• Remove Grub Loader from Mac

  I installed Ubuntu (Precise) on my Macbook Pro but now I'd like to go back to OSX but I can't boot off the OSX Snow Leopard DVD to do a reinstall. I have tried booting and holding down "c" or using "Option" and then selecting the OSX install media but after selecting the OSX media the grub menu loads and tried to boot Ubuntu instead of booting off the DVD. I tried booting off my Ubuntu LiveUSB and removing all of the partitions using gparted but the problem still persists. Any ideas? I just want to wipe everything and go back to OSX only. When I installed Ubuntu I pretty much followed the default options. Thanks.

  I install my Ubuntu 11.10 64 Bits in my Notebook Lenovo B570. (I remove Win 7). I have no problems to install. But at finish, when it start, it wont boot. It search for another boot device (Network, CD/DVD). Maybe it issue is about SCSI Hard Drive. I try in BIOS set compatible mode SCSI/ATA. It try locate another boot (Networks, CD/DVD). I try to enable compatible mode in BIOS SCSI - SATA and reinstall again. "Will ubuntu be the only os on your computer or is there a 2nd os?" A:Yes. I remove Windows 7 and use All disc to Ubuntu.

  The dvd-drive of a notebook is a MatshitaBD-CMB UJ-120 Hint for you. e.g. Debian Installation-CD with Debian 6.0 resp. Debian 6.0.3 was working fine and has no trouble with this device. Installation-CD with Debian 6.0.4 is behaving same like the Ubuntu-Server-12.04-CD. Problem: Failed boot when my ASUS DRW-24B1/ST DVD drive is attached to my asmedia ASM1061. Symptom: ata8.00: exception Emask 0x52 Sact 0x0 SErr 0xffffffff action 0xe frozen ata8: SError: { blah blah } ata8.00: failed command: IDENTIFY PACKET DEVICE ata8.00: cmd blah blah res blah blah (ATA bus error) ata8.00: status: { DRDY } ata8: hard resetting link Background: The ASM1061 is a PCIe to SATA bridge providing 2 x 6Gb/s ports and is supposed to be fully compliant to SATA specs. I just discovered in the fine print of my ASUS P8Z77-V pro motherboard that "These SATA ports are for data hard drivers only. ATAPI devices are not supported." However, I have already installed Windows 7 using this drive and I can run the Ubuntu 12.04 installer from it as well. The only time I have a problem is during Ubuntu boot when it tries an IDENTIFY PACKET DEVICE which seems to be an ATAPI command. I can't simply switch this device to another SATA port because they are already allocated to other devices. (My chipset's 2 x 6Gb/s are connected to my boot SSD and a fast HDD while the 4 x 3Gb/s ports are running a RAID 5 array.) If this can't be fixed or worked around, I suppose I'll have to go buy SATA add-in card. Blech. Thoughts: If indeed this is a device specific issue (that it doesn't support ATAPI discovery) then I can't expect - is it udev? - to work with it. But, it seems that Windows and even the Ubuntu installer work just fine. So why does udev have a problem? At the end of the day, it would be nice to have the DVD working under Ubuntu, but I can live without it. But, as this is a dual-boot machine, I can't physically disconnect it because I want it to work with Windows. (And physically disconnecting it every time I want to boot Ubuntu is NOT an option. ;-) Questions: Should this be considered a bug? My feelings are that if it works with other OS that it should probably work with Ubuntu as well. How can I work around this problem? I have a limited knowledge of linux internals, but it seems I should be able to somehow tell udev (or whatever is doing the discovery) to ignore that device. Is there a way?

