    Even with the new version of VMware Player 4.0.4 you are still required to patch their sources. So, same game as last month. Just changing the value of the required version in the kernel patch script of Stefano Angeleri (weltall) and you are done: nano patch-modules_3.2.0.sh Please change line 8 at the top of the script like so: plreqver=4.0.4 Save your modification and then run the following commands: sudo rm /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source/.patchedsudo ./patch-modules_3.2.0.shsudo service vmware restart And again, on first start VMware will present you their EULA which you have to accept, and everything gets back to normal operation mode. Interestingly, one day ago the Ubuntu repositories provided a newer kernel version 3.2.0-25, so everything is running fine for now.

  • Touchpad & TrackPoint (ThinkPad L520) suddenly unresponsive

    My mother has a problem with her ThinkPad L520 notebook (Ubuntu 11.10, Unity). She boots the device, everything works fine at first. But then, out of nowhere, her touchpad + trackpoint stop working. She can't click or drag the mouse. If she connects an external mouse, she can move the pointer and click (but the internal touchpad or trackpoint still don't work). She already updated everything through the update manager, but still no success...like I said, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. There are no 'special' mouse drivers installed. What can I do to fix this? Thank you for your help! :)

    I am trying to track down a game engine for developing mobile games for ios and android. I have been looking for weeks now and havent found what i am looking for. I like jmonkey engine for making desktop games. Its easy to use and it comes with everything you need. Its more that just some libraries. I'm looking for something similar for developing mobile games. I'd like it to be easy to use and have everything included not just a collection of libraries. And I would prefer to write in c++. I'm not looking for "the best". I'm just looking for some engines that match my criteria so I can try them out and see which one works best for me.

  • Ubuntu 13.04 not detecting operating system Windows 8

    I have a Samsung NP740U3E with pre-installed Windows 8 (boots with UEFI). I installed Ubuntu 13.04 without problems. Later, Windows 8 did a BIOS update which messed up everything, nothing would boot. I recovered everything and went back to fabric settings. Now Windows 8 works fine, but when I try to install Ubuntu it does not detect any operating system, so I can`t install Ubuntu alongside Windows. I`ve googled as much as I can, ran a boot-repair, disabled fast- and secure-boot. I have a GPT disc, been looking into gdisk without luck. Here`s my boot-repair summary http://paste.ubuntu.com/5835719/ Is it necessary to convert the GPT disc to MBR? Is it possible to hard-reset the disc "even more" than fabric settings? I am going to be posting everything to GitHub so people can tweak it and hopefully make it better. I guess what I'm asking is, what would be the best way to make sure my code is sufficiently documented and worded right for other people to use? I know you should always comment everything and I'm going to be putting in the @params feature for every method, but are there any other tips in general?

  • nVidia GT 220 not working properly with Ubuntu 12.10

    I used to enable proprietary nVidia drivers on every previous Ubuntu release to get it working properly (elseway I was forced to a very low resolution and no graphic acceleration), and everything worked fine then. In particular, I noticed - still I don't know why - that the GPU fan on every OS gets noisy until the video drivers are loaded (runlevel 5, it seems, in Linux), and then slows down to a normal speed. Today I installed 12.10. Running the Live CD, surprisingly, everything was working fine: full resolution, acceleration, silent fan, and so on. The running driver was nvidia-current (GT 216). After installing and booting I found that the fan was overrunning. The installed driver is nouveau. I tried installing nvidia-current, or any other proprietary driver, even installing the kernel headers & source and then the drivers (as suggested here), but all I'm getting with proprietary drivers is, the irony, low resolution, noisy fan and no acceleration (thus obviously unity and compiz refusing to start). Does anybody know a way out?

  • Settings messed up after crash

    After an abrupt shutdown many settings were messed up: #1 Firefox was a mess. Bookmarks were gone, and I couldn't even add new ones. I had to reset firefox from safe mode and install all my addons and configure everything. This was a pain but is now solved. #2 The background in the login screen shows the one I chose with Ubuntu Tweak for a second, and then it puts back the default one. I tried changing it again with Ubuntu Tweak but it's still happening. #3 All my shortcuts in the sidebar were replaced by the default ones. I re-added them manually, also a pain. So how can I solve 2? And in case this happens again, is there a way to fix everything easy and fast?

