• How to get back-to-work with a Windows 7 PC that has no admin account?

  Hi everyone, I have a PC which doesn't have the Administrator account active and the only user account left is a Guest user. I want to get back the admin account but I don't know how to do that with a guest user. I have tried searching the internet and try to use the Recovery Mode but adding/activating the admin account from DOS not working for me at all. Please help if you meet & solve it before! • How to tell if linux disk IO is causing excessive (> 1 second) application stalls

  I have a Java application performing a large volume (hundreds of MB) of continuous output (streaming plain text) to about a dozen files a ext3 SAN filesystem. Occasionally, this application pauses for several seconds at a time. I suspect that something related to ext3 vsfs (Veritas Filesystem) functionality (and/or how it interacts with the OS) is the culprit. What steps can I take to confirm or refute this theory? I am aware of iostat and /proc/diskstats as starting points.   I left my computer off for a couple of weeks and since my Windows 7 updates have been installed I have managed to gather a malware virus. It tries to redirect me on almost all websites I go to. I have read many ways to solving this issue manually, but it seems difficult and I dont want to delete any important files by mistake. All the instructions I have read seem complicated and generic all leading to a company that say they can help remove it. Is it their scam?? Can anybody help by giving me any free software or a descriptive run through for beginners of how to manually remove it? cheers guys

• When to use delaycompress option in logrotate?

  The man page of logrotate says that: It can be used when some program cannot be told to close its logfile and thus might continue writing to the previous log file for some time. I'm confused by this. If a program cannot be told to close its logfile, it will continue to write forever, not for sometime. If the compression is postponed to next rotation cycle, the program continues to write to that file even after the next rotation cycle. How is postponing solving the problem? My understanding is that copytruncate should be used when a program cannot be told to close the logfile. I'm aware that some data written to the logfile gets lost when the copy is in progress. I was looking at the logrotate file for couchdb, and it had both copytruncate and delaycompress options. /usr/local/couchdb-1.0.1/var/log/couchdb/*.log { weekly rotate 10 copytruncate delaycompress compress notifempty missingok } It looks like there is no point using delaycompress when copytruncate is already there. What am I missing?

• Providing high availability and failover using MySQL on EC2

  I would like to have a highly-available MySQL system, with automatic failover, running on Amazon EC2 instances. The standard approach to solving this is problem Heartbeat + DRBD, but I've found a lot of posts suggesting DRBD doesn't work on EC2, though none saying exactly why. Obviously, a serial heartbeat or distinct network is out of the question in the virtualised environment. It would also be good to have the different servers be in different availability zones, but we're getting into a much harder problem there. What are peoples' opinion on having a high uptime solution in "the cloud"? Note: This question was asked before RDS with multi-AZ was announced, which is the nice automatic answer for today's modern IT professional. :)

• How do I make a partition usable in windows 7 after power loss?

  A few days ago I was installing some software and power went down. When I rebooted, the partition to which the software was installed was not accessible. Disk manager shows that it's there, but doesn't show type, if it's healthy and gives me an error when trying to read its properties. The problem seems to be common after power loss, people recommend solving it by assigning a letter to the partition via DiskPart utility, but partition isn't listed in my case. I can access that partition with bootable OSs (like bootable Ubuntu or winXP) and all the files are there, but another installation of Windows 7 gives me the same results as the original. I could just copy all data to another disk if there was enough space, but unfortunately the size of partition I'm having problems with is 1.1TB. How do I regain access to the partition in my original Windows 7 installation without losing any data?

• Very high memory usage, but not claimed by any process?

  While stress-testing LVM on one of our Debian servers, I came across this issue where memory would fill up a lot to the point where it would run the server out of memory, but no process would claim the memory. And is there any way to see what process is using the memory? Htop is configured not to hide any processes, so what is it that htop is missing? In this particular case, I can fairly certainly say that it is caused, directly or indirectly, by lvmcreate, lvmremove or dmsetup, as I was stress-testing that. Do note that this question is not about solving the LVM problem, but about why the memory isn't claimed by any process. Stopping all LVM commands does bring the memory back down to <600MB.

• Where would an S3 upload speed cap originate?

  I do a ton of uploading to S3 and am experiencing capped speeds and I can't quite figure out how to address it. The setup: Windows Server 2008 R2 x64, external HD, using a Java based upload tool called Jsh3ll and custom VBS scripts to kick the jobs off. Running one process at a time, I am always limited to about 4mbps. I have FiOS at 35/35mbps speeds, so it isn't an outright limit. AND, I can run parallel instances and can go all the way up to 35mbps, so I know the problem isn't gateway/nic/machine/amazon related. Running parallel instances works to a degree as a solution, but increases the complexity of my workflow greatly. Solving this would make my life dramatically easier. When I was first doing this I was playing around with a bunch of Windows TCP parameters and was able to briefly get unconstrained bandwidth, but it wasn't repeatable. Thoughts?