• Computer refuses to boot either ubuntu disk I'm using

  I'm attempting to set up an Amahi server, and thus have taken an older PC and wiped it clean using DBAN. I'm now in the process of installing Ubuntu, but for some reason the computer refuses to recognize either form of Ubuntu I throw at it, even though it recognizes the Windows XP CD fine. Things it can't be: Boot order - I've tripple checked A bad DVD - I've booted the live CD off of my Mac just fine. A drive issue - the drive boots other cd's just fine, I've tested both an XP and the ultimate boot disk for windows... they are booting fine. A drive conflict - I have unplugged the only hard drive, leaving the DVD drive alone, still no recognition. I've tried both Ubuntu 12 and an older Ubuntu 10 CD, it refuses to recognize either one. It's like my computer has decided it will have nothing to do with Ubuntu. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Installing Ubuntu 12.10 on new computer with Windows 8

  I recently purchased a new HP computer (P6-2330) with Windows 8. I have tried unsuccessfully to install Ubuntu 12.10 64bit alongside Windows 8. The computer is UEFI with Secure Boot enabled. I've tried following the instruction at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI. I am able to get the GRUB menu to show up. However, as soon as I press Enter on either Try Ubuntu or Install Ubuntu, the screen goes blank. Nothing works at all, not even the Num Lock or Caps Lock keys on the keyboard. I have to use the power button to restart the computer. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get Ubuntu installed? To clarify, I have actually tried installing using both a USB stick and a DVD. The USB stick gave a blank screen, while the DVD gave the error message "Empty Security Header" after pressing Enter at the GRUB screen.

• How do I create a new usergroup?

  I want to do this because I'm trying to fix user permissions from Ubuntu on my Mac OS X partition and Ubuntu doesn't have the "wheel" group that I so desperately need! Please don't trash me for this but I set my whole Mac OS X partition to give read and write access to everyone so I could access and modify everything on it from my dual-booting Ubuntu OS, and now everything is screwed... I don't have the original Mac OS X installation DVD and booting a Mac OS X 10.5.6 DVD gives me kernel panics... The OS installed on that Mac partition is 10.4.11. Is there any hope for me to ever fix it? I don't have money to buy utilities, and I can't use AppleJack either because my permissions are so messed up... None of the posted answers are what I wanted to do. I wanted to add fields to a user that was on my Mac partition, not a user part of the Ubuntu groups. Is that possible?

• Building a Solaris 11 repository without network connection

  Solaris 11 has been released and is a fantastic new iteration of Oracle's rock solid, enterprise operating system.  One of the great new features is the repository based Image Packaging system.  IPS not only introduces new cloud based package installation services, it is also integrated with our zones, boot environment and ZFS file systems to provide a safe, easy and fast way to perform system updates. My customers typically don't have network access and, in fact, can't connect to any network until they have "Authority to connect."  It's useful, however, to build up a Solaris 11 system with additional software using the new Image Packaging System and locally stored repository. The Solaris 11 documentation describes how to create a locally stored repository with full explanations of what the commands do. I'm simply providing the quick and dirty steps.  The easiest way is to download the ISO image, burn to a DVD and insert into your DVD drive.  Then as root: pkg set-publisher -G '*' -g file:///cdrom/sol11repo_full/repo solaris Now you can to install software using the GUI package manager or the pkg commands.  If you would like something more permanent (or don't have a DVD drive), however, it takes a little more work. After installing Solaris 11, download (on another system perhaps) the two files that make up the Solaris 11 repository from our download site Sneaker-net the files to your Solaris 11 system Unzip and cat the two files together to create one large ISO image. The file is about 6.9 GB in size zfs create rpool/export/repoSolaris11 zfs set atime=off rpool/export/repoSolaris11 zfs set compression=on rpool/export/repoSolaris11 (save some space) lofiadm -a sol-11-1111-repo-full.iso /dev/lofi/1 mount -F hsfs /dev/lofi/1 /mnt You could stop here and set the publisher to point to the /mnt/repo location, however, this mount will not be persistent across reboots. Copy the repository from the mounted ISO image to a permanent, on disk location. rsync -aP /mnt/repo /export/repoSolaris11 pkgrepo -s /export/repoSolaris11 refresh pkg set-publisher -G '*' -g /export/repoSolaris11/repo solaris You now have a locally installed repository for adding additional software packages for Solaris 11.  The documentation also takes you through publishing your repository on the network so that others can access it.