  • How to make Classic ASP interesting if you are stuck with it?

    I used to work on a really small outsourcing company (4 programmers and the boss), then when the stress and the frequent long shifts made the situation unbearable I made the switch to a better paid job with a more relaxed schedule that allows me some more free time. The problem, however, is that for the most part, everything is coded in Classic ASP that interfaces with a custom made C++ queueing system that stores everything in AS400 systems. My boss used to be one of the developers that made the initial efforts towards this, and naturally won't ever approve a switch to another languages / technologies despite the increasing difficulty that represents developing today business needs with yesterday tools. I'm pretty much stuck coding with Classic ASP in the foreseeable future, and I'm struggling to find ways to make it at least interesting, as I used to work with .NET and Java previously, and I feel like I'm going backwards... Any advice?

    I am new to ubuntu, but really enjoy it. I do have one issue with setting it up on my computer. It is a GoBook XR-1 and everything works perfectly except there is no sound. I've searched and tried everything that I can think of, even uninstalling ubuntu and trying Windows to see if the speakers worked. I found out that it wasn't the speakers or any hardware issues. I tried to download the Realtek drivers, but still no success.

    Possible Duplicate: Problem with ubuntu 12.04 I am new to Ubuntu. I've installed 12.04 version of Ubuntu. It works fine but sometimes when i shutdown my PC from Ubuntu and when I try to start it again,nothing shows on the screen. It's always black screen instead of Acer logo (I have Acer aspire 5573) and the system restart again and again but and doesn't allow me to choose a OS (Ubuntu/windows,i use dualboot) To fix this I have to remove the battery and put it again.Then everything works fine. How do i fix this issue? I think that could be a incompatibility with the PC because everything works fine with windows. Thanks!

  • Cannot see user desktop (Applications, Places, System...) when I log in

    I am very new to Ubuntu. I recently got a new laptop running Windows 7. I am using Virtual Box and just installed the Ubuntu 12.10 ISO as a new Virtual Machine within Virtual Box. Everything seemed to install just fine and I even added the Guest Additions under Devices. The problem is that I cannot see the menus and my login information. The virtual machine says it is running; however, I do not have the Applications, Places, System, etc. tray to select from. Is there something I am supposed to do after logging in to get this? I entered my password and everything seemed fine, I just don't have those drop-down menus available...

  • Can't Make Changes via FTP on my Ubuntu Server

    I'm very new to server management, I literally just set this up for the first time a couple weeks ago, no idea what I'm doing. In order to allow WordPress to run updates, apparently everything needs to be owned by www-data, but if everything is owned by www-data, I can't FTP with the user revxx14. When I try, I can't make any changes (deletions, additions, updating files, nothing. I get permission denied errors across the board). Is there a way to give my user the same permissions as www-data, so that I'll be able to keep www-data the owner, but still be able to make changes via FTP? Thanks.

    Possible Duplicate: How do you manage your knowledge base? What do you use for personal note taking to keep track of everything you learn? Are you always Googling or searching StackOverflow to answer the same questions? Or searching for and copying and pasting existing code? I feel like I have a poor memory, especially remembering things like syntax. Are there any knowledge management systems that would work well for a programming language or operating system? It would be great if there were a way to save everything I learn in an easy to search system. Does such a thing exist? Maybe you would be able to search by question (How to sort an array?, How to set static IP?), or by tag (sort, array, enumeration, iterator, IP). I know it would be easy to develop my own system, but I thought it would be great to learn what works for other people.

  • 12.04 precise HDMI not working on ATI Radeon

    This is precisely a 12.04 HDMI output problem, because it works for 11.10 - everything else are the same, only the OS version is different. The symptom is that on my HDMI output TV screen, it always shows Unsupported resolution even after setting it to the resolution that works on Ubuntu 11.10 (via gnome-control-center, in which it detects my TV just fine), I still don't see any output on TV. The audio is not working either. I think it is 12.04's problem, because if I boot into Ubuntu 11.10, and everything else remain the same, HDMI output (video & audio) work just fine. 12.04 is a freshly installed, just the vanilla Ubuntu HD installation. How should I nailed down / fix the problem?

