user basis? This is for Linux systems joined to an Active Directory domain. Some users want /bin/bash. Others including myself want /bin/zsh. Is there some AD attribute I can set? Anything I've found via googling seems hackish at best (writing a script to replace /bin/sh -- maintenance hassle). A similar serverfault question Override LDAP shell seems OpenLDAP-oriented (but if someone knows how to get it working with AD, please say so).

• WIFI connection interfering with Windows Server 2003 Active Directory domain. (How to debug?)

  RELATED: This question has led me to ask this one. I had to change our unnamed crappy ADSL router to a crappy Comtrend CT-5361 WiFi router, now every WiFi connection to the domain doesn't work correctly: Joining the domain is impossible (see related question) Logging into the domain takes ages Authentication usually fails Question: How to debug this and pinpoint the exact problem? I have no enough knowledge on either WiFi networks or on Active Directory to know which connections are made at which stages nor how to check what's happening at the wireless level to compare what should happen to what is happening. I'm looking for resources to learn what should be happening and tools to detect what is actually happening (I expect a sniffer should be enough, but if there are better, more specialized tools, that'd be great).

• FTP on Linux "Failed to retrieve directory listing" not firewall issue

  I've got an VPS in germany running Debian X64. I have very strange issue. I have ISPConfig CP installed using proftpd and I can not connect to FTP by any means. Few hours ago I've had installed DirectAdmin on CentOS same VPS and same issue. Simply when I connect to FTP server I get these: Status: Resolving address of web02.defikon.com Status: Connecting to 130.255.190.71:21... • To Ajax or Not to Ajax a listing page

  Here i am talking about product listing pages where there are multiple filters that filter the list of products appearing on the page like product types, categories price range etc. I have done such pages using both ajax and no ajax way in the past. What I like about using ajax in such page is that, when filters are selected I only update the section that contains the product list. There is no need to refresh the whole page which could end up re-loading the images on top bar, banners etc and slow down the user performance. Ajax way in my opinion becomes more compact and responsive from user experience. Down side for ajax route for me is; since filter states are not maintained in the URL I end up maintaining them on the server. This becomes complicated if I want to handle multi window scenarios and it is also costly to maintain such state on server memory for each session. Not using ajax and simply keeping all filter values on url and refreshing the page is quite simple but the luxury of refreshing only the pane that really needs to be refreshed is lost. Lately I am seeing a lot of large scale e-commerce sites that are using non-ajax approach on their listing pages and this is making me question one more time if it might be more efficient to build non-ajax listing make due to the long term maintenance ease and sacrifice a little bit from user experience. I am about to start implementing a new listing page for a product which I have the flexibility to go either way and I would appreciate your inputs.

• Active directory over SSL Error 81 = ldap_connect(hLdap, NULL);

  I have been several day to getting AD over SSL (LDAPS) I followed exactly this guide. I have Active Directory Certifica Service installed (stand alone Root CA), I can request cert, install certs. but whenever I want to test the connection using LDP.exe I got this famous error ld = ldap_sslinit("localhost", 636, 1); Error 0 = ldap_set_option(hLdap, LDAP_OPT_PROTOCOL_VERSION, 3); Error 81 = ldap_connect(hLdap, NULL); Server error: <empty> Error <0x51>: Fail to connect to localhost. I have been searching, I know there are many thing can cause of this error, I tried most thing I can then I decided to post it here. I tried to look if any error in system log, but nothing :/ (but I could be wwrong) can anyone tell me what else to look? UPDATE: I restarted AD service following error showed in event viewer: LDAP over Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) will be unavailable at this time because the server was unable to obtain a certificate. Additional Data Error value: 8009030e No credentials are available in the security package

• Why does Mac OS X Software Update not work when machine uses Active Directory?

  My company's IT department is mostly a Windows run operation and in order to become more secure, they are altering the way that the Macintosh computers login to our internal network so that they use Active Directory like their Windows counterparts. I have been given Administrative permission on my Mac and I am able to do most of what I used to be able to do in terms of authentication of software installations. However, there is a problem: the "Software Update" feature doesn't work. What happens is that when I try to get the Mac to perform its Software Updates from the Apple menu, the normal window appears listing what has to be updated; I am able to select what to update and click the "Update" button, but then nothing happens. It doesn't ask for authentication like it used to, the computer doesn't perform any download or installation (it does sometimes ask me to agree to license agreements for iTunes). I can download the updates individually and install them without any issues, but the auto-update fails. I'd rather use the Software Update menu item like I used to: it is much more convenient. Any suggestions on how I can fix this? EDIT Nov 19th, 2009, 10:09 EST: I have posted this question to the Apple Mac OS X Snow Leopard support forum. EDIT Nov 19th, 2009, 12:39 EST:Yes, the Terminal command "sudo softwareupdate --install --all" does work flawlessly. I want to avoid that as my co-workers are generally not comfortable on the Mac. I also tried Chealion's suggestion to delete "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist" and "/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist", Software Update still fails. However, I did get diagnostic messages in the Console (below). I've deleted the MS Office Package Receipts and examined the suhelperd (Software Update Helper Daemon?); it appears that suhelperd is crashing and that explains why it doesn't work. I've submitted a bug report to Apple (radar://7408619). The only solution I found so far is creating a THIRD group in AD, and assign a source rule and an ACL to it; but this setup grows exponentially with more than two or three destination sets. Is there any way to handle this better?