  I have a Hp mini netbook that has been wiped clean, there is nothing other than the bios on it, it has no DVD and I don't have an external DVD. I can change the boot order to boot from a usb device. I have downloaded ubuntu-12.04.1-desktop-i386 I have one of these http://www.kikatek.com/P100600/34609-IOMEGA-250gb-Select-Portable-HDD-2-5-USB?source=froogle currently formatted to NTFS but I can format to exFAT I have tried Linuxlive USB creator, all that managed to do was dual boot the desktop pc that I'm working off, and when booting on the wiped clean netbook, just left me with a black screen with a blinking cursor I have also tried Unetbootin, this managed to change my 'My Computer' icon to Install Ubuntu (C:) and now again, my desktop pc dual boots with the Wubi software, the Unetbootin, wouldn't let me select my external drive to write to Please I'm a complete idiot, i need a super idiots guide to doing this Regards Jaymz

  I just bought an HP desktop, p6-2326s, which has windows 8 installed. I have tried booting a Ubuntu live disc but the machine won't boot it. When I bring up the UEFI boot menu it offers a selection of UEFI BOOT SOURCES, windows boot manager, dvd drive, IP4 Ethernet controller, or IP6 Ethernet controller. If I select the dvd drive with the CD in it I get the message "Secure boot violation, Invalid structure detected. Check secure boot policy in setup." With all other selections it just boots into windows. So where do I go from here?

  Specs: Lenovo U530, 500 GB HDD, 8 GB RAM, 64-bit, i7 Intel Processor with integrated graphics I'm trying to dual-boot Ubuntu but I have the following problems: After booting from live DVD, the GRUB loads but with the following errors: "Could not open '\EFI\BOOT\fallback.efi': 14" and "error: variable 'root' isn't set. I have disabled Fast Startup and SecureBoot before booting the disc. Also, after trying to "Try Ubuntu without installing" my screen, and DVD Drive shutoff momentarily but then my drive boots up but my screen remains black and sometimes flashes but doesn't display anything. I will greatly appreciate any help. P.S. I don't have any previous version of Ubuntu installed so this is NOT an upgrade from a previous version.

So i burned the ubuntu 64 bit iso image onto a dvd and restarted the computer. but in the choice for installations, there is no option to select installing ubuntu along side windows. There is an option to install ubuntu inside windows instead. There are other options as well. What should I do to get the option to install ubuntu along side windows. I think the problem is with the number of drives in windows. Please tell me how should I make a partition in windows 7 to install ubuntu. Thanks a lot..

• How do I restore GRUB 2?

  I upgraded my laptop with an SSD, moving my old HDD to where the DVD-drive was, so that I could have speed and storage. Now, I have reinstalled Ubuntu on the SSD, deleting all the partitions on the old HDD to make space for a data partition. But now the laptop doesn't even get to GRUB 2 if the HDD is plugged in! If I take it out, everything works, but as soon as I plug it in and retry to boot, I won't find GRUB. At first, I thought it was because of the boot order, but the order was OK: first the notebook hard drive (SSD) and then the CD/DVD drive (which in reality is the HDD). How can I fix it? Doing a simple grub-install /dev/sda doesn't work.. The SSD is sda, and the HDD is sdb.

When I insert this DVD into my drive for installation, it does not boot. A blank black screen appears. In 8.10 when I click on update to 9.04 it shows some error. Ubuntu 8.10 is not as good as 12.04.   Running a GYGABYTE FM1 motherboard which is using a AMD 3870k APU with a new WS Caviar 1TB HDD. Following the advice in the Motherboard manual and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI have now got to grub screen for UEFI install. The dvd.iso being used is Ubuntu 12.10 desktop amd64. The hdd has had a gpt partition table made for, by using gparted when in a live desktop session(booted in bios mode)but decided to leave it unformatted with the intention of using installer to set up partitions. Booting live dvd gives grub list with the option to "install ubuntu" but get "can not read cd/0" and "the kernel must be loaded first" errors; when that option is selected. Any pointers on how to get installer going for UEFI install would be good. Thanks in advance.