  • Libreoffice theme integration not working (Xubuntu)

    I am running Xubuntu 11.10 and everything works nicely. I have selected a nice Xfce theme and everything looks beautiful, except Libreoffice. While other programmes (Gimp, Inkscape, Thunar etc.) integrate with the selected Appearance & Window Manager theme, Libreoffice looks like a Windows 98 programme. Does anyone know how to fix this?   • Spurious resets on Ubuntu

    I have a PC running Ubuntu 13.04 64bit, and I do weekly updates, so everything should be up-to-date. Everything is running fine, but sometimes, once-twice a week a complete reset happens. I think it must be software or hardware (perhaps Videocard) related, but I can't figure out what could be wrong. Can anybody suggest some ways, log files, where I could continue to search? By looking just at dmesg/dmesg.0 and Xorg.0.log I got nowhere. I cant find even a user application segfault. Any help is really appreciated.

  • iScsiPrt error event ID 5

    Event Log: "Failed to setup initiator portal. Error status is given in the dump data." This is being recorded every 3/100's of a second. We are using MS iSCSI Initiator on Windows Server 2003, Dell 2970 w/4GB (PAE). I am sure that this was configured by Dell initially. I have no idea what changes or mods were made since the company installed this machine until now. (I'm a new User so the lovely and vibrant screen images had to be removed. They were quite pretty and I am sure you would have been very moved and appreciative of them.) It appears that everything is installed correctly and the 5TB bound volume is accessible but I have never worked with iScsi before so I plead total ignorance. In searching I have found this to be a fairly sparce and bland documented subject. I'd like two things... First, to get rid of the error msg being logged. MS says it can be ignored if everything is working but it chews up resources logging it and I don't feel comfortable about any errors on my servers. I want to correct whatever is causing this problem. Secondly, being totally green to this, I would like to confirm that the setup is optimized and we are taking advantage of all features available. Although there are 3 NIC's in this machine it appears that the initiator is only configured for the Broadcom BMC5708C NetXtreme II on our 10.90.1.#, the other 2 NICS are 1GB on the 192.168.0.#. Would additional targets improve performance? If someone who is experienced in configuring the Microsoft iScsi Initiator can help I would really appreciate it since, as I mentioned, everything I have come across has not been of any value at all.   • Android SDK emulator freezes on a Mac running OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard

    I'm having trouble running the Android SDK on both of my Macs running OS X 10.6.2 Snow Leopard. This appears to be a 64 bit vs. 32 bit issue, as Snow Leopard now defaults to 64-bit everything, including the Java virtual machine. I found this webpage with instructions on how to get the Android tools to run in the 32-bit Java VM, and I am now able to run the Android GUI tool to download SDK files, create AVM's, etc. However, when I try the Hello World tutorial and get to the point where I run my application under the Android emulator, everything goes south. The emulator appears to start but it hangs (spinning beachball of death cursor) without displaying anything. (This only hangs the emulator; the rest of the system still works fine.) If I follow the exact same steps (minus the 32-bit java hack) in a Windows virtual machine, everything works fine. Googling didn't yield anything useful (except for the 32-bit java hack I spoke of earlier). This occurs on both my Mac Pro tower and 13" MacBook Pro. Does anyone have any suggestions?

  • Apache2 with SSL and mod_jk on SUSE Linux Enterprise | Apache always starts SSL disabled