• Outgoing email getting stuck in outbox and sent out multiple times.

  I have someone with 3 accounts on Outlook - one of them is giving trouble, in that when sending mail from it, it gets stuck in the outbox, saying it hasn't sent yet. When it finally does send off, he gets reports that about 10 copies have been received. The webmail associated with that account works fine, which means the hosting company (Godaddy) hasn't been helpful in solving this problem. It seems to be an Outlook issue. The other two email accounts (one of which is also a Godaddy email), work normally.

But when I am trying to running the command: $ curl -XPUT http://172.16.31.127:8080/test.html -d 'test' I am getting 500 Internal Server error. Can anyone help me out in solving this.

• Domain user periodically can't login, but only temporarily?

  Ok, this is a strange one that I'm having trouble replicating letting alone solving. I have a user who uses two computers (both XP sp3) on the domain with a roaming profile. She has no problems on her personal computer but occasionally needs to use a shared computer. On this shared computer she is sometimes (~once a week) unable to login with the error message "Username or password incorrect. Check username password and domain and try again." I've checked when this happens and her username and password are indeed entered correctly. Now the strange part - if someone else logs in to the computer (which so far always works) and then logs out she is able to log in after that. This problem began after a recent and long overdue password change. I've tried to replicate this problem after a reboot, or after another user logs out to no avail. Any suggestions on troubleshooting or replicating this one? Anyone experienced something similar?

• How do I turn off the click sound when closing a tab in chrome?

  Every time I close a tab in Chrome, it makes a click sound. How do I turn off that sound? I reported that issue back in Oct 2010. The problem doesn't appear on all clients and the reason is still unclear. Common attempts at solving the issue include simply turning off the sound in Windows. But I would prefer to solve the problem at the source. Why is Chrome even triggering that sound to be played? And why is it delayed? The problem would be far less annoying if the sound could easily be related to the action taken. Installing the Chrome Toolbox and muting all tabs has no effect on this issue. When switching to a different Chrome user profile, the new user profile does exhibit the same issue.

• Gitosis installation of public key not working...

  I've been following this tutorial to install and setup git on Ubuntu Server 10.04 using Windows 7 as a client. However, after finally figuring out how it works (executed gitosis-init a bunch of times on the wrong key), I copied the id_rsa.pub file over to the server in /tmp folder and ran it again. Unfortunately it still doesn't work and when I execute git clone [email protected]:gitosis-admin.git it asks for gitosis's password rather than the RSA Passphrase. I'm assuming is the same problem this guy is having here... however, after following his instructions: Purge git-core and gitosis and manually remove the /srv/gitosis folder and following the instructions again (with the proper id_rsa.pub file this time), I'm still having the same issue. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Is there any way to probe for more information that might help in solving this?

• Windows 7- New Windows Are Not Displayed

  I am running an up-to-date and OEM version of Windows 7. I have been experiencing an annoying problem for the past few weeks where new windows are not displayed 70-80% of the time. For example, when I launch notepad, the notepad window is not displayed or when I select save from the file menu, the save dialog is not displayed. The window is there, but it is not being displayed; the screen is not refreshed. The way to work around this problem is to force a system-wide refresh by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+DEL and then cancelling hiding all windows using "show desktop" then displaying the window needed via taskbar Can anyone please point me in the right direction to solving this problem? What could be causing this?

• How can I run my program on a large number of computers? [closed]

  I'm looking for a (preferably free) service for running an executable I wrote? It's not malicious, it's not a virus, it's not scam, and if this is really important I can upload the python source code instead. I wrote a small crawler to gather information regarding the style of web pages for my MA project, and I need a lot more data. EDIT Here is more information on my problem and how I approach on solving it, and where I'm stuck. As part of my research I'm trying to classify text based on it's style (font-family for now), my data is based web pages, so I wrote a client/server application - the client is a crawler that gathers this data and send it to the server. The problem is that like 99% of the internet is Arial, Verdana and Helvetica - other fonts are far more rare, so I need to spend very long time to gather enough data regarding these fonts. • How do I set up disk quotas over LDAP on CentOs?