• Pitfalls to using Gluster as a home/profile directory server?

  I was asking recently about options for divvying up access to file servers, as we have a NAS solution that gets fairly bogged down when our users (with giant profiles, especially) all log in nearly simultaneously. I ran across Gluster and it looks like it can cluster different physical storage media into a single virtual volume and share it out like a virtual NAS from the client perspective and it support CIFS. My question is whether something like this would be feasible to use for home and profile directories in an active directory environment. I was worried about ACL's, primarily, as I didn't think CIFS was fine-grained enough to support NTFS permissions and it didn't look like Gluster exports those permission levels, just the base permissions for basic file sharing. I got the impression that using Gluster would allow for data to be redundant across multiple servers and would speed up access to the files under heavy load, while allowing us to dynamically boost storage capacity by just adding another server and telling Gluster's master node to add that server. Maybe I'm wrong with my understanding of it though. Anyone else use it or care to share how feasible this is?

• Can I get all active directory passwords in clear text using reversible encryption?

  EDIT: Can anybody actually answer the question? Thanks, I don't need no audit trail, I WILL know all the passwords and users can't change them and I will continue to do so. This is not for hacking! We recently migrated away from a old and rusty Linux/Samba domain to an active directory. We had a custom little interface to manage accounts there. It always stored the passwords of all users and all service accounts in cleartext in a secure location (Of course, many of you will certainly not think of this a being secure, but without real exploits nobody could read that) and disabled password changing on the samba domain controller. In addition, no user can ever select his own passwords, we create them using pwgen. We don't change them every 40 days or so, but only every 2 years to reward employees for really learning them and NOT writing them down. We need the passwords to e.g. go into user accounts and modify settings that are too complicated for group policies or to help users. These might certainly be controversial policies, but I want to continue them on AD. Now I save new accounts and their PWGEN-generated (pwgen creates nice sounding random words with nice amounts of vowels, consonants and numbers) manually into the old text-file that the old scripts used to maintain automatically. How can I get this functionality back in AD? I see that there is "reversible encryption" in AD accounts, probably for challenge response authentication systems that need the cleartext password stored on the server. Is there a script that displays all these passwords? That would be great. (Again: I trust my DC not to be compromised.) Or can I have a plugin into AD users&computers that gets a notification of every new password and stores it into a file? On clients that is possible with GINA-dlls, they can get notified about passwords and get the cleartext.

• Does this exist: a standardized way of documenting a file-system structure

  At work, I'm in charge of maintaining the organization of a whole lot of varied data on a standard file-system. Part of this is coming up with sensible classification (by similarity, need, read/write access, etc), but the bigger part is actually documenting it: what documents/files/media should go where, what should not be in this directory, "for something slightly different, see ../../other-dir", etc. At the moment, I've documented this using a plaintext file filing.txt in every directory I want to document. If someone is unsure what's meant to be in any directory, they read that file. This works alright, but it seems odd that I have this primitive custom solution to a problem that any maintainer of a non-trivial directory structure must experience. Every company I've known of, for example, has some kind of shared file-system where agreed terminology for categorization is important. In my experience, people just have to learn what's what by trial-and-error and experimentation. So allow me to propose a better solution, and hopefully you can tell me if it exists. Any directory on any filesystem can have a hidden plaintext file named .filing. Its contents are descriptive human language. It uses some markup like Markdown, with little more than bold, italic, and (relative) hyperlinks to other directories. Now a suitably-enabled file browser will check for a file named .filing whenever it displays a directory. If it exists, its contents are parsed and displayed in an unobtrusive pane near the directory-path widget. Any links therein can be clicked, and the user will be taken to the target directory of that link. I think that the effort of implementing such a standard would pay back many times over in usability gains. We would have, say, plugins for Nautilus, Konqueror, etc.. It could be used to display directory information in the standard file lists served by webservers. And so on. So, question: does such a thing exist? If not, why not? Do people think it's a worthwhile idea?

• Custom attributes in Active Directory - determining usage/function and possible removal options?