    I have installed Apache2 (with mod_ssl enabled) on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 (x86_64) (patchlevel 1), using YaST. Once installed, I tested whether everything works fine so far. SSL also worked fine. Just 'apache2ctl start' was enough to make everything working. Then I installed mod_jk and applied the following configuration changes to make it work. /etc/sysconfig/apache2 (added JK module) APACHE_MODULES="... ... ... ... ...jk" /etc/apache2/httpd.conf (included mod_jk.conf) Include /etc/apache2/mod_jk.conf /etc/apache2/mod_jk.conf (new file) JkLogFile /var/log/apache2/mod_jk.log JkWorkersFile /etc/apache2/mod_jk/workers.properties JkShmFile /etc/apache2/mod_jk/mod_jk.shm # Set the jk log level [debug/error/info] JkLogLevel info # Select the timestamp log format JkLogStampFormat "[%a %b %d %H:%M:%S %Y] " mod_jk.log & mod_jk.shm files were also created. /etc/apache2/mod_jk/workers.properties (new file) worker.list=jira worker.jira.type=ajp13 worker.jira.host=127.0.0.1 worker.jira.port=8009 Once everything is done, I've restarted Apache using the following command, apache2ctl restart Then I observed that SSL is not working. When checked with telnet, I observed that port 443 is not open. In listen.conf, if I specify port 443 bypassing 'IfDefine' and 'IfModule' conditions, then SSL works properly. This is likely the 'SSL' flag is not passed to Apache. I did not make this a persistent change as I thought it might not be the correct practice. I checked /etc/sysconfig/apache2 to see if this has been altered, but it is there. Although this flag is enabled, Apache won't start with SSL support. APACHE_SERVER_FLAGS="SSL" Finally, I had to start Apache using the following command, apache2ctl -D SSL -k start And my question is, why did Apache (or apache2ctl) fail to start with SSL when I have installed and correctly configured mod_jk, and no other configuration changes were applied?   • Howto make a diff of a bios or backup/ restore all bios settings

    Hi, I'm using an Dell M90 Precision Laptop which has a NVidia Quadro FX 2500M graphics card and is running Windows XP. Laptop has been running fine - but a few weeks ago screen went 'white' - restarted computer- bios and startup screens show weird green dots and stripes, normal startup only shows a black screen... only VGA mode works to display something. I've been trying to remove and reinstall the correct drivers downloaded from Dell's website - no solution. I gave up and reinstalled XP - everything was working perfect again. 2 weeks later - again the white screen - tried everything again (flashin new bios also - nothing works) Reinstalled XP - everyhting was working again, so I made a DriveSnapShot of the partition. Today - again the 'white screen'. Ok, no problem ...I was thinking all I needed to do was to restore the DriveSnapShot backup... Few minutes later the backup is restored ... but guess what: video driver does not work correctly... As the DriveSnapShot restored the complete partition, as it was at the time everything was working perfectly, this would mean my driver problems are due to 'settings' in the bios or on the graphics-card itself + these 'settings' can get overridden by doing a new XP-install.... I'm out of options, can somebody help me to find a solution for this problem: Is there some way to backup and restore a bios after seeing some problems? Is there some way to know what is causing this problem like a bios diff utility? Thanks!

  • Backup Gmail using Mail.app and IMAP without redundancy

    I don't care for actually using mail app, I use mostly the gmail interface and mail app just for offline, for quickly reading and eventually replying. Everything is working fine, I think I've followed every guide out there... Here's a great one. But I could find nothing about avoiding redundancy. Well, I can manually do that either by using POP or by checking off most of my labels out of IMAP. But I do use a lot of labels and I often label messages with more than 1 label. And I want them on mail app. Is there anyway to make it keep just 1 copy of repeated messages? Maybe there's a message id or checksum that could be used... If there isn't a way to do it, be assured I still prefer having the extra messages and "wasting" space rather than not having any. edit: I've came across many solutions for finding duplicate files, but they just delete the files. That just make things worst: Mail will just sync it all again. I've realized it's probably better to keep two accounts setup, POP for backup and IMAP for everything else with removing the "All Mail" from it. That's because if the "All Mail" on the server is deleted for any reason, my "All Mail" local will also get deleted, while POP will keep all files regardless of the server. This doesn't solve the redundancy issue at all, but it doesn't create any new issue as well, and I can even use the search properly, without duplicated results, if I search just on the POP. So it helps optimizing a little bit. But I still think the best way to solve this issue would be having something such as aamann's Mail Scripts tweaked to hardlinking the duplicates rather than deleting, and optimized to not need to scan everything every time. I'm trying to contact him and see what we can do. At any pace, I'm still looking for an answer!