  I've been google-ing for some time and I haven't been able to find any resources or hints on the subject. I am wondering if it is possible to do so, if so how? Any nudge in right direction will be appricated. I do know that if you download and install "Linux Quota" from source, you'll get some perl scripts which are supposed to aid with the matter. But there is as far as I know absolutely no good documentation to help you along the way. I am also running a NFS server from the same machine. Note: This is for a university assignment, so I might be totally stupid for asking this question. I am trying to explore the options. If there is a better way of solving this, please do tell. Edit: Here is a link to the site of Linux Quota. They do include a LDAP schema, so it should be possible.

• How can I unify my email, calendar and tasks (2 exchange accounts + 1 gmail)

  This is my situation: I work as a consultant, and thus work out of multiple computers: my work-laptop a desktop at my primary client my desktop at home an android smartphone an android tablet Likewise, I have multiple accounts: A Microsoft Exchange (2010 AFAIK) account A Microsoft Exchange (2007 AFAIK) account A gmail account The most important thing I need is the ability to have events in one calendar affect the free / busy status of all other accounts (so that if I am busy on Monday 9am with an event from my employer's account, it will show that time as busy in my client's account, and in the gmail account. Second thing I need is a unified view of all of my accounts' info: Appointments, email, tasks, and contacts (in that order of importance). I've already tried outlook synchronization tools such as gSyncit, to sync both exchange accounts with gmail, but this creates a mess when updating appointments (deleted appointments sometimes return, timestamps revert). Is there perhaps some way to at least synchronize the free/busy state in a way that all of my calendar apps / accounts will look there to see if I can be invited?   Hi Is there any (ideally open source) software for Windows that can be used on a PC, to monitor the usage of internet from that PC? It would need to include both browser and non-browser sources (e.g. a service that sync's calendar to gmail). So any software on your PC that uses would need to be configured to point to this local internet monitoring software/proxy. The monitoring software/proxy then would be configured to point to the company proxy server (address, port & credentials). Things that come to mind that might be close but not really focused on solving this might be perhaps: Charles Proxy, Fiddler 2, SQUID? The idea would be it could give you a daily/weekly/monthly report of internet upload/download usage on a per program/process/service basis for the PC it is being run on. thanks

RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller While the other machine is running Ubuntu 12.04 with an Atheros Communications Inc AR8152 v1.1 Fast Ethernet The two machines are connected via a switch (Edimax ES-3205P). Unfortunately I still cannot connect the two machines together. Can somebody please show me what to do and how to go about solving this issue?

• KVM XML config file

  I have a KVM server that I expanded the LV of then rebooted. However now when booting I get the error: error: Failed to create domain from /home/kvm/kvmx/kvmx.xml error: (domain_definition):1: Document is empty (null) ^ It appears the config file still exits however it is now empty. I attempted to replace the contents of the file with the correct previous information however it continues to wipe it on attempt to boot and fails again with the same error. How would I got about solving this so the file doesn't get wiped on every reboot? OS: Centos 6 64bit I would appreciate any help you may have.

• Explaining svn / apache permissions error? (I know "how" but not "why")

  I have the following error occurring on occasion when trying to do an svn switch (have it set up to do via a web request): svn: Can't open file '/root/.subversion/servers': Permission denied This happens after an apache httpd.conf change and corresponding restart. How to fix this? I can get it to fix by doing an apache restart - BUT, it often takes multiple tries. Curious if anybody can explain this. Why did this error go away on my 8th apache restart, but not on the prior ones (with no edits to the conf file)? Basically, I kind of have a "how" in terms of solving this, but I don't have a "why" . . . Thanks!

So, I want to reshape this data in a way to get all the people within a specific GroupID in separate columns. I suppose that I should add a counter for each row within specific group id? • Internet Explorer 9 beta installation problem

  I'm running Vista SP2, x64. Because I wanted to test out the IE9 beta, I downloaded the English-language installer for 64-bit Vista systems. Running the installer is fine until it starts downloading required updates. The progress bar doesn't get far before it completely stops moving. Then after 20 minutes to an hour, it will tell me that there's an update I have to install, but as soon as I click OK it sends me an error message, telling me that it can't go to the url of the update which is here. So I manually enter it into my browser, which prompts me to download a standalone update. After that's been downloaded and I run it, it tells me that the update does not apply to my system. I'd appreciate any help to solving my problem.

• Uninstalling hard deleted application from Windows7

  Unfortunately, I have hard deleted the microsoft sql server folder present in program files folder. So now I need to uninstall the MSSQL server from my machine. I have tried but I got an error something like "The source folder is missing". For resolving this issue, I have manually deleted the MS SQL services using "sc delete" command and I have deleted the MSSQL entry from regedit file also. But still MS SQL server entry available in "Programs and Features" list. Please guide me for solving this issue even I can't able to re install the MSSQL server once again. Thank you guys...