I tried running BootRepair in Ubuntu but it keeps scanning system endlessly... If I recover Windows with the Windows DVD I assume I will lose the GRUB menu and then not possible to start Ubuntu. How do i then proceed to recover the GRUB? Can I recover using the Ubuntu DVD?

• Grub rescue doesn't allow me to boot from LIVE CD/USB

  I used to have Windows Vista & Ubuntu 12.04 on dual boot. Accidentally, I deleted the Linux partition and landed on Grub rescue on the next boot. The tricky thing for me here is I have been trying to boot through LIVE CD/USB of the ubunutu version, other linux versions but in vain. What happens is, it appears as if it reads the CD/DVD drive or the USB flashes for a while when trying to boot through LIVE versions but the Grub rescue appears after a while. The only option I could think here is to remove the hard disk and connect to the other laptop I have through USB and reinstall a fresh OS. Please suggest me a way to boot through the DVD/USB again. My laptop is Sony VAIO CR32 series.Thanks.

• Can I have a single solid state drive and a RAID array on the same machine?

  Hi- To summarize, i'm looking to use a single solid state drive as my primary drive, and two conventional sata drives in a RAID 1 configuration for data. I am trying to install 64-bit Windows 7 onto this configuration. Is this possible? Here are the details: I built a desktop that has been running 64-bit Vista on two 500Gb in a RAID 1 array for a few years. I just purchased an Intel X25-M 80Gb Sata Solid-State Drive, and was planning on using this a my primary drive, and keeping the RAID 1 array as my data drive. I added the SSD drive and in the RAID setup, configured it as a RAID 0 array of only one disk. Then, I tried to do a clean install of windows 7 64-bit, but got stuck in the "Missing driver for CD/DVD drive" black hole of selecting driver files and Windows telling me that i don't have the appropriate driver for my hardware. The missing hardware is NOT a CD/DVD drive, since i'm installing off of my only CD/DVD drive. Plus at one point i was able to point it at a driver for my raid controller, and then my hard drives magically showed up as browsable sources for finding drivers for some other unnamed device that setup couldn't recognize. After a few hours of trying drivers (this was a very slow process) i decided to reboot and look at the BIOS settings. I'm using an ASUS M2A-VM motherboard which has an ATI SB600 RAID controller on board. I switched the "On board SATA Type" setting from "SATA" to "AHCI" thinking that since AHCI is an Intel thing, this would help. Unfortunately, this abandoned my RAID configuration, and my previously mirrored drives are showing up as separate drives when i boot into my current windows installation. Am i trying to do the impossible here? Should i just buy a separate SATA/RAID PCI card and plug the SSD into that? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Ripping CD Audio simultaneously from 2 drives on one PC via USB or PATA - rip accuracy preserved?

  I'm considering ripping audio (reading audio) from CDs using 2 drives simultaneously to speed up the process of ripping the CDs - i.e. 2 at a time rather than 1. Are there any issues with achieving maximum rip accuracy? In general I wondered if people have tried this and if the simultaneous streams from both rip activities would overload the host machine and cause packet loss or read retries resulting in a sub-standard CD-DA Audio CD rip? If it just means the rip is slightly slower (but still faster than sequentially doing one rip followed by another) but still of maximum accuracy then that is OK for me. I will be using dbPowerAmp to rip the CDs and converting to FLAC lossless format. Specific examples: There are 2 machines I intend to do it on: A Toshiba NB100 1.6Ghz Atom netbook, 2Gb RAM, running Windows XP Home with 1 external LG DVD/CD burner and external 1 LG Blu-ray burner attached via USB 2.0, ripping to the machine's 5400rpm internal hard drive. This rips from one CD drive very well, more than adequate, it is a nippy, fast little machine for its specification. A Desktop PC running Windows 7 Home Premium with MSI P4M900M2-L/ MS-7255v2.0 motherboard and 1.86Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo E6320, 7200rpm hard drive and 2Gb RAM, with an internal LG PATA DVD/CD burner (master) and a Philips DVD/CD burner (slave) on the same PATA bus (perhaps separate buses would be another option to consider here). Thoughts?