  I've bumped into a highly-customized Active Directory environment (2003 FL) that's got me wondering if there's any particularly easy way to figure out what a custom attribute's function is, and what, if anything, is "using" that particular attribute. And then what some good options for potentially removing custom attributes from the schema might be. Aside from a restore or starting from scratch. If such an option exists. For example, I think I can be fairly certain what the "isDumbass" attribute with a value of TRUE means, but not so much with "IRPextCONST", containing a value of 393684. Likewise, I'd think it should be pretty safe to delete the "isDumbass" attribute, but would like to a) be sure and b) find out what's querying or updating that value anyway, because I suspect that anything using that attribute might be next on the list of things to remove. Ideally, without having to run a search on the contents of every custom script and bit of source code I can get my hands on, of course. And finally, aside from rebuilding from scratch, or doing an authoritative AD restore from backups that don't exist... is there a way to delete a given custom attribute? (Not blank the value, but actually delete the attribute from the schema - some folks would rather not have attributes like "FaggotMeter" and "DouchebagCounter" hanging around.) I've been able to find and successfully test a method on Windows 2k, but it seems like Microsoft disabled this option in SP4, and the domain in question is a 2003 functional level.

Symptom:  JDeveloper Versioning menu offers to Version an Application that is already versioned in svn. Cause: The repository url contained in the hidden .svn folders of the working directory is no longer valid. Solution: Determine the correct url for the Subversion repository and update the .svn working directory.Fix the url contained in the svn folders of the working directory using the svn switch command. These steps are missing one very important vital step in order for FBA to work with Active Directory. A supplement to step 3 before granting access in step 5 through the people picker. You need to specify the Active Directory Provider Name to the people picker, otherwise you will not be able specify users through the Policy for Web Application. <PeoplePickerWildcards>       <clear />          <add key="ADMembershipProvider" value="%" />     </PeoplePickerWildcards> Recently we needed to use Forms Based Authentication with Active Directory from an Extranet. This is how we got it to work. 1. • Purpose of /run/lock/ (empty except for ./whoopsie/)

  My /run/lock/ directory is empty except for ./whoopsie/. I have understood /run/lock/ as a replacement for /var/lock/ but was surprised to find it entirely empty. Is whoopsie meant as a deterrent from using this directory? I did find other lock files under /run/, though. Most notably in /run/user/<me>/. I would have expect per-users lock files in /run/lock/user/ and not in a separate directory. Hoping for some clarification!

• Copy only folders not files?

  Is there a way to copy an entire directory, but only the folders? I have a corrupt file somewhere in my directory which is causing my hard disks to fail. So instead of copying the corrupt file to another hard disk, I wanted to just copy the folders, because I have scripts that search for hundreds of folders, and I don't want to have to manually create them all. I did search the cp manual, but couldn't see anything (I may have missed it) Say I have this structure on my failed HDD: dir1 files dir2 files files dir4 dir3 files All I a want is the directory structure, not any files at all. So I'd end up with on the new HDD: dir1 dir2 dir4 dir3 Hoping someone knows some tricks!

• Replace IIS 403 with 404 for Directory Listing

  Is it possible to have IIS (6 or 7.5) return a 404 Not Found (instead of 403 Forbidden) when a disallowed directory listing is requested? A security scanning service I use thinks the 403 is revealing something "potentially sensitive", when in fact it's just not a valid URL. My workaround is to drop a default.aspx into each directory that returns an empty 404 page, but there has to be a better way...

  Hi there, I am working on a site that where I do not have permission to the server and someone else keeps changing the settings. That person just changed the settings preventing users from going to example.com/foo/ and seeing the index page. This Virtual Directory does not allow contents to be listed. If you type in example.com/foo/index.html you can still see the file. So I want to use htaccess to redirect all urls that end in a directory to change into directory/index.html How do I write that? I started with some code that changes .php files to .html files and tried to work from that but I couldn't quite get it to work. RewriteRule ^(.*)\.php$ /$1.html [R=301,L] Any suggestions?

• /build folder used by PEAR

  I've just noticed a root directory (/build) which I can't seem to find any information for. It looks like it's some sort of staging ground for PEAR (PHP). There are only two folders of different php versions in it, and each of those has a few PEAR tar files I've installed (via the PEAR command line). I'm really only asking this question because I find is strange PEAR (and only PEAR) would create its own root directory to store files. Is this normal? • How to export computers from Active Directory to XML using Powershell?

  I am trying to create a powershell scripts for Remote Desktop Connection Manager using the active directory module. My first thought was get a list of computers in AD and parse them out into XML format similar to the OU structure that is in AD. I have no problem with that, the below code will work just but not how I wanted. • internet explorer ebay listing html/css problem

  The code i wrote for ebay listings seems to be different for the same listing depending on if it is opened with internet explorer or firefox. the source i uploaded to ebay was the same now when i view the code in firefox it shows correctly but in internet explorer it does not. when looking at the source taken from the ebay listing online the source code differs between the browsers even though it is from the same listing and same code. Any ideas on what is going wrong here would be very helpful thx. the code is at pastebin http://pastebin.com/d4ea80aa2 and the link for the ad is at pastebin as i cannot post it here. thx again
